Symbolism- making something stand for something else. Foreshadowing- to show or tell about something in advance. Authors use them to be more descriptive in their writings.

Number Five.

Can you imagine a witch trial like this in today's world, in the U.S.? Why or why not? What has changed to make such an event impossible or what has remained the same to make it possible?


I couldn't really imagine a witch trial in today's world, because things have changed so much. People aren't so scared and worried about witches anymore. If someone was accused to be a witch, people wouldn't really pay much attention to if, almost as if we don't even care about if someone is a 'witch' or not. Even though there are still very religious people, they aren't as strict as they were in Salem. They're opened to much more, and just kind of accept a lot of it. And then people aren't as hysterical as they were back then either.

Number Four.

Although Abigail is jealous of Elizabeth Proctor, she is not the only source of evil in the play. John Proctor’s deception during his affair with Abigail, when he made a physical “promise” to her, is the source of the play’s conflict.

I agree that Abigail isn’t the only source of evil in the play. Not everything that has happened in the play has been a result of the things between her and John Proctor. I do however, think that it is a huge source of the evil. But other things have happened that have caused some of the things going on in Salem.

The girls trying to stir things up, Thomas Putnam wanting people to die to get their land, and other things have really nothing to do with the situation that happened between Abigail and Proctor. It’s been several different things that have caused all the fuss in Salem.

Number Two.

If you were a towns person in Salem, what changes would you make to solve the current dilemma? What would you do differently?
What is your opinion on Reverend Parris' response to the current situation? How would you evaluate his character, based on his response?


I would stop blaming people and not talk about others, and not be so scared of things. I wouldn't be so judgmental. I would try to get others to be the same, and hopefully that would help some.
I think Parris' response is a little dramatic. He's a lot like everyone else, if you can't figure something out then it has to have witchcraft involved. Which scares him since he's the minister of Salem, he thinks a lot about his job.
