Steam Link

Steam Link

New issue: No audio
Hey all,

So I've been using my steam link for years. No recent changes in PC, TV, etc. All of a sudden, there's no audio when I'm streaming my steam link. I confirmed that sounds still occur when I switch the output to my headset. My TV still produces audio while watching TV for example.

The steam link still makes the beep sounds when connecting to my PC, but once I connect there are no sounds at all. Doesn't matter if I'm in game or not. Usually I can minimize the steam interface and play Spotify out my TV; not now. The volume mixer confirms sound is playing, and the speakers "show" sound playing, but none actually comes out.

I've tried restarting my PC and my steam link multiple times to no avail.

Any advice?

I have exactly the same issue. I have audio on my steam link menus, I have audio on my host pc audio device, I do NOT have audio streaming to my steam link.

Like OP, the host 'shows' sound is playing, but it isn't being streamed.

I've tried:

- changing audio devices back & forth
- power cycling TV/host pc/steam link
- uninstalling & reinstalling steam streaming audio devices
- changing default audio devices back & forth
- changing steam/steam link/host pc audio settings
- changing HDMI

I did prior to the issue to cause any different behaviour so I'm assuming it's some sort of update that has caused this - frustrating but at least we're in solidarity haha!

Edit: Additionally, I use mine every night, and I first noticed this yesterday evening (~24hrs ago) - I was streaming perfectly on Friday afternoon

Edit 2: Found this potential fix in the pinned thread posted by Rock:

"The fix for me was:

In Steam (not Link) -> Settings -> Remote Play -> Play Audio on Host (should be toggled on)"

Give that a go & see, I'll do the same! Good luck!

Edit 3: Yep, I've switched that & can confirm it's working for me - you will have to enable the advanced options within that remote play area in your host pc's steam settings & the "Play Audio on Host" option should appear.

Make sure it's toggled on & you should be golden! Thanks all! & Rock hahah!

Just tried mine today and have the same problem.
So just want to follow this tread just in case there is a solution.

This had happened once before, but it was fixed by reconnecting. I use mine every week so something has happened recently. Steam update messed with it perhaps?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Thankfully it's not just me. Same here. Only thing I did was install lastest Nvidia drivers. I don't install the Nvidia drivers and I disabled the device as well. I hear sound in the menu but not in any game. I was able to hear the test sound after I enabled "play audio on host" but once in a game, it stopped again.

Edit: had to reselect the steam streaming device from fullscreen, didn't auto change.
I'm experiencing the exact same issue, and it happened after i rebooted my PC today (I guess there has been a steam update or something inbetween, since it worked last night).

I came to the same conclusions, I have to "Play sound on host" active, then the sound will play both on my PC and on my TV. If I disable it, it will not play at all, and the source will correctly change to "steam streaming speakers" (which doesn't currently work).

I tried uninstalling the drivers, unpairing, rebooting, I even tried it on my phone for the first time, and the results were exactly the same. There must've been some wackyness going on in a recent update. I hope this will be noticed so it can be fixed.

Cheers!
are steam streaming speakers listed in audio devices?

disable all other unused audio devices

also check windows mixer volumes, make sure steam client/bootstrapper volume is maxed
I am having a similar issue, but the toggle is checked and the steam speaker is enabled. To clarify, audio is working for the steam menu when linked as well as for games. It just has no sound when trying to do anything else.
on host, is steam set to run as admin?

on host, in windows mixer, make sure steam client/bootstrapper volume is maxed
I suddenly have this problem. Sound is fine in the Link menus but goes away once I start streaming.

I tried toggling the option to play audio on the host, but that just causes audio to play on the host, which I don't want. I want the audio from the TV where I'm playing like it's always been.

I checked the volume mixer and the Steam Client and Steam were both normal.
Yeah I just got this problem again after Windows 10 did an update last night. I might try upgrading to Windows 11 and see if that fixes it? Idk.

I'm having the same issue started today

Glad it's not just me let us know if that fixes it I would rather not update to 11 if I don't have too

Same
Yep, updated windows 10 and audio suddenly stopped working, i've tried almost everything i saw online, even contacted support and they just shrugged too
Same!
Issue started coming up for me out of nowhere as well.

I've power cycled all devices, un-and-re-installed Steam Speaker/Microphone drivers, Enabled Host audio, and...none of it has worked. Steam Link has ambient noise in menu so it's not a speaker issue...and the Steam Link DOES stream audio...from my housemate's computer....but specifically from mine there is none.
It worked just fine yesterday and somewhere between 2AM and 10AM on 10\16 it doesn't work anymore.
