Look for the Power of Light and Wonder in All Things

No matter what, light always shines through. Our pages in this issue contain bright spots of brilliance and inspiration, as in our cover article based on an interview with Carmen Tapio, founder and CEO of North End Teleservices — the largest African American-owned business in the state of Nebraska. Her dream of creating jobs and changing lives became something that transformed an entire community in north Nebraska. As Tapio states, “… once we began creating jobs, it didn’t take long to figure out that our mission needed to expand beyond job creation to the changing of lives … There is a lot more to the issues that we saw in the community.” And transform they did.

Lisa Miller, a disaster insurance and recovery expert and former deputy insurance commissioner for Florida, looks back at a career of business and shares life lessons gained along the way. She defines success not just by her own achievement but by the positive impact she has made on others, including building meaningful relationships and collaboration, and helping others find solutions to problems. One key to her success, she says, is practicing the art of really listening to others.

Steven Schwartz, Brian Waltermeire, and Nick Lamparelli discuss ways to reduce AI risk for carriers by understanding and getting ahead of the challenges that come with new claims management systems.

Our annual Super Regional P/C InsurersTM feature is a recognition of the accomplishments of companies in the industry, but this year is special as it celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Super Regionals. In appreciation for our company’s classification of insurers, Demotech President Joseph Petrelli said this, “In 2006, Google acquired YouTube, Twitter was launched, Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet, and Demotech launched the first identification of Super Regional insurers. In this 20th anniversary update, Barry Koestler, Chief Ratings Officer, identifies the Super Regionals who, collectively, hold the insurance industry together! Congratulations one and all.”

Columnist Ariel Rivera used the super event of the World Cup in the U.S. to discuss the necessity of protecting, in this case, fans of the event and small businesses from hackers. His discussion of cyber awareness contains universally practical steps to protect personal information and prevent hackers in any situation.

Some fun lookbacks in the magazine include the 250th celebration of the U.S. and summaries of a number of golf championships that were hosted in Columbus, Ohio. And last, but not least, Sharon Dulce wrote suggestions for things to do to enjoy your parents as they age.

Enjoy the sunshine and the summer days and look for the positives every day!

Strength Through the Storm

Strength Through the Storm was a special publication of The Demotech Difference. Given the impact of the extraordinary number of natural disasters in 2017, this special issue recognized the impact of those disasters on the insurance industry and on the nation.

Experts, first responders and leaders from the United States and Puerto Rico shared thoughts on the storms that pounded the nation by discussing how the industry responded. We looked at the effects of the disasters on each state, and we heard from disaster response leadership in areas that were hardest hit. We featured everyday heroes who went above and beyond the call of duty during the emergencies.

Strength Through the Storm is about promises made and promises kept through difficult times and the strength of Demotech-rated carriers that protect our communities.
