The Conquest of Space (1962?)

 

I last blogged about this book in 2015 so it is time for a revisit. I got a second copy that has a couple of things I had not seen before. The Conquest of Space is a 1962 (?) Australian stamp album. It is intended for children to collect paper stamps they get in Nestle chocolate bars and then they could send away for this album.

One of my favorite features is the certificate in the front. You also got a "Nestle's Space Club" pin which this copy still had in the book. 

Below is one of the stamps. On the back it tell you how to order the stamp album. There were 100 stamps in total if you completely filled the album.

Moon Fleet Log Book (1966)

 

The Moon Fleet Log Book was a book distributed by Wall's Ice Cream to collect space cards that came with the ice cream. There were spaces for 24 cards. This book was incomplete but still worth sharing with you.

The Conquest of Space (1962?) (Part 2)

A continuation of my post about this 1962ish Nestle chocolate stamp book. (I love this cover so much I had to post it again.) Many of these images may be familiar to you but I still love them when presented to children as the world they may live in.

The Conquest of Space (1962?) (Part 1)

This is a "chocolate stamp" book from Australia. The date is around 1962-1964 but I have not figured it out exactly. Nestle's chocolate company put collectable stamps inside chocolate bars and them gave kids the option of buying an album to put them in.  So the resolution of these images may not be great because the actual image is a small stamp.

This certificate of membership was often part of these books. They had several different stamp books on different subjects. I know of also one on "the world on wheels" and one about aircraft.

 Not really sure what the artist was doing that made them imagine the Moon's surface like this.

Wonders of Space Stamps (1954)

These "Golden Books" were everywhere and there were stamps for all sorts of subjects. This is the earliest of the space related stamps books.  Each stamp is a little jewel of space art.

There are so many images that rather than scan each I scanned the sheets of stamps.

These stamp books had simple text and 48 color stamps to glue in the appropriate places. George Solonewitsch's stamp art includes paintings of the planets and a rocket to the Moon.

But you should not discount a little extra space art from William Discount (sorry). His drawings of a couple of space scenes to go with the stamps are also a hidden treasure.

This is the only page that has any space flight text but these next few images are nicely futuristic about what children could expect from space flight.

Beside the Moon mankind would also eventually go to tthe other planets.
