Raspberry Pi 4 Extreme 8GB Steam Link Issue
Hello! bare with me as my tired eyes try to explain this scenario.

So, I've been on google/youtube/reddit for almost 40 hours. I've found the easy code for putting steamlink on Rpi4, super simple. YouTubers made this look mint. Quick, painless, done. I'm also on the Oct 30th Raspberry OS version. SO! that being said, sudo apt update, sudo apt install steamlink. Got it, those are worked fine.

But! When I launch the steamlink, I get this error saying ""dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d in /boot/config.txt, which will cause a black screen when starting streaming. aborting. Try commenting out that line and rebooting"

I have "tried" commenting out that line, many many times. Nothing. It still will not launch. I've probably commented out that line incorrectly, but, how I did it was in "sudo nano /boot/config.txt, found the # line and just CRTL+SHIFT+K and got rid of the line. But nothing..

Anyone have a fix for this? Or a better OS that works for Steamlink? My OG steamlink died for good so I bought this hoping to replicate this again. I'm SUPER lost, super tired. Thanks for reading, I hope this made sense :(

After the OS install, I updated all packages when prompted by GUI upon first login, installed steamlink via terminal 'sudo apt install steamlink', manually rebooted (I would get a new error without this reboot), then it worked.

as for OS, I'm still using the buster version of raspberry OS.

I'm in the config right now, I see nothing in here about setting the graphic to legacy.

must be different on the pi 4B then, haven't felt the need to upgrade yet since I'm only on a 1080p tv still. I'm sure someone with a 4B will jump in to help you though.

just to be sure, it's under 'Advanced Options' then 'GL Driver', at least for my 3B+.

I really appreciate your input my friend.
Try the following command in the terminal:
echo beta >~/.local/share/SteamLink/.update_branch

This should switch Steam Link to using beta builds.

I will try this and report back my findings. Thank you my friend.

*edit* It worked.. I cannot thank you enough. Thank you. Not to mention, this will help someone else eventually too. I owe you a lot.

While we're at it, will my series xbox controller pair with this on a dongle no problem? Or do I need a code for that as well?
Good to hear. I don't know about the series xbox controller via dongle... I have one as well and am trying to figure it out.

You've already been an incredible help, if you happen to remember this thread with any findings to that, i'll be here. Thank you again.

Hi,
bit late to the party here but if you use a driver called xow[github.com] you should be able to get it working (at least with the first party dongle)

installing on fresh buster run the following commands in a terminal of your choice:
sudo apt update sudo apt intsall curl cabextract libusb-1.0-0-dev systemd git clone https://github.com/medusalix/xow cd xow make BUILD=RELEASE sudo make install sudo systemctl enable xow sudo systemctl start xow
and then reboot and you should be good to go

I will try this Asap buddy thank you. This is gonna sound like an even dumber question, but in order to make those lines in a gap, is there a certain key I type to do that? or probably just copy and paste it as you put it? Im super new to this coding thing.
The hyphen/minus/underscore key. Usually next to the addition/equals key on the number row or the addition key on the numpad.
I bought an rpi 4B 4GB specifically for Steam Link and have run into the same problem as the OP. It seemed from the above conversation that the fix was an either/or choice between "update to SL beta branch" and "downgrade to Buster." I did the former because it seemed like it would be easier, but that just introduced a new complication:

"X11 is not supported on this version of Raspbian. You can run on the console or downgrade to Raspberry Pi Buster."

So, ... explain like I'm 5. How do I downgrade from Bullseye to Buster? I assume that one option involves turning the rpi off, removing the SD card, loading the image linked above onto the SD from my PC, and putting the SD back in the rpi. Right now, I'm downloading the image to my PC for that purpose, but I don't know how it'll work after that last step (or if this assumption is wrong at any point).

I just want to reach the point where I can turn the rpi on, switch to the right HDMI feed, see Big Picture's GUI, grab my controller, and start playing whatever I feel like.
If you install Buster, run the below command in the terminal and Steam Link will be installed. When you run Steam Link it will update to the latest stable release. The latest stable version works for Buster.
sudo apt install steamlink
If you don't want to downgrade and stick with Bullseye, type the below command in the terminal and look for the option that sets the pi to boot to console. I think it's under system options.
sudo raspi-config
Good luck, I'm off to bed now.

So I tried that...
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ steamlink You are running with less than 128 MB video memory, you may need to go to the Raspberry Pi Configuration and increase your GPU memory. Press enter to continue: Could not initialize egl display /home/pi/.local/share/SteamLink/steamlink.sh: line 185: 1028 Aborted LD_PRELOAD=$QT_QPA_EGLFS_PRELOAD shell "$@"
raises GPU memory from 64 to 256
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ steamlink Could not initialize egl display /home/pi/.local/share/SteamLink/steamlink.sh: line 185: 946 Aborted LD_PRELOAD=$QT_QPA_EGLFS_PRELOAD shell "$@"
...and it didn't work.

What are the precise steps for replacing Bullseye with Buster, from "Buster download finishes and the image is loaded from my PC to the SD card" to "Buster is successfully installed on the rpi"? I'm about a dozen layers deep into "Oh come on. What now?" and want to make sure I get this absolutely right so it finally works for the first time. I haven't even been able to find out if the rpi's connection to the TV will daisy-chain to the sound bar! (And, at this rate, fully expect the answer to be yet another "On come on. What now?")

Do I even need to mess around with the SD card? Can I install Buster from my PC through PuTTY? I only have one working USB keyboard and appreciate not needing to move it back and forth.

do you have an sd card reader on the pc or an sd to usb adapter? if so, you download the .zip file from the link in the 'answer post' and use the raspberry pi imager https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/ to install buster on the sd card.
So that's where my confusion came from. I was thinking in terms of "the sd card is a boot device for the OS to be installed on the rpi," not "the OS is installed on the sd card and merely plugged into the rpi."

It works now, including sound. I just need to look up how to use this wireless xbone S controller as a wireless controller, because M$'s strange hieroglyphics are no substitute for clear text.
