Steam Link

Steam Link app on Nvidia Shield w/ Steam Controller?
If I got an Nvidia Shield (so I can finally stream in 4K HDR), would I be able to use my Steam controller as long as I use the Steam Link app for the Shield?

Yep! You'll pair it to the Shield in normal Bluetooth settings, but it won't show up as a controller to Android, so you'll still need to use the Shield controller or remote to actually launch the Steam Link app. As soon as you've launched the app, though, it should find the Steam Controller and use it.
Awesome, that's great news! And it will still be 4K HDR via the Steam Link app, correct?

Provided that everything involved is 4K, it should be 4K; you can't take a computer that's set up for 1920x1080 and stream it at 4K, because the Steam streaming captures the output as displayed on the computer's monitor. But if your computer is displaying in 4K then yep, you're good to go.

Unfortunately, I'm genuinely not sure about HDR. HEVC (which the Steam Link app supports, if you enable it in streaming settings) can encode HDR video and the Shield TV supports HDR (provided your TV has HDR10 support enabled for that HDMI input), but I'm not 100% certain offhand that the encoding side grabs it. Someone who has HDR video might need to answer that one.
I do have a PC that is capable of HDR (Strix 1070). I already stream HDR videos (Plex) to my TV, this post is more about being able to stream Steam games in HDR using the Shield.
I suppose it wouldn't matter if Steam Link streams in HDR or not, if I can use my Steam Controller with Nvidia Gamestream. Worst case I still have an Xbox 360 controller lying around although I really prefer my Steam Controller.
I can report back with confidence that HDR will not work unless your PC monitor is HDR capable.

Regardless of how I stream from my PC to the Shield (Gamestream, Steam Link app, etc) the HDR options in the game settings are grayed out. It seems all the stream apps merely mirror what is on your PC monitor to your TV. If the PC monitor is not HDR capable then it can't stream HDR to the TV.

Why are you using the dongle? Just pair using bluetooth. You say "I have done this" then immediately revealed that you have not, in fact, done this.

Sorry wasn't tediously clear enough......... yes I have Updated to enable BT and have paired with Shield, it's not detected,
I have used dongle, that's a no go, I have used USB cord also same result,, then I said for sh8ts and giggles let me DL the Stem Link App in the Play Store to see if it can detect the controller and it does detect the controller connected through BT, but not in Steam Link in GFN, and just to show how much I tried i even rolled back the firmware and tried with the USB cord & then with dongle but of coarse not with BT because I just rolled back and disabled it, also made sure my steam client app was updated, made sure I had beta participation ticked, made sure Big picture mode was enabled even did a restart of steam link in GFN to check, then a complete power shut down of shield and checked but nope.
Through all of this I did learn when you check beta option in Steam link in GFN after restart beta update is enabled, but if you exit it's like you never did it, but that is not the same when using the steam link in play store i would use it that way but it lags to much cause its using my PC to stream the game. So if you can be more helpful then trying to come off like a English teacher this would not only benefit me but a lot of other people who have posted about this.

So it does work. The Steam Link app is the only way to use the Steam Controller. That was stated multiple times in this thread.

Steam via Gamestream or GeForce Now is not the Steam Link app.

Ok clearly you have a problem, because something is stopping you from understanding what is being said here.
No I do not want to use the Steam link App in the Play Store on my Nvidia Shield Tv, nor does anyone else who was Intrested in getting the configured game streaming packaged device, the point of buying it was that the consumer would be able to play whatever directly and not bogged down with multiple devices working together to allow game play,,, so kind sir what I would like to do is actually use the Shield as it was intended and reep the benefits of how it was introduced market, I would like for you not to be sidetracked by your “red correction pen” and maybe help me ask some inquisitive questions as to why or what is the difference
In the way that the 2 Steam Link Apps behave differently when detecting controllers.........

ouh ouh (hand raised)....

maybe it’s some line of code that has Steam Link App sandboxed inside of GFN that’s not allowing it to detect what is being plugged into the USB ports or IR signals broadcasted, an the other standalone Steam Link App that’s in the Play Store, which is meant to bring the Steam experience to other Android devices semi works detecting controller but plays poorly over network,,, maybe in the development code is the answer,,, thanks Timmy..
Anyway please help if u have some real fix
And not sitting on forums criticizing, and misinterpreting what is being posted.

I own a Shield TV specifically because it was one of the best ways to stream content from my own PC to my TV. I wrote a fairly extensive post about my experience with it not long ago.

Also, the Steam app in GeForce Now[i.imgur.com] is definitely not named Steam Link, and is not just a repackaging of the Android Steam Link app, despite you continuing to call it that.
Does anyone know whether steam link app in nvidia shield has FULL SUPPORT on the Steam controller? I am particularly interested to know whether both trackpads and gyro work.

I assume in this case you mean the new controller, not the OG controller from a decade ago (which this thread was originally about).

So: yes, the Steam Link app on Android supports the new Controller fully, and will forward trackpads, gyro, back buttons, and grip. It will do so over both Bluetooth and wired (e.g. you can plug the puck into the Shield via USB and use the low-latency wireless rather than Bluetooth if you prefer).

(There were some initial issues with the Android support at launch, but they all got squashed.)

If you want to leave the puck on a PC and use Bluetooth with the Shield, just remember to hold either shoulder bumper and B when powering on to start it in Bluetooth mode, and left bumper + A when powering on to switch back to puck mode. (Right bumper + A when powering on will switch to the second puck pairing, since it can be paired to two pucks.)
