Reagan's First Day of School

Reagan Kindergarten 1

I have so many summer pictures and so many summer stories that I need to share! But, I couldn't let today pass me by without acknowledging Reagan's first day of Kindergarten. She is officially in school all day long now and in three weeks time she will begin wearing a uniform! Gotta love Catholic school! It is amazing to me how outgoing my oldest baby is! She had no problems leaving home this morning. She was up early at 5:45 ( her choice not mine) and we were out the door by 7:15! When I walked her in I met her teacher (she's new this year) and helped her find her seat. I asked her if it was okay for me to leave and she said "Yes mommy,(insert exasperated sigh) just go!" I was almost in tears and she was just ready to start her day. So many firsts for me! My first kindergartner, my first day leaving her all day, my first time packing a school lunch! I hope that she comes home excited and with all sorts of fun expectations for the coming year! When they say that they grow up too fast, they mean it! I know everyone says it but it is SO TRUE! In the blink of an eye she will be in high school! Then that little exasperated sigh of hers will really come in handy!
Here is my post from her first day of school last year! I thought I did a good job this year documenting but after looking @ that I guess I was wrong! Ha, well at least I did document it! It is the thought that counts right?

Reagan, live and in concert

IMG00148

reag @ the Concert

Yep, that's my baby girl belting her heart out @ yesterday's Provident Studio Concert 2009! I am so proud of her... she did so AWESOME! She was the 4th act overall but the first to sing and sing she did! No, it wasn't perfect, but it was the best I've ever heard her do. She sang Castle on a Cloud from Les Miserables and it was just too precious! The rest of the concert was pretty awesome too, they are a really talented group of kids. Reagan had a blast watching the rest of her "singing friends" perform as well as cheering on Aunt Ally(my little sis). The rain held off for a little while and then poured for about 20 minutes right in the middle of the show. We stuck it out and when the rain stopped the show continued on. I am so looking forward to many more concerts and performances and the opportunity to watch my daughter shine! There is nothing like it in the world!

Doesn't she just look adorable?

The Loss of My Wisdom

I am a horrible blogger. I have not posted anything substantial in forever. But, at least this week I have an excuse...

IMG00140

I had my wisdom teeth extracted on Monday. I am not going to lie... it hurt like hell. I am still miserable. The first couple days I was so nauseous I couldn't even keep my limited liquid diet down. Now I am headed back to the dentist this afternoon because I think I might have one dry socket. I have no idea what that means or why they call it that but I am pissed. I did everything I was supposed to do. Yet, I am still in pain and still on so doped up on painkillers that I fell asleep for an hour this morning. Home alone with 3 kids 5 and under and I fell asleep for an hour! Um, hello! I can't be doing that. Maybe along with my wisdom those teeth also contained my common sense! SO, anyway I hope the dentist has answers for me cuz I am ready for this to be over!!!

A Phavorite Photo (and some deep thoughts)

I realize that not many people are interested in seeing a 4 year old photo of my firstborn. Surely I could have posted many numerous other things. But, I am procrastinating and I came across this photo on my flickr stream, a photo which I just happened to come across in my files a few weeks ago. And well, I love it. Reagan at 18 months old. About to be a big sister. My pride and joy. Look, I even took the time to paint her toenails! Oh, how simple life was then... She was spending the day at Grandma's house while I did my very first garage sale. That was crazy! Anyway, isn't she too cute?! Just thought I'd share...

IMG_0527

Okay, wait, I can make it relevant...

I just noticed while I was previewing my post that Reagan is doing what I call the Wysong squat. That would be Wysong, as in my mom's side of the family. Her dad (my grandpa) was a brick mason. When I was little everyone always used to joke about how some of his grand kids could squat so easily and stand up without using our hands. Funny that I would notice that today...

15 years ago today, my mom's brother Mel died. I can hardly believe that so much time has passed. He would have been welcoming his first grandchildren this spring, twins. I can hardly believe that so much has happened to our family in that span of time. But, we keep moving on... taking the good and the bad and living life. I read the book "My Sister's Keeper" recently and was struck by a statement towards the end.

"As much as you want to hold on to the bittersweet memory that someone has left this world, you're still in it."

Harsh? Yes. But true.

I hope that today as we remember him, we can continue living our lives and looking towards the future. Let's look forward to seeing those babies at 18 months old, and to their graduations, and their weddings, and to the days when they have babies of their own.

An Unlikely Love Story...

Today is my 8th wedding anniversary.

It kind of got me thinking about what I could possibly do for a post today, and I was stumped. Then as I was checking my usual blogs, one got me thinking. Heather @ Adventures of Aidanpod asked a simple question. "How did you and your man meet and fall in love?" And I thought, perfect! I have never actually written this story down before and what a perfect day to do it. So here it is, our love story. An unlikely one at that!

A little over ten years ago I was nearing the end of my high school experience, preparing to graduate and go off to Hanover College in the fall with my best friend Shannon. My parents had adopted J.C. that Christmas and his birthday was fast approaching. I had just gone through a really horrible break-up with my high school boyfriend. I was not looking for a relationship. But, sure enough, it found me and swept me of my feet, changing the course of the life I had planned for myself.

That year on May, 14 1999 (J.C.'s birthday) my parents had a party. They invited family and some close friends. Among those friends were the Polk's who had lived down the road since we moved into the neighborhood when I was in the third grade. They had two sons. One, who I knew very well Jeremiah (Miah) and I had grown up together. He was only a year older than I was. I can still remember sitting with my friend Kathryn on the edge of the basketball court watching him play. I was there of course for the moral support she needed to sustain her fleeting crush on him.

Back to my point...

Their other son's name was Chris and he was five years older than me. He was just home from college and living @ home. My parents had just weeks earlier made him J.C.'s godfather. They wanted him to have a younger, Spanish speaking role model to look up to. He was older and more mature. He had facial hair for God's sake! He could pound back the beers with my dad and he chewed tobacco. I never thought he'd notice me, and I probably didn't want him to. But, fate has a way of bringing people together, and that night at a six year old's birthday party we started talking.

I had never felt so grown up in my life...

After the party I went downstairs to brag to my older brother Shawn.

"Chris Polk was flirting with me tonight."

Of course he said I was a stupid kid and that I must have been hallucinating!

Then next day I went to my Senior Prom and had what up until then, was the worst night of my life. My ex for a date, a new crush who didn't know I existed, and I threw up in the bathroom. I went home and cried myself to sleep and didn't get out of bed the next day.

Then on Sunday night, Chris called. My mom brought me the phone and I couldn't believe my ears. He wanted to know if I felt like going to a movie with him and then getting something to eat. I of course jumped at the chance and said yes.

Little did I know that there was a story behind this phone call. You see Chris had gone home from the party talking about me too. And when his cousin called him on it, she bet him that he couldn't call and get me to go out with him. She obviously lost.

We spent the next few weeks completely inseparable, which is easy to do when you can walk through someone else's backyard to get to each other. Our parents were worried, about our age difference, about my going off to school in the fall, and about the potential catastrophic damage to their friendship. But, we were having fun.. there weren't any expectations and we were just getting to know each other. Preppy popular boy meets drama geek, no one would have put us together in a million years! But, it worked. He encouraged me to reconnect with my friends who I had so foolishly avoided for the last two and a half years. With graduation approaching, we all spent the day on the lake and the conversation turned to the after graduation party. Being in high school we were looking for a way to make it a little more "fun". I sort of raised my hand and volunteered the information that my "new boyfriend" just happened to be 22. Problem solved.

Chris and I am my graduation open house

chris and katie graduation

But, in all seriousness I still wasn't ready to deem this a "relationship" or make any sort of commitment to it. Until I went to New York. At the end of June, I took a theater trip to the Big Apple for a week and had the time of my life. Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, RENT, Beauty and the Beast, and so much more! When I got home there was a huge bouquet of roses waiting for me... one for every day since May 16 (our first date). I was so happy to see Chris, and I knew that that week away had changed everything.

Standing outside the car before I left for New York

IMG00040

To make what is already a long story short, I rearranged everything. I didn't go to Hanover like I had planned, I stayed closer to home at Manchester College. I came home every weekend and usually one night a week. The "boy next door" had stolen my heart when I least expected it. That Thanksgiving when he proposed, I accepted.

Everyone thought we were crazy! The only answer I could give them was, "when you know, you just know."

We waited a year and a half and were married on June 23, 2001.

Chris and Katie Wedding

Eight years and three babies later, I wouldn't change it for the world. Yes, there have been ups and downs. But, we have gotten through the best and the worst of it together. There is no one else I'd rather kiss goodnight, and no one else I'd rather wake up too each morning! I love you honey, and if you are reading this... Happy Anniversary!

Just for fun, a pic of my bridesmaids... we all had a blast that day!

Sorry for the horrible quality of the photos my scanner isn't working and I had to take pictures of the pictures with my BlackBerry.

Dee Dee's Birthday Party

Here are some of my fav pics from Dee Dee's Birthday...
I actually didn't even take most of them. Big thanks go out to my SIL Rachael who manned the camera while I did "party stuff"!

Isn't this one just precious! It's my favorite one of the day!

101_2401

Why is it that with three kids between the ages of 2 and 6, I am just officially tired of birthdays? I was honestly just glad to be done with the party. Some of it came out the way I had wanted, and other things I just let slide. And I am totally okay with that. What is wrong with me? I haven't even begun to enter the stage of sleepovers and Chuckie Cheese parties with the entire class from school... Lord help me then!

Letting the Kids be "Kids"

I'll be the first one to admit that I can be a little overbearing when it comes to my kids. I am easily stressed by little things like sandboxes, sidewalk chalk, and a fun little activity Reagan likes to refer to as "making dirt soup". I guess I stress about these things only because I can anticipate the mess, and the clean-up that comes afterward. I don't like it when clothes get dirty or ruined. I hate having to scrub sand out of some one's hair in the bathtub. But, I am working on trying to let some of these little things go and just let my kids be "kids".

So the other day, when we were cleaning out the garage in preparation for Dee Dee's birthday party, I just let loose and gave up. We were rinsing the floor of the garage off with the hose and the kids were having a ball trying to get in the path of the water and get themselves wet. Finally I just turned it on them and by the end of it they were all stripped down to their undies (or pull-ups) and they were soaking wet! They had a ball and to be honest so did I...

Dee Dee queen of the hose!

Reagan the ever protective big sister

I guess I learned that sometimes just letting kids be "kids" can actually make me feel like a kid again... and that can make all the mess in the world worthwhile~

Pefect Pictures?

I have said before how frustrating it is to me that I can never get a good group shot of my kids. Someone is always looking away, or has their eyes closed, or on a really bad day... pouting. Why is this?

Here is a picture of the kiddos on Easter, that I never got around to posting.

101_2276

This was the best one I got. I know it isn't horrible. Jack looks great, and at least Reagan is smiling. I have no idea what is going on with Kennedy!

Sometimes it seems like you can have this image of the perfect shot in your head and when it doesn't translate to the camera it can be frustrating. My problem is that I have managed to get those perfect shots before. But, I can only seem to get them when someone else is behind the camera. This picture was taken when Jack was just two weeks old and four days out of the hospital (story here). It was the second week of December and we used it for our Christmas card that year. I know this is a bad scanned in copy, but at the time it was perfect! It was exactly what I had in mind, if not more.

101_2349

This one has made an appearance on the blog before. Also a Christmas card picture... you try getting a 3yr old, an 2yr old, and a 9 month old who is crawling to sit still long enough for this one! It was a miracle. It is still my favorite picture of the three of them.

So for now, I won't complain if this is the best I can do on my own...

But... Leah do you think you could give me a call? Its time.

The story behind the picture...

Sorry to keep you all waiting! I'm sure the suspense must have been killing you. There were quite a few guesses as to why I had this picture taken...

Reagan Polk

But only one of you was right. If I was awarding a prize, it would have to go to Toni. I have no idea how you knew, but kudos to you! Yes, this picture was taken as a professional head shot for my little aspiring superstar! A couple of weeks ago Reagan stood on a stage in front of a theater full of people and sang her little heart out!

101_2310

101_2311

Our local Cancer Care Foundation hosted an American Idol night at the Wagon Wheel Theater. I know, I know she's a little young to be an American Idol. But, they had a special category just for the "future idols". Turns out she was the youngest one of the night and she had to go first! She sang Tomorrow from Annie and even though she forgot some of the words, she did amazing! I was just so proud that she had the courage to get up there and do it. I tell you this girl is not afraid of anything! She didn't raise the most money, but she was a winner in my book!

So, I have to give another little shout out to my friend Leah, who took the head shot. It was a whirlwind of events around here last month! We found out about the show on a Wednesday, auditioned that Thursday, and on Friday got the call that she had made the show! We had three weeks to get her ready for it! When they told me they needed a good picture of her I was afraid I would have to use her horrible school picture from this year. I called Leah and she came and took this photo on Saturday. I can't thank her enough!
So, this may have been the most exciting event of the month, but rest assured it was not the only event! I have many more pictures to post and stories to tell, so stay tuned!

Reagan's headshot

I know it's been to long... and I know you all deserve an actual post with real information. But, its been a crazy month and I just don't have the energy. I finally have pictures uploaded and ready to go, I just don't have the time to write about it all. So I decided to leave you with this small teaser...

Reagan Polk

Isn't my friend Leah amazing? She took this headshot for a very exciting event around here that we spent the whole month of April getting ready for. Anyone care to venture a guess as to what this picture was for?

Believe in Spring

Today is the first day of Spring Break around these parts. It is also the first year in a long time that we haven't gone anywhere to celebrate. More specifically, that we haven't gone to Florida. So of course, what could be a better way to start my non-vacation, than to wake up to snow on the ground. Isn't that just lovely. (said with a sarcastic deadpan tone) So, today in my usual tradition, as I look forward to the next season I can't help but think about a certain moose. I wonder what he would say about this morning's snow?

Oh, and I must leave you with one gratuitous "cute kid picture". Yesterday we went to my mom and dad's for pancakes. Reagan is always excited to do this because Grandpa lets her help flip the pancakes. I didn't have my camera, but my brother snapped this with his fancy schmancy iphone. I guess she's learning young...

A Conversation About Cupcakes

The following is a conversation that took place yesterday in my van. Please try and remember that as it took place, JoJo's Circus was playing on the T.V., Jack was trying to wiggle out of his car seat, and Reagan was screaming MOM at the top of her lungs from the back seat. She was attempting to be heard by said mom in the front seat who was driving her to school with both hands on the wheel and one ipod earbud in her ear.

Dee Dee: Hey, Shannon(who was sitting in the passenger seat)I like cupcakes!

Shannon: Really Dee Dee, I like cupcakes too.

Dee Dee: Hey, Shannon, cupcakes have sprinkles!

Shannon: That's right Dee Dee, cupcakes do have sprinkles.

Dee Dee: Hey, Shannon, cupcakes have icing!

Shannon: (trying to contain her laughter)Yes, Dee Dee cupcakes have icing.

Dee Dee: Hey, Shannon, guess what? I like cupcakes!

WHERE, is ask you, WHERE do they come up with this stuff?

Old Friends Are the Best...

Katie, Megan, Shannon, and Tiffany

This is by far, one of my favorite pictures from high school. Even as I type that it is hard to believe it was actually taken over 10 years ago! It seems like it was yesterday. In reality, it was a gorgeous sunny day, at the end of the summer, right before my senior year. My best friend in the world, Shannon, was having her senior pictures taken and wanted to include this group shot. I am so happy that she did.

What can I say about my best friends from high school? Ten years later, we are all different people. We are all married, some of us have kids, some jobs, some of us have both. But, I find myself looking back a lot lately on what my life was like ten years ago. It was fun and carefree. I was more worried about what part I was going to get in the fall play than I was about how I was going to pay to put gas in my car. Yes, I thought my life was going to end when my boyfriend went off to college that fall, but it didn't. I had some great friends to lean on. Friends like Megan, Shannon, and Tiffany.

Shannon has been my best friend since we sat together in English lit. freshman year. We did theater together, we did choir together, we cried over boys together. Even through college and into my married life she remained my best friend. She stood next to me at my wedding, and I stood next to her at hers. To this day, when I need a shoulder to cry on or a brain to bounce an idea off of Shannon is who I call. She may live four hours away, but she is always there for me.

I may have mentioned Tiffany in passing before. She just happens to be Reagan's voice instructor. She has always had a beautiful voice and a passion for singing, and I am so happy that she channeled that into a career. Although we kept in touch that first year of college we drifted apart after that. Then when I heard she was back in town, and had opened her own studio I decided to give her a call. Since then, we have reconnected and we try to have lunch about once a month.

As for Megan, we haven't stayed in touch as much. She did stay connected with Shannon for a few years and then things kind of fell apart. Its a long story... one that I don't think I should share here. But all in all, two out of three ain't bad right?

Today I had lunch with Shannon and Tiffany. It is amazing to me how I can fall right back into being that person I was back then. Today, I wasn't just Reagan's mom or Chris' wife, I was just me. Sometimes, it seems so easy to forget that I need to be me. I need to remember who I am and where I came from. I was reminded of that today, and I hope I don't forget it again. These are the people who helped make me who I am, and I am so grateful for that!

The Post Office... Revisited

Anyone remember this post from last year? Well, I took another trip to the post office last week With Dee Dee's class this time. I find it very interesting to be doing the same field trips over again with a different child. Each experience is different. For instance, last month I went with Dee Dee's class to the dentist. Now, I also did this with Reagan. Re-reading that post, I am reminded of just how different my two girls are! I obviously didn't post about Dee's trip to the dentist. Why you might ask? Well, because I had no pictures, and because I spent the entire field trip with her arms wrapped around my neck! At least the post office was a more fulfilling trip for her. Though she was still very shy, she at least walked and listened, and even participated.

See, she was all smiles!

But, for this moment she was right by my side...and hence, not in the picture

Student of the Week

101_2206

Last week, Reagan was the student of the week at school. Even though I took this photo last Monday and never got around to posting it, I didn't want to miss out on sharing it. As part of being student of the week, we had to make an "all about me poster" to hang in the hallway of the school. Then on Tuesday, I went into her classroom to read a book to her class. She chose "How I Became a Pirate". For the first time in five years I felt like I put my college degree in theater to use. I did all of the voices and everything, it was fun for me, if not for anyone else! Getting back to the poster, I would like to think that even though her Nini is her teacher, she learned something new about her from it's contents. Here they are:

All About Reagan

I am 5 years old.

My favorite color is red.

My favorite animal is a horse.

My favorite food is asparagus.

This is what I look like.

100_0162

My favorite thing to do is Cook with my mom and play with Dee Dee.

If I had one wish, I would wish to go to DisneyWorld.

I didn't have pictures for the last two, so we just cut pictures out of a magazine and put her face on them!

As I stopped to take that picture of Reagan with the poster, next to my van at the school, one of the other moms stopped me. She said,"Oh, you are always so good with the camera!" I don't know if maybe it is because Reagan is my oldest, and her daughter(the one in Reagan's class)is her youngest of four. But yes,I do happen to take my camera with my most of the time and if I have it I am always taking pictures. I don't develop a whole lot of them, and I certainly don't do much else with them other than post them here. But,I am glad that I have the blog to be able to post things like this, that might not otherwise get scrapbooked. And I have a lot more pictures from last weeks events that need to be posted, so stay tuned!

Trivia Tie-Breaker

Okay, this post is specifically for Sara, Kameron, and Kate. Please take a moment to view the following invisibles. If you can correctly guess all three of them, along with naming any of the actors (a point for each one) you shall be the winner. In the case of another tie, please pick an number between 1 and 10 and leave it along with your answers in the comments. Thank you.

I'm having a bad week... Trivia

*UPDATED* The answers have been posted and we have a tie. 3 people have 7 out of the 9 correct. And not a single one of you correctly guessed #4, and it is one of my all-time favorite movies! So, to solve this problem, very shortly I will be posting a tie-breaker quiz.
In other news, I need to give credit to the FilmWise website for creating these fun little brainteasers. If you are not involved in the tie-breaker, go check them out.
Ever just have one of those weeks, that it seems nothing can go your way? Well, I am having one this week. So rather than sit here and brood about all of the things going wrong, I am trying to stay positive. For instance, I got a phone call today from one of my oldest friends. It is so nice to talk to someone who really knows you. There is something to be said for someone who has been there with you through everything, all the high school and college crap and knows your history. That being said, I wanted to do something fun tonight. But, alas I am at home being mom. So I decided to play a game. Those of you who are regular readers will know that every Tuesday I play trivia over @ Sara's blog. Well, maybe she is having one of those weeks too, because she was too busy to get trivia posted. In her absence I have decided to play trivia here on my blog, again.

Here is the deal. These images are called invisibles (thanks Sara for the idea)

Here is an example.

trivia example 1

All you need to do is tell me what movie this image comes from.

In this case the answer would be Pretty Woman

trivia example 2

I would reference their website, but I don't want anyone cheating. Feel free to ask the people in your house/workplace for help, just no Internet cheating. I will be sure to give the creators full credit when I post the answers, which will probably be on Friday night. Until then I will leave comment moderator on. So, just leave your answers in the comments. Normally when I do trivia no one plays. Is this because my questions are too hard? Well, I hope that these are a little easier, and fun. So, even if you don't know all of the answers, please play anyway and just answer the ones you know. Have fun, if for no other reason than to humor me. Or, you could play simply because I will be sending the winner a $15 Starbucks gift card.
