Closing Remarks...

Welcome back peeps!

Man, I love the holidays. Hope yours was filled with joy, peace, and blessing!

Around these parts, we had a great week. It was pretty much filled with the following:

1. Eating
2. Watching movies
3. Snacking
4. Opening presents
5. Napping

So fun! Here's a little pic of Tucker looking cute and Christmas-y.

I am in the process of organizing and getting my *life* ready for 2009. Jen and I had dessert and wine last night and we were talking about how life was so different this time last year. Then, we started looking forward to what life will look like on December 28, 2009! Let's just say a baby and a wedding people. A baby and a wedding.

In addition to getting organized, I am asking the Lord for an inheritance word for 2009 and also a word, just one word, for the year. I got the idea for the "one word" from a really cool lady, Ali Edwards. I'm putting a Jesus twist on it, but I think it's such a neat idea. Read about it here.

I'm pretty set on my word for 2009 being "present". I want to be present in every situation. Not being hurried to think about the next thing to do or 23 other things I need to be doing, but pause...and just be. Present. Cool stuff.

I think my inheritance word might be Luke 1:45, "And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord."

Mary and I are running pretty tight these days, no?

I hope each of you has a blessed LAST week of 2008! See ya'll in 2009!

Holiday Eating Tips

I got this forward from a friend and had to post it!!

HOLIDAY EATING TIPS:

  1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.
  2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare. You cannot find it any other time of the year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two.
  3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
  4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
  5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it.
  6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
  7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.
  8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apple and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?
  9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.
  10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read these tips, start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.
Happy Holidays!

30!

Today is my 30th birthday...and I can't believe it!!

I am declaring to all 3 of my readers that this next year will be the best yet!

We're talking TBD, people!

During the holiday season, I am reading The Mary Miracle by Jack Hayford. I am claiming this passage for TBD and for 2009:

"The fountainhead miracle is the Mary miracle, because the fount of redemption - Jesus Himself - came to us through that wonder. But the river is still flowing, and God's Spirit is calling us to move into the stream.

There are promises He wants to bring to you, (concerning arenas of need, hope or longing you are aware of, where God's power and grace are needed);

...which promises He wants to grown in you, (as you receive His Word and entertain the possibility that there is noting too hard for God);

...that He may work His promised wonders through you, (as a humble vessel, submitted to His grace and dependent upon His sufficiency and power);

...in order to change the world around you (be it in your family, your relationships, your neighborhood, city or nation, your church or your circumstance).

And all this takes time...sometimes more than we would like. But then, it took Mary nine months. Or was it thirty years?"

While the 30 years in this text is referring to Jesus' ministry, I am claiming it for me as 30 years! It's time for the miracle!!!

Sowing Seeds

I had an awesome lunch with Monica on Monday and she asked me a very sweet question. She said, "Are you sowing into the promise TBD like Sam and Jen sowed into the promise of a baby by putting together their nursery?"

Let me explain.

With the promise of a baby grasped tightly next to their hearts, Sam and Jen set out to furnish and prepare a nursery for the baby they would bring home someday. It was AWESOME. God gave them their first baby just a few months later! Obviously this is the short version...you simply must read every letter, sentence, and punctuation of that blog.

Anyway, I was so excited to answer YES! to Monica's question. I have been sowing into the promise of a husband and family. While I'm not planning my wedding [just yet], I am making preparations.

Monica said she had a "TBD gift" she wanted to get me. Here they are!!

TBD's luggage tag:

And my luggage tag:

[I'm sorry, but does sista-friend know me, or does sista-friend KNOW ME?!?!]

It's so encouraging to have people walking this path with me and helping me sow into my promise!!! Mon, you're awesome! Thanks for sowing with me!

"Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary." Isaiah 40:31

Dreams Really Do Come True!!

You may recall my previous posts regarding this highly coveted Christmas gift.

The Slanket.

Well, my dreams came true on Friday night when I was presented with an "IOU" from Kristen and Jen for my VERY OWN SLANKET!!!!!!!!!!!

Jealous?

In doing some research for this post, I ran across the website for the Slanket. You must go to it immediately. Here are just a few pictures from their site: [Be sure to click on the picture to enlarge it!]

I love this one! I just picture all of us wrapped up in our Slankets!

Funny! These people are funny! Makes me love it even more.

Please get yourself a Slanket. I haven't received mine yet, but I can't wait to cuddle up with it this winter!

Throwback Thursday

In my defense, this was taken in 1989.

Enjoy this early Christmas gift from me to you!

Faith is...

...the handle by which I take God's promises and apply them to my particular problems.

...remembering I am indispensable to God when I feel I only clutter up the landscape.

...remembering that in the kingdom of God, everything is based on promise, not on feeling.

...expecting God to accomplish miracles through insignificant me, with my five loaves and my two fishes.

...reliance on the certainty that God has a pattern for my life when everything seems meaningless.

...expecting golden grain from the bleak, barren, endless fields - watered only by my tears where I walk alone.

...thanking God when I am left with shattered plans, knowing that He has better plans.

...confidence in God's faithfulness to me in an uncertain world, on an uncharted course, toward an unknown future.

...waiting patiently for God to make me more Christ-like through people and circumstances when I want Him to give me a quick fix - preferably painless.

...trusting that God is doing a work in me when I feel inwardly cold, hollow, lifeless, deserted and I long for reassured feelings.

...not related to my believing hard enough, nor my emotional exhilaration or flatness - but rests on what God guarantees in His word.

Faith is...the way to please God.

The Whole Kit 'N Kaboodle

This year one of the items on my Christmas list is a makeup bag from Sally Spicer. If you haven't been formally introduced to Sally, allow me:

Reader, meet Sally. She makes the cutest bags ever.

Sally, meet my friend who is about to fall in love with your products.

Now that we have introductions out of the way, I can get on to my deep confession. You may be asking yourself, "Self, why would Becky be asking for a makeup case for Christmas?"

Well, since I'm turning 30 in **12 DAYS!** I know there are areas of my life where I need to grow. And by grow, I mean grow UP. [Deep breath]

For YEARS, and I mean, since I was 14, I have been storing my makeup in....

...wait for it...

A Caboodle.

Yep, it's just what you're thinking:

Now, in my defense, I have graduated to this kind:

Sleek and sophisticated, no?

But seriously, ya'll know my organizational ways! You can't beat the dual levels and handy divided tray! Look at it!

Not to mention the items I have in my bathroom drawer. I just want all my stuff in one place, is that too much to ask???

[On a side note, could I possibly have MORE Bare Minerals products???]

Anyway, my Mom and I had a good laugh this morning as I told her my desire for a "big girl" makeup case. Here's hoping, Santa!

My new BFF.

So, it seems I have come down with a little coldy-poo. I always forget about this product, but just slathered some on tonight, so I thought I would sing the praises of an old friend:

Oh, Vicks. How I love thee.

Did you know that zoo keepers in the UK used Vicks to stop meerkats from fighting?

Here's a pic of a sweet little meerkat getting his head and chest freed from congestion, and keeping the peace:

Now...being the good Christian girl I am, I must also send you to a cautionary tale about Vicks.

There is a flip-side to every story!! Proceed with caution.

Throwback Thursday - Friday Edition

Thank you Kristen, for demanding Throwback Thursday! :o)

Here ya go! Christmas in the 80's...gotta love it!

[Are those shoulder pads?]

And honestly, did every little girl have this sweater or a variation of this sweater???

Have a great weekend!

Christmas Tree Tag!

I'm totally stealing this...but no one ever tags me, so I had to take matters into my own hands!!

We're going to play a little game of Christmas tag. Here are the questions:

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?

Wrapping paper. ALWAYS wrapping paper. My Mom would "wrap" every last gift in a bag, but I love the idea of ripping into a beautifully wrapped package! Plus, I really like to wrap!

2
. Real tree or artificial?

Real! Unless you are living by yourself and don't want to a) cut down your own tree or b) maintain it...it's a big job for a single!

3. When do you put up the tree?

If I had my way, I would put up the tree as soon as the Thanksgiving dishes are finished. However, Chazz and Mary usually make me wait until the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

4. When do you take down the tree?

Again, if I had my way, it would be mid-January. I don't like taking anything down until after New Year's day. Then, you start the long, depressing process of putting everything away!

5. Do you like eggnog?

You know, I don't have any memory of ever having a glass...maybe a sip here or there. I have a feeling I wouldn't love it!

6. Favorite gift received as a child?

Piano!

7. Hardest person to buy for?

Chazzle. Hands down. When you ask him what he wants for Christmas, he'll give you awesome ideas like "a Harley" or "the GV-1299583 guitar processor". And when you ask if he has any ideas that are around $50, he gives you a blank stare as if he didn't understand the question.

8. Easiest person to buy for?

My Mom. But that may be because we typically a) buy our own presents b) are with each other when we buy presents or c) give a detailed list.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?

We have one, but we don't have it out this year!

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?

Mail. MAIL. MAIL. Don't ever email a Christmas card!!!

11. Worst Christmas gift ever received:

I can't really think of one! I'm sure it was a tacky clothing item.

12. Favorite Christmas movie?

A Christmas Story. Or White Christmas.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?

After Thanksgiving. But I'm usually shopping for myself rather than people on my list. The deals are too good to pass up!

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?

I'm sure I have...probably a candle or something like that. I think regifting is OK as long as the person you are REgifting won't run into the person who originally gifted it!

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?

Pizzelles!!! They are sooo good!

16. Lights on the tree?

Yes. White ones! I'm not really into colored Christmas lights.

17. Favorite Christmas song?

The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole, Carol of the Bells, O Holy Night

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?

Home!

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?

Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, Rudolph! No Google needed!

20. Open the presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

Christmas morning! However, 3 or 4 years ago I decided that we needed to open one gift on Christmas Eve. I have no idea why...what I DO know it that I'm terrible at waiting!

21. Most annoying thing about this time of year?

The parking lots stealing the joy of the season right out of you! I have resolved myself to parking far away to maintain the holiday spirit!

22. What do you want for Christmas this year?

A slanket!!!

Now, I'm going to tag JEN! So head on over to her blog and see what she has to say!! Or you can drop by to see Max. :o) Truly, if you're reading this, you can consider yourself tagged!

Merry Christmas!!!

Chestnuts Roasting on a Open Fire...Tucker Pulling a Tree?

Happy Sunday peeps!

I hope ya'll had a great Thanksgiving weekend. I definitely had my share of turkey goodness! However, the best part of my weekend was the fact that I didn't drive for 3 days, and spent more than 24 hours in my PJ's. Heaven invading earth!!

Now we are full on Christmas mode. We went and got out Christmas tree on Saturday. This was Tucker's first trip to the Christmas tree farm, and we were pretty excited to see how he would do. After we located our tree and Chazzle cut it down, he decided it would be fun to see if Tucker could drag the tree back to the barn for us. Well, he claims that Tucker was pulling, but I'm not so sure!!

Luckily, I was able to snap a few pictures of the process. Here was my favorite one:

Poor thing. He's a good sport.

I have a really cool blog planned for tomorrow...see you then!!!

Gobble! Gobble!

On this Thanksgiving Eve, I was in search for the perfect sentiment to sum up how I'm feeling this Thanksgiving. Let's face it, I have much to be thankful for. Just to name a few:
  1. I live in a nation where I am free to be the Jesus freak that I am.
  2. I am healthy, have parents who love me, and the best friends a girl could ask for.
  3. I just figured out a new technique for applying my eye makeup that I'm pretty stoked about.
But let's not get carried away...

Anyway, I was Googling for quotes like Kristen Googles - well - anything, and settled on the best sentiment I could find [and where I should have gone first]:

"Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
~ 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Pretty simple, right? God's will is for us to give thanks in all circumstances.

Infuriatingly simple.

The fact is, I'm not in the habit of thanking God in all circumstances. I typically thank Him when things have gone my way, when I'm having a great day, and when I'm totally in sync with Him. I don't recall a time recently when I've thanked Him that TBD isn't around, or that I don't have the ability to go to school debt free, or that I struggle with my flesh. But that's His will. That I'll thank Him for all of it. It's a great reminder this time of year, isn't it?

On that note, I think the first thing I'll do is thank the Lord that my Turkey day doesn't ever look like this:

But usually looks like this:

In all circumstances, right?!?

Throwback Thursday

Don't ya'll care about Throwback Thursday???

Haven't you marked your calendars??

Don't you leap out of bed on Thursday mornings, yelling, "Thank you Lord Jesus for this blessed THROWBACK THURSDAY!!!"?

NOT ONE person said anything to me about missing Throwback Thursday.

This hurts, people. This hurts real bad.

It's not like I'm not giving up some of the best and worst photos of myself.

Have you forgotten this? Or this? Certainly not!!

Because the holiday season is quickly approaching, I will not punish you by withholding Throwback Thursday. Instead, I will wet your appetite for more!

I give you...1991.

Now, let's start showing a little more respect for Throwback Thursday, shall we?

Tweedly Tweedly Tweet!

C'mon! You know you want to Twitter! It's fun!

Twitter is a fun way to keep up with what your friends are doing. Oh yeah, or you could just call and ask "Hey, what are you doing?"

But for those that would prefer to do it Midwest style [aka: non-confrontational] this is a great alternative!

Tweet! Tweet!

Date Night!

So last night I had a date with a younger man.

First, we went to a movie. It was a suspense/thriller and, as you can see, he was on the edge of his seat!!

Next, we went to dinner. The food was pretty good! Mostly fruits and veggies, with a little rice cereal thrown in. I think he might be a vegetarian.

After dinner, we had dazzling conversation. I could have started into his blue eyes all night long!!

Finally, he asked me to his place for a nightcap. So forward!

It was the perfect date! I only hope his Mommy lets him call me sometime!

Holiday Gift Ideas

While perusing the television late one evening, I came upon this incredible gift idea, courtesy of the fine folks at QVC. I think it will take care of those "hard to shop for" people on your holiday gift list.

I give you...the SLANKET.

Yes friends, the Slanket is a 97" x 58" wearable blanket. Apparently the Slanket will keep you warm "even when reaching for the remote or indulging in your favorite snack." Because I normally feel the winter's chill as I reach 2 feet for the remote. And I also get chilled to the bone as I eat popcorn.

Bethany, perhaps this would be a nice compliment to your blips?

I think I just like the idea that people in the retail world are combining two normal words to make one funny word.

Boot + Slippers = Blips.

Shirt + Blanket = Slanket?

So this holiday season, forget the traditional Chia pet gift and get a Slanket!!!

P.S. Ever since I saw the Slanket on QVC, I see it almost every time I flip past it! Try to tune in and hear the pitch!

Quirks & Pet Peeves

There is a super fun party game out there cleverly titled, "Quirks & Pet Peeves". As you might imagine, each person lists one of their quirks on a piece of paper [no names], then all the papers are collected and read, and the group tries to guess which quirk belongs to which person. The next round everyone lists a pet peeve.

We played this game last night, and this afternoon I was reminded of another one of my quirks. When I receive a magazine in the mail, I always tear out all the fragrance ads, cardstock cards, subscription postcards, etc. BEFORE I begin reading. Weird and quirky, party of one?

I snapped this photo of my "tear out" pile to put the last nail in my coffin of insanity:

Confession time! What are YOUR quirks and pet peeves??

Throwback Thursday-Slacker Friday Edition...with Bonus!

Sorry about forgetting yesterday's throwback. I'm sure you were on the edge of your seats, unable to get anything accomplished, just waiting for my post!

To make it all better, I have decided to give you TWO throwback photos. That's right, I'm that generous.

In honor of Erin's sweet posting on her Nanny, I found this cute photo of my Granny and I, circa 1989. Side ponytail? Check. Slammin' red shoes? Check. Please note that this photo was taken in June, the temperature in Oklahoma was probably 112 degrees, and I promise you my grandmother has nylons on. Love it!!

This next photo, there is really not much to say about. I'm just hanging out at my grandparent's house on Christmas, wearing my new cow slippers...while wearing "beans" [black jeans].

Seriously, what was I thinking???

29 Things About Lil' Jenger

Today is Jen's 29th Birthday!!!

In honor of her birthday, I want to tell you 29 things about Jen that I absolutely LOVE.

  1. Jen is cheaper than a therapist. She is a great listener, but more importantly she sometimes serves wine at her therapy appointments.
  2. She loves the Lord with all her heart, mind, soul, and strength.
  3. She experienced God's redeeming power at age 16, and will continue to use that experience to bring glory to the kingdom.
  4. She judges God faithful, and has taught me to do the same.
  5. She can tell my voice when I call her. I don't have to say, "It's Becky."
  6. She sends me encouragement just when I need it.
  7. She likes to cruise through the stores to see what the new colors are for that season.
  8. She allowed me to take this picture in New York City:
  9. She got offended at spending $50 for lunch at TGI Friday's in New York City, but didn't bat an eye spending that at the NBC Store buying Olympic-wear for her and Sam for the Torino games.
  10. She hunts for TBD for me, but says no one is good enough for me.
  11. She won't allow me to even ENTERTAIN the idea of lowering my standards, not even for a minute.
  12. She knows a lot about wine, and doesn't judge me when I can't tell if a wine tastes "woodsy" or "fruity".
  13. She is my person.
  14. She never gave up on God's promise to give her and Sam a family.
  15. She once took me on a "leisurely walk" in Chicago, which amounted to what felt like a mini-marathon.
  16. She gives awesome advice on all aspects of life. Sometimes in the same sentence.
  17. She welcomes our wild group of friends into her home and truly lets it feel like our house too.
  18. She can decipher my tone over email.
  19. She loves Rascal Flatts as much as I do.
  20. Jen once left a plastic water bottle on an airplane--and went back for it. [For the record, we had NOT just landed in a developing nation...I believe it was New York City.]
  21. She waited for a baby with more grace and dignity than I ever could have.
  22. She will save episodes of "Big Brother" so we can watch them together.
  23. She is generous with her time. [Or is it "Jenerous"?]
  24. She eats organic peanut butter and is OK with the fact that I just can't do it.
  25. She is an incredible wife to Sam.
  26. She has blessed me by allowing me to be one of Max's Aunts.
  27. She knows the value of spending an evening on the porch.
  28. She was my friend in the waiting room--an incredible gift from God that I can't even begin to describe here.
  29. She is an awesome travel companion.
Jen, we finally have more in common than both liking Sheryl Crow!!

So there you have it. The 29 reasons why I love Jen. Happy Birthday, sweet friend. I feel so blessed to have you in my life!!! Love you!

I give you...Throwback Thursday.

Blast!

Harry Connick Jr. just released ANOTHER Christmas album!

Look for spare change in your car's ashtray and purchase immediately.

And if you don't have this one or this one, you need to buy those too! Seriously, this guy is the best when it comes to Christmas music. He's like the Santa of Christmas.

Enjoy!

Obsessed

As many of my friends can attest, I am reading [and frequently quoting] a book called, "Crazy Love-Overwhelmed by a Relentless God" by Frances Chan.

My friends are probably rejoicing in their hearts that I am almost finished with this book. I think they are hoping I'll stop talking about it!

Not likely!

The chapter I have been reading for the past few days is called "Profile of the Obsessed". Are you obsessed with Jesus? The Bible? I know I'm not. I'll say I'm obsessed with getting a pair of shoes. Or watching Big Brother. But not Jesus. The past week or so I have been really convicted by the Holy Spirit regarding my priorities and where my obsession lies.

Here are a few excerpts from Crazy Love about people obsessed with Jesus:

People who are obsessed with Jesus give freely and openly, without censure. Obsessed people love those who hate them and who can never love them back.

Obsessed people are more concerned with obeying God than doing what is expected or fulfilling the status quo. A person who is obsessed with Jesus will do things that don't always make sense in terms of success or wealth on this earth.

A person who is obsessed with Jesus knows that the sin of pride is always a battle. Obsessed people know that you can never be "humble enough", and so they seek to make themselves less known and Christ more known.

People who are obsessed with God are known as givers, not takers.

A person who is obsessed thinks about heaven frequently. Obsessed people orient their lives around eternity; they are not fixed only on what is here in front of them.

These are just a few of the characteristics of the obsessed, but don't you find this compelling?

Since I have talked about this book for so long, I have decided to do a giveaway! I will give away one copy of "Crazy Love" to a lucky individual! All you have to do is leave me a comment on this post by TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11th, and I will draw a winner!

Now go out there and get obsessed with Jesus!

One more item...

Don't forget to VOTE tomorrow!!! I am hoping to take pictures while Chazzle and I wait in line tomorrow. Will those crazy poll workers let me do that?!?

Anyway, VOTE, VOTE, VOTE! Diddy said it best:

I don't really know that he means by "die", but I have always felt that threats of violence and death are effective motivational tools.

Regardless, go vote. And don't forget to push those chads all the way through, people of Florida!

I'm back!!!

Ah, life is good. After an incredible few days away, I am feeling restored to my happy, filled-with-God's-goodness-self.

Voice of the Apostles was A.MA.ZING. One of those weeks where you feel totally challenged, but in a good way. You get a fresh taste of "divine dissatisfaction" and want to press in to what God has for you. Thankfully, it's a lot, and He never runs dry!

I have to share this story about our trip. During one of the morning sessions I offered to watch Max so that Jen could sit through a full session, giving it her full attention. I was really looking forward to hanging out with my little buddy. The conference was held at a HUGE church, and we ended up in the "Nursing Mothers Room" where I could feed him [clarification: BOTTLE FEED] and change him. It was a really nice, quiet room with one exception: the conference planners stuck a man on a computer in the Nursing Mom's room.

Pardon?

That's right. A man was working on video editing in the Nursing Mom's room. I was not having it. So...I went to the information desk to express my thoughts on the subject...in Christian love, of course! Anyway, I explained to this "nice" man why having a man in a room designated for nursing Moms was totally inappropriate and I was met with a blank stare and a remark that I can only describe as "snotty". Clearly he didn't find this as offensive as I did. Anyway, I left feeling annoyed and yet a champion for nursing Mom's everywhere!

My only victory was seeing a sign the next day that said, "RESERVED FOR MEDIA". That's right buddy. Don't mess with me!

I also had really high aspirations for taking lots of fun pictures this weekend, but this is the only one I ended up with:

Can you believe those baby blues???

Also, please check back on Thursday for the much anticipated return of "Throwback Thursday". Once again, my Mom came through and found some priceless photos of me. It should get your weekend started on the right foot.

Have a great week everyone!

When someone REALLY knows you...

Tomorrow I am leaving for the Voice of the Apostles conference with Jen, Bethany, and Mary. And sweet little Max is coming too!!

I asked my Dad this morning if he wouldn't mind getting out a suitcase for me. I caught myself, saying that perhaps I needed "a few options"...remembering that he typically packs for a week in this teeny bag:

Now we all know that I have issues packing. My awesome, amazing Dad clearly knows it too. Here's what I found in the basement when I went down to check out my "options".

Is that not the funniest thing?

* 2 duffle bags
* 4 suitcases of varying sizes
* 1 hanging bag
* 2 other bags

I mean, he REALLY KNOWS ME! Ahh...feels good to know that I can just be who I am, and take 5 pairs of shoes for a 4 day trip...three sweaters, a slew of jewelry, and whatever else I can fit!

***UPDATE: Yep, I went with the big one. Never bet against the big one!***

Update?

So, Monica said to me tonight, "You need to update your blog." Apparently, I have had a VERY non-blog worthy week or so. I couldn't even find a Throwback Thursday picture!

Am I slowly unraveling?

I just had to change my blog back to the original layout that I had. I looked at the pink and almost barfed. I'll have to find something new.

See how this is a non-update, update?

I had a dream last night that I was a member of Danity Kane, yes, of MTV's "Making the Band" 1, 2, 3 and 4. My understanding is that two of the girls were kicked out of the group, so perhaps that dream was prophetic? Anyway, we all know I have a small love of DK.

Although if you have ever watched the show when the choreographer, Laurie Ann, was on...I'm not sure I could take all of her "BOOM, KACK!" "BOOM, KACK, KACK!"

I tried to find a good video of Laurie Ann unleashing her choreographer fury, but couldn't find anything blog worthy.

Let's see....what else do ya'll want to hear about?!?

Here's a question...where is everyone finding all these cute shoes these days? Seriously, I have seen so many cute shoes around...but they never seem to be on my feet!!

I am in hot pursuit of a pair of shoes like these that don't cost $108. If you see them, please call me immediately!

Ok, I won't make any of you suffer a moment longer with my rambling. :o)

Nighty nite!

Sleep-Away Camp

I think everyone who reads this blog is pretty familiar with Kristen.  Four kids, loves to be in charge of the Children's Ministry [or is in desperate need of a break], curly hair, cute shoes, will always have a glass of wine with you, Kristen?

Last week her poor Mac got the sickies thanks to her sweet little girl Lauren and had to go the Apple Store.

When I read her entry, I could totally relate to the hollow void of emptiness she felt.  After all, a girl has to blog, doesn't she?  But secretly I was so happy that it wasn't me.

Until today.

My sweet MacBook had to sleep over at the Apple Store.  I'm a mess.

And yes, I did ask if they gave out loaners [Good idea, K!], and the poor man at the Genius Bar gave an odd sort of look.  Clearly they aren't as Genius as previously thought.

I am currently using a PC and want to hurt myself and write and apology note to Steve Jobs.

I like to think my MacBook is at sleep-away camp, making friends with the other Macs, trading stories, doing crafts, etc.

I will pick her up tomorrow where I hope she'll tell me how much she missed me and present me with a yarn God's eye.

Until tomorrow, sweet MacBook, until tomorrow.

Throwback Thursday-Fall Edition

Well, it's Friday. And I'm just getting to Throwback Thursday. This is just a small example of how life gets busy and things like showers and Throwback Thursday sometimes go by the wayside.

This Thursday I thought I would do something a little different. Don't worry, there will still be a throwback, just not quite as far as this, or this, or this.

I really hope you have been enjoying the awesome fall colors this month. We serve an awesome God, don't we? He has created this beautiful earth for us to enjoy! He created plants and trees that all change at different times to different colors, for our pleasure!

Last weekend I was dog sitting and took a walk in a nearby park. I couldn't resist taking my camera and snapping a few shots of the fall colors.

After I finished my walk in the park, I just HAD to visit Whole Foods and take a picture of the mass amount of pumpkins they have outside...so beautiful!

In addition to beautiful fall colors, this month also means it is time to bust out those Halloween costumes! As a graduate of Ohio University, I am very well versed in the celebration of Halloween. If you need a little background on the Halloween celebrations at OU, please look no further. [If you watch the YouTube video, beware of Waldo's f-bomb.]

This week's throwback is a photo of my junior year when two of my friends and I went as bees. Please note that my friend Erin has black stripes on her shirt because she was the Queen Bee.

While most girls went for the "naughty nurse" or some other related costume, my girls and I went for comfort. I mean we were wearing sweatshirts, black pants, and tennis shoes. We weren't messing around when it came to comfort.

I can't make any promises, but I'm going to see if I can find another Halloween costume from years past for next week's throwback. It involves me dressing up as a bag of M&M's. Hope you can handle the suspense.

Happy Fall, ya'll!

New Creation, Indeed!

I found this super sweet video today and had to share it. We serve an awesome God...one that truly sees us as new creations!! Thank you Jesus!

Our blogs...from a man's perspective.

My friend Erin is married to Nic, who is not only a firefighter, he's ALSO a comedian!

Here is the comment he left me yesterday when he hijacked Erin's good name:

"Let me just say that this is Nic in sheeps clothing. Erin didn't close the tabs out when she left this morning to go to work. I Unknowingly stumbled into the parrallel universe that is the female blog. I fully planned on checking my fantasy football team and I get blindsided by this. I'm feeling lightheaded my fingertips are tingling and I can feel my estrogen levels rising. Whatever levels you measure estrogen with. i have seen the other side. I need to go cleanse my spirit by working out with heavy weights, Shooting guns, Doing yard work, Ignoring my emotions and suppressing my desire to feel pretty all of the sudden. I hope I haven't offended anyone. Wait I'm not supposed to care about the feelings of others. Does anyone else hear Wind beneath my Wings? I got to get out of here....."

Classic man! Erin, you are one lucky lady.

Am I being Punk'd???

Ok, seriously, am I?

Some of you may recall a brief stint I had with internet dating.  Please hear me when I say that I know it has worked for lots and lots of people.  One of my friends from college met her husband online.

I think it's just me.

So, over a year ago I met this guy online and he was awesome.  Well, we had great conversation.  Let's just say we were unequally yoked.  Yes, he was a believer, but I think we were in different places in our walks.

Basically, he thought I was a Jesus freak.  :o)  Which I found amusing.

Long story short, this guy was at a crossroads and we lost contact for about 2 weeks.  When I finally heard from him [via email], he seemed to be emerging from his "issues" and was really excited to tell me about them.

I was feeling encouraged,  I was thinking, "Wow, he's really getting it together.  This is great!"

Slow it down, sister.

He then proceeds to tell me [remember, over email] that he had started dating an old friend and was basically giving me the brush off.  Awesome.  Generously, he hoped we could still be friends.  [Please note sarcasm.]  I responded that a girl, ANY girl, deserves better than the email brush off.  Best of luck, BUH-BYE.

Flash forward to tonight.  This clown has tracked me down on Facebook.  WHAT?  Seriously dude, I don't want to be your friend that bad.

Now, I don't really know Facebook etiquette, so I accepted his friend request.  I'm thinking, maybe he will just leave me an annoying message and that will be it.

Cue Aston and the "Punk'd" crew.

No, he starts TALKING TO ME on Facebook.  He's making conversation like it was October 2007.  Pardon?  So strange.

TBD...hurry the heck up so I can be DONE WITH THIS MESS!

Throwback Thursday

Dad-gummit, why is it Throwback Thursday every time I turn around?!?

Can you people not get enough of my terrible pictures?

Didn't think so.

This week's pic comes from 1997. Ah, Senior year of High School. What a magical time. Graduation, college applications, and the right of passage known as Senior Pictures.

We were talking about Senior pictures today in staff meeting, and I described the photo below. I thought I would grace ya'll with my trip to the farm.

It looks like I just stumbled on this barrel and thought I'd shake it off with a cool pose. Now, what you may or may not know is that rarely in "real life" will you ever see me on a farm, or in a barn. This makes the picture all the more priceless. Happy Thursday ya'll....yee-haw!

Take it From a Girl Who Knows...

You know, it's good to have a friend who is on the other side of a mountain of "promise". Like a coach, a cheerleader, and a foothold. It's good.

Girlfriend will not stop.

Here is a poem she directed me to this week. If you're waiting for something, be sure to get some tissues.

"Wait"

Desperately, helplessly, longingly, I cried

Quietly, patiently, lovingly, he replied

I pled and I wept for a clue to my fate

The Master said gently, "Child, you must wait."

"WAIT!," you say, "Wait!," my indignant reply

"Lord, I need answers, I need to know why!

Is your hand shortened, or have you not heard?

By faith I have asked and I'm claiming your word!

My future and all to which I relate

Hangs in the balance and you tell me, 'Wait?'

I am needing a 'Yes' or a 'Go ahead' sign

Or even a 'No' to which I could resign.

And Lord, you have promised that if we believe

We need but to ask and we shall receive.

And Lord, I've been asking, and this is my cry,

I am weary of asking, I need a reply!"

And quietly, softly, I learned of my fate

As my Master replied once again, "You must wait."

He seemed then to kneel and His eyes met with mine

And He tenderly said, "I could give you a sign...

I could shake the heavens and darken the sun,

I could raise the dead and cause the mountains to run,

All you seek I could give and pleased you would be

You would have what you want... But you wouldn't know Me.

You'd not know the depth of my love for each saint

You'd not know the power I give to the faint

You'd not learn to see through the clouds of despair

You'd not learn to trust just by knowing I'm there

You'd not know the joy of just resting in Me

When darkness and silence is all you can see

You'd never experience that fullness of love

As the peace of My spirit descends like a dove.

You'd know that I give and I save for a start

But you'd not know the depth and beat of My heart

The glow of My comfort late in the night

The faith that I give when you walk without sight

The depth that's beyond getting just what you ask

An infinite God who makes what you have last.

And you never would know Should your pain quickly flee

What it means that, My grace is sufficient for thee!

Yes, your dreams for that loved one O're night would come true

But the loss, if you lost what I'm doing in you.

So be silent, my child, and in time you will see

That the greatest of gifts is to get to know Me.

And how often may My answers seem terribly late

My most precious answer of all is still, 'WAIT!'"

Slap me in the face, good.

It's Time!!!!

For the Record...

I'm sure some of you missed last night's show, "17 Children and Counting" on TLC.

Confession...I am intrigued by the Duggar family. And I know of at least one reader [who shall remain nameless, but you know who you are] that shares my feelings.

Check out their website.

So last night's episodes detailed the engagement of the Duggar's oldest son, Josh, to Anna. Overall, it was really sweet and touching...I mean, who doesn't love an engagement story with a happy ending?

HOWEVER, there were a few items of note that I feel like I need to address. I have a feeling that a few of you may be asked, hopefully in the near future, about planning the AWESOMEST. PROPOSAL. EVER. Seeing how Josh & Anna's proposal went down makes me feel like I need to be clear on just a few things. Let's begin.
  1. Asking the girl's father for her hand in marriage - YES.
  2. Proposing at a restaurant with the name "Gator" in it - NO.
  3. Praying about your relationship - YES.
  4. Proposing at a restaurant with alligators dressed as humans - NO.
  5. Delivery man pushing a dolly entering the engagement scene - NO.
  6. Awkward side hug after she says "YES" because you won't kiss until you're married - NO. NO. Ok, one more...NO.
  7. Man wearing jorts [jean shorts] and a wifebeater at the table next to you - NO.
Are we clear? Good. Now, let's move on.

The next episode was on Duggar dating rituals which basically included NO dating and always having a chaperone around because, as little Jessa put it, "Being on your own, bad things can happen." So basically this left poor Josh and Anna clinging to each other's hands because that was the only thing they were going to do during their courtship.

Much to my surprise there is a rouge Duggar! Cousin Amy came by to congratulate Josh and Anna. She was wearing JEANS. She had SHORT HAIR. Scandal!!! She was HI-LARIOUS. I believe I can best sum up her personality in the following quote:

"If Josh wants to get married...let 'em have it."

Oh cousin Amy, how I've longed for you.

Anywho, let's all keep these things in mind when the time comes, k?

The Calendar

I was planning to post this yesterday, but I thought with all the Throwback Thursday excitement, I wouldn't want to take away from all the fun.

I think I may have mentioned this before, but I have this daily tear off calendar that my Mom bought me for Christmas last year. I will free my Mom from any responsibility, as I asked for this calendar. It's a daily tidbit of "encouragement" from Joyce Meyer. Now, I say "encouragement" loosely, mostly because I typically have one of the following reactions to each day's comment:

  1. Slap-You-In-The-Face-Good
  2. "Hmmm....lame"
  3. "I have no idea what's she's talking about"
  4. "Dang...that was kind of harsh"
  5. Slap-Joyce-In-The-Face-Annoying
The following quote I'm about to share with you is from yesterday and falls into the #5 category. Judge for yourself:

"The Bible says that if we have hope, then we will wait on God with an attitude of patience and composure. In other words, while we're waiting on God, we're not going to be frustrated and upset. We're not going to be frantic and fearful...We're just going to say, 'I see it in my heart even though I don't see it in the natural yet. God will bring it at the right time.' We wait for it with patience and composure if we have hope."

Seriously Joyce? Clearly Joyce hasn't had to wait very long for anything. Thank goodness no one has asked me to do a daily calendar because it would be a Jekyll and Hyde scenario, and what I was REALLY thinking yesterday when I ready this. Here's what my calendar would look like:

"The Bible says that if we have hope, then we will wait on God with an attitude of patience and composure. [But let's get serious, sometimes we just want to lay in the fetal position and cry 'till it hurts and our eyes are puffy and red.] In other words, while we're waiting on God, we're not going to be frustrated and upset. [Ok, maybe we will get frustrated and upset at times, but that's OK too. God knows we're doing our best.] We're not going to be frantic and fearful [lie]...We're just going to say [on a good day], 'I see it in my heart even though I don't see it in the natural yet. God will bring it at the right time.' We wait for it with patience and composure if we have hope [most of the time]."

Now, I can respect the fact that there is something about yesterday's calendar that I found so annoying...I must have needed it. Perhaps I'm just in a cynical part of my waiting period. But waiting isn't always pretty and hopeful. It's dark, scary, and ugly. BUT, the great thing is...and what I wish Joyce would have said, is that I don't always have to put on a "brave face" for God. I don't feel like I have to keep my chin up every day. I'm OK with having days when I have to rest on His grace and mercy because I can't muster one positive idea about waiting. His grace covers all my emotions...even the ugly "I'm tired of waiting ones".

Put THAT on a calendar. :o)

Throwback Thursday

Hold on to your hats, people. This week's throwback is a DOOZIE.

Credit goes to my Mom for finding this and telling me when I got home on Monday "I found a picture for your blog. It involves argyle socks."

Uh, oh. That can't be good.

Or can it?

I don't even know what to say. I'll let ya'll take the first hit...

The End of an Era

I have some sad news to report. My faithful journal, is full. Sadly, I have to start the hunt for a journal that will fill it's place. This is sad because I started this journal on 7/12/07...over a year ago!

The only good thing is that it has given me the chance to pause, flip through, and see how FAITHFUL God has been to me and the people around me over the past year. Check this out:

Answered Prayers:
  • My friend Amie, brought home her little girl Hannah from China.
  • Jed passed his CPA exam
  • Bethany's brother-in-law was diagnosed, treated, and cured of cancer
  • Monica was able to quit working and stay at home with Isabel
  • Ron & Kristen increased their faith and business
  • Joy had baby Lucy!
  • Jeff and Amie decided to adopt another baby
  • Two Words: Baby Max
So many others that can't be named...but God is so faithful in all His ways and in ALL His promises!

Suddenly I'm singing that song from "Rent": "How do you measure a year?"

I can only hope that my next journal is filled with MORE revelation and MORE answered prayers!

Throwback Thursday - Friday Edition

Once again, Throwback Thursday is falling on Friday. What can I say? I'm a busy girl.

Anyway, I thought with all this preparation talk, it might be fun to show ya'll the best role models for marriage that a girl could ever ask for.

Yup, that's Chazz and Mary on March 22, 1974. They will be celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary in March! They are my flippin' sweet parents. [And yes, Chazz is wearing a crushed velvet jacket. Classy!]

Anyway, they have been a blessing to me, and I hope that someday TBD and I will share the same kind of friendship, committment, and love that they do!

Slap You in the Face Good

Have you ever come across something that is so good you feel like it's slapping you in the face? Recently I bought a pair of green flats at DSW on sale that I felt were "Slap You in the Face" good.

But that's not the kind of good I'm talking about today.

Let me put it another way. My girls and I once said that worship had "rocked us to the core". It was that good.

Get the drift?

Anyway, after my last blog, my friend Jen wrote this quote in her comment to me... it was "Slap You in the Face" "Rocked us to the core" good.

"Father God, you are risking more than we if Your promises are not kept. True, our souls are at stake, but You stand to lose your character."

Slap. Me. In. The. Face. Good.

And then, as if she couldn't be stopped, this came this morning:

Romans 4:20-21, "He [Abraham] did not waiver at the promise of God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He would also be able to perform."

Rocked. Us. To. The. Core.

Now, I'll be honest. My sweet, dear friend has gotten her promise...thank you JESUS! So I had to remind myself that she's looking at promise from a whole new angle that I am. And that's a good thing. I need people with fulfilled promised to keep me pressing on towards my promise.

So thanks, friend. I love ya.

Preparation

Tomorrow is the big day...I move back with Chazz & Mary. It's funny...I'm having no emotions as I pack, but every time I take a picture off the wall, THAT makes me want to cry.

There is something so important about my experience living by myself. I learned more about who I am as a person than I ever imagined. It is a unique experience that not many people ever have. But I did it, for almost 4 years. There were times when the silence was a gift, and other times it was deafening. It was scary, and it was wonderful!

But tomorrow is a new day. A BIG new day. I feel like there is a new season beginning, and that is really exciting to me. I have never felt closer to God's promises than I do today. I have heard from more than one person that this is a time of preparation for TBD. 'Cause I'm that kind of girl, I had to look it up:

Prepare: to put in proper condition or readiness, to make ready beforehand for a specific purpose.

Oooh, I love that. Naturally, I had to see what the Word said about preparation. Mostly it seems to be in the context of preparing food, or preparing the tabernacle, etc. But I found this verse that jumped out at me:

Isaiah 40:3 "A voice of one calling: 'In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God'."

Oh baby, I am making a highway in my wilderness of waiting for God to move MIGHTILY! If that means that my Mama is going to tuck me in at night, so be it!

Prepare me Lord! Try my heart and teach me YOUR ways during this time of divine preparation for the man you have for me. [And do it quick!]

A Sign of Things to Come...

So tonight I decided to start packing something "easy".

Like the pantry. Easy, yes? Nothing requiring a cooler, just a few Whole Foods bags and we're good to go.

Yeah, right.

Let me explain to you what happens after almost 4 years of loving hot tea.

This happens.

What you are looking at is SIXTEEN boxes and 8 loose packets of tea. Now, in my defense, you'll notice that there are two boxes of "Mandarin Orange Spice". One of the boxes was getting low, so I needed a new box.

So, technically there are only 15 boxes. And that puts me just under the level of "crazy". Whew, another close call.

I decided to call Mom and ask her if it was a problem that I have 16 boxes of tea. After a long pause, she replies:

"Yes."

Hmm...not the response I was hoping for.

My Dad wanted to know if the British knew that I have all of their tea.

I responded that they should be applauding me.

All I can say is the packing is going to get interesting if we're out of the gates with 16 boxes of tea.

Heaven help me.

Dang it Ike, I thought we were friends!

I’m sure ya’ll are on the edge of your seats wondering what I did tonight as Ike passed through. Don’t worry, I took pictures.

The first thing I did when the power went out was become extremely annoyed that 1) no A/C and 2) no internet. I decided that I would read a book which lasted about 3.5 seconds. I then decided to clean out my closet, which was extremely productive. I took a very critical eye that would rival Tim Gunn’s. I ended up with three very large bags to donate, which I’m really pleased with. I found a few gems it the group that I thought I would share with you:

Allow me to introduce you to the most.comfortable.pants.EVER.

You may be asking, why are these pants so large? Well, my friend, these are the best pants ever. They only touch at the hips, and are flowy and comfortable. Non-binding if you will. And yes, those are thousands of tiny hearts in varying shades of red and pink. I got these in college and sent them to their final resting place today. I’m sad to see them go, but I don’t think anyone will want to marry me knowing I will wear these for the better part of the fall and winter.

The next item is a sweatshirt from my freshman year in college. It’s perfect, big, and broken in just right. Typically I wear this sweatshirt with the pants above. Let me remind you there are lots of perks to living by yourself!!!

The final item of note is a cute outfit that I actually wore a few times and really liked. I blessed someone else with it today, but wanted to note one special thing:

Yep, it’s from Fashion Bug. Classic.

So anyway, after organizing my closet and deciding Monica and I shouldn’t go to a movie in the nasty Ike weather, I was extremely bored by myself. I packed a bag and drove to my parents only to be greeted by this:

And this:

Oh, Ike. You dirty dog.
