Steam Link

No sound on Nvidia Shield
Been using Steam Link for awhile and everything has worked great up until the most recent update. All of a sudden I now get no sound from the app (even before I connect to my computer through it) on my Nvidia Shield TV but it works just fine through my phone.

I can confirm no audio in the shield. Since I haven't used it in a while I can't single out the update but it is exactly as described. No sound even before connecting.
I have the same issue - no sound from the Steam Link app on Nvidia Shield. App sounds in the Link app are also not playing. The default audio device is being switched to the Streaming Speakers properly. Rebooting both devices didn't fix it. Audio when streaming through Gamestream continues to work.
Same issue here on the android TV app as well, latest update has killed the sound off.
got a shield too and i also have no sound. like a week ago i played forager via steam link on the shield and everything worked fine. i already considered that my windows was broken.
so bad i had friends come to my play yesterday and everything went downhill because i tried to look for the problem and tried to fix it. :(:steamsad:
Hey guys, so - since the last update my 5.1 audio to my shield is also broken. Works before very nice and out of the box.... Everything i did was the update, after that - silence. I've noticed setting the app to stream only "stereo" seems to work, but its not 5.1 :(

Very strange: as Durtro already meantioned: With gamestream and moonlight audio capture still works, even for 5.1 surround sound without any problems. But i can't play there because the controllers are not found as "Steam Controllers", so that makes no sense.

I've tried to look in the logs for possible errors and found only one, which could be related:

[Edit: Added new log from nvidia shield connect with more details]
it works with stereo at least for me but not with 5.1 on nvidia shield:

Once i set to 5.1 in app:

CLIENT: Couldn't open audio device: format=2, channels=6, frequency=48000. Audio is disabled: Open device failed!

Once i set to 2 speakers it works fine

Yes, this will be fixed in the next build. Thanks!
Yes i can confirm same issue here. No sound on 5.1. Was working fine, I switched to Stereo and it is now working. Can we please get a fix for this ASAP!!
wow. are YOU for REAL.

So i just spent 2 days being short with my wife and kids. Going up and down my stairs a dozen times in a row.. all trying to find out why I get no 5.1 audio.

I thought "hmm maybe its my shield" so i messed with a buncha shield stuff.

Then i thought "hmm maybe its my pc" so i messed with a buncha pc stuff.

Knowing I had 5.1 fine before, i also recently changed from an actual steam link to the steam link app on the shield so I wasnt sure.

Now i know.

Like anyone else I get audio using stereo, but if i try surround - no sound. Oddly enough my receiver thinks its getting 2.0pcm now no matter what I set it as. Streaming log also says 2 channels.

Is it the steam link app thats broke, or the steam client? Assume the latter?

Whelp, time to revert everything under the sun I messed with and wait for the fix.
Can also confirm this is the same thing is happening to the steam link app on android tv's. No audio when using 5.1 surround, only through stereo on the app settings.
saw a steam update go out last night, with no mention of a fix - so i assume this is related to the steam link app on the shield itself?
Any fix for this? I have no sound even when set to stereo on the client (2019 Nvidia Shield)... I have sound on Steam Link app on Android phone, so don't think it's anything wrong with host settings.

Edit: It's a bug with the 1.1.47 version. 1.1.45 works fine.
this is happening for me too, how do I roll back to previous version?

EDIT Update 1.1.48 fixed the problem, thank you valve! the cause of, and solution to, all of steams problems.
We're looking into this, thanks!
