This page is about the use of LLMs to generate or rewrite content for articles. For guidance on using LLMs for other purposes, see Wikipedia:Responsibly using large language models.

The use of large language models (LLMs) to generate or rewrite article content is prohibited except for the uses as outlined below.

1. Editors are permitted to use LLMs to suggest corrections to their own writing, and to incorporate them after human review. This is limited to spelling, punctuation, capitalisation, grammar, and other simple mistakes. Editors must ensure that any text copyedited in this manner is still supported by the sources cited.
2. Editors are permitted to use LLMs to translate articles from another language's Wikipedia into the English Wikipedia, but must follow the guidance laid out at Wikipedia:LLM-assisted translation. Unreviewed or poorly reviewed LLM translations often result in similar policy violations to content generated from scratch.

LLM-generated text often violates several of Wikipedia's core content policies, and can be produced at such a rate that makes review by other editors infeasible. A series of edits by a user determined to have a history of AI use may be presumptively removed if certain conditions are met; see Wikipedia:Presumptive removal of AI-generated content for guidance.

Persistent use of large language models outside of the above exceptions is considered disruptive and will result in an editor being blocked from editing. The writing style of some editors may appear similar to the output of LLMs, meaning that the imposition of sanctions requires evidence beyond basic stylistic or linguistic indications. When evaluating possible LLM use, it is best to consider the full pattern of the editor's recent edits and whether the edits comply with core content policies.
