Introduction

The Violet-chested Hummingbird is a large hummingbird of montane evergreen forest in northern Venezuela. It has been placed in the genus Heliodaxa (brilliants), and it resembles birds in that group except for its longer, more decurved bill and the large patch of violet on the breast of the male. It occurs in the lower levels of tall forest, avoiding edges. There is little information on the feeding or breeding behavior of this species.
