How We Spent Our Saturday

Ken had to work all day on today and I spent the day battling a terrible headache and a sore throat, so we had a very relaxed day.

As I said to Ken when he got home, "I don't think hell has frozen over, but they are experiencing a cool breeze today because Kenny has been an angel all day!" He dressed himself without being asked 5 times. He ate all his breakfast without complaint. And when I asked him to clean up the toy room he said, "Sure Mom!" and happily cleaned the whole room. He volunteered to help do things for Nathan and tried to help me because I wasn't feeling well. It was great! He can be the sweetest most loving little boy.

While Nathan was napping, Kenny and I did this:

252 pieces with countries that didn't exist when I took 7th grade geography!

Ken got home about 3:00 and we all went outside in an attempt to engage our sons in some type of actual sport. Ken and I threw a baseball back and forth and got Kenny to play with us for a few minutes, but that boy is all about pretend play (yesterday it was race car) and he has no interest whatsoever in organized sports.

We went to Dairy Queen with my mom for dinner and the munchkins went to bed. Not a bad day.

And last, but not least, a little reminder of why this blog carries this name.

Gotta Love 'Em!

MEN!

I emptied the hampers into the laundry baskets. I carried the baskets downstairs. I washed both loads. I folded the laundry. And I carried the baskets upstairs.

(In case you forgot my stance on laundry, click here.)

One basket had adult clothes- mostly my hubby's shirts.
The other basket had sheets and towels.

While I was hanging up my hubby's shirts, I asked him to please put the towels away. He happily agreed.

A few hours later after we had put the boys to bed, I went in our room and saw a laundry basket on our bed. Inside the basket were (you know where this is going) the sheets and a single washcloth. I looked at Ken and said, "I thought you said you'd put the towels away?"

"I did put the towels away, honey."

**Deep breath**

"Hon, will you please put all the things in the basket away."
"Sure! All you had to do was ask."

Boys Will Be Boys

It finally happened. Honestly, I was expecting it sooner. I am amazed it took this long.

What am I talking about?

Kenny cutting his hair!!

But he didn't stop there, he cut his shirt. His brand-new shirt!!!

He said it was an accident and I believed him until it slowly started to come out over the course of the evening that he cut his shirt because he wanted to know if the scissors would work. I noticed at dinner his hair was cut. That was when the full confession came out that he purposely cut his hair and shirt.

It was bound to happen. Lots of kids do this at his age and Kenny is most certainly the type of child to do such a thing.

The Hunt

Happy Easter!

After many years of last-minute-holy-crap-tomorrow is Easter planning, we finally had a last-minute-holy-crap-this week is Easter year. We're making progress!!! This was most likely due to my wife being home for spring break. After dying Easter eggs on Saturday night we put the kids to bed at the reasonable hour of 10 o'clock. Morning came quickly -too quickly for some (I'm not going to name names [as my wife points in my general direction...] Why are you doing that? Stop it! What? It's me? Whatever...), and we all headed off to church. That is Chiara and the boys headed off to church, while I was given a laundry list of things-to-do-
in-the-next-five-minutes-so-that-you-won't-be-late-
for-church-but-I'm-going-separately-so-that-I'm-not- late-just-in-case-the-laundry-list-takes-longer-
to-do-okay-see-you-bye! (Sorry for the dashes and the run-on sentence, but that's how I receive tasks and information most of the time.)

Tick-tock, tick-tock, my cell phone rings...

Me: Hello?

Sweetie: Hi-I-forgot-to-grab-the-checkbook-on-
my-way-out-so-would-you-bring-it-with-
you-when-you-come-because-I-couldn't-
find-the-checkbook-and-I-didn't-want-
to-be-late-for-church-so-would-you-bring-
the-checkbook-thanks-oh-and-would-you-also-
get-online-and-find-out-what-our-account-
balance-is-so-that-I-know-how-much-to-
write-the-check-out-for-and-don't-be-late-
I'll-see-you-in-two-minutes-k-bye.

Thirty-five minutes later, I arrive at church...

We had a good meeting that consisted of my wife substitute teaching in Primary. While she taught a lesson to 10 five year-olds that she had planned 10 minutes previously, I slept supported her by sleeping in the corner holding up pictures, and showing the kids how dorky a grown up looks when they do the actions to head-shoulders-knees-and-toes, etc...

We came home and I supervised the boys while they napped (that is to say that I napped while they were napping) while Chiara got busy in the kitchen.

...I'm soaring through the clouds in the helicopter I just bought...

LINDELL'S HERE!!!

Oh... the kids are up, time for my nap supervision to end. I visited with my friend while Chiara finished up in the kitchen. Eppie and Papa came to over and we had a lovely ham dinner. I must say I've really outdone myself. I married a great cook!

After dinner, the women-folk cleaned up, while the men-folk did the manly job of going into the back yard to play Easter Bunny. Once the Easter bunny [holding up fingers like quotes] left, we let the boys out into the yard to go on an egg hunt. (Just to clarify, the women-folk had finished their cleaning by this time and had joined back up with us men-folk).

As you can see, the boys have a very different understanding of what an Easter egg hunt is supposed to be.

After the hunt was over, Kenny decided that he had had so much fun with the first hunt, he needed to have a second one. I told him that while that sound fun, it wasn't a good idea, because once his eggs were on the ground it was fair game for Nathan to pick them up. Of course Kenny had a perfect understanding of what I had said and followed my logic completely...

Five minutes later Kenny is shrieking at the top of his lungs, screaming in hysterics, because Nathan is taking his eggs. Now I must explain that Nathan is not actually taking eggs out of Kenny's basket the way a mischievous three year-old would, he's simply fulfilling the "hunt" part of the second Easter egg hunt that Kenny has decided to host -with his eggs -out of his basket -for him and HIM ONLY to hunt. So much for logic and reason...

After getting Kenny to contain his outrage of the horrible injustice that had just occurred, Mommy rejected capitalism completely and took all the eggs from both the boys and divided them up evenly. This process was done three separate times because a certain five year can spot a communist plot for what it is, and took it upon himself to assist in the process. (One for me, one for you. Two for me, one for you. One for me, one for me. etc...) Finally getting the eggs distributed evenly, we thought the chaos was over...

Easter Egg Hunt, Round 3
Hosted by: Kenny -one who cannot listen to grown-ups, EVER!

This time Daddy and Papa got in on the action, charging in on the "hunt" from opposite sides of the field. Poor little Kenny stood in the middle, frozen with terror, desperately hoping to split himself in two so he could protect his precious eggs from the giant vermin that were attacking. Papa got one, and Daddy got three. It was a bad hunt for Kenny.

Communism once again took hold and the eggs were distributed evenly, and before a little boy who could not listen had a chance to start another egg hunt, we quickly rushed everyone inside.

(It is of note that somehow, even with the immediate rushing of everybody inside, Kenny still managed to host another egg hunt in which Kenny got all of the eggs, except for the three that Daddy got. He was giddy and gleeful that he had finally won. Kenny had more eggs than daddy. In his words, "Daddy only has three of my eggs, and I have all rest of the eggs!" Even though this arrangement just didn't seem quite right with him, it must be correct since it was his reasoning. Kenny was both perplexed and happy.)

Once inside, all the contents of the platics eggs were emptied in to baggies before the eggs were sent into banishment for another year. I HATE PLASTIC EGGS!!! During the next five minutes, the boy that takes an hour to eat three bites of dinner consumed more than half of his Easter booty. Nathan had two.

After company left, the boys went to bed, and went to bed, and went to bed, and went to bed, and finally went to bed -around 10 o'clock.

Happy Easter!!!

Dye Eggs, Dye!

**This picture has nothing to do with the post topic, but I wanted to keep a picture of our Easter dinner table.

We dyed Easter eggs. I went to the grocery store at about 3:00 in the afternoon to get my shopping done for the week and I forgot to get eggs. So I went back to the store at 6:30 to get eggs. I bought a few more things for the Easter baskets, some eggs decorating stickers, and no eggs. So I went back to the store at 7:00 and got eggs. This is what children do to your brain.

Everyone had a great time! Look at the concentration on these boys faces!

Ken also sticks out his tongue when in deep concentration.

Spring Break- Day 5

We spent the morning sleeping in and planting gardenia bushes. I now have 3 gardenias right next to our back door. I love the smell in the summer time. It is so fragrant and beautiful. We did some yard work (mow the grass). And I tried to treat our poor orange tree. It's been struggling for a year now. I'm pretty sure it dies over the winter, but I'm not ready to give up hope. After a quick nap, we headed off to the aquarium.

My boys LOVE the fish! The sting rays came right up to the glass where the boys were and nosed at them. The penguins did the same thing. They were squealing with delight at being so close to the animals and having them "play" with them in the tanks.

This is the full moon over the beach. It was just to beautiful to miss.

Spring Break- Day 4

The Livestock Show!
Warning: This is mostly a picture post.

We went with some friends to the livestock part of the rodeo. It had tons of kids activities. And here's just a small part of our day!

Oink Oink!

Both the boys really enjoyed seeing the baby chicks. Nathan was practically giddy with delight over the "birdies."

According to Kenny, the best part about looking at the show cattle was when one of them pooped.
Look at Kenny softly petting the cows nose. And Nathan trying to join the cow.

The boys were adorable at the petting zoo. They were very soft and gentle.

Yes, that's my boys on a camel! I gave them the choice of holding a baby pig, a pony ride, or a camel ride. The camel won hands down!

We saw lots of other things I didn't post picture of, including pig races, an animal birthing center, raw cotton, rabbits, goats, and bees. We had a wonderful time and both boys woke up Friday morning asking if we could go see the animals again. i told they would have to wait until the rodeo next year, but I promise we'd take them again!

Spring Break- Day 3

Awww.....aren't they cute. We had a great day. We all vacated the house this morning so Ken could get some boat picture editing done without us bugging him. We went to my friend Jean's house. She has kids that my kids really like to play with and Jean is awesome to hang out with. We had so much fun! After coming home, Nathan took a nap and Kenny and I headed out to Target to get s few pairs of shorts and shirts for summer. Their current sizes are:
Kenny: pants-4T, shirts- 5T or boys XS
Nathan: pants-12-18 months, shirts- 3T
The shirts are pretty baggy on both of them, but the next size down is a little to tight. I had a nice time shopping with Kenny by himself. He was still "racing" all over the store and I had to call him Lightening McQueen to get him to respond to me, but his running around is much easier to contain without Nathan.

We got home and headed out to the backyard to play for a little bit. That's when I took the picture above. I didn't pose that either. They hug each other all the time. So cute!!!

I left at about 5:00 with some friends to go to the rodeo. I was a little skeptical about going because I had never been to a major rodeo or seen a live concert, but Tara convinced me (thanks Tara)! I had a blast!! I always knew I kinda liked rodeos, but I realized last night that I'm really into it. I don't even have a favorite event- loved them all! I was intently watching the scoreboards and cheering on the competitors- it was great! Following the awesome rodeo action is a concert. Our rodeo draws some big names. Last night I saw Fergie. It was a good show. I was fairly unfamiliar with her music because I listen to country if I listen to the radio, but she is quite the entertainer. And for my Utah Guitar Hero family- she did Barracuda.

Overall I had the fabulous day. My boys had a great time playing with friends and I learned I am a rodeo fanatic. We are going to take the boys either tomorrow or Friday to the livestock shows. I really think they will love it!

Spring Break- Day 2

We had a take it easy kind of day. I was allowed to sleep until 8:00 before the screaming of little children for me to wake up became so loud I could no longer ignore it. I spent the morning cleaning the kitchen and living room, though I'm not sure why because it is already messy. Then I was off to the grocery store for diapers and Tide- two things that are not good to run out of with little boys. Next stop was Beauty and Barber to get my mass of frizzy hair trimmed. I timed my outing perfectly so that as soon as I got home we had a bowl of Spaghetti-Os and grapes and it was already nap time- for me and Nathan that is, I think little Kenny played video games. All I care about is that he left me blissfully undisturbed on the couch and the house was still in one piece. I tried out a new recipe for dinner which, as usual, Ken happily ate and the boys balked at. After dinner we played a little hide-and-go-seek before putting the kids to bed. And now I'm off to plop myself onto the couch to watch Biggest Loser.

Have a good night!

Spring Break- Day 1

I got to spend the first day of Spring Break doing one of my most favorite things. Dig in dirt. I'm not the best at it, but I learn a little more each year. By the time I'm an old retired person, I'll be a pro! Last year I had 6 planters by the front door. This year I have 10. Do you think I went a little overboard? Oh well. I LOVE my flowers. We also planted the weird little area in the front by the door. It looks a bit odd now because the bush in the center is small. It's an azalea and will grow to by a 4 foot tall shrub that blooms all year! We have had a lot of trouble with this particular area because it gets late afternoon sun and poor drainage. Supposedly these plants will do well with that if we add some acidic soil in the bed. We'll see. I can't wait till my flowers really take root and start cascading over the pots.

It was also a very windy day. We got out the kites and had a little fun in the back yard.
And the biggest news- Kenny voluntarily ate his plate clean at all three meals today without us having to beg him even once!! Sound the trumpets!!!!!!

Family

I know I'm a week behind, but we had a great time with Margaret and Spencer at the beginning of the month. I forgot my camera most of the time, but I did get a few pictures of our backyard cookout. We had a great time. We went to the Museum of Natural History/ We had never been there and it was great. We went to the special DaVinci exhibit and saw models of some of his inventions. He was truly a man ahead of his time. I can only imagine what his mind could create if he had access to our modern technology. The weather was beautiful so we ate a lovely seafood dinner outside on a covered patio. We spent about an hour cruising the Galleria mall before heading home. On their last day here, we went for a stroll on the Strand and saw the cruise ships getting ready to pull out of port. And we had a hot dog/s'mores backyard cookout. I love having company and family around and we were so happy to have ya'll visit!!

Who Ate All The Salsa?!?

NATHAN!

This boy, I tell you. While Spencer was here we went to a Mexican restaurant. Like most of these establishments, they make their own chips and salsa. Their salsa is awesome...but it is killer hot! Nathan saw Daddy dipping his chips in the salsa and decided he wanted some of that action. I was sitting next to the little man, so I gave him a chip and slid my bowl of salsa over to him. In my defense I tried to lightly dip the chip into the salsa, but he is of the mindset that at 3 years old he is big enough to do everything himself, thank you very much! So he takes this chip and scoops up a HUGE amount of salsa. I tried to warn him, but I bet you can guess how well that went. He put the entire bite in his mouth. A few seconds passed as he began to process the sensations that were occurring in his little mouth. Only after careful analysis did the scream/cry begin. We tried to give him water, soda, another plain chip...but he would have none of it. He just sat there, hanging his tongue out and crying. It took a minute but I figured out that he wanted me to use my napkin to wipe his tongue. He stopped crying instantly and grinned.

We all got a good laugh and went on with our adult conversation. Meanwhile, Nathan loaded up another chip with salsa and popped it in his mouth. I have to admit, I was baffled that he would do it again. He started crying and I immediately offered the napkin. After wiping his tongue, he immediately went to for another chip and salsa.

And that was the sequence we continued until the entire bowl of salsa was gone. Chip-salsa-wait-scream/cry-wipe-chip-salsa...

Kenny watched the whole thing.
We asked him if he wanted to try some salsa, but for some reason he said no!

Quotes

Here are a few of the latest zany things my kids have said.

Nathan has a cold and a runny nose. Kenny came up to him in the bathroom while we were giving him cough medicine and said, "Eww....a booger." Nathan replied with great emphasis, "Tenny, it not a cheeseburger!!!"

While Spencer and Margaret were here we got on the topic of nicknames and how both my kids actually use nicknames instead of their given names. Ken said to Kenny, "Your real name is Kenneth Michael." Kenny said, "That's only my name when I'm in trouble."

Kenny was doing what big brothers do best- annoying his little brother for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Nathan finally had enough, turned around, and yelled in his meanest 3-year old baby voice, "Tenny, no Star War movie for you!"

You need a little background info to understand this one. Kenny's school uses a color coded behavior system. Each child has a clip with their name on it and they move the clip depending on their behavior. The codes go as follows:
green: great job
yellow: warning
blue: sad, timeouts
red: removed from classroom to the office

At dinner, we asked Kenny how he did at school. He said, "Well, I just got on yellow." Daddy said, "You're always on yellow." Kenny got very defensive and said, "No, sometimes I'm on blue!"

And this is one of my favorites! Kenny was watching Return of the Jedi and got to the very end when they are celebrating the end of the second death star with the Ewoks. And Luke was sending Darth Vader off into the force with a traditional Jedi funeral. Now Kenny has seen this movie many times, and just at this moment he had a startling epiphany.

"Heeeeeyyyyy... He's cooking his father!"

Of course everyone within earshot dropped to the floor in laughing fits. Kenny decided to help with situation with further commentary.

"He's probably going to become a Darth Vader marshmallow!"

5 Year Old For Sale

Seriously. I'm taking offers. It's like sometimes he simply misplaces his brain.

In the last two hours he has wrecked total havoc here. He decided to build a city and opened 5 different puzzles and put every piece all over the living room floor. I spent 20 minutes cleaning up and sorting out about 100 puzzle pieces.

He also threw toys down the stiars, I got after him and we clean it all up. Then, while I was in the restroom, he threw train track pieces at the wall in the toy room, laughing hysterically. By the time I got there, he had put about 15-20 knicks and holes in the wall.

I put them both to bed and while I am picking up puzzle pieces, I hear giggling and laughing upstairs. I sneak upstairs to find him in the bathroom with poopy toilet paper all over the floor.

We love him...even when he drives me nuts.

Riding Along In An Automobile

Our family, Margaret and Spencer, are in town. I had to work yesterday, but Ken was going to do something with them and the kids, pick me up after work, and we'd all go to the aquarium.

But things did not go exactly as planned.

Ken got called to interview for a job, so everyone loaded up and drove an hour to the airport to hang out while Ken interviewed (he got the job). Now, I was at work, but apparently they drove to downtown and ended up near Rice University and who knows where else-driving all over the city. By about 4:00 they picked me up- having been in the car all day except the airport. We drove to the house to let the dog out and headed to the aquarium. Ken wanted to take the longer scenic route and drove down the water front beaches. We got to the aquarium at 5:45. According to the website, the aquarium was open until 8:00, but apparently they were closing at 6:00. They let us walk in for free and look around for about 10 minutes. Back at the car, we decided to drive to the boardwalk and have a seafood meal on the waterfront. An hour later we arrive at the boardwalk only to find out our favorite restaurant is no more!!! We go the the seafood house next door and after about 15 minutes of waiting and perusing the less-than-appealing menu, we leave to go to a different restaurant in search of crab.

Two restaurant later we decided to leave the boardwalk to drive to another restaurant who advertises crab. But the wait time is an hour. By this time it is 8:10 at night and I had not eaten a bite of food since 10:30 am. So we drive 30 minutes back towards home and end up at a Mongolian bbq. It was wonderful...of course I was so hungry roadkill sounded good. We made astop at Garden Ridge after dinner. I need a few things for work, Margaret bought a church bag for about $3.00, and Nathan found a Very Hungry Caterpillar puzzle. He is addicted to that book and he loving carried that puzzle all over the store, to the car, and all the way home. It was so cute! We finally got home at 10:30.

On an upside, Kenny gave us the recipe for eating shark. He said you need to "fish it out, un-wet it, chop it up into little pieces (insert hand movements), and cook it with glass and light."

He was also very distressed on our way to the bbq place exclaiming, "We are never going to eat again! Everything is closed to us!"

So...I'm Still Not Skinny

I just don't know what the problem is. I get up and eat a small bowl of generic Special K cereal. Then I go to work and enrich the minds 19 tiny munchkins (and by enrich I mean try to make sure they don't realize they out number me). I get my 20 minutes for lunch at 10:30 in the morning in which I wolf down my food at a pace normally reserved for competitive eaters. When I get home I try to make a sensible dinner. I just don't get it.

Maybe it's the handful of M&Ms I eat when someone spills an entire bottle of glue inside their desk.

Or maybe the bag of Fritos I eat when I have to ask someone for the 100,000th time to stop cutting your hair!

Or maybe it's the bag of butter popcorn I eat when someone won't go to bed and insists on kicking the wall repeatedly for an hour-because it is completely rational that kicking a wall will get you out of bedtime.

No, I think it is because of the three 100 calorie packs of chocolate chip cookies I eat when my son decides to turn the inside door of our car into a booger farm. Last time we cleaned the inside of the car, there were at least 70 boogers being held captive by a streak of snot. We gently asked that all boogers be wiped on a tissue. Today, I realized that Booger Farm 2 was in full swing.

So, why is it that I'm not skinny?!?

A Glimpse Into Our Chaos

This went on for about 20 minutes...sometimes with both of them "making music."

Yard Work Day

Yesterday was a BEAUTIFUL day! It was warm with a cool breeze. We spent the day outside getting things ready for the summer. Ken chopped down the dead parts of the large tree in the back yard. It was coming down slowly with every rain storm but he decided not to wait for hurricane season. I think he just wanted to climb a tree and play with the chainsaw. I eventually had to pull the electrical plug to the saw to get him to stop. I got the best job. I got to take pictures, make sure the logs did not fall on any children or dogs, and pick up all the fallen limbs and drag large logs around. Yipee.

We also have banana trees in our backyard. These need to be cut back every year. They are messy and full of water. They are also completely against all laws of nature.
**This is absolutely NOT an exaggeration**
Within 1 hour of chopping the banana trees off at about head level, they had grown two inches! Two inches in an hour. That's just not right.

Ken did most of the tree chopping, while Kenny and I bundled leaves and stalks with twine. I did get to use the machete a bit. It was fun. We put little Kenny to work as well. He took a swipe at one of the smallest trees. He also picked up leaves and sticks and pulled weeds. Look at the cute little work gloves he's got on! We're trying to teach him to work as a family. It's going okay...sometimes. I was so proud of him and how hard he worked with us.

Nathan helped too. He took a nap which saved all our sanity. Then he helped "mow" the yard. What would we do without him.

Saturday, March 1, 2008

Nathan is a little Kenny-emulator. He copies everything his big brother does.

Example: I ask Kenny to get dressed for bed. He does not want to go to bed, so he starts crying and pitching a fit. Nathan hears some commotion and comes running in with a grin on his face. He stops as soon as he gets to his brother. Nathan looks up at him for a few seconds, assessing the situation, and begins to cry as well. After about 10 seconds, Nathan stops crying, ans looks at his brother to re-assess the situation. If Kenny is still crying, so does Nathan. This cycle continues until Mommy and Daddy are laughing so hard no one is crying anymore.
