About Smart Bidding learning

"Learning" status is an indicator in your Google Ads account that signals recent structural changes to a campaign or bid strategy. While you may see a "Learning" status in your account for up to 7 days, your ads continue to run and serve as normal.

Smart Bidding continuously optimizes and learns in the background using historical and new conversion data. Updates to budgets, ROI targets, or targeting settings take effect in the next auction, but never trigger “Learning” status. Modifying your creatives never removes your historical data or triggers a “Learning” status, however new or edited creatives must pass standard policy reviews before they can serve. Smart Bidding performance will adjust to new inputs and settings over the course of your conversion cycle.

For example, if you change your bid strategy target from 500% to 400%, Target ROAS will immediately use your new target to optimize bids, and the strategy’s performance will converge towards the new target over the course of your conversion cycle, but you will not see “Learning” status appear.

What is the “Learning” status?

Learning status is a helpful reminder in your Google Ads account that your campaign configuration has recently changed. It never lasts more than 7 days. You can determine whether your campaign is still learning by consulting its bid status. Learn more about bid strategy statuses.

Note: Bid strategy statuses aren't available with Hotel campaigns.

What causes “Learning” status?

Learning status will show when you make major structural changes. Consult the “Learning” bid status, and hover over to know which of the following 3 reasons explains why your bid strategy currently has a "Learning" status.

  • New strategy: The bid strategy was recently created or reactivated. Google Ads is now adjusting to optimize your bids.
  • Composition change: Campaigns, ad groups, or keywords have been added to or removed from the bid strategy. Google Ads is now adjusting to optimize your bids.
  • Goal Change: The conversion goals or actions you are optimizing to have significantly changed.
Note: Changes to budgets, targets, creatives, or targeting settings (such as location or audience) never remove your historical data or trigger “Learning” status.

What happens to your campaign while you’re in “Learning” status?

Your campaign runs as normal during "Learning" status. It enters auctions and competes, and your ads continue to serve without interruption. Smart Bidding optimizes toward your goals using all available account data. Learning status never lasts more than 7 days.

Keep in mind that new campaigns or bid strategies lacking historical data may experience temporary performance fluctuations as Smart Bidding ramps up. Performance will stabilize as conversion data matures over your conversion cycle.

What to do during “Learning” status and best practices?

To help Smart Bidding adapt efficiently, keep these best practices in mind:

  • Conversion data and consistency: Optimize campaigns to a single, consistent conversion goal designated as the primary account default goal. Use a tag, or send offline conversion data frequently and consistently.
  • Budget availability: Ensure daily budgets are sufficient so the system has room to optimize and capture conversions. Adjusting daily budgets takes effect immediately and allows campaigns to scale without triggering "Learning" status.
  • Campaign structure consolidation: Consolidate ad groups and campaigns where possible to pool conversion data into larger datasets for optimization.
  • Target adjustments: Avoid making multiple target changes within a single conversion cycle unless there is a clear business need. Learn more about how to make target adjustments with Search Smart Bidding.

How does Smart Bidding adapt to changes?

Smart Bidding is always learning; it continuously adapts and optimizes to changes. Smart Bidding learns from ad interactions and conversion data in your account, both new and historical, whether your campaign is in “Learning” status or not.

For example, changes to budgets and targets take effect immediately and adjust auction bids in real time. As a result, these changes don’t trigger a "Learning" status. Remember to account for conversion delay.

Factors that affect performance and time to converge to your goal

While "Learning" status in the UI disappears within 7 days, Smart Bidding performance typically converges to your new goal within 1 to 2 conversion cycles, driven by 3 primary factors:

  • Conversion volume: The number of conversions your campaigns, ad groups, keywords, or products obtain. Conversion data from previous campaigns can also help drive faster results.
  • Conversion cycles: The duration of your conversion cycles, the length of time it takes for a click to result in a conversion.
  • Campaign settings: Very restrictive settings, such as tight targets, low daily budgets, or narrow targeting, can slow down campaign ramp-up.

It can take up to 1 to 2 conversion cycles for performance to stabilize to your new ROI goal, although it can be faster depending on the amount of conversion data present. Conversion data from previous campaigns can help drive faster results by speeding up the initial time required for Smart Bidding to stabilize toward your business goals. Frequently Asked Questions about campaign learning

Does my campaign start from scratch when I switch bid strategies?

No. If you have past conversion data in your account, Smart Bidding never starts from scratch. Even when you launch a new campaign or switch strategies, the system leverages query-level signals, historical conversion patterns, and data from similar past campaigns in your account to build initial bidding models instantly.

Will my secondary metrics improve after a "Learning" status?

No. Smart Bidding optimizes exclusively toward your primary conversion goal. Secondary metrics like clicks, CPC, or click-through rate may fluctuate as the algorithm prioritizes your main objective.

Does applying a portfolio bid strategy trigger a “Learning” status?

Yes. Creating or applying a new portfolio bid strategy is a structural change and can display a "Learning" status for up to 7 days. However, ramp-up should be fast when using existing campaigns with conversion history.

How should I evaluate performance?

The system takes 1–2 conversion cycles to converge to a new goal. Post this period, evaluate performance over 2 conversion cycles or a 2 week window (whichever is longer) accounting for conversion delay. This is because conversions often take several days to come in. User behavior varies, but Smart Bidding should aim to hit the target over a week or longer.
