I just talked to someone today at the Blue Chip Group outlet store (yes they now have a store you can go to anytime and get anything you need, WOW!), and was told that starting next Monday, the 5th, Harmon's start their case lot sale, and on Wednesday, the 7th, Macey's starts theirs. Thought you might like a heads up. In case you don't know, the Blue Chip Group is the company that makes the Morning Moo brand milk and other products. Oh, they're also having a sale at their outlet store starting next week. The address is 432 W. 3440 S. SLC. It's just south of 3300 S. west of the freeway, off of 500 W. PROJECT TEDDY BEAR

This would be a geat thing to do for family night to show children the true meaning of christmas. It would also help clear out unused items to create more space.

PROJECT TEDDY BEAR

Please donate a new or gently used teddy bear or stuffed animal to benefit abused children throughout Utah. Teddy bears will be given to at-risk children at the Family Support and Treatment Center in Orem and the Family Support Center in Midvale to aid in therapy sessions.

Call Danielle Cahoon to have stuffed animals picked up, or drop them off at any Bank of American Fork branch through December 15.

Pantry Organization Containers

Good Deal On Wheat

I didn't really want to do any bulk buying until January, but when I heard about this deal on wheat (from Howard Winsors brother) I thought maybe some of you might be interested either for your self or as gifts. It's hard red wheat. 50 lb. for $15.00, 100 lb. for $30.00 and #10 cans for $3.00 (approximately 5.5 lb in a can). This is wheat from Idaho, and is said to be the best wheat the grower (Howard's cousin) has ever grown. It's a high protein content wheat. I know it's red, and everyone wants white, but sometimes you take the deals where you can find them.
Though it's a good deal, I do have to mention that you can get hard red wheat from the cannery for 25 lb. for $6.75, though. Let me know if you want to get on the list for the wheat (not the cannery wheat, you can pick that up yourselves). I also want to mention that I have buckets available at my house if you need any. I have 4 gal. buckets for $1.50 and 5 gal. buckets for $2.50. Let me (Michelle)know if you would like any of them.

Dry Pack Canner Available

Kim Zebley called me tonight, to let me know she has a dry pack canner next Tuesday, Nov. 18th in the morning, through Thursday the 20th in the morning. She only needs it for a few hours, so she wanted to make the canner available to those who may want to do some canning. So if you do, give her a call for scheduling 766-4138. Christmas on a budget

We're going to start a list of Christmas ideas, tips and recipes, we can all use while staying on a budget. We would love to have you add to this list. This is a really good way to help each other out this Christmas, during difficult times and even for when times are better. We will be posting our ideas soon and look forward to hearing from you.

Here is my first suggestion in this post. Some of the things I've really loved doing over the years that are budget friendly and from the heart, are gifts from the kitchen. My neighbors used to love it when I would make a loaf of quick bread (lemon, pumpkin, banana, etc) in a small loaf pan, wrap it up straight out of the oven, and send my kids out to the neighbors with it. I also got great reviews from making the "cookies in a jar". One of the neighbors told me they wouldn't let their kids make cookies from it because it was too pretty, so it sat on their counter. None of these things costs much, you can even get used jars from D.I. for pennies. If you need recipes, contact me (Michelle) or get online and look up cookies in a jar recipes, there are plenty.
If you don't want to do something sweet, make up a "dinner kit" or spice mixs for rice, etc. and put them in ziploc bags or jars (if you can sew a straight line, you could make a fabric bag like the ones you find in the store with mixes in, like Lehi Roller Mills) and put it in a cute basket with a bow or just tie a ribbon around the bag or jar. You could also make up your favorite "mix", such as brownie mix, muffin mix, pancake mix, hot cocoa mix, put it in a container (like a plastic bag in a fabric bag like Lehi Roller Mills) for a fraction of the cost of purchasing it from the store.
It doesn't have to be grandiose, the point is to let people know you're thinking of them. What ever you do, do the best you can and be happy with that. Just a couple of cents worth of thought there.

If you haven't checked out the everydayfoodstorage web page yet, now is the time. She has a great recipe and video about how to make your own condensed soups. Very easy. She has a lot of other great recipes, videos and helpful hints. She's one of the reasons I don't do more of those kinds of things, why do it twice. Anyway, check out her blog. Little hint, her husband works with Dan Harrison. Interesting, huh? Let us know what you think.

Pandemic Planning

I've felt compelled, recently, to talk about the whole pandemic "thing". For years I've ignored the comments made in the news and other media about the "bird flu pandemic". I just thought it was just one more thing for people to scare us with. Then one day I heard that there is information about pandemic preparedness on the provident living website. Of course, rather than taking someone's word for it, I checked out the website and sure enough it's there, and not just one page of information. Then I thought I would "google" for some other official information on it. The U.S. government actually has several pages of information about pandemic preparedness, and links to more information about cause and affect of the pandemic. Very interesting stuff, I must say. I'm not a "dooms day" kind of person. I just like to be as informed as possible, so I can be as ready as I can be for any situation. Mind you, I have plenty of preparing to do, but I still like information. I've found several websites and blogs with good flu pandemic information, no dooms day stuff, just real information. I would like to encourage you to take some time and look over the links. I will probably add to the link list as I find good enough sites to share. I would love to hear your opinions about the flu pandemic, for or against. Please know that I'm not in any way trying to scare anyone, or anything like that, I just wanted to pass along some information I feel is important in our preparedness planning for our families. After all, being prepared means being prepared for any situation.

Dry Pack Cannery Update

I went to the dry pack cannery a couple of weeks ago and found out some interesting news. First, it is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Then, you can go in any time on those two days, and do any amount of canning you want. No signing up, no waiting for your stake schedule, no leaving a message and not getting a call back for scheduling!! Just go there, fill out your paperwork, can, pay, and go home. It's fabulous! For a list of the items they carry, and pricing, go to http://www.providentliving.org/ and look it up. I know there are many of you who will be as excited as I am about this change. Let me know if you would like someone to go with you, if I'm not busy, I'd love to.
As comments have been coming in, there has been some additional information needed to get people to the correct place for the pricing information. Here is some information that hopefully will help. When you get into the www.providentliving.org website, scroll down a bit to the "family home storage" section and click on it. On the right hand side of the "family home storage" page is a list of things to look at. The one you want will say "home storage center order form", click on that. It will bring up the page with a list of which order form you want to look at at the bottom of the page. Also, on the bottom right, will be a place to pull up a print formatted order form. I hope that helps. Let me know if you need more info.

Bean Arithmetic

I found this information on the Prepare Today Newsletter blog, which is LDS based, that I thought would be helpful.

A pound of beans measures about 2 cups.
Beans triple in volume when soaked and cooked.
A cup of dry beans yields 3 cups cooked.
A pound of dry beans yields 6 cups cooked.
Use 3 cups of water per cup of dry beans for soaking.
Simmer each pound of beans 2 hours after soaking.
A pound of dry beans makes about 9 servings of baked beans.
A pound of dry beans makes about 12 servings of bean soup.
A one-pound can of cooked beans measures about 2 cups.

(Using the above figures)Five (5) pounds of beans per month works out to roughly 10 cups of dry beans or 30 cups once they're cooked. Therefore, 5 pounds dry beans per month equals about 1 cup cooked beans per day (not per meal - per DAY).Beans can also be ground into flour to expand their versatility. One (1) #10 can holds between 5.2 and 5.5 pounds of beans.Twenty-five (25) pounds of grain per month works out to about 13 ounces of uncooked grain a day or roughly 2 cups uncooked. Using the chart below you can see that 1 cup of grain yields anywhere from 2.5 - 4 cups once cooked, depending on the grain.Four and a third (4 1/3) #10 cans hold just about 25 pounds of whole grain. However, rolled grains take up just a bit more than nine (9) #10 cans. Thinking outside the pan Don't overlook the idea of sprouting your whole grains to increase their taste variety and nutritional impact.

Bulk Potato Order

We are ordering Idaho Potatoes in bulk. These potatoes will be delivered straight from Idaho and are cleaned, sorted and packaged in a 50lb box for only $18.00. (They should last all winter, if stored in a cool, dry place.)

Orders are due by Monday, November 3rd. We prefer orders emailed to sunrisemeadows1@live.com, but Michelle Wallace will be accepting some from those of you who do not have computer access. Please give cash to Michelle by November 3rd. We will know the delivery date soon after the order is placed.

ALL ORDERS MUST BE PICKED UP ON DELIVERY DAY. If you can not pick them up, please make arrangements. (It is not fair to burden Michelle with countless potatoes for two long.)

Prescription Medications

Many people have asked how to have extra prescription meds. for a 72 hr. kit, when you aren't allowed to get even a few days of extra to have on hand. My suggestion is to get your prescription filled 3-4 days before you run out. Put the date on the bottle of the 3-4 days of meds. that you have left and put them in your kits. Do that each month for a few months, say 6 months. At the end of the 6 months, start taking the meds. from your kit each month, starting with the oldest dated ones. Meds. are usually good for up to a year, so you don't have to worry about them being bad after 6 months (please check with your pharmacist though to make sure, I'm not a doctor). If you do this, at the end of the 6 months you will have several days of medications to keep you going until you can get more. Keep it going though. Don't take any out without replacing them. I hope this helps.

National Emergency Preparedness Month

September is "National Emergency Preparedness Month." This a good time to evaluate what your needs may be in case of different incidences that may happen in our area; such as earthquake, flood, fire and biological disasters. Do you have enough food and water to sustain you for a 3 day period? Do you have enough food and water set a side to sustain your family in case you weren't allowed to leave your home for an extended period of time, as in the case of a pandemic or other situation?

This Month let's do our families a favor and begin to prepare for disasters we know will come. We have been told that if "we are prepared we will not fear." Let's not think we can depend on others for our welfare. Let's be self-sufficient and make sure our families are ready for the future.
