Steam Link

Steam Link

Microstutter. Approx 59.7x FPS in everything. (Video, Log)
Edit: A possible fix was mentioned by the lead dev:

"This is intentional, to let video frames drain when more than one gets queued because of a network hiccough."

"However, if you want to override it and experiment with different framerates, you can add the following line to the file."

~/.local/share/Valve Corporation/SteamLink/streaming_args.txt
--framerate 60

=========================================

Popped on the performance graph on the SteamLink and realized I wasn't crazy. I feel like the games have never felt quite as smooth as they did on the real hardware SteamLink. Turns out I'm having constant jitter. The FPS reading on the Link app itself shows it always bumping around from 57.00 to 60.8 erratically, but often averages about 59.75. Ideally it should be very steady at 59.94 for a 60hz TV.

Anything I can do or does this app need more work?

This is running on a Raspberry Pi 3b RetroPie setup.

I made a video of the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYx0hYBDms0

I captured a log of starting the steamlink connection. I noticed the "effective rate: 59.75":

pi@retropie:~ $ steamlink

I dont know much about this stuff. Just learning myself. I know it was stated to use the raspbian stretch build.

Hope that helps. I have yet to try the app myself. Just got my pi3 put together and updated.
4.4 stretch here. Very recent retropie install. Nothing should be running in the background to cause performance issues. I suppose I could try killing emulation station and running SteamLink from boot.
Good to prove myself right in that i have no idea what i am doing and what not. Hope it works!
So here's a screenshot of the log after just running the Big Picture Mode for a few seconds. Even that screen has the frame rate dropping to about 58.1 at times, so hopefully this log can explain something. Still eager for help. This is SteamLink being run directly from boot by the way. No RetroPie Emulation Station or anything else running.

Wish i could help and it is a shame that the only one posting on here to help is me who knows way less than you. Just a thought though, would formating your sd card and reinstalling the app be an option?

Some times i know that has helped with harddrives etc. And it wouldnt take long. Also when you flashed the card did you use recommended software and follow the instructions. I do assume you did. But i had to do it 3 times as i did not lol.

This was a very fresh format of the retropie image, so I doubt that's the issue.
What GPU do you have? If applicable disable Freesync/G-Sync and Radeon Chill.

1070TI. And that's a negative. It does not have an impact on the steamlink performance.
I made a video showing the frame rate averaging 59.70, and thus, always having a jitter in the motion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYx0hYBDms0
I pulled out the old hardware SteamLink to use and its definitely running much closer to 59.94 fps, and thus, less perceived stutter, although about 10ms more latency than Pi, which is fine. I just wish I had an extra HDMI port, but I dont. I really need the Pi to perform equally.

It's very weird how theres something seemingly hard limiting the frame rate by less than 1% of what it should be...

do you have geforce experience installed with the nvidia drivers? if you don't need it for shield tv/streaming, try uninstalling geforce experience. nvidia's streaming service that's baked into geforce experience causes conflicts with steam's streaming service.
Tried it with and without. Tried NVFBC with it as well. Tried NVIDIA drivers from late 2017. I always used display driver uninstaller to do clean installs. No impact on this 59.7x bug.
I captured and posted a log above, and noticed these two lines:

INFO: Refresh rate: 60.00
INFO: Effective rate: 59.75

no option in the app to set refresh rate ... check the pi's and the pc's display settings and make sure the resolutions on both are set for a refresh rate of 60. other than that, the tv may not be a full 60, but they rounded up from 59.7x ... maybe try setting the pc to a 59 refresh rate and see if that smooths the micro stutter.
Pi's settings are all correct as far as I can tell. There's no way to set it's HDMI refresh rate anywhere besides the common 60, 50, 24, etc marks. The TV can definitely do true 60hz, as I used it as my only computer display for years before getting a g-sync monitor. I've already tried setting the PC to various refresh rates prior to streaming. No impact.

try disabling gsync while streaming, the link disables vsync for streaming and gsync may cause issues.
That was one of the first things I tried. Trust me, I have tried every single possible option in NVIDIA that could be related to an issue like this. Maybe there's something I could try via NVIDIA inspector tool, but since this issue doesn't exist with the hardware SteamLink, I highly doubt the issue can be fixed with anything on the PC end. The issue has to be within the RaspPi app.
I'm experiencing the same issue. Stutting every few seconds. Especially noticable in The Witness. Everything smooth on the host end.
