FanzinEra / Back to Human Nature

I've had a very busy but enjoyable week in Sundsvall together with Carl Abrahamsson, curating his FanzinEra exhibition. It contains photographs taken between 1985-1988 for his zines Lollipop & Acts of Interstellar Torture. They capture sensational moments of the eighties underground movement that otherwise are condemned to fall into oblivion or fade as stapled xeroxed paper in a closet... the historic value of these photographs can't be denied. FanzinEra contains photographs of legendary underground personalities such as Richard Kern, Genesis P-Orridge, Leathernun, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Thurston Moore, Freddie Wadling, Joe Coleman, Lux Interior, Lydia Lunch etc. All issues of his old zines are also on display in a glass cage. Great reading while killing time in the gallery!

For those unable to visit the exhibition, I can reveal that a book is in the making, featuring a large amount of live & backstage photos, quotes, trivia and texts dealing with the sleaziest aspects of the eighties underground. Yesterday we held a screening of the film program "Back to Human Nature". I was completely carried away by the stunning "Taiwaskivi" by Halo Manash from Finland. This alone makes it a must-have in your collection!

“Back to human nature!” contains new cinematic work by four Swedish artists and one Finnish audiovisual group. Dynamic, consciousness-expanding and awareness-raising, these films range from minimalistic meditations, animated analyses, over ritualistic reverence and psychic soulsearching, to primordial possession. With minimal means, these artists have created unique multidimensional visions of an inner state of mind and, more importantly, of experimental magical attempts to overcome the frustrations we all experience in contemporary culture, urbanized globalisation and technological stress. Their results are colourful cinematic talismans, beamed from five highly creative mind-entities to the world outside.

”Intermediate” (Fetish 23, Sweden, 2009, 12 min)
An ever fluctuating diptych with images of urban and natural landscapes in interaction. With a stunning soundtrack by Moljebka Pvlse, the impact is one of serene beauty and transformative power.

”Taiwaskivi” (Halo Manash, Finland, 2009, 50 min)
Halo Manash’s audiovisual shamanism spellbinds our apprehensions and breaks open our heads. With an archaic and atavistic animism straight from our primordial psyche, these groundbreaking Finnish artists seduce and impregnate the viewer with a stern sense of ritual force.

”Stress call of the stinging nettle” (Christine Ödlund, Sweden, 2009, 8 min)
A potently poetic display of organic beings gearing up for survival. The intricate defense- and intercommunication-systems of plants take us on a journey within ourselves. What can we learn?

”Decennial Celebratory Solidarity Ritual” (Nadine Byrne, Sweden, 2009, 17 min)
Five priestesses/goddesses congregate in a deserted quarry to perform a ritual of sacrifice. Intuitive, beautiful and thought-provoking actions take place. We may not be able to change history’s twists and turns, but (sub)conscious magic can certainly help heal emotional wounds.

”Where is here?” (Gustaf Broms, Sweden, 2009, 42 min)
In this incredibly ambitious psychedelic epic, we follow a protagonist on his magical trip from despair to hope. With an overflowing visual texture, Broms weaves a truly multidimensional web of strong impressions. Where are we heading? Fear of God & Filthy Christians

One of our favourite bands from Switzerland is Fear of God... Per Tuna (Bruce Banner / Protes-Bengt / Filthy Christians) told me that he had done some digging in his archives and just found photos from a show in Germany 1988.07.03 where he shared stage with F.O.G. During my exhibition in Sundsvall last year, I xeroxed pages from the book "Svenska Bordeller" by Ragnar Åslund, a pocketguide to swedish bordellos in the late 60s... what made it unique was the clearsighted portrayal of Sundsvall as the lowest place on earth. In mid-90s one of my favourite zines was Black / Salong Finess - this is where I first came to learn about the existence of this book.... Thanks to David for the nice scans.

Below is a text by Norrlands own Hunter S. Thompson - Erik Jonsson dealing with Ghoulson boss & the mystic life of Ragnar Åslund. Published in Sundsvalls Tidning 14/12 - 2009:

TIDIG UNDERGROUND I SUNDSVALL

Multikonstnären Kristian Olssons originella och oroande vernissage på Galleri Granen avslutades under den gångna veckan.

En salig röra subversivitet och obscenitet rördes runt i hans kollagekonst, varav särskilt ett verk manade till skratt och eftertanke. Bland bomber och granater satt ett försiktigt uppslag ur författaren Ragnar Åslunds kryptiska kultbok Svenska bordeller, från 1967, uppspikat.

Den ursprungliga boken var tänkt som ”En kartläggning av etablissemang i Sverige, till tjänst för resande och turister” och täcker av 55 bordeller runt om i landet – samtliga poängsatta och recenserade.

Frågan är ifall man även kan se den som ett debattinlägg mot en då liggande motion om statliga bordeller? Hur som helst innehåller boken en mycket speciell humor, inte minst i kartläggningen av städernas kringliggande kulturklimat.

Sundsvall, får vi genom Kristian Olssons försorg lära oss, ”karakteriseras bäst med begreppen materialism, obildning, egoism, råhet. Invånarna har grova och frånstötande drag, och deras intresse kretsar huvudsakligen kring poker, boxning och hästspel. Trakten, som är den tätast befolkade i Sverige, vimlar av tattare, skojare, dagdrivare och gangsters, speciellt koncentrerade till förorterna Skönsberg och Svartvik.”

”Hur den store konstnären och esteten Lars Ahlin kunnat utvecklas i denna ohyggliga miljö” är för Åslund en gåta men, konstaterar han, ”det sägs ju för all del att det växer rosor på gödselhögar.”

Hemlig bordell hade i alla fall Sundsvall. Det skulle ha legat på adressen ”Utfarten 36” och drivits av en Ingvar Nyhlén. Förmodligen är den, som med andra städer i boken, bara ett falsarium. Lustinrättningarna i boken har med högsta sannolikhet aldrig existerat. Snarare skrevs Svenska bordeller i syfte att chockera och underhålla.

Det hade också kunnat uppfattas som förmätet med en Sundsvallssågning av detta slag, om det inte vore för att den mystiske författaren – om vilket mycket litet hittills varit känt – fötts just i Sundsvall. Ragnar var adoptivson till fabriksarbetaren Carl Åslund och Hanna Boman. Han förde ett kringflackande liv och byggde under tiden upp en märklig bibliografi.

Utbildad på handelsgymnasium, men med humoristiska ambitioner, kom Åslund endera stunden att författa pedagogiska manualer, för att vid nästa tillfälle sätta ihop ekivoka handböcker som Ju fler vi är tillsammans: Modärn lekbok i erotik, från 1966. Utöver detta skrev han precis som den personlige vännen Birger Norman samt mentorn Jan Fridegård diktsamlingar och romaner.

Alla sticker på något vis ut. Pingvinstaten [1975] är en fantastisk samtidssatir över ett samhälle snarlikt vårt men befolkat av just pingviner, och Kära barn! [1978] är en novellistisk nidbild där karaktärerna Fabian Yhr och Oxford är tänkta som porträtt av författarförbundets dåvarande envåldshärskare Jan Myrdal respektive Lars Gustafsson.

Åslund publicerade sig även i Lasse O'Månssons tidskrift HjäLP!. I samma veva skrev han för TV, körde bryggarbil och läste av elmätare runt landet runt. Först när han under en mätaravläsning träffade sin fru Ulla-Britt tog ett lugnare liv vid, med anställning som redaktör för Sparbanken vid Sergels torg. Författandet blev alltmer av en sidosysselsättning.

En av de senare böckerna, Ådalen: En motbild [1981], är likväl värd att nämna. Den behandlar förstås katastrofen femtio år tidigare. Ragnars adoptivfar Carl hade gått med i den ödesdigra demonstrationsmarschen och nästan känt skotten vina runt öronen. Han var en av de som försökte väcka liv i de skjutna. Sonen, som föddes samma år, har förstås skrivit en gripande skildring av dessa ögonblick.

Ragnar Åslund dog 1986 hjärtinfarkt. Hans bitska och humoristiska skriverier blev oerhört älskade bland ett fåtal invigda, men texterna finns knappt att få tag på idag. På biblioteken är flera ovannämnda verk stulna. Vore det inte för att uppkommande kulturarbetare som Kristian Olsson visste att värdera tidigare pionjärarbetare inom undergroundlitteratur och -konst skulle ingen veta vem Ragnar Åslund var idag.

Lonely Violent Beach

Order is again established in my daily life after a long and painful divorce. For the moment I am still without a proper home, but I have made sure that my collection is in safety. One of the advantages with moving after all these years has been the insane amount of material that comes up to the surface after being buried in piles of tapes and books... I found a vhs copy of Ernesto Gastaldis great "Lonely Violent Beach". Over the years I have separated with women, friends, personal belongings, my freedom and so on - something I never parted with though is the few videocassettes I have from the swedish Baroness label. One of the titles on this label was Våldets Strand.... I found this tasteful poster for it and had to share it. Eventually I'll add the cover artwork for the swedish rental too. I also found a few copies of the DVDR bootleg of this title we did under the Skvader Film label (actually most for our own enjoyment)... if anyone is interested I can part with them for a resonable price. Me and Tony (Alfarmania) did this years ago and actually managed to put out a few ultrarare / impossible titles. Sourced from original vhs to dvdr and custom dvd artwork based on posters and rental boxart. I list a few here for examples:
Shadows Unseen, Prostituzione / Street Angels, Giallo a Venezia, The Hokey-Pokey Gang, Violence for Kicks, Ready for Anything, Cop-In, The Eye in the Labyrinth, The Tunnel / Eroina, The Hawk & The Dove, Lucky the Inscrutable, Rat Savior and many others.... however, this was years ago and is hardly something there is time (or need) for nowadays. Most titles can be downloaded from some of the nice torrent communities or bought through reliable mailorders such as Videodrome in Sundsvall (best supplier of exploitation & horror in northern europe!)
