Yes, try this:

STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME="${XDG_DATA_HOME:-$HOME/.local/share}"/SteamLink
echo "file://$STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME" >"$STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME/update_url"
echo "http://media.steampowered.com/steamlink/rpi/steamlink-rpi3-1.1.39.91.tar.gz" >"$STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME/public_build.txt"

Then run steamlink once to update to that build, and then thereafter, run:
steamlink --skip-update

I haven't tried this, so let me know how it works! :)
After this release was automatically installed my PS3 controller (unbranded, not sure if that's a factor) started misbehaving while playing some (not all) games.

On both AC Odyssey and AC Origins the game character draws a bow whenever not running, map navigation is hard/impossible and using the in-game menu options is very hard as it just reverts to the map after 1-2 seconds.

Turning off the controller stopped this behavior. I rolled back the steamclient to the previous version (thanks to the instructions in this thread) and that fixed it.

What is the VID/PID of your PS3 controller?

thanks, I'll let you know how it works.

edit 1: that worked for for installing the prior version 1.1.39, verified under the file ".version" in the SteamLink directory. I copied and modified the contents of the desktop shortcut adding the --skip-update to the exec line and changing the shortcut name to include the version number. it launches without updating fine. I'll run a game for an hour or so and see if it's any smoother and update this post.

edit 2: it seemed smoother, though still a bit jittery. I tried the streaming_args.txt set at "--framerate 60" (seemed worse), so I tried setting that at 59.9 which seemed better. still, not as smooth as I remember or as the hardware link. updating to the current version now to see if it's worse or the same. very difficult to tell as there is no packet or frames loss in the performance overlay.

edit 3: it is noticeably worse to me in version 1.1.44, with or without the streaming_args.txt file. the only thing I have outside of the 'stock' installation is using the 5.1 PCM audio method here https://steamcommunity.com/app/353380/discussions/6/1743353164095764346/ ... since some of the recent changes to the app were audio specific, I'll set it back to default and check.

edit 4: no difference using the pi's default audio settings, aside from no true pcm 5.1 surround (upmixed dolby prologic isn't good).

1.1.39 definitely has less stutter than the current version, but still not as smooth as it was. looks like it may be a combination of Buster updates, the app updates, or even the steam client updates as the network test used to get 50 Mbits without issue and now it craps out at 35 Mbits on all versions.

thanks again for the info on setting a specific version. is there a viewable list of versions with the full version numbers and/or download links for future reference?

Here are the versions available:

Can you post a link to the streaming log in the Steam logs folder on your computer? It seems odd that you're only getting 50 and now 35 Mbit on a wired network.

How do you want me to set the app/streaming up, on automatic? I currently have it set to 30 Mbits since the test won't get above 35. I'm not sure how to record the test, aside from a video using my tablet. Does the streaming log capture the test? Oh, I am also using the 1.1.39 version at the moment, do you want me to change that to the current version?

I have also rebooted my router, PC, the pi and still get the 35 Mbit max in the test on automatic. A ping test from the pi to the PC shows no loss and 0.52 ms average for 25 packets.

Yep, on automatic. Can you post your streaming log?

I'm running a clean log for you, I also have saved the log from when I was doing the testing above if you want that one too.

I ran the test on automatic, then unlimited, then at 50 Mbits. There are 3 lines in the clean streaming log "Setting target bitrate to 15000 Kbit/s, burst bitrate is 75000 Kbit/s", however, the automatic and unlimited both stopped at 35 Mbits, but the 50 Mbit completed with a "Great, it should work well" message. Let me game on the clean log for 30 minutes or so, then I'll post it and the one from the testing IF you want that one too.

https://pastebin.com/xGEaZRRy -- from the testing above

And thanks for the list of versions too.

Yeah, that log looks great. I don't see any reason why it would have a problem at higher bitrates. What happens if you set the bandwidth to 50 Mbit manually?

What is the VID/PID of your PS3 controller?

It identifies as the original Sony PS3 Controller with: 054c:0268

Thanks for looking into this.
Just came here to report that I also have issues with PS3 controller in AC origins / odyssey exactly as described by paul.

Also using an official PS3 Controller.

I believe this is fixed in the next Steam client beta update.

Thanks!

I don't mean to sound ungrateful but it's taken you 3 months to finally fix this, in the interim my input method of choice was largely unusable, so I found an alternative method to stream my inputs and no longer use steam link app. It was fun while it lasted but if you're gonna force updates and break ♥♥♥♥ all the time I don't want to be a part of that. I know you're all hotshot rockstars at valve but a bit of boring quality control would go a long way.
