Steam Link

Wake on LAN
I apologize if this has been requested somewhere else, or is already possible and I just don't know about it (I've searched all over my settings and don't see an option).

This is a setting that I couldn't imagine would be hard to implement, and would be a huge quality of life improvement that actually makes the Steam Link feel more like having a PC in your living room.

For those not aware of what WOL (wake on LAN) is, it's a feature that most PC's have (you can find a plethora of guides and tutorials online for how to enable it) that allows you to remotely turn on your PC by sending a magic packet over the Internet. Sounds like a perfect fit for the Steam Link in my opinion! Of course until there is (or ever will be) an official implementation by Valve, there are work arounds such as downloading a third party app to your phone to send the magic packet. However, there seems to be an increasing number of these work-arounds that I find myself using to get the Steam Link to work as I think it should. Would be nice if Valve made these features supported natively within the Steam Link!

The Link sends the magic packet to wake the target PC. Works fine for me.
What link? What do I need to get this working across the internet from my iPad?
wol only works on local network

you will need a second device to wake the host from a remote location
a pi or tablet or phone or another pc, so you can send a command to that to wake the host pc

link hardware can send magicpacket to wake the host if wol is enabled on the host pc and both are on the same local network
This thread is from 2015 and is about the Steam Link hardware that was discontinued in 2018 (look it up), I'm not sure it needed to be woken up for an iPad question.

Thank goodness Wake-on-LAN over the Internet is not really a thing (although it is technically possible). The feature would be practically useless.

The L in LAN means Local.
As everyone said it only works on local network, but there is always a solution, I wanted to bring my steamlink with me and connect whereever i am.

To do this 1. Installed Tailscale on the userspace on the steamlink. 2. Installed tailscale on always on devices at home for me its our router Flint2 but you can use an old android phone and install tailscale on it too.

3. Make a scripts that when the steamlink is started it triggers the script which sends a message through tailscale to the device in the same network as your pc and your device in that network will send the Wake-on LAN and your pc will start.
