She Speaks

It is Sunday night on March 21st at 10:45pm. I just checked my email and found a blog link forwarded to me by my dear friend. So, as usual, I am jumping on the bandwagon late; but better late than never. Right? Thank you, Jesus for friends who truly have my best interest at heart. Friend, you know who you are and I love you, my dear, treasured blessing!

The blog entry was giving information on an AMAZING upcoming Christian Woman's conference called "She Speaks." It is geared at speakers and writers who are looking to sharpen their skills. What a wonderful opportunity! Even more fabulous is that they are looking for someone to attend for FREE!!! All that applicants have to do is explain why they want to attend (enter this blog post) so settle in and read on for my shameless attempt at authentically winning over the hearts of the discerning team members at Proverbs 31 Ministries. I am rarely a woman of few words so forgive the lengthy diatribe that awaits you. However, this tale is too great to leave anything out so you are getting the fully loaded, unabridged version!

As an aspiring writer, I am twittering (not the Internet kind) with excitement over all of the possibilities this conference could hold for me! God has really been revealing Himself to me especially through written words as of late. But I am getting ahead of myself. I have always loved writing, and am most fond of poetry. I speak most eloquently in the dialect of ink. It is my safe haven. On paper I am free to confront, confess, proclaim, create, anything I am brave enough to pen, really! I often joke that I dream in rhyme. Yes, I am one of those poets - a little Dr. Suessish if you will. With two children's books waiting in the wings for the past four years, I've been turned down by at least six NY based literary agents when inquiring about getting my works published. I was starting to think that maybe writing was not God's purpose for me.

That all changed a few months ago. The aforementioned friend has a wonderful talent of her own. She captures the most fantastic photographs. A while back she called me and said that something was on her heart. She had been trying to think of a way that she could use her gift to help others and was wondering if I would be interested in collaborating with her on some level. I broke out in head to toe chills - VERY un-Sara like! I, too, had been trying to find a way to use my "gift" to greater the kingdom! We decided we would pray on it and meet in a few weeks. Weeks turned into a few months. I had a few ideas but was not sure if they were mine or God's.

Then, a month ago, same sweet friend forwarded me another blog post. This time it was about a precious 2-year old girl who was battling stage 4 neurblastoma. Sadly, she lost her battle last week. Her parents courageously posted their trials with such grace and faith that I was captivated by their story. After reading one entry, I felt lead to write a poem for this little girl. It was my way of trying to make sense of it all. Without telling another mortal soul, I typed it out, said a prayer and sent it to the parents. Not knowing what would ever come of it, I just waited. Four days later, I was checking in on the family and there at the bottom of the mother's post was my poem! I could not believe my eyes. She said that it perfectly conveyed what was on her heart so she wanted to share it.

About two hours later, I had a strange rambling message from my sweet friend on my cell phone. Okay, she keeps popping up. Let's just call her Big A. She was telling me about the same post and how there was this poem on there. She knew that since there were over 25,000 people following the family's story I probably did not write it but that it had me "written all over it." What?! Remember, I told NO ONE, not even my own husband that I had written that poem. In a tizzy, I quickly called her back and when she answered I simply said, "How did you know?" Big A: "What? No way! You really did not write that. I am going to cry." Again, I broke out in head-to-toe chills! What was going on here?

After a few minutes of talking over each other but hearing every word, we knew that we had to do something. How could this not be the hand of our mysterious Maker? Knowing that sweet girl only had a few weeks left before she met Jesus, we got to work. Our company was born a few days later. Our mission: to combine personal family photographs with customized text in a format that everyday families can treasure forever. The byproduct: raising money for researching childhood cancer and accumulating funds to make these keepsakes for parents who are grieving the impending loss of their precious children.

At first it was so exciting. Then, I thought about it. Really, God? Do work for the dying? But how? Then I remembered that He had already been opening windows for me before I even realized the door was closed. I know that emotionally I cannot do it on my own but am confident that aside from being the best Godly wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend possible, this is my purpose. At least for this season in my life.

ALL of that to say, by attending this conference, I would be able to really equip myself for my new journey. I usually write from the heart, but also want have the best professional skills that I can. I can't wait to broaden my horizons. God is good and He is ALWAYS faithful. Regardless of how He gets me there, I know in my heart of hearts that if this is to be my witness, where there is His will, there is a way.

Thank you to all of you who have made it to the bottom of this post! You are courageous, great reader! May God pour his abundant blessings over your life as He is doing in mine.

Mama Mia

Oh, Mama Mia!
I went to see ya!
You were such a fun movie.

Mama Mia!
You make me want to be a
Singer on the Broadway!

Okay, so if you haven't seen the movie, that won't make much sense to you but I saw it and I would definitely give it two thumbs up! Part of the reason is because I could not honestly remember the last time I had been to a movie. Isn't that sad? I also went with my mom and it was very special. Because there is such a strong mother/daughter theme woven into the plot, I found myself on the verge of tears several times just knowing my mom was sitting next to me and what a special time we were sharing together! She also treated me; which was awesome! Lastly, who know I was such an ABBA fan? Not me but I was pleasantly surprised at how many songs I recognized or instantly fell in love with - all of them! In fact, this past week was a little rough for me with kids being sick all week so my mom cheered me up by buying me the soundtrack! Even the boy wonder has been rocking out to "Dancing Queen." Not so sure that Simon appreciates that too much but at least the kid has his mama's rhythm! So, Mom, here's to you! Thanks for being the best mom in the world and giving me something to aspire to every day that I am blessed to be a mom! I love you!

Baby Boom

Okay, we have been very busy! In the short time span of 48 hours, we have gotten two new nieces/cousins. One from each side of the family. Sweet Andrea Chan (still waiting to hear what her lovely Chinese name will be) was born Sunday night in Hong Kong to two very proud parents! She was a healthy 7 pounds 3 ounces and is beautiful! We can't wait to meet you, sweet girl! Much closer to home, my sister finally had her baby this morning. Abigail Elizabeth was born at 10:37 am and weighed in at a whopping 8 pounds and 11 ounces. I got to be there to hear her first cry. She was actually born in the room right next to where Max was born. The delivery went smoothly and everyone is doing well. What a fun time for Max and Maddy. Two new cousins in less than a week! That doubled their cousin ratios! We will try to get some pictures after we get photo releases from the family!

Confessions of a Clutterbug

Confessions of a Clutterbug:

1. I am not very good at keeping house.

2. I am pretty okay with not being very good at keeping house.

3. I have saved almost every greeting card that has ever been given to me since about the 8th grade. This also applies to ticket stubs but I am getting better about purging those.

4. I am VERY good at the 10-minute tidy: aka: shove as much in the closet and under the bed as possible. I perfected this maneuver in high school when my parents said that I had to have my room clean before I could go out with my friends. Sorry, Mom and Dad; but at least the floor was clean! I would also like to send a shout out to all of those friends who would actually come and help me clean before we were going out because they knew that was the fastest way to get out of the house. You know who you are! :)

5. I am still holding on to some souvenier packets of sugar from my Spring Break trip to Paris that I took my Senior year of high school. You never know when you are going to need to utilize your emergency stash of imported sweetners!

6. I have acquired quite an eclectic collection of matchboxes over the years; which I hope does not decide to spontaneously combust some day. Especially since I just remembered that at the moment it is in Maddy's closet! Yikes.

7. I believe that dusting and vacuuming are over-rated. I will blame this one on my allergies and that anytime I partake in either of the aformentioned chores I am left with a sad sniffle and stuffy snout.

8. I threw away two bags of Halloween candy yesterday after getting a hankering for something sweet only to discover that most of the contents were inedible or tasted/smelled like pesticide. I then realized that half of the candy was from two years ago. This is a true story but at least I lived to tell the tale.

9. If you have ever traveled anywhere with me at any time no matter how short the distance or how brief the trip, you know that there is a good chance that if the need arises for ANYTHING random, I will have it. I have a not-so-secret fear of being away from home and needing something and not having it. And to all of those who have traveled with me, especially those of you who have endured countless hours in the car surrounded by my extensive stash of emergency sewing kits, medical kits, cordless butane curling irons, coils to heat my cup-o-soup, etc. and having to assist me with suitcases bigger than I am, THANK YOU!

Sub-confession #9: I have had more than one occasion when my suitcase came out onto the receiving carosel adorned by a "HEAVY" label fashioned in an exceedingly glaring and derogatory shade of floursecent orange.

10: I actually let my mother-in-law dust my blinds when she visits!

Whew! I can't tell you how liberating it feels to get all of that off of my chest. I feel less cluttered already! Now before any of you don your haz-mat uniforms, call CPS, or nominate me for Clean Sweep, let me assure you, I am trying to reform myself. I struggle daily with feelings of inadequacy for not keeping a tidier domicile. Some of my friends make it looks so easy. Allbeit, many of them are able to "outsource" some of those duties and more power to them. Believe me, I would if I could. Anyway, I am tired of feeling like a failure just because I didn't make my bed today or because I left my breakfast dishes in the sink until I heard my husband's car pulling into the garage after work. Isn't it more important to concern myself with cultivating a home of love and peace and righteousness than concerning myself with not cultivating certain mystery strands of bacteria? I know the old saying, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" and I do try to be a good steward of what the Lord gave me but I am only one woman. Mortal and imperfect. A friend sent me an annonymous saying a while back and I think it is going to be my new mantra. I am determined to have it hanging as a reminder in every room of my house. This is what it says:

Hope my children look back on today
And see parents who had time to play
Cooking and cleaning can wait till tomorrow
For children grow up, I've learned to my sorrow
So settle down cobwebs, dust go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

It's so true!

Okay, now that I have gotten all of that out, maybe I will shut 'er down and go pick up a bit. Later!

Summer Fun

Hello, world! Have had a busy couple of weeks! We had a fun July 4th weekend that included the parade with all of my sister's family and her in-laws and my mom and then had a fun visit with Simon's mom and sister. We had another mixed family celebration and watched the fireworks in the back of my dad's pick-up truck. How very festive of us! We have also been going to the pool a lot on the weekends. It is a little hard for me with my kids being in such different developmental stages to take them by myself so we make it a fun family outing. There is a new water park close by and Max loves it! Maddy even got to go for a ride on the lazy river and seemed relaxed by it. Max and Maddy are so sweet these days. Max has his typical two moments but bounces back from them pretty quickly. Maddy is usually so smiley and really LOVES to laugh at her brother. It is about the cutest thing I have ever seen. She had her 4-month check-up today and weighs a whopping 13 pounds and 11 ounces! She's in the 75% for weight and 50-75% for length. That's my girl! She is having a hard night but we are pumping her full of the good stuff (aka Infant Tylenol) every four hours! Both of my kids will be bigger than me before I know it. They love to "share" toys lately; which really translates into Max wanting any toy that Maddy is playing with. It can be a bit of a problem but provides some "teachable moments" for Max to practice his compassion and sharing - two skills that will serve him well as he heads off to school in the fall! He is a bit of a shy guy in social situations so I think it will be very good for him. I have started back to work VERY part-time, as in right now I have two patients on Monday afternoons. It is really nice because it gets me out of the house for a little while, I get to retain some of my brain cells and put my college education to good use, I bring in a little extra green (which always helps with two little ones in diapers :0 )), and Simon has Mondays off. It gives him some quality Daddy time with the kids and helps him appreciate what I do all day long. Today Max took a short nap and he said it was hard to get anything done with both of them awake. Gee, really? Okay, I will try to post some pic's now and write more later!

Maddy and Max getting ready for the pool

Max and Maddy are ready to get in the water. Max loves water very much.

Blueberries picking last Saturday

Max's first blueberrie picking experience. It was very fun!
