First Dates

The problem with first dates is this. There is absolutely no guarantee of a second. It most instances I've been just fine with that; after-all, I've had some REALLY bad first dates. But when a date goes well the girl is left at the end of the night wondering if it really did. Even if the guy says he'll call, there is no social contract that says he has to. After the first couple of dates you can simply not hear from someone. No explanation, just no further communication and that's deemed to be completely okay. After about 3 I think some kind of dialog should take place but after the first 2, none is needed.
It's similar to a guy asking a girl for her number and then never calling. She's just left waiting and wondering if he ever will.

Born in the Wrong Decade

So after some serious consideration I have become convinced that I was simply born in the wrong decade. I absolutely love t-shirts and jeans, that's pretty much all I wear, but that's due mostly to laziness. I dressed up as a 1920's Flapper Girl the other night for a Mocktail Party and let me tell you, that's where it's at. The glitter, the fringe, the gloves, accessories head to toe... what more can a girl as for. Plus I rock the head piece. I've decided I need to make that into an everyday staple. The question is... Can I pull that one off with my jeans?

Really... that's your answer

I started school on Monday this past week.  After a 7 year break I must say, it's a little strange being back.  I'm only taking one class, Statistics, which I have actually taken before - 11 years ago.  As I was sitting in class both Monday and Wednesday I couldn't help but think that there are some really stupid questions that people ask.  I mean really, do you not know what a placebo is?  Now I'm not saying I'm a genius, I myself say and do some pretty idiotic things.  The difference is that I try really hard not to waste other peoples time with my idiocy.
The most entertaining part is my instructor.  He's way to nice to say what you can tell he's really thinking by the look on his face.  He simply writes the given answer up on the board and then proceeds to spend 5 minutes explaining how it may be correct in a given situation but he would not include it in his answer. Or he will spend 10 minutes going through an example to explain a concept that should make perfect sense to anyone who has passed the Math or English needed to take the course in the first place.  So please, if you have a valid question ask it.  But if you are the only one in the room that doesn't understand the concept that has already been explained three times... please save your questions until after class!!!

LIve What You Believe or Decide if You Really Believe It

On Sunday I taught the lesson in Relief Society. It was from the Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: George Albert Smith. I absolutely love these books. The first lesson was entitled Living What You Believe. It's a lesson I think everyone can learn from and of which no one is perfect. It applies to every religion, race, and age.  Here's a story that was shared from the life of President Smith.

So this is where we can all do better. No matter what your religion or beliefs, if people don't know what they are by the way that you live or what you do then maybe you should rethink what it is that you actually believe.
"Within the last year, I have had the privilege of meeting and conversing on the gospel with some men who live in this community [Salt Lake City], not members of our Church. One man had resided here for twenty years, a man whose life is above reproach, a good citizen, a splendid business man, one who has kindly feelings towards our people. He told me that he had lived here twenty years, and he had come to the conclusion that we were just as good as our neighbors who are members of other churches; he could not see any difference in us.
I want to say to you, my brethren and sisters, that is no compliment to me. If the gospel of Jesus Christ does not make me a better man, then I have not developed as I should, and if our neighbors not in this Church can live among us from year to year and see no evidence of the benefits that come from keeping the commandments of God in our lives, then there is need for reform in Israel.
… Are you doing your duty? are we performing the labor that the Lord has entrusted to our care? do we sense the responsibility that is upon us? or are we idly floating down stream, going with the tide taking it for granted that in the last day, we will be redeemed?"

So this is where we can all do better. No matter what your religion or beliefs, if people don't know what they are by the way that you live or what you do then maybe you should rethink what it is that you actually believe. Now I'm not saying to shove it in anyones face but if you truly believe something it should become a major part of who you are, not just a Sunday attitude or habit. It is a way of life.

Of Modesty and Men

It's been awhile, apparently I've been a little preoccupied elsewhere over the last few months. Let's just take it as getting all kinds of new ideas to blog. Today the Elder's Quorum President came into relief society to ask the girls their qualms about dating. Things they think the guys in the ward should now. Many things were mentioned; the need to ask, plan something, keep it simple, keep it cheap, etc. Throughout the 15 minute discussion there was one thing that kept coming to mind. I wasn't sure that I could say it in front of a captive relief society audience so I decided to wait until later to bring it up. I also found it blog worthy.

So here is the question of the day/week/month/year that I have had. Why is it that men/boys think it's okay to date females that dress immodestly. Especially the return missionaries that spent 2 years teaching the gospel. I know you're supposed to teach modesty in those lessons, I did it. They say that's not who they want to marry, but newsflash: You marry who you date. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. All it's doing is giving them positive feedback. For example, dancing the other night, there was a girl wearing a skirt that was way too short for any kind of dancing, yet she kept getting asked, while others in pants did not. In my ward it is the younger girls in the short skirts and low tops that are always being asked out, while others that are just as attractive but cover up never get asked out once. And I'm tired of hearing the modesty lessons in Relief Society. Those girls know them, but until the men stop giving positive reinforcement to their disobedience they are never going to change.

My question for the men is, are you going to be okay when your daughters dress that way. Because obviously your girlfriends/someday-to-be-wifes think that it's alright, and who do you think will be shopping with them, not you! Also, people don't change the way they dress just because they go to the temple to get married. A habit's a habit and if they think it's okay now it's not suddenly going to change overnight. So be a man and live what you supposedly taught. Better yet, help a girl out and teach them that dressing that way is not okay!
