Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree... (2nd Edition)

The beautiful, finished project (a tad blurred). I love fresh trees.

So, the blog posting has been a bit sparse lately.. actually more like non existent due to all of the wonderful Christmas hustle and bustle. A few things we've been up to:

  • L Family Christmas Party
  • H Family Christmas Party
  • D's Work Party
  • Some other parties I'm forgetting about
  • Sibling choir concerts
  • Hunting for some killer shopping deals
  • Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert (did anyone else love the animal song?)
  • Watching First Presidency's Fireside
  • Christmas dates
  • Baking cookies, cinnamon rolls, breads, etc...
  • Dancing lessons with Andi & Aaron for the wedding (Deke has one mean foxtrot)
  • Wrapping
  • Decorating
  • Spending time with family
  • Loving every snowy second of every snowy storm

A little bit typical, but everything a Christmas season should be. We're looking forward to all of the events in the next week and a half too. And WOW! I can't believe Christmas Eve is TOMORROW!!? Holy smokes! Where did the time go? And why do I manage to procrastinate til the very end to do things? Between tonight when I get home from work and tomorrow morning I have to do the following:

  • Finish up some shopping at atleast 2 different stores. Yikes.
  • Wrap about 90% of my gifts which have all been stashed at my mom's (thanks mom :) )
  • Go to dancing lessons
  • Run some things around tonight to a bunch of people
  • Tidy up my house so I don't have a clutter break down on Christmas
  • Make cinnamon rolls so we can start a tradition for Christmas breakfast
  • Shower

All of these things are actually enjoyable activities, but somehow I manage to stress myself out when I have to get all of them done in a small amount of time. I'm going to try really hard to not stress, which, I don't think will be that difficult because it is Christmas after all right? And the magic of Christmas should not be wasted on stress. So, here's to a holiday full of cheer, family, memories, love, and gratitude and reflection about the real reason we celebrate this special day.

Merry Christmas!

Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree..

So, the very fist year we were married, Deke and I started a tradition of cutting down our Christmas tree. Every year we drive to (ironically) Christmas Meadows, hike around til' we find the one, saw it down, and hall it out. This year Andi and her fiance Aaron joined us. We loved having the company! With each year, new adventures and memories are formed and this year didn't fail to disappoint. To start out, the little corner of Utah/Wyoming we ventured to had had some sort of severe ice storm. It was crazy! I had never seen anything like it. For about 5 miles the roads were seriously one huge sheet of black ice. Traffic was backed up forever and there were wrecks all over the place! This camper was one of the tragedies of the day: The road wasn't the only thing covered in ice. Every single plant, twig, tree, and rock had a sheet of ice covering it. Even the snow had a layer of the crunchy stuff. It was the darndest thing. If you look close enough you can see the layer of ice on the snow cracking. Eventually we made it safely to the area we set out for. It was time to find the perfect tree! We hiked over the river.. Through the woods.. And found the perfect tree right on the bank of the picturesque little river. After sawing it down, the men had a brilliant idea to tie a rope to the trees, throw the rope over the river, hike over the river upstream, go back down and find the rope and pull the trees across the river (2 trees were tied together with the same rope). It actually worked pretty well despite the trees floating downstream a little ways.

The men being manly (or would it be menly?) holding the fruits of their labor: A man and his truck. I finally have a good picture of the truck. Wahoo! This beauty got us everywhere we needed to go through ice and snow. That night, we got the tree set up and lights on followed by dinner at Texas Roadhouse and a movie night with the Polar Express. Not a better way to usher in Christmas if you ask me.

Happy Halloween...

...One month late.

Deke and I at Halloween, jock and cheerleader,:

And just so you can see Deke in the full glory of his costume:

Seriously, what is not attractive about that picture? ha! And yes, that's a Davis high basketball jersey from the 70's that he found before they tore down the old school (RIP). We won't even start on those short shorts. Thanks for the pics Andi!

FOR SALE - 2000 Toyota 4Runner

Black exterior, tan leather interior, moon roof, sun roof, cd player, tape deck, runners, power windows/steering, tow package, 119,000 miles, 4x4, Avg 24/mpg, manual transmission. 10,000 OBO. The best car you'll ever have.

I'm really, really sad to see this car leave our family. It's been my very favorite car we've owned (our count is now up to 5). But, all good things must come to an end I guess. It has now been replaced with a slightly beefier, more gas guzzling vehicle seen below which I love as well. I just really love the 4 runner. (This is the best picture of it I could find)

We really don't need 3 cars, and unfortunately, I don't know how to drive a stick, or else I'd keep it for myself. I hope it finds a good home.

XOXO

Happy, Happy Birthday Deke!

Some reasons I think my husband is pretty much the greatest person this side of, well... anywhere:

  • He'll call to tell me little things just because. Like that he just saw the real Santa Claus driving around North Salt Lake, and he was even wearing a candy cane sweater

  • He can kiss like nobody's business

  • He picks out cuter clothes for me than I can for myself (and jewelry, and shoes..). In fact, he buys most of my clothes for me

  • A more "manlier" man than him is hard to come by. Anyone that knows him will tell you he is ALL boy. From his yellow work boots to his collection of guns to his chosen major. Once he told me his dream is to get lost in the middle of the mountains by himself and have to live off the land. And wear a loin cloth. Classic Derek..

  • Even though most nights I go to bed before him, he'll always cuddle with me until I fall asleep

  • He puts up with my quirkiness (like having to make the bed just so, or folding grocery bags into little triangles, or having the vacuum lines be perfect, etc..(and I promise I'm not as OCD as I sound:) )

  • He's just as quirky as I am

  • He sings a lot - even though singing isn't exactly a fantastic talent of his

  • He still gets my doors

  • I've never seen any other man as good with kids as he his. I think it's safe to say that he's hands down, the favorite uncle. I can't wait to see him as a dad.

  • He's one of the most patient people I know (which is good seeing as how I'm not so much this way..)

  • Dull moments don't exist when he's around.

  • He tells me on a daily basis that he loves me. And the best part is, I know he means it.

  • Christmas is just as magical, if not more so, for him than it is for me. Even though it's just us, we still totally wake up at 6:00am to open presents.

  • Generosity is one of his strongest gifts. He would drop anything or give anything to help someone else out.

  • I think every physical aspect of him is GQ worthy, but two of my favorites are 1) His deeply intense eyes. And 2) The rugged scar that connects his nose to his upper lip. mmm...

  • He isn't great at writing birthday/anniversary/mother's day/father's day cards. Why do I love this? Because I'm terrible too. In fact, we mostly just forgo(sp?) the card for most occasions. We both feel you can only say the same thing so many ways before it starts to sound repetitive. Most occasions boil down to a simple "I love you." and "I couldn't ask for anyone better."

  • To me, he is home. I love knowing at the end of the day, whether good or bad, I get to end it in his arms.

I love you Mav. I couldn't ask for anyone better ;).

An P.S. This next picture is for my family. They made fun of him for choosing apple dumplings as his birthday cake because they thought it sounded like some weird pioneer food. Exhibit A:

Yum-may.

I recommend reading this...

I found a really interesting article from Newsweek regarding the relationship between nutrition and fertility. I think it's definitely worth a read even if you're not thinking about having any kids in the near future. All I can say is here's to more ice-cream!

A walk in the past

(WARNING: Many wasted hours await by reading this post. You'll want to try it. Trust me)

So, today at the work, the program I use was down. What to do, what to do.. Fear not! I found a nice little site to keep me entertained: yearbookyourself.com. Quite the lovely little gem of a find if you ask me.

Meet Jennifer Grace of 1950:

I love the rims! Go 1960!

I think this girl was on American Bandstand circa 64'. Check her out:

Nothing like 1980 to bring out the best in one's features:

Oh my! Do you think I went a little too far with the cloud bangs? One thing just lead to another..

MC Hammer Style:

I think I actually had this haircut at one point in time. Ugh.

I saved the best for last. I've got some soul! Give me some skin sista'! (Deke actually requested I get a fro after seeing this pic)

Which one's your favorite?

Lofty Exploring

This last weekend we took full advantage of the perfect indian summer weather and ventured up the Mueller Park Trail to Elephant Rock. It felt great to explore the great outdoors and get a little exercise at the same time although my un-steele-like buns are a little sore today. We chose the greatest weekend with the leaves at their peak and the temperature a balmy 70 degrees.

Christmas is coming..

What? In my last post I'm talking about snow and now I'm writing about Christmas? You betcha'. What is this world coming to? Christmas, my friends, will be here before we know it, so you know what that means?

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING!

Yup. Ya'll need to get on it. And why do I care so much about when you start your shopping?... Because I have a fabulous idea for all of you. Are you ready for it? It's called lia sophia.

lia sophia is a high end jewelry line that I happen to sell. It can be found on the likes of Paris Hilton, Staci London, Jessica Alba, Eva Mendes, my mom, my mom-in-law and me (and they, atleast the last 3, are very classy ladies). Now, lia sophia can run a little pricey unless you work the system. And how do you work the system? Simple. You throw a party.

I'll give you a second to digest that.

I'm serious. I love, love, love their stuff! Go to this website, http://www.liasophia.com/, and in the bottom left there will be a picture of a catalog. Click on "view our catalog" to see the fall line. Isn't it gorgeous? This fall catalog is by FAR my favorite catalog yet. There are so many stunning pieces!

Remember what I said about throwing a party? Here's the awesome deal you get for hosting a qualifying show:

  • 1 Thank you piece for $15 (I bring this and give it to you at your show after you've picked it out.)

  • 4 additional pieces for $15 each (any item regularly over $100 will have a specially marked hostess bonus price, usually $20)

  • 2 Items for 50% off

  • 20% of your show sales in FREE jewelry

  • ..or if you get 10 orders and 2 bookings from your show you get 40% of your show sales in FREE jewelry for only $15

Isn't that pretty great? By no means do you need to use all of these benefits if you decide to throw a show. In fact, you could just buy the 1 thank you piece for 15$ and call it good (you would however, still get the 20% in free jewelry. I know.. real harsh.) But, if you do decide to use all of your benefits then you can get some fantastic, high quality gifts for family/friends for Christmas for relatively cheap.

When I threw a party (before I sold lia sophia) I ended up spending about $180 and got $900 worth of jewely. Yup. Killer deal. And the best thing is, you can do it too.

So, here's the best part: The first 2 people who sign up for a party get their thank you piece for FREE. Do you realize what I'm saying? You could technically throw a party for FREE because I would buy your thank you piece. What isn't to love about that? You can even throw a party with a friend to split the cost. Just leave a comment if you want to throw a party and we'll start to get it rolling. Let me know soon, because I'll fill up fast!

I promise you won't regret it. Merry Christmas!

Winter... er....make that Fall Wonderland

Yet another weekend full of friends, games, movies, good food, and even better weather. Remember the pictures from the cabin 2 posts ago?

Same place, exactly one week later:

Isn't it absolutely beautiful? I loved every snowy second of it.

We also had about 10-15 of these visitors:

We found this darling little creature crawling around as well (courtesy of Danny and Sarah :) )

I couldn't feel luckier to live where I do. Who in the world could ever get sick of the beauty that surrounds us? If any of you say "I" then please move and leave more room for the rest of us...j/k. Kind of.

Cheers to Fallinter.

More tag. This time it's the high school one from Sarah..

I might post pictures with this one later. I'm just tired of being on the computer.. :)

Did you date people from your high school?
It depends on what you mean by date.. I never got serious with anyone, but dated a lot of people casually from our school and a few from Layton/Viewmont.

What car did you drive?
Good ole’ Bess, my very first car. She was a bright red 98’ chevy blazer with a zebra striped steering wheel cover. She was full of awesomeness. Unfortunately Bess’ s life came to an end when my dad took her on some errands one fateful Saturday morning. Her frame was totaled in an accident (my dad wasn’t hurt fortunately) and she had to be put to rest. I was sad Bess was gone, but the thing I mourned the most was the full tank of gas I had just put in. I hated spending money (and still do), and on my minimum wage Cherry Hill salary, a whole day of work had gone down the drain. Pathetic. I know. RIP.

After that, I still had a pretty sweet car though. I drove a 2000 silver GMC Sonoma 4x4 truck. She lasted through my freshman year of college when she was handed down to my little bro’. I must have jinxed my high school vehicles because the week before I got married said little bro was in a big pile up accident on I-15 and totaled the poor truck (he wasn’t hurt either). I miss driving 4x4’s. A lot.

Most embarrassing moment?
For some reason I can’t remember any of my embarrassing moments from high school – I know they’re there I just can’t remember! (although I can think of plenty from both junior high and college). Here’s the best one I’ve got: Senior year I went with one of my good friends from Layton to the Layton Prom. When the date was over, he walked me to the front porch, went in for a hug, and the second he touched me a huge bright commercial grade spotlight centered right on us. A few of my “friends” (see boys’ names in best friend question below) decided it would be really entertaining to spotlight our doorstep scene. Really, it was probably more embarrassing for my prom date than for me – I felt kind of bad that our date ended with 4 other boys coming to “welcome” us back. I could have punched em’ all, but I guess I should feel honored that they thought they should be a part of my night, right? Yah… not so much.

(UPDATE: I just remember another one! The Hirschi family was over for a barbeque the night of my first date – Brady Morris. The Hirschi boys and my brothers thought it would be really funny to greet him with a shotgun. Hmm…. Nothing like a bunch of football players and a .22 to send you on your way. And, what’s with Jord ruining my dates?)

Were you considered a party animal?
Probably not in the literal sense, but I had as much fun as a straightlaced mormon girl could.

Were you a flirt?
I can lie and say no, but let’s be honest, I loved flirting, and that probably wasn’t a secret. Seriously, you have no idea how many sticky situations I got myself into (college included) because someone got the wrong idea. It was just so darn fun. I can’t remember how many times Jarmen would yell at me in madrigals “Jenny!! Stop flirting and get in your seat!” all while giving ‘the glare’. In fact, I remember a few girlfriends of certain guy friends who weren’t the biggest fan of me. Ooops. I had a little growing up to do. This might have played a factor as to why I didn’t have a ton of close girl friends in high school. Still trying to figure that one out… But good times were plentiful because of my so called ‘talent’.

Were you in band, orchestra, or choir?
Very involved in choir, madrigals, and musical productions as well as studying the violin privately.

Were you a nerd?
I think I’ve always been a nerd! Although I always loved a good party, nothing’s better than locking yourself in your room with a good book. I thought it was important to get good grades and academically challenge yourself, so I did the whole honors and AP thing. I’m actually really glad I did too. I learned more in some of those classes than in some upper division college courses.

Did you get suspended or expelled?
Nope.

Can you still sing the fight song?
Most of it.

Who were your best friends?
Rachel Taylor, Matt Dorius, Jord Hirschi, Dave Johnson, and Dave Firmage

Where did you sit during lunch?
Bowmans, Wendy’s, or my house. Nothing like mashed potato Thursdays at Bowmans.

School Mascot?
Dart. Yup, it reeks of coolness.

Did you go to Homecoming? With who?
Junior year, Davis - Dave Firmage,
Junior year, Viewmont – Jordan Augustine,
Senior year, Davis - Greg Dixon.

If you could go back and do it again would you?
Maybe for a week or two. High school was really fun and everything, and I definitely lived a fairy tale high school life, but I think I would get really sick of all the clique-ness, gossip, early curfews , drama, and homework pretty quickly now that I’ve grown up a little bit. I’m happy with where I am now.

What do you remember most about graduation?
Thinking.. “Could this go any slower?” then later.. I’m free! Later curfew! No more AP tests!

Where did you go senior skip day?
What in the heck is senior skip day? Did I ever sluff class? You bet.

Have you gained weight?
Nope. Pretty much the exact same.

Who were your prom dates?
Junior year, Davis: Brady Morris,

Senior year, Viewmont: K**k Steele (one of the worst dates EVER. Really it’s a pretty funny story full of throw up, standing in pouring rain for hours (no coat), private secluded tables, and extreme awkwardness. I hadn’t spoken to this guy since ninth grade, and even then I could probably count the number of times we had talked in under 10 fingers.)

Senior year, Layton: Shane Stratford (see embarrassing moment story above)

Senior year, Davis: Marcus Smoot. This was probably one the most fun dances I went to in high school. I had had a crush on Marcus since elementary school, but we had never really hung out in the same groups. He was a Cool Clubber and I was a total Coalition girl I’m afraid. (P.S. weren’t those labels so stupid? Wow.). But, he asked me and it was so fun! Definitely one of my favorite high school memories.

Are you going to your 10 year reunion?
I’d love to. We had some amazing people in our class and I’d love to see what they’ve been up to.

Looking back what advice would you give yourself?
2 things: 1) Don’t care so much what other people think (particularly those of the opposite gender) and 2) Study for the ACT. I never studied and always partied late the night before I took this. I ended up getting a pretty decent score, so I would have loved to see what I could have done had I really applied myself.

I tag Erin, Rach, and Ashlee

Conference Weekend

This last weekend was spent at... where else! The cabin. We've been there 3 of the last 4 weekends, and after seeing these pictures you'll know why. Between being spiritually fed by our church leaders and soaking in the grandeur of God's creations, I felt as though I had had a spiritual Thanksgiving feast!

One of my favorite talks was by President Monson about finding joy in the journey. If only every moment were as easy to enjoy as this weekend!

Unfortunately it had to come to an end, but at least we have these pics to remember it by. Here are few of my favorites..

He wouldn't let me get one of his face, so this will have to do:

Oh October, how I love thee.

Tres Anos.

3 years, 6 moves, 8 countries, too many jobs to count (seriously), 4 cars, many tubs of ice-cream, 1 college degree, 3 university changes, 1 real estate purchase, lots of firsts, a few "disagreements', some tears, and even more laughs later..

I find myself more in love than I ever thought possible.

Here's to the first three....

And here's to the next three billion. :)

I wouldn't want to spend it with anyone else.

I love you.

Go Cougars!

A few weeks ago we ventured down to Provo to support my alma mater with a few family members. There's nothing like a college football game to usher in Fall. Besides a little sunburn, the day was perfect! The Cougars came away with a shutout which made it all the better.

One of the biggest fans out there:(I love this picture... Trev is such a little ham!)

Token couple shot (yes... I know..I look completely posed):

We had such a great time staying overnight at Grandma's, and I got to catch up with old roommates. Usually as soon as I start driving down University Avenue toward campus, a wave of stress washes over me. Too many memories of tests, papers, and dates gone bad I guess. But, that feeling is thankfully starting to disappear.. For a trip to Provo, this weekend couldn't have been better.

Yet another trip to the cabin..

We went exploring up the river at Smith & Morehouse near the cabin last week, and it was absolutely gorgeous. Very picturesque. I could never get sick of that place. In fact, it's Derek and I's dream to eventually live somewhere like Oakley, Kamas, etc. I'll just keep crossing my fingers...
