This LP offers up a decent mix of acoustic singer/songwriter material ("So Easy", "Where He Cried Last Night" and the pretty ballad "Paula's Song") with an occasional nod to more rock oriented numbers ("Gospel"). While Finley turned in a couple of nice guitar licks (check out "Monster"), the set's most interesting feature is probably Finley's voice. It took a couple of spins before we could place the resemblance, but then it struck us. Finley has a kind of nasally/echo clad delivery that sounds like "Walls and Bridges" era John Lennon. Nothing monumental, but certainly worth a couple of spins and better than a lot of the higher priced rarities being hyped by so many dealers. Yes, check this one out. It's a fairly obscure entry in the underground sounds arena. You'll hear this described as killer folk rock (it is) with lost, atmospheric vocals (huh?), amazing, soaring, backing vocal harmonies (they're there), with facile acoustic/electric mix (check) and overall dark, spooky vibe that'll run chills up and down your spine (nah!). I'll describe it as soft, dreamy, psych influenced folk rock. A recent analogy to a friend was: like "Imagine" era John Lennon singing vocals for Kaleidoscope (UK) with material written by Syd Barrett. This is a very subtle album, that doesn't get your full attention first time around. But after a second listen, you really pick up on all the hidden surprises. "Sat. Morning Monster" is my fave, but there are plenty of other winners on tap. The original vinyl is rare, and I'm not sure if it's been reissued on CD, but however you prefer, it's worth seeking out.
   Addendum: The more I hear this the more I like it. It just grows and grows on you. Since this is not normally the type of record I get excited about, the fact that I am excited about it means that much more. It really is a great record! Grades - 2 B+'s, 2 B's, 3 B-'s, and a C+.

Here's a real buried treasure that has never really had much in the way of florid hype.A real deep trip that has more in common with something like D.R. Hooker, than the burgeoning proliferation of singer-songwriters from the period.Might some close attention before you sit back and shake your head in wonderment.

A true gem!

When you find an LP like this it makes all of those countless hours of searching and listening to obscure albums worth the time and effort. This is an outstanding psych rock record with some serious depth and beautiful Billy Nicholls-like vocals. A bit of a headscratcher as to why it was overlooked all of these years when the truth of the matter is that it blows half of the records in the Acid Archives out of the water.

Okay, we bought this one without any idea who Emmett Finley was.  Why?  Well, we recognized the Poison Ring label as a Connecticut-based outfit that released some interesting 1960s efforts including an album by Pulse.

Farm was a late '60s band from Southern Illinois, whose bluesy, country rock style was very similar of that of The Allman Brothers, and Canned Heat. In fact, Farm did an excellent version of the The Allman Brothers' "Statesboro Blues", which is featured on their first and only album, and opened for some big name acts of the day such as Canned Heat. Farm so impressed Canned Heat's  manager at the time, he offered to represent them, but the band turned him down.
Sadly, Farm disbanded about a year after their debut album was released.

Recorded at Golden Voice Recording Studios in South Pekin, Illinois and released on a small record label from Flora, Illinois, this Farm released a very obscure and rare album of heavy garage psych with fuzz guitars, congas, mouth harp, organ, bottleneck and timbales. The album contains five tracks including Jungle Song, Let That Boy Boogie and Sunshine In My Window.
They thank a certain George Leeman as their friend and spiritual guide.

The line up consisted of bassist Jim Elwyn, percussionist Steve Evanchik, singer/guitarist Gary Gordon, keyboard player  Roger Greenwalt, guitarist Del Herbert and drummer Mike Young.  I also know that their 1971 debut "Farm" was recorded at Golden Voice Studios in South Perkin, Illinois and was limited to a 500 copy pressing.  Featuring largely original material, the set's fairly varied.  The opening instrumental 'Jungle Song' and 'Sunshine In My Window' are both strong guitar-propelled numbers that sound heavily influenced by both The Allman Brothers and Santana.  Elsewhere, 'Cottonfield Woman' was a nice slice of blues-rock, while as you'd probably expect from the title 'Let the Boy Boogie' and a cover of 'Statesboro Blues' were okay slices of boogie.

A good album in English by an Italian-French artist. "South" was recorded in London Trident Studio with French and British musicians, all of the other song in Rueil (near Paris) with the group Gee and others. "Le Sud" is the French adaption of "South", and it has become a big hit in France, frequently heard on radios even now. Most of the album has a blues and progressive feeling, and a relaxed tone.

Taking into account Nino Ferrer's personal view of his discography, the album Nino and Radiah should be perceived as his third album (although chronologically this was in fact number seven). It followed the prog rock approach of 1971's Métronomie and the rock & roll leanings of the Mickey Finn collaboration Nino Ferrer & Leggs from 1973. The album is partly named after Afro-American singer Radiah Frye, and her pinup presence flanking Ferrer substantially upgraded the original album cover. Accompanied by the Lafayette Afro Rock Band (aka Ice), Ferrer set out on yet another shape-shifting exercise. Building on the groovy vibe of Métronomie, the album ultimately steers toward majestically orchestrated, laid-back funk. Entirely different from his earlier take on Southern soul, the result requires several listenings before it gently entangles your subconscious and reveals its addictive qualities. Reminiscent of the New Orleans-inspired funk of Little Feat and California singer/songwriters from the same era, it's perfect company for driving the French countryside or West Coast highways. It was recorded in November 1973 and sung in English with one exception. Ferrer's longtime accomplice Bernard Estardy rearranged the track "South," adding some widescreen organ touches. The resulting "Le Sud" had huge commercial appeal, much to the chagrin of Ferrer: he felt the artistic compromise of aiming at chart success had rendered everything else on the album pointless in a similar way to what had happened previously to Métronomie and its leadoff track, "La Maison Près de la Fontaine." However, the royalties did enable him to buy a 15th century fortress in the Quercy region, where he would retreat between albums and divide his time between his family and painting. "Le Sud"/"South" refers to a Louisiana-style mansion situated in Italy: a pleasant and idyllic place where the moody Ferrer seeks refuge from his dark side. Both versions serve as bookends to the album, which works best as a whole. Still, standout tracks are the funky "Mint Julep" (a relative of the Mojito cocktail) with its fuzzy guitar and the lengthy but mesmerizing "Hot Toddy." "The Garden" with its lazy organ and the bongo-laden "New York" sound fairly close to what the French band Air would build an entire career on. Remaining a relatively undiscovered gem, Nino and Radiah is in fact up there with classics like Melody Nelson and Polnareff's.

Local band of two brothers and two sisters doing amateur CSN/America '70s folkrock with a humble
vibe. Some people seem to rate this highly but I found it disappointing, with a insipid, spineless feel. "She's Gone" and "Sitting By The Ocean" are usually rated as the best tracks, but even those didn't strike me as terribly interesting. My personal reservations aside, this is a rare album that has sold for good $$$ and should have been in the Acid Archives 2nd Edition book, but was omitted due to a printing error. It's housed in the same generic cover as the Asylum LP.

One in a million.  Like the impression left from swallowing whole a great book, or a decaying love affair, the music of dear Ferris Wheel has the ability to reduce the atmosphere around you to only the shimmering hazy essence of true nature.  Time doesn't exist, emotion is a pure substance tangible to the touch or other sense, ego is debateable - and may fly away in the wind; you're left with the frailest sense of being human in that perhaps one is nothing but sentient nerve.  I do believe Ed, Stan and Rich are tapped just that closely to the main wire...  the more I have listened to this LP the less I can deny some kind of complete musical and personal honesty on their part.  For me, this is truly shaking.  It's a long record, and I'm glad for it.  It works.  Songs are played with an effervescently melancholic leisure - working mistakes and earthy blunders left intact, not out of a loner's despair, but rather some kind of effortless cosmic resignation.  There's no need to rush, obviously.  These guys could be the oldest souls in the world.  And they'd know it wouldn't make a difference whether 5 people or 400 heard their moment of absolute medieval-heartbreak jangle quintessence.  Batter for the baking are the production values - marvelously warm, lo-fi, and glowing in a midnight pluck and ramble so rarely found in the private press, or anywhere.  Surely a counterpart to American signposts like Virgil Caine or Virgin Insanity, albeit of a completely continental drift - and less claustrophobic than either of those LPs - tempered instead with a slightly screwy grin and wistfully Baroque sense of humor as languid and bittersweet as floating out to sea in an unnamed vessel on the Mediterranean knowing that you may have so much in store but the faces and places and loves that have come before are impossibly lost to the mist.  Soulfully exhausted, perhaps entirely weary but still present. Still feeling! As long as the moon shines on the decks! Yes!

Woods, eat your heart out: Ferris Wheel was DIY-ing their outsider electric folk almost 40 freakin’ years ago. Not to be confused with funky mid-’60s UK pop band The Ferris Wheel, Ferris Wheel’s ’74 private press LP Supernatural Girl (reissued on CD by Audio Archives in 2004) is a soft, subtle album of understated pleasure. Not a staggering revelation; not the kind of total obscurity that splashes out of nowhere like a water balloon and makes you slap your own forehead like, “My god! Where has this been all my life?!” It’s just an endearingly flawed, not-too-adventurous but quietly beautiful, eerily distant, and impressively patient and melodic little album. The lyrics are kinda hippie-dippy, but hey, it’s early-’70s psych-folk; ya gotta just take it with a grain of salt. It also sounds like it was recorded in a pillow fort, but that’s a distinct part of its charm; a testament to what folks used to pull off in meager circumstances before we digitized our existence. If you were to say that Supernatural Girl was a case of private press translating more  to “vanity press,” I would say… Maybe. But when it’s cloudy outside and you want something sullen, stony and easy on the ears, you’d be thankful this long lost lo-fi gem was born and preserved.

That encapsulates the sound of both of these Christiana albums better than I could hope to achieve. I suppose the original Berlin commune group Amon Duul (sans II) is a guidepost, but Furekaaben are far more exotic, and rather than pound mercilessly on whatever percussive instruments are lying around, they choose a far more melodic route - though not in any kind of traditional sense. I also can hear the New York utopian group Children of One as a possible comparison. The first album managed a release on the Danish cult label Spectator. The second is an extremely rare private pressing, that I somehow managed to own for a number of years. If the psych scene existed in the year 723, this is probably how it would've sounded. Ancient roots stuff here folks.

A genuine rarity, only released in 1971 as a follow-up to their “Prinsessevaerelset” album but way rarer since it was released in an edition of 100 copies. Music wise, it takes the basic ingredients of their first recording towards the next level of ecstatic orgasms. This self-intitled disc that came housed in a plain hardcover brown sleeve is a masterpiece of experimental acid folk jams. The music is completely stoned, propelled out of collective improvisation, almost throbbing along as some secret ceremonial procession. Again the music is essentially free form acid folk and its psychic maze reverberates off equal amounts of folk, free jazz, ethnic smash’n’grabs and a doze of avant-garde elements incorporating cello, oriental flutes, sanza, zither, gong, cymbal, bells, tabla, guitars, and lots of percussion instruments.
This is a music you have to undergo while sipping orange juice and wearing velvet underwear, at night with a head full of acid, with your nuts on fire and dancing to the beat of these thundering low-fidelity outbursts. Panoramic and kaleidoscopic at the same time, ending somewhere else while joined with pale riders galloping towards its blasted end-zone. Deliriously addictive. A must. Price: 400 Euro

is not just a rare find, it is ultra rare. The vinyl for this out of print album fetches $500
sometimes. And for those collectors who know their stuff, it is probably worth it. So enjoy this

Another of those mystery groups that were so common in Italy at the end of the 60's, Fourth Sensation only appeared on an album released on the Ricordi International label, as if they were a foreign group. No names are mentioned on the cover though there are four musicians pictured on the back, but two of the band members may have been Vince Tempera (later with The Pleasure Machine and Il Volo) and Ares Tavolazzi (Area).All the tracks are composed by Massimo Catalano (that was one of The Flippers, a very popular beat band of the early 60's).Musically speaking the album has the same style as The Underground Set or Blue Phantom, a totallly instrumental psych-influenced acid-jazz sound, with the Hammond organ in evidence. Fargo were a duo made up of Dean Wilden and Tony Decker from Salt Lake City, Utah.Their album is a pop psych delight. Strong and memorable melodies and hooks run throughout the entire set of self penned songs.
According to the liners on the album back cover, the duo were in their early twenties and probably God botherers. Not being the religious type in the slightest I've got a problem with songs about the 'Lord' or whatever he is. I just think twenty something rock and roll boys should be really tearing the place up (maybe it's my garage punk attitude showing through?)
The album was recorded at Al Casey's Music Room in Hollywood, California with help on guitar from Rick Cunha and on bass by Terry Paul.

"Century Records was a Californian custom record label which pressed tens of thousands of small-run records for schools, church groups and obscure local bands and Fifth Flight's Into Smoke Tree Village was one of those delightful garage/psych jewels that occasionally cropped up on the label. Into Smoke Tree Village, with its rustic mill wheel cover, was a garage psych album consisting mostly of covers, delivered with lashings of fuzz guitar and heavy, spooky organ. Fifth Flight was probably a popular high school hop band. They were a bit luckier than a lot of other groups doing covers of radio hits in the late '60s because they actually got to record a whole album. Their set opens with a middle of the road original called "Can't You See?" The rest of the record is made up of pedestrian versions of songs like "Midnight Hour" and "I'd Like to Make it with You." It's too bad they didn't have a prolific tunesmith onboard to give them something to work with because they were decent musicians. This will enlighten anyone wondering what a competent group of musicians working the top 40 circuit in 1969 was like.

Obscure early seventies private album of cover songs, the highlight of which is a version of Neil Young's Sugar Mountain with massive fuzz guitar. Overall, the album is pretty inept and is not recommended. The stock Century "mill" cover makes another appearance on this album. I think this group was from California.

The album, which was recorded in New York, is not greatly acclaimed although there are some good tracks including the mellow psychedelia of Tomorrow Waits For Today and Peace In My Mind. The outstanding track, however, is Bird with strong out-there vocals and a jazzy piano solo. In 1969, George Stavis and Timmy Ackerman recorded an album for Vanguard. In 1970 Stavis, Ackerman, Stern and Bowers formed a new band Oganookie in Santa Cruz, California with Bruce Frye. Oganookie released a great country psych album in 1973, and about half the members backed up Bruce Frye in 1974 on a local Santa Cruz compilation album.

Federal Duck made its appearance on the Musicor label in 1968. Formed by banjo exponent George Stavis, Federal Duck (named after the Federal Duck Stamp Program which was enacted by conserv/nist Jay “Ding” Darling and US President Franklin D Roosevelt in 1934), produced this lone musical effort which, once you get past the absurd cover, contains a consistently good album which is mildly jazzy, has some fine bass and an ever present darkish vibe. There are a few upbeat mold-breaking songs (one even sounds like the Holy Modal Rounders) but generally a soft-psych feel pervades throughout. It is interesting to speculate as to how Federal Duck ended up on the Musicor label, whose other acts included far more illustrious artists such as Gene Pitney, The Platters and George Jones. However, the relationship was destined to last for just the one album, with Stavis departing soon after to form the Californian communal rock band Oganookie and then to record an eponymous album for Vanguard. Although there really isn’t that much information about Federal Duck out there, the general consensus is that this is an album that deserves greater recognition than it has hitherto received....

The origins of Faithful Breath are somewhat obscure. Originally they were a symphonic rock band, in fact one of the earliest of the genre in Germany. Their debut album FADING BEAUTY has indeed justly become revered as a classic, having lengthy side-long suites, composed of a melodic, oft-sedate and dramatic rock, driven on by vast washes of keyboards (lots of Mellotron and synthesizers) and lengthy involved instrumentals, merging in with mysterious songs with a science fiction fantasy concept. Several years on (and after many line-up changes, in fact they were a guitar/keyboards/drums trio at one point) they returned with the album BACK ON MY HILL, which presented a less esoteric but still interesting rock music with contrasting LP sides: one of shorter hard-rock based tracks, and the other a lengthy suite spurred on by majestic Mellotron orchestrations. Later, with only one original member, Faithful Breath have become a Heavy Metal band gaining some international success, but far from their former glories and out of the scope of this book!

Biography:
Formed in 1965 in Billings, Montana, the Frantics were a sextet who drew their influences from Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and, later, Jim Morrison (note the Lizard Records imprint for their second album). They were a little on the heavy side in terms of their musical approach, and were ambitious--they played throughout the United States and relocated several times, to New Mexico and then to Colorado Springs, Colorado, before settling in Los Angeles in 1969. The group released a pair of singles, "La Do Da Da" b/w "Route 66" and "Midnight To Six Man" b/w "Shady Sam." They also cut two albums, Relax Your Mind, which dated from 1968 and was unreleased until the 1990's, and a second album, Conception, late in their history. At around that same time, they dropped the "s" from their name and worked as The Frantic.

We are informed that this group hailed from Billings, Montana, originally, though they toured all over the country. In 1968 they relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, then moved onto Colorado Springs before making L.A. their final base in 1969, removing the final 'S' from their name and recording the Conception LP. All told they lasted from 1965 to 1971 and just 1,000 copies of their first 45 were pressed back in 1966. The Conception album has been likened to early MC5, but the "Relax Your Mind" CD of an unreleased 1968 album, is more overtly psychedelic and is one of Collectables' more worthwhile reissues. It was recorded at Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, New Mexico. I wish that someone will reissued it on vinyl !!!

Self-produced, 1969's "Friendsound" makes absolutely no attempt to go down the commercial road and to ours ears may deserve to be noted as one of the first real "jam" albums. It's also one of those rare instances where the liner notes are dead-on ... "A musical free-for-all ... The idea for Friendsound came to us when we were in the early stages of creating our first album. We rounded up all out musician friends in the area and headed for a recording studio to have a musical free-for-all." That pretty much says it all. Exemplified by material such as the title track and "Childhood's End", the six extended numbers were largely instrumental in nature. Credited as group compositions, songs such as "CHildsong" and "Empire of Light" are full of studio experimentation, including backward tapes, sound effects and acid-influenced ramblings. Raiders members Levin, Smith and Volk were too grounded in top-40 pop to totally abandon such concepts as rhythm and melody, but it's pretty clear late night parting imbued them with a lot more freedom and creative latitude than your typical Paul Revere and the Raiders session. Not for the faint of heart, or top-40 junkies, but worth checking out for the more adventuresome of you out there ...

Upon leaving Paul Revere & The Raiders, Drake Levin, Phil Volk & Michael Smith formed Brotherhood who released two albums for RCA. In between those two releases, the trio teamed up with a few session musicians as Friend Sound, releasing "Joyride" A wild batch of instrumental psychedelia -- with plenty of avant garde touches thrown in! This is the sort of record that always restores our faith in major labels -- and it makes us realize that no matter how many Elvis Presley albums RCA was selling in the 60s, there was also room to put out odd little record like this one. The enigmatic Joyride are kind of a loose collective of hippie jazz musicians -- playing flute, organ, guitars, percussion, piano, recorder, shovel (shovel?), finger cymbals, and just about anything else that seemed to be handy -- and they had a style that was kind of like free-jamming jam band stuff, but with out the skill of most jam bands. Ok, it sounds like we're talking ourselves into a corner -- but the record's pretty darn compelling. It's kind of like the band and the engineers took a bucketful of drugs -- so many that they got really mellow and dark -- then went into the studio to cut a tripped-out album of instrumentals. The whole thing comes across with the same "anything goes" spirit of the NY 60s underground film scene -- but with none of the silliness of bands like The Fugs -- and it's that kind of energy that makes us love this one, and be proud that we're just giving it a space to exist. Titles include "Childhood's End", "Lost Angel Proper St", and "The Empire Of Light".

History:
Feo was an acoustic band formed in an institution for blind people: all members are blind or visually impaired. They play a kind of progressive folk music, though never anything which comes close to traditional tunes. Clearly the flute of Andersen is the leading instrument, but all members play their parts well and the arranging skills of the band are considerable. Their material, all self-composed, is quite diverse, the singing excellent and overall this is an interesting record with an atmosphere of its own. For a Spectator release this is surprisingly focused, at times maybe vaguely similar to British folkies Forest, though of course without the all-pervading mystic feeling of that band. It's a fine example of how people with very limited means can achieve music that still stands after almost 30 years. A highlight is the experimentation on "Rundgang", where again much is accomplished with only minimum effort. A gentle, peaceful and even soothing record, this will appeal to all admirers of acoustic music.

Filtskolyd is supposed to be less interesting. The CBS album was a collection of tracks from both these albums.

The lead singer claims he hits the highest note ever recorded by a man on a rock record. True or not - the girly-sounding vocals work well in this context. Interesting album that rewards a few close listens.

Some uninteresting solos, but mostly creatively designed songs that show thoughtful experimentalism. The lead singer claims that he hits the highest note ever recorded by a man on a rock record, and it’s hard to dispute that claim. Indeed, the girly-sounding vocals work well in this context. A few songs are pretty creepy, with one called “Nightmare” being a stand-out. Interesting album that rewards a few close listens.
