Mewgenics controller support broken with 916/915
PS5 controllers. Also tested on a custom-built fight stick based on PS3 controller hardware. I unfortunately do not have other brands of controllers to test.

The most recent update broke controller support for Mewgenics. It worked fine on release and through yesterday, but today when I turned on the Steam Link I got a software update and my controllers are no longer functioning in game. I tested a couple other games (Rogue Trader, Absolum) and they're fine. Navigating Steam is fine. I was on beta firmware, but I rolled back and tested public as well - it is also busted. Mewgenics works with the controllers when I'm at my computer, and I can launch games through the Steam Link with the controllers, but once Mewgenics loads it stops recognizing input other than the PS (home) button.

Please un-♥♥♥♥ this.

Just to double-check -- you're streaming Mewgenics from a Windows box, yes? Not, for instance, running it under Proton on a Linux box. (Just for purposes of trying to reproduce this.)

In addition, if you can snag the logs\streaming_log.txt file from under your Steam install and throw it up on Pastebin or somewhere similar... I'm not necessarily *expecting* there'll be anything useful in there, but on the off-chance there *is* it wouldn't hurt to have.
As a further data point, if you roll back to 910, does the controller work again?

If you don't know how to roll back to a specific build, there's a support article that's got you covered at https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/3F04-3833-414D-454C
Also: the reason I ask for more data is that we (Slouken and I) can't seem to reproduce the issue here under 916 using a DualSense (both wired and Bluetooth).
Ahh I forgot to specify that - yes I am running Steam on Linux (Mewgenics is running in whatever default Proton)

I spent a significant amount of time fussing with it earlier before I had to just put it away. Next plan was to try rolling it back and failing that fussing with compatibility versions. I'll grab those logs as well when I do.
I'll definitely be curious if changing the Proton version to Experimental or Glorious Eggroll changes anything. I *suspect* that rolling the Steam Link firmware back to 910 will *not* actually fix anything, but it doesn't hurt to try.

To elaborate slightly: when you've got the controller connected to the desktop version of Steam, it's using the controller as an actual Dual Sense. When you're *streaming*, the controller is exposed as a sort of general universal SDL-powered controller.

The fact that the controller *works* to control Big Picture (and other games) means Steam is getting what it expects from the controller, hence why my guess is that it's probably down to the Proton version.

Since Mewgenics *just* released, I would be shocked if they haven't had a couple of small hotfixes. My *theory* is that some combination of a change in the game and the version of Proton you are using causes the input as exposed by Steam to fail to register, and that the update from 910 to 916 on the Steam Link side was coincidental timing.
Yeah, I get all of that - I've just had multiple experiences in the past with Steam updates flipping switches and breaking various things, esp since I've got a non-standard setup. I definitely should've started with Proton compatibility versions.

Forcing Proton 9.0-4 fixed it, so I guess that's how it is for now. Thanks for the recommendation.

edit: 9.0-4 has incorrect button glyphs, and if the controller turns off while playing (battery, idle, whatever) when turned back on will not reconnect to a running game session (must close and restart Mewgenics). This is hit-and-miss across my entire Steam library, so while it's not exactly new it's definitely annoying that this was working on launch.

Experimental did *not* work when I tried it first, but after trying 9.0-4 then switching back it's now working. Hotfix works. Both have correct glyphs and will correctly connect a controller to a running session. Hotfix ~might have some stutter.

Disabling "force Proton version" is 100% busted, despite this being the default that worked out of the box for exactly one day when Mewgenics launched.
Okay that... I kinda didn't want to be right, because that feels unpleasantly fragile to me.

The fact that you say it didn't work with Experimental, but then when you switched to 9.0-4 and back it *did*, makes me think maybe there's something in the compatdata directory that's changed under 9.0-4.

We're getting a bit outside of what really falls directly under *Steam Link* here, but for the sake of data collection... could you back up ~/.steam/steam/compatdata/686060 somewhere (zip/tarball it, rename it, whatever) so that you can put it back later if needed... then blow that directory away and try with Experimental again?

(686060 is the appid for Mewgenics; that directory contains the Proton configuration -- and the actual bottle -- for the game.)
Works fine as default (no forced version) and as experimental after clearing the compatdata directory (did it fresh for both tests). Yeah idk there might've been a Mewgenics hotfix that I didn't see that broke things.

Copied my save over. I'll hang onto the backed-up directory in case there's anything else you want from it.
Nah, go ahead and get rid of the backup.

Glad it's working for you now, though!
