Official Xbox wireless adaptor for windows

Greetings, I was trying to play some local multiplayer with Split Fiction and ran into an issue where using the Xbox wireless dongle was causing frequent disconnects when using multiple controllers. Additionally when reconnecting for the first time player 1 and 2 would swap; and disconnections would continue.

I was able to get around this by pairing the series x directly using bluetooth and hardwiring the elite controller. The wireless adapter works fine with just one controller paired.

can you post the usb pid/vid of the adapter?
and models of the controllers
FWIW, I've had issues (including on Windows) with some of the third-party Xbox wireless dongles; if this isn't the actual Microsoft one, that might be the issue. So the request in the comment above this one is very relevant, as it'll help narrow down what that dongle actually *is*...
It's OEM, was purchased from Microsoft as stated, models of the controllers are in the comment as well

USB\VID_045E&PID_02E6\000000000
Hm, so that's the original first-generation dongle, a.k.a. the model 1713. (And I am moderately distressed to realize that I recognize the product ID without having to look it up. This says bad things about how much time I've spent enumerating USB devices over the course of my adult life...)

ANYWAY. That's supposed to support up to 8 controllers at once, though I know folks (including me) have had trouble with 3 or more controllers even on Windows in some RF-noisy environments. I don't remember offhand ever hearing of it having issues with only two, though I suppose I wouldn't be entirely shocked if it behaved badly even with that few in a noisy RF environment.

I guess my next questions would be:

1. When you say "disconnects" I assume you mean the controllers are disconnecting, not the stream itself is disconnecting.
2. Does this happen in other games, or just Split Fiction? (I would assume it happens in other games, but it's always worth asking...)
3. Did this happen with earlier versions of the Steam Link firmware? (Or "does it go away if you roll back to an earlier firmware image?")
Just the controllers are disconnecting, for a split second it seems as if they are being seen as one controller.

Interestingly when connected to my deskop it shows up as a xbox one wireless controller, when connected to my laptop it shows as the xbox wireless adapter in device manager. This is probably MS driver related. I'll have to do some more testing when I have time.
So, since drivers have been mentioned... you have the dongle connected to the *Steam Link* hardware, correct? Are you using VirtualHere to forward the dongle USB to Windows, or no?

If you *aren't* using VirtualHere to forward the USB device itself directly, then the dongle is actually being used by the *Linux* xpad driver; Steam Link is parsing the controller input via that and then packaging it up to send to the host machine as generic representations of game controllers; the controller drivers on the host machine shouldn't matter.

If you *are* forwarding the dongle via VirtualHere, though, the drivers on the host machine will be very relevant.

So if you aren't forwarding the dongle, I'd be curious if you see the same issue connecting the Elite 2 controllers via Bluetooth, just for purposes of "I like to have data." I suspect you will not.

Beyond that, if you can get the streaming log for an affected session, I'd be *very* curious to see what messages are being recorded for controller connect/disconnect/enumeration. It SHOULD be recorded in the logs\streaming_log.txt on the host machine, or if you have access via SSH to the Steam Link box, then /mnt/scratch/log/S99steam will have all the data that would be sent (plus some extra).
