THE MANTLES

I don't know much about these guys other than they are another awesome band from San Francisco. Fuzzy/Poppy/Psych not too far removed from the Fresh & Onlys and in saying that even slightly similar to The Chills or The Clean. Who cares. I hate the "sounds like" game.Have a listen for yourself. Buy it from MT.ST.MTN.

WHORES

Whores are a three piece shitty noisiey/ garage / punk rock band from Sydney Australia. This was recorded on a four track in their lounge room & was being released on tape sometime in the last 6 months. Last time i saw them play they tore it up in a 10 - 15 minute set as their guitarist was late to the gig and was tripping out of his mind on acid. Awesome.

THE GARBAGE & THE FLOWERS

Coming out of Sonic Youth-drenched Wellington, NZ in the early nineties,now living in Sydney Australia The Garbage & the Flowers were always going to be an anomaly. Denounced as the fifty-thousandth band to sound like the The Velvet Underground, and even as a Christian band in the local street press, the five-piece nevertheless built up a solid gang of devotees, who claimed their sound to be "unique, fractured, and psychedelic" and ideal to take acid with and get stoned to. This is their first single. Amazing!

NECESSARY EVILS

Interplanetary transmissions and the sound of blood lust - get ready for the extreme psychodelic and otherworldly sounds of the Necessary Evils. Their brand of sci-fi inspired fuzz rock stands alone. Founded in 1997 by Steve Pallow (formerly of The Beguiled) and James Arthur (formerly of Fireworks), and rounding out their line up with Kyle John Hall on drums and Jimmy Hole on bass, The Evils have carved a nasty path of destruction over the last few years. Their's is the darkest, sickest, meanest sound around - truly the product of a disturbed psyche. Steve Pallow's voice issues warnings and threats throughout their rock n' roll demolition derby while James Arthur wrangles sounds out of his beat up Electra guitar that range from the sound of metal on metal grinding to that made by a flying saucer. Jimmy and Kyle's rhythm gives one very fat bottom to this ugly beast. With a nod to 60's psychedelic music (see covers of The Seeds, Black Rose, White Light and ineptitude kings The Keggs). A-FRAMES

A Frames is postpunk, noise rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1999. The trio consists of Erin Sullivan, Min Yee and Lars Finberg. The band called itself Bend Sinister before Finberg joined the band.A Frames cites the Cows, Joy Division and Scratch Acid among its influences.A Frames started its own label, Dragnet Records, in January 2000 in order to release music, although the band signed with Sub Pop Records for the release of Black Forest. The band members also play in other acts including The Intelligence, the Dipers and Climax Golden Twins.

this is a "best of" collection. i only know of these freaks because of the songs the oblivians cover. a very,very addictive band but by saying this most people love or hate them. this is not the cover...i just liked this picture better. original cover is with the download!

DEMONS CLAWS

Montreal in the last ten years has undoubtedly been a bastion of rootsy, homemade rock'n roll that moves people in a serious way. There's something about the majority of people who 'get it' vs. those who don't that makes that city such a great breeding ground, and the Demon's Claws are the latest pioneers to make their way out with an intimidating shove. Formed from members of the Scat Rag Boosters and the Cut Offs looking for a way to break down music to it's simplest parts, but without any of the snobby aloofness of post-punk, they hit the nail on the head with a winning formula. And with a range that qualifies them as possessors of real talent, they mangle authentic country cuts right along with their tight, 2-chord tonal tantrums which no bar fight would be complete without. When most people think of guitar twang, devils and deer skulls usually aren't the first images that come to mind, so when you see a group of guys conjuring up that old rockin' black magic sound, it's already got the darkness on it's side, much like the early 80s LA death-punk collective. Like the cold feel of an evil autumn breeze, there's something very antagonistically comforting about the Demon's Claws ability to lure you in their direction, whether it's your intent or not.

COACHWHIPS/TRIN TRAN SPLIT

Two rocking distorted lo-fi garage punkers from San Francisco's COACHWHIPS. Pretty catchy stuff here, the "now sound", short and sweet. One of the tracks is a TRIN TRAN cover. On the flip TRIN TRAN has a bit more new wave, arty feel. Lo-fi and catchy as well. "H.C. She" (the song the COACHWHIPS cover) is irresistably catchy.Awesome!

RAW ROMANCE

This is the followup album from Okimoniks drummer/Sneaky Pinks founder Nobunny.Raw Romance is a lot more acoustic based than love visions but still lo-fi/garage rock with all the hooks. Wasn't too excited whe i first heard this but it sure grows on you!

IMAGINARY FRIENDS

Another one from San Frans Fresh & Onlys. This is their debut release on Kelley Stoltz's Chuffed Records. This was limited to a press of 300 but i think it was going to be repressed. Either way check out Chuffed Records site if you want to buy a copy!

TY SEGALL - CENTS 7"

New 7" on Goner. If you don't know who Ty is you have been living under a rock. Do yourself a favour and grab this. It's awesome. Can't wait for the LP.

COCOCOMA

Whipcrackin' dirty, storming garage rock is the board of fare on this little yellow plate by Chicago's Cococoma, a trio pushing hard on romping, reckless, total sound. For just three people, they kick up a bled-through racket unheard since the heyday of the Estrus pyre in stature and energy, forcing each of the three tracks here to their limits. "All I Give" and "Don't Tempt Me" push the speed limit, while "Premonition" lays in on the mid-tempo grind; all are saturated in a thick haze of guitar noise, organ grind, Childish shouting and gang choruses. They're tight enough to play like they don't give a shit, but come off beyond being just some crummy band with an attitude.

THE FRESH & ONLYS

The Fresh & Onlys began in the spring of 2008 as a recording collaboration between Tim Cohen and Shayde Sartin. After a month of marathon recording sessions on various broken tape machines the two enlisted Wymond Miles, Heidi Alexander and Grace Cooper to help complete the sound. DEAF WISH

From Melbourne,Australia Deaf Wish are a band that seems to get likened to The Wipers & early Husker Du. I guess i can kind of hear it...kind of? Comparisons aside they do know how to play solid R'N'R. This is a CDR released in 2008. Stand out songs for me are 'Mai Tai' and 'Green Flame'.

BRAINBOMBS

There is only one word to describe these swedish maniacs...BRUTAL! Brainbombs have been around since 1985 but i have only discovered them recently. Best listened to very very loud!

GOLDEN TRIANGLE

I don't know much about this band other than they are playing gonerfest this year.Apparently they are from Brooklyn/Atlanta/Austin/Memphis. Must be a nightmare organizing band practice. Psyched out garage rock with dual female vocals. Six tracks and a Redd Kross cover!

LOVE TAN MISCELLANEOUS NIGHT FEELINGS

Love Tan is the duo of Matthew Ford (Factums, ex-Intelligence) and Craig Chambers (The Lights). They used to be called "Pyramids", which is why you may see some of their previous 7" releases alude to that. They changed their name when they stumbled upon the array of bands currently calling themselves Pyramids. Personally, I think Love Tan is a great name. No one else will dare rip that off.Hailing from Seattle, Love Tan display a wide range of haunting, brutal and pop-drenched sounds, which is all the more impressive considering that they are only a two piece. The vocals range from falsetto to baritone, the guitars can sound sparse or punishingly full, and the drumming can go from methodical to off-kilter, and all in the same song. For fans of Tronics, The Prats, The Urinals, etc.

NO BUNNY - GIVE IT TO ME 7"

One of the many personalities of Okmoniks drummer and Sneaky Pinks founder Justin Champlin, Nobunny (with and without the Fabulous Flys) is a tucson-founded, oakland-based, bunny-faced act specializing in 60s-style garage rock and pop. Apparently he really stinks. Great tunes.

Getting away from San Francisco(not for too long!)The Straight Arrows are a band from Sydney Australia who play snotty punk rock'n'roll.These are just a few songs from their myspace the best in my opinion is 'close that door'.Check 'em out!

A sandwitch,is not actually a spelling error meant to say "sandwich", but is actually a Warlock, Witch, Dragon or any other mystical rare creature that are found in certain fables and, of course, extremely hostile. These creatures have the ability to disguise themselves in the form of a sandwich. The fact is that so many people, when hearing another warning them of their impending doom at the hands of a Sandwitch, believe that they are referring to the food, so that as soon as they reach out to get a bite, the Sandwitch would strike! Sandwitches are also a band from San Francisco with 3 girls who play really good folky/psychy/pop!

The Ooga Boogas are an Australian band with members from The Sailors , Eddy Current Suppression Ring and The Onyas. They were one of the highlights at Gonerfest 5 last year.The album is on Australian label Aarght Records and is a gatefold with pink vinyl so you should buy it..... Do i hear PSYCHO CHEERS!

Great French band with a member from The Creteens and Yussuf Jerusalem. This is their second 7". I saw them at Gonerfest last year and they really back it up live. It says on their myspace they are recording soon so hopefully a full length soon!

TEETH MOUNTAIN

With three drummers, a bass/cello player and a guitarist/violinist/samples executor - Teeth Mountain use their driving percussion in layers like some bands use guitars. The outfit’s hypnotic drones, which at times recall the Velvet Underground’s White Light/White Heat, suggest that its members also learned a thing or two from the heady intensity of Crash Worship and the exoticism of Brian Eno’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

Arriere Garde

When you close your eyes and think of blues music, most likely the image that come to mind is of an old southern black man with dark, inset eyes, and wrinkles as deep as scars fretting out his woes in 12 bars with thick yam fingers across the comparatively skinny neck of an old Gibson somewhere down in the Delta. That's a shame. As much of the context has changed over the past over the past eighty years (!), the subject matter has not. Exhibit A: Hue Blanc's Joyless Ones, a band of fretful youths from Algoma, Wisconsin who play weird, disjointed songs that are perfectly dark and alienating, and portray a sense of life's evident draining. Self-loathing is a tiresome and noble profession, and when it's wrung out with such affecting vigor it's impossible to ignore. Hue Blanc does it brilliantly on their new LP, Arriere Garde, out now on S S Records. With their style of stream-of-self-consciousness song writing that pounds out songs that have ripened into a crystallized ooze that reveals even more melancholy textures than their last LP on P. Trash Records. They go from waltzing expressions of mistrusted love in a song called “Bloody Nights at the Hotel Bar' that teeters on a feeling of helplessness, to religious doubt in another song called “The First Deification of the Rest of Your Life” where the vocals spill out in a thick, maniacal, but somehow droning hum that pushes you to the edge of some sort of anxious meltdown. Hue Blanc's ability to interweave these feelings of mounting cold sweats, and disquiet with spiraling, often winding songs that build to perfect folds and leave you with a residual feeling of introspection is truly unique.(from Victim of Time)

HANGIN' ON THE TELEPHONE

The Nerves were a mid-'70s power pop trio based in Los Angeles, California, featuring guitarist Jack Lee, bassist Peter Case, and drummer Paul Collins. All three members composed songs and sang. They managed a national tour, including a few dates with The Ramones, but they lasted just a short time and self-released only one self-titled four-song EP in 1976, featuring the songs "Hanging on the Telephone" (Lee), "When You Find Out" (Case), "Give Me Some Time" (Lee), and "Working Too Hard" (Collins). The EP was distributed by independent Bomp! Records. Peter Case, Paul Collins and Jack Lee are re-releasing The Nerves on vinyl and compact disc through Alive Records in the fall of 2008.Despite their limited lifespan and discography, The Nerves remain notable for many reasons. They were the founding vanguard of the LA pop scene that eventually produced The Knack and The Plimsouls. After The Nerves' break-up, Case and Collins formed The Breakaways with Pat Stengl, a group that would have an even shorter lifespan than The Nerves. Thereafter, however, Case and Collins went on to front more famous groups, The Plimsouls (who had a Billboard Top 100 hit with "A Million Miles Away") and The Beat, respectively. But perhaps the most notable legacy of the group is the song "Hanging on the Telephone": popular group Blondie later covered the song on their smash album Parallel Lines and turned it into a UK top 5 hit, and thanks to Blondie's success, the song has become something of a standard, later re-done by groups as diverse as L7, Def Leppard, Cat Power (whose version was featured in Cingular commercials in 2006), and the band that the character Lane drummed for on the sitcom The Gilmore Girls. While it is likely some of these artists are unaware of the original Nerves version, others were also from Los Angeles and what was, at the time, its terribly small underground music scene and would most certainly be able to reference the original. (According to some sources, Blondie decided to cover the song after a trip to Japan. Someone slipped in a tape of The Nerves in their car's cassette deck and their Japanese driver, who didn't speak a word of English, started tapping along to the song on the steering wheel.) Blondie included a second Lee composition on Parallel Lines, "Will Anything Happen?" Lee also went on to write a hit for Paul Young, "Come Back and Stay"."Hanging on the Telephone" and "When You Find Out" were later released on a 1993 Rhino Records power-pop compilation, DIY: Come Out and Play - American Power Pop I (1975-1978), which Allmusic gave the full five stars (review). The Nerves also had the honor of appearing on the album's cover. More recently, Rhino included an unreleased Nerves track, Case's "One-Way Ticket", on the 2005 compilation Children of Nuggets (AllMusic Review), a sequel to their popular Nuggets compilations. DEBROUX

"During a show with hardcore punks Hatefuck, DeBroux and company traveled to Winona, Minnesota. After a five-hour drive to the town, wasted locals, angry punks and gnarled three-legged dogs greeted them by leading them into a commandeered park. Inside the park, DeBroux found 'the ultimate punk rock experience' with townies huffing rubber glue and mohawk-brandishing kids starting fights with crusties. The show ended and the locals gave the band three dollars for their troubles. A few kids asked DeBroux and company to chip in the three dollars on a keg. Soon, the crowd dispersed and left the band with no money or place to stay. The band wound up sleeping on an island between Minnesota and Wisconsin and breaking up soon thereafter. He wrote the first Pink Reason song, 'Winona,' about this experience.'" --Steve Kobak from Blastitude #25

MY BABY WANTS ME DEAD

The Vivian Girls started in Brooklyn in 2007 as the trio of Cassie Ramone (guitar/vocals), Kickball Katy (bass/drums/vocals) and Frankie Rose (drums/bass/vocals).[1] While only a band for a short while, they recorded a demo cassette / CD-R which included five original songs, and began to play locally in their home town of Brooklyn.Within the first couple of months they had already developed a strong local following, supporting acts like Jay Reatard, Japanther and the King Khan & BBQ Show as well as finding kindred spirits in other locals like caUSE co-MOTION!, Crystal Stilts, and Woods, with whom they’ve shared many bills and helped develop a local scene. In March 2008 they released the "Wild Eyes" single on the Plays With Dolls label.With very little promotion and distribution the single became an underground indie hit as it charted on many college radio playlists and garnered positive reviews on the internet.Recorded in the same session, their debut self-titled LP was released by the Mauled by Tigers label, whose initial pressing of the LP sold out in ten days.During this time, the group signed with In The Red Records who released a new single in August 2008.In The Red re-released the Mauled by Tigers record on LP and CD formats in October 2008.In July 2008 the band underwent a lineup change with new drummer Ali Koehler replacing Frankie Rose.
