Ways to improve Bhawani Singh (polo player)

[edit]

Hello, Jaipur.historian,

Thank you for creating Bhawani Singh (polo player).

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Notability for him as a topic is very thin here. A lot of these sources are WP:PRIMARY (the school he was involved in). I could not find any WP:SIGCOV from a quality Indian RS on him as a notable topic. Seems to be a lot of addtional PROMO for his family.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Aszx5000}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

I am generating articles on the former commandants of the Presidents bodyguard before their raising day that is due soon - for this specific article I have referenced 39 times;
  • Books (8 references) → Published, independent works on cavalry, polo, and Rajasthan history.
  • National newspapers (6+ references) → Times of India, Tribune, India Today, Telegraph—showing significant independent coverage.
  • Magazines & International Press (10+ references) → Tatler, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, AsianAffairs. Independent, notable lifestyle and society coverage.
  • Official records (4 references) → Rashtrapati Bhavan site, Mayo College publications, alumni societies, government sources.
That’s over 20 strong independent references (books + national papers + major magazines), which easily satisfies Wikipedia’s General Notability Guideline (WP:GNG).
I don't really understand your continued concerns, you clearly have an interest in Australian rock climbers as I do in India's military history and polo heritage. Tagging this page without really understanding the editing is somewhat unfair.

Thank you for finally engaging and your page has been tagged as part of patrolling. List me WP:THREE quality indepenent references (i.e. not linked in any way to him) that cover him in detail as a notable subject? Passing mentions in various sources may show sombody exists but not that they are notable. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:33, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
While some sources are indeed institutional (Mayo College, Rashtrapati Bhavan, etc.), the article is
not
built solely on WP:PRIMARY. There is a clear body of
independent, secondary coverage
:
  • Books and histories: Horse Warriors: India’s 61st Cavalry (Dalal & Forty), Polo in India (Singh), Right of the Line: The President’s Bodyguard (Govt. of India publication), and Rima Hooja’s History of Rajasthan — all independent, published works providing substantial context.
  • National newspapers: Times of India, The Tribune, India Today, National Herald, and The Telegraph carry multiple reports about his polo career and military postings. These are independent, high-quality RS and not family-produced promotion.
  • International magazines: Coverage in Tatler, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and AsianAffairs is independent lifestyle and sporting coverage, not institutional material.
This is more than “thin mention” — it demonstrates WP:SIGCOV across multiple independent publications, Indian and international.
Regarding WP:PROMO:
The subject is often covered in contexts that are not family-driven promotion, but in national events (e.g. President’s Bodyguard Raising Day), polo tournaments (Times of India, AsianAffairs), and institutional histories (Dalal, Singh, Hooja). These are significant, independent contexts.
Finally, the article performs a necessary WP:DISAMBIG function. Without it, readers would conflate Maharaja Bhawani Singh of Jaipur (1931–2011) with Colonel Bhawani Singh Nathawat (b. 1958). Both are from Jaipur, both played polo, and both were linked to the President’s Bodyguard and Mayo College — but they are distinct individuals. That differentiation itself is encyclopedically useful, especially given the overlap in domains.
In short:
  • There is significant secondary coverage in reliable sources.
  • The subject is independently notable as a polo player and army officer.
  • The article is not family promo; it contextualises his career through reliable Indian and international reporting.
  • Deletion would erase an important disambiguation between two prominent, similarly named figures.
Jaipur.historian (talk) 11:39, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
As I said on top, just list the WP:three indepdent (non-primary) quality sources that have some level of in-dept coverage on this subject. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:40, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Per WP:THREE, here are three independent, reliable sources that provide substantive coverage of Colonel Bhawani Singh:
  1. The Times of India (29 May 2003), “Polo story: A gaping hole between now and then.” – Major national daily, with extended discussion of Army polo’s decline and Singh’s career in that context.
  2. AsianAffairs (30 August 2022), “Painting Pacho’s Ponies.” – International affairs magazine article on Indian polo traditions, with detailed coverage of Singh’s involvement and role.
  3. The Tribune (2 September 2005), “India – NCR stories.” – Independent regional/national paper providing coverage of his polo and Army service in its sports/human-interest reporting.
Together, these satisfy the independent, secondary, reliable criteria under WP:GNG, and are not family- or institution-linked sources. Jaipur.historian (talk) 11:40, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
The first is clearly a WP:NEWSORGINDIA PROMO piece. The other two are not about him but other main topics (and the source quality of #2 is poor). If this person in not notable enough in India for a quality indepedant Indian source to cover him, why do you think that he would be notable to en-WP? Aszx5000 (talk) 11:44, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
The problem here specifically with this subject is the overlap in name for example - https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india-play-england-in-world-cup-polo-opener/articleshow/36067165.cms this is my subject who is different to the maharaja- but the same as the school administrator Jaipur.historian (talk) 11:46, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
The are just sources that act as verification that he exists - they are not in-dept coverage on him as a notable topic. That is the key to establishing notability on en-WP. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:49, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes and combined together they make him a notable topic - Mayo College the school he is administering is one of the two leading schools in the nation. Think of it as Eton of India, because of conflating my subject with the Maharaja Bhawani Singh - it becomes very difficult to asses clear information on him. Having a page open for discussion that others can come and review helps both from the stand point of Mayo College and the Presidents Bodyguard that is going to have it's raising day with the president of India. The book polo in India has a chapter on him and the book on Maharaj Prem Singh. I intended to write a biography on every Indian that commanded the presidents bodyguard as it is a matter of military interest in India too. Jaipur.historian (talk) 11:54, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Biographies are only of interest to en-WP if you can meet WP:Notability. Unfortunately, if you cannot meet that threashold, then soonr-or-later, they all get deleted. That is how it work here. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:57, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I believe this has more than met notability and it's only because, I deleted your comments rather than respond to them that we are here. I am sure other editors can weigh in on this at some point - because it seems its your opinion versus mine. Jaipur.historian (talk) 12:01, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

The subject clearly meets the requirements of [WP:GNG] and [WP:NPOL]/[WP:NSPORT] due to significant independent coverage in national and international sources. The current sourcing includes multiple books (e.g. Right of the Line: The President’s Bodyguard (Govt. of India), Dalal’s Horse Warriors: India’s 61st Cavalry, Singh’s Polo in India), national newspapers (Times of India, India Today, The Tribune, The Telegraph), and international magazines (Tatler, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, AsianAffairs). These go well beyond trivial mentions and provide substantial, verifiable coverage of the subject’s career and public activities.
It is also important to stress the need for disambiguation between Maharaja Bhawani Singh of Jaipur (1931–2011) and Colonel Bhawani Singh Nathawat (b. 1958), the polo player and former Commandant of the President’s Bodyguard. Both individuals are from Jaipur, both played polo, both were connected with the President’s Bodyguard and Mayo College, but they are different people. The Maharaja is deceased, while Colonel Bhawani Singh continues to play active public roles.
The subject’s relevance is reinforced by participation in major national events:
  • The President’s Bodyguard Raising Day (an annual, state-level military ceremony), where he served as Commandant.
  • The Mayo College 150th anniversary celebrations, one of India’s most high-profile educational commemorations, where he has holds governance roles.
These contexts demonstrate sustained, public, and national-level recognition.
Given the combination of (1) strong secondary sourcing, (2) enduring public roles at the national level, and (3) the clear need for differentiation from the Maharaja of Jaipur, this article merits retention and improvement rather than deletion. Jaipur.historian (talk) 11:19, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Great that you have started to engage, now thar the article is in WP:AfD (it happens), however, I refer to my question above. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:34, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Heyo. Regarding your recent edits to Shiv Raj Singh (entomologist) when you modified the page, you introduced unknown parameters. Specifying |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= needs to be defined in the template in order to work. You can look at the documentation for the template being used, but it is also helpful to use the preview button before saving an edit; this helps find any errors that have been made and ensures that the values added are displaying correctly. Below the edit box is a Show preview button. Pressing this will show what the page will look like without actually saving it. It is highly recommended that editors use this before saving. Note I have likely fixed the error by now so check the history of the page to see how it was fixed. If you have any questions of if I can help explain further, please let me know! Thank you. Welcome and introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

Hi Jaipur.historian! I noticed your contributions and wanted to welcome you to the Wikipedia community. I hope you like it here and decide to stay.

I've noticed that you've expressed an interest in the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups. Unfortunately, due to a history of conflict and disruptive editing, it has been designated a contentious topic and is subject to some strict rules. This designation is broadly construed, so if you have to ask whether a particular edit is covered, you should assume it is.

The rule that most affects new editors is the prohibition on making any edit related to South Asian castes or Indian military history, including on talk pages, unless you are logged into an account that is at least 30 days old and has made at least 500 edits.

Any edits you make contrary to the contentious topic procedures are likely to be reverted, and repeated violations can lead to your being blocked from editing. If you have any questions about the contentious topic procedure, you can ask for help!

Feedback
The reviewer, S0091, left the following feedback:
This draft's references do not show that the person meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion for people. The draft requires multiple published secondary sources that:
  • provide significant coverage: discuss the person in detail, not brief mentions or interviews lacking independent analysis;
  • are reliable: from reputable outlets with editorial oversight;
  • are independent: not connected to the person, such as interviews, press releases, the subject's own website, or sponsored content.
Please add references that meet all three of these criteria. If none exist, the subject is not yet suitable for Wikipedia.
Almost all the sources are her work which are WP:primary and not independent. Need sources that meet the above criteria. S0091 (talk) 19:06, 20 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
