Born in London to American parents, Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011) started acting as a child when her family relocated to Los Angeles, breaking out in the lead role of National Velvet (1944). Her transition to adult roles in the 1950s led to roles in A Place in the Sun (1951), Giant (1956), and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), and culminated in an Oscar win for BUtterfield 8 (1960). Offscreen, she was a target of jokes for her turbulent personal life and her marriages to eight different men, but she remained active in various charitable causes up until her death.
