Books I've Been Reading

Mary Poppins by PL Travers...cute...wasn't quite like the Disney movie but I liked it.
The Color of Milk by Nell Leyshon...hated it, very depressing. It is about a girl in the 1830's in Wngland. Her father was very mean and made them work all the time. She was given to a Clergy man and his family to help in change for payment to her father. She was born with something wrong with her leg and couldn't get around as quickly as others but also had an honest way of looking at life and said just what she thought.it ended horribly and could have so easily gone the other way...we need hope not dispair!
Wonder by PJ Palacio...good! A book of a boy with a deformed face and his life when his parents finally put him in a public school.
Peace Like a River by Leif Enger...liked this book. A story of a boy and his family, their trials, miracles and love.
The Beekeepers Apprentice: or, On the Segregation of the Queen (Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes Book 1) by Laurie R. King
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury...a story in the future about firemen who burn books instead of putting out fires. When a fireman comes across some one who changes his life and helps him to think that maybe burning books isn't right....it was very a very good book.
Wild: From Lost to found on the Pacific Coast trail by Cheryl Strayed...I think this book could have been a lot more interesting. It was about a girl whose mother died of cancer and she never really came to grips with it. She threw herself away on sex and drugs and carried on with those behaviors even as she walked the trail. Not my favorite book.

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo...if you know me you know that this is my favorite book of all time. I love how Jean Valjean changes his life because of the Christian life of one man. His life is turned to good yet he still struggles with doing what he feels is right but through it all he comes out the conquerer. I love it!!!!

The Cat Who Came in From the Cold - Deric Longden
The Silence of God by Gale Sears-a wonderful historical novel about the only LDS family in St.Petersburg Russia in the early 1900's at the time of the Bolshevik revolution.
Middlemarch "A Study of Provincial Life" by George Elliot - I read that this is the greatest book in English literature. I don't think I would say that, I liked it but I don't know that I would recommend it to anyone. It is the about the lives of the middle class in the 1830's in England.
Don Quixote Volumes 1 & 2 by Miguel de Cervantes - I have seen the movie and the musical but the book is really funny or "droll" (a word used much in the book!)
Outcasts United by Warren St. John-a wonderful story of a strong willed woman helping refugee children and their families through a soccer team. There are many sad stories from the refugees, dealing with prejudice from the town where they live, and some wonderful outcomes. A very inspiring true stroy.
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley - she was only 18 years old when she wrote this, amazing!
Mary Louise Series by L. Frank Baum-written around 1916 by the author of The Wizard of Oz. They are about young girls who try to solve some mysteries.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - I enjoyed this book very much. It was well written and I loved the story of the little girl if not the story of the prejudices of the people!
Mary Queen of Scots by Jacob Abbott - this was a very interesting history of the Queen of Scotland, she went throught many trials and spent most of her life as a prisoner of some sort. Not too much happiness in her life but she seemed to handle it well, however in the end she was beheaded by the queen of England.
The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orozy - I really enjoyed this book. It was just a nice, fun, romantic, hero book.
Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star by Brandon Mull (It is the second one in the series, I read the first a while ago, they aren't my favorite but my son really likes them so I thought I'd read them.)
The Undaunted by Gerald Lund
The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows - A wonderful book about the invasion of the Gurnsey Islands during world war II
The Help by Kathryn Stockett - A very good book about the black servants in the 1960's down in Mississippi told from their side of the story.
Let's Roll by Lisa Beamer-Wife of 9-11 hero Todd Beamer
The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien - I think this is my third time reading this, I enjoy it!

Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser
Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe - A most wonderful book! Hower, so very sad, unbelievable that we as human beings can treat people like that and to shutter to think there are things like that still going on today, how very sad!

A Midsummers Night Dream by William Shakespeare
Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott- enjoyed it very much! Kind of a cross between Robin Hood and A Knights Tale, in fact, Robin Hood is in it
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte - Loved it!

Little Men by Louisa May Alcott - Loved it and wished I had read it before I had children
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens - Loved it!
Day of Remembrance Volume 4 in the Promised Land Series by David G. Wooley
Love Finds You in Liberty Indiana by Melanie Dobson - a historical romance about the underground railroad
Harry Potter Series (again) - I can't help it, I just like it
The Sound of Rain, A Distant Thunder, Winds of Hope,Shelter from the Storm, Volumes 1,2,3 & 4 in The Jayson Wolfe Series by Anita Stansfield
