Warning users on G8

[edit]

I have no idea if this is intentional coding design or something else, but in the past few days, I've been G8-tagging articles. However, G8 tagging a talk page will not notify the page creator, even though a template exists for it, and if the creator tries to find the deleted page, well they'll find out. I don't have a GitHub account nor email so I can't do it there. But, should Twinkle warn users on G8 speedy deletion? — SimpleObjects-9ei đŸ–ïž/☀/đŸ„” (see talk) 19:04, 14 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

It's intentional coding, G8 is not given as an option in Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences for notifications (I have no opinions on whether we should or not, I'm just answering the first part of the post). Primefac (talk) 13:40, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Any more updates? I tag pages quite daily (as TAs and new accounts often do this) and I have to notify TAs manually due to this. — SimpleObjects-9ei 🍂/🌰/đŸ€— (see talk) 23:32, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Problem with admin functions

[edit]

Hello, folks,

I use Twinkle throughout the day with all of my admin work and over the past two days I've had problems with it. I use it to delete CSD-tagged pages and it won't delete them, giving me instead these bright red messages:

  • Deleting page: Failed to delete the page: error "error" occurred while contacting the API.

Sometimes it will work on a second or third try if I refresh the screen but I often give up and just use our other, manual method. Any ideas? I'm really a big fan of Twinkle, it's simple and intuitive and I'd like to continue to use it without getting all of these error messages. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 17:16, 4 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

It seems to be working now but I'll leave up my message in case it provides some useful data. Liz Read! Talk! 17:19, 4 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Likely either a connection issue on your end or server-side (I've had a couple of cases the last few days where I get a server-crash error). Almost any error related to the API is going to be something temporary or otherwise connection-based (as opposed to something wrong with the script itself). Primefac (talk) 11:04, 5 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Probably a server or ISP issue rather than a "needs code to be changed in Twinkle" issue. Closing without action. –Novem Linguae (talk) 12:00, 6 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

New single issue warning idea

Hello! I don't know if this is common, but some of my mentees spam the same questions over and over again until they get an answer, and it gets annoying fast. I was thinking that there should be a single issue warning on this. EXAMPLE: Hello! I'm <Username>, and I've noticed that you were spamming massages on <Users talk page>. This may violate Wikipedia:Spam. Please be patient. this is a example and may be edited to better state the warning. WXchaser (talk) 13:50, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

WXchaser (talk) 13:55, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@WXchaser: Hey there! Consider cross-posting this to Wikipedia talk:Template index/User talk namespace (which the talk page of Wikipedia:WikiProject User warnings redirects to) as well. ~ rusty meow ~ 14:16, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
So can I just check, we don't even have a template yet, but we want to add it to Twinkle? Primefac (talk) 20:25, 12 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Rusty, this is the cross-post; it was started at Wikipedia talk:Template index/User talk namespace just before you posted. See § Spam on user page warning example.
Primefac, it should be neither at Twinkle, nor a template at all, as there isn't a verified use case where it would be applicable. Please see my comment at Wikipedia talk:Template index/User talk namespace#Spam on user page warning example. (Can someone please hat this, with a |status=moved, to avoid further fragmentation?) Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 20:39, 12 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sure, it wasn't exactly obvious this was the cross-post. Primefac (talk) 20:57, 12 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Custom welcome not working

[edit]

I'm assuming this is me being very confused about something, but when I add a custom welcome from preferences, it disappears (e.g. doesn't show up either in preferences or the list of available welcome templates). Rusalkii (talk) 18:58, 13 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect block reason on block log

[edit]

I soft blocked User:Harrystylesofficialaccount as the name of a well-known person, and that is the block that was applied, and that is the message that was placed on the user talk page, but the block log entry states the block is a hard block for impersonating another user. -- Whpq (talk) 13:09, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

The block you applied is a hard block, as autoblock is not disabled and account creation is blocked. The talk page message is from {{Uw-ublock-wellknown}}, which as far as I can tell doesn't say anything about it being a softblock. The username impersonation preset in Twinkle is by default a hard block. – SD0001 (talk) 17:56, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The option I chose in Twinkle was to use the block preset "Username represents a well-known person, soft block", so the action taken does not match the listed actions in the preset, nor does the block log entry. -- Whpq (talk) 18:55, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

LLMPROD?

[edit]

LLMPROD is a variant of PROD, like BLP PROD, which Twinkle has. Why doesn't it have LLMPROD then? | One Reaction was here. Got a complaint? 14:35, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

This is the first I've heard of LLMPROD. 331dot (talk) 14:36, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't feel like explaining, check out WP:LLMPROD to see what it is. | One Reaction was here. Got a complaint? 14:37, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's a bit redundant because we usually just G15 it. ChompyTheGogoat [ Bleat | Munched ] 05:05, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
it's probably for if there is still major problems, but G15 is inapplicable. | One Reaction was here. Got a complaint? 11:29, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Open user talk in new tab vs window

[edit]

In Chromium based mobile browsers a new "tab" is essentially a new window, and "new tab in group" functions like actual tabs on desktop that are easier to swap between. Is there any way the Twinkle setting can be adapted to accommodate this? It's much easier when I'm hopping back and forth between an article, talk, guidelines, noticeboards, etc. ChompyTheGogoat [ Bleat | Munched ] 05:13, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Bug: Remove obsolete reasons

[edit]

Currently, "Inappropriate use of user talk page while blocked" is listed as a protection reason at MediaWiki:Gadget-twinkleprotect.js, even though it was removed from MediaWiki:Protect-dropdown because talk page access can now be revoked through the blocking feature meaning all relevant examples would fall under block evasion/socking. The same goes for "User talk of blocked user" on MediaWiki:Gadget-twinkleprotect.js (there's no socking reason for full protection, but then again "User talk of blocked user" was probably there before TPA pulling and EC were implemented). They should be removed accordingly. ăƒŸăƒ©P@Miraclepine 20:56, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sockpuppet reports wrongly listed

[edit]

At "Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/User:Example" instead of ""Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Example"

See e.g. . Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits; 19:38, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

I believe that is because you put in the username with the User: prefix. Primefac (talk) 11:46, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's the sort of thing software should clean up, or at least warn about. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits; 14:07, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
It does; the next to the text box says to insert the name without the prefix. Primefac (talk) 14:14, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's obviously not what I mean. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits; 14:49, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Clearly that's not obvious. Personally I can never remember whether or not to include the prefix (whether it be for a User or when I nominate a page at TFD) so I'm always checking that info popup. I'm a bit of two minds here, one in which the user should read the info tips and therefore should know the proper information to include on the infobox, and the other in which the tool should assume the user knows nothing and silently strip out the prefix (but then there's no point in including directions on how to fill out the box...). Either way, question asked, question answered, I'm not a Twinkle dev so I couldn't really say how feasible it would be to do what you ask. Primefac (talk) 15:04, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

CFD/S: avoid subscription to the "Current requests" section

[edit]

I was very surprised that this issue hasn't been brought up before. If you have enabled the setting Preferences â†’ Editing â†’ Discussion pages â†’ Tick Automatically subscribe to topics, then every WP:CFD/S nomination (speedy renaming for categories) will cause you to be subscribed to the section Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy#Current requests, which is annoying.

I planned to report it as a bug, but code turned out to be very clear even with my limited JS knowledge, and I opened a pull request to fix this glitch. —andrybak (talk) 20:21, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! Merged and deployed. – SD0001 (talk) 04:04, 14 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
