So I guess that explains why, when we were trying to book hotel rooms in the area they were going for $400-600 and said things like "watch the Head of the Charles from your room." I didn't know what it was but I recall mentioning it to you saying "what up?"
We served pie at our wedding, too. Actually, it was "groom's pie" instead of a groom's cake. Two tips from my pie baker: 1. If serving pie at the end of a formal dinner, try to limit flavors to one or two to avoid looking like a bake sale or church pot-luck; 2. If you pick more than one flavor, don't count on lowered cost because many times your guests will say, "Oh, I'll try a little of each...," and you either run out or feel compelled to order more pie! In any event, we went with cherry and the baker cut my husband's initials as the vents in the top crust... uber cute.
Don't worry about the HofC... Embrace the positive: your out-of-town folks will get to experience a true, Boston fall tradition. Just be thankful that you booked those hotel blocks early!!!
Mom, I don't think you did mention it because I probably would have freaked out and changed the wedding date. Or maybe you did and it was when Jason told me it was the weekend before.
Anon, unfortunately since we didn't start planning until June, there were no blocks of rooms to be had. And now I know why! I kept searching every hotel in the area and no one would let me reserve more than one room. And a lot of the hotels were just full, period. Or were exorbitant.
This isn't something I wanted to realize 1 month before the wedding, but hopefully it won't be too much of a crisis. Most of the guests are local or are familiar with Cambridge. The only ones I'm concerned about are my family.
You could have the pieces pre-cut in the kitchen and brought out and served to each individual OR have the servers ask the guests which piece they would and if they would like it a la mode. Then it would be obvious the choice is of one type of pie and they have to make it. I didn't get the idea that you were setting up a pie buffet that was serve yourself, or am I wrong on that point.
As far as the HOTC is concerned, the folks who are coming and get late Sunday flights out might enjoy going to the Sunday events so it might turn out to be a good thing. :)
