Pneumococcal pneumonia is a bacterial lung infection that can come on fast, turn serious, and put you in the hospital. The risk for pneumococcal pneumonia is year-round, and you don’t need a health problem or to feel sick to get it. If you are 50 or older, you may feel the same as you did before 50, but your risk for pneumococcal pneumonia isn't — as we age, our bodies don't fight infections as well, and if you're living with a condition like heart disease or diabetes, a respiratory infection can have even more serious consequences.
50 isn't old, but it is the age you start being over 6 times higher risk for pneumococcal pneumonia than adults under 50.** That’s why getting vaccinated is strongly recommended! Just one dose of a pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine can help protect you as an adult from pneumococcal infection, which can be serious and even lead to hospitalization.
