Only works when host PC's display is on *solved*
Whenever the host PC's display is off and I try to connect to it, I'm shown a static image of the whole desktop. Whether I use the host's input devices or the remote device, the image stays frozen.
However, once I turn the display on, everything works just fine.

I assume the problem is that the system doesn't continuously render anything because there's no display attached. The host is running Arch with the Cinnamon desktop, if that matters.

EDIT:
I tried using the xorg dummy driver, which works but without any hardware acceleration.

What output is the host using? You might try a "dumber" video output that can't tell the host whether it's on or off.

It's DisplayPort. My GPU has DVI ports, thought I'm not entirely sure if they support VGA. If they do, I could do that resistor hack, but this is only a temporary solution since I intend to upgrade my GPU this year.
You could try some powered signal converters, I have a setup that lets me go all the way down to coax output and I know that can't talk back. Somewhere along the way one of the converters must be sending the ON signal.

Hmm I thought I responded to this but I forgot to press send.

Somehow, I didn't think to buy an HDMI dummy plug. You're right - they are cheap, and it's a good long-term platform-agnostic solution. I found one that supports 4K for $5.50. I'm sure I can just configure my DE to clone my primary display.

Thanks for the idea - I'm sure we can consider this solved.
