I Heart Corn.

There are 2 things that I just love to talk to Gavin about these days and those 2 things are things he loves to talk about these days as well... Read that twice, you'll get it. They are:

His crushes and getting to be a lunchroom helper (remember that?).

He gets as equally excited about both.

Girls and serving up corn and french fries. 2 very awesome things.

Fire!

As many of you know we had a fire come through our Norco Hills this past Tuesday. The Riverside fires you were hearing about on the news. That was us. That was in our neighborhood! Our street!
I was at play group that afternoon and I could see smoke up coming up over the hills in the general direction of our house. I thought nothing of it. Then there was more. And more. And more. One of the moms at the play group called her sister and she said she heard on the news the fire was by a community college in the Riverside area. I didn't know where the community college was so I called Whitely's dad who is a firefighter for Chino Hills and asked him if he had heard anything. He told me he had not, so it couldn't be too out of control because when it gets out of control, that's when they start notifying other fire departments. Then he calls me back and tells me exactly where it is located, which was very close to us, and that he will keep us posted. I called Christian to tell him and he decided to come out to the house to check on the horses and to let them out of their stalls, because the smoke would make them panic. A few minutes later I get a text message from Whit's dad telling me it's much closer than he had previously heard; they had been notified(!) and that he was not telling me what to do, but maybe we should not go back to the house.
This is when I learned my lesson about being prepared. Because that was when I freaked out. I got panicked and started running around in circles trying to think of what I needed to save, where it was, what I should grab for who and all that stuff. And that's more complicated than you would think. Especially if you are not thinking calmly and clearly. Erin wrote a really good blog about her thoughts on being prepared in an emergency situation after thinking about what happened at our house, which are basically my thoughts as well, so you can cross reference.
I can feel my friend Leslie saying right now- I've got it done! Her hubs is a firefighter. In their gorgeous home that looks like it could be in a magazine, they have fire extinguishers adorning every room in their house. It's part of their decor.
This is what we packed up. The dog, horses, David's turtle and tortoise, (we forgot the snake-oops), all our computers, baby clothes, our pictures, albums, journals, church and legal documents and  baby formula. I forgot the diapers! My thoughts behind saving only Jay's clothes, is that he throws up a lot and poops on them all the time and I change him at least twice a day. He needs the most clothes. I only had a few minutes to pick. Plus he just got a whole bunch for being born and they are all so new and cute and I couldn't let them go to waste. I want my children to know, saving only his clothes has absolutely nothing to do with the order in which I love them. That's based on something totally different. And that was a joke for those of you who wouldn't get it and made me ruin the joke by having to add that.
I wasn't "scared" that day. I was frantic. I knew everything was going to be fine. I never once felt that we were in danger, I was just kind of bummed. I didn't know what kind of damage, if any, was going to be done to our house and what kind of clean up or loss it might entail, if any. Maybe I was in denial.
BUT, coming home and being able to see for ourselves how close the fire actually had been, that's when I realized how lucky we were. It came right up to the edge of our street, at the top of our street; where it T's off. That's 3 houses up from us. Up the street, to the right on the little dead end road the fire had stopped right at the edge of that family's yard. Like- right up to the edge. One side is charred, the other side is yard. They must be feeling so lucky and grateful. Gavin and Rebecca's little hide-out was burned. Which, to be honest, is okay by me because I was never that crazy about them playing in that big bush.
We were SO SO SO lucky and I think many prayers were answered that day. We were told it was contained at all times but coming home and seeing how CLOSE it was to our house....
We are so grateful to all the fire fighters and others who work and train for these kinds of situations to keep us safe and all the things that are important to us as well.  Like our houses.
I do have to add this. To give you a true idea of the kind of person I am and where my priorities are- When I was driving up to my house from the play group, wondering what was going on, in somewhat of a panic, I was trying to go through in my mind all the things I wanted to take and where they might be and how to most effectively get this done. My first thought went to the curry chicken I had simmering in the crock pot that I had started cooking earlier that morning. It was filled to the brim and I was wondering how I could get it into the car without spilling it. Should I let a little broth out or maybe just transfer it to another bowl or Tupperware??? I didn't want to waste it! I had been looking forward to it all morning! Ask Erin how much I was obsessing over the loss of my chicken.
So yes, that would be me. Thinking to save the food first. Mom of the Year.

This was what I first saw. Didn't seem too bad.

This was cool, watching the helicopters flying over us. Did you know they can suck up 500 hundred gallons of water in 60 SECONDS!

They used the golf course ponds for water. Can you see the hose?

All the trees and brush you see running through the course, that was what caught on fire moving towards us. These were all taken from our back yard.

These were the last 2 photos I took before we left. The fire came up even closer! Right up to the edges of our horse trails.

After photos.

You can see how the fire worked it's way through the golf course brush.

This was where Gavin's hide-out was located. Was.

As you can see. Right up to the trails.  We are 3 houses down from that.

What a day!

Back in the swing of things

Our school year has started and once again we are back into the swing of things with our Clovis/Norco travel. And we love it! Life is never slow around here and it's so true- time flies when you're having fun.  It's going to be a little more chaotic this year with one more baby but that's what we do- chaos. We're pretty good at it now. It's how we roll.

This first trip to Clovis I brought up Sheldon and Jay with me and then Christian and Whitley came up for the rest of the weekend. We had so much fun. We all love it when Christian gets to visit. We like to show him around our stomping grounds. We took him to the Dog House Grill for lunch after Gavin's soccer game and gave him a little taste of the land o' Fresno. Mmmm tri-tip. College football and tri-tip. Sounds like a party we like to have.

It was fun spending a few days with my boys. My 3 sons. My sweet, beautiful, delicious little boys. That's sounds weird but I'll leave it. Gavin had his jog a thon on Thursday and I took the two little boys out to cheer him on. It was hot and miserable. However, Gavin had a whole bunch of cheerleaders out there that day! He's so lucky. And we do love to create a spectacle of ourselves, don't we? We sure do. He loves it too. You should ask him. When Gavin and I are together, everyone needs to be a part of it. Anyway.
I've mentioned how Sheldon loves to run, even if it's nowhere in particular. So when he sees a huge crowd of kids running, you better believe he's going to join in on all of that hot fun. About a lap in to the race he couldn't stand it anymore just watching all those kids "getting" to run, so I let go of the back of his shirt and he took off with all his might and go and dashed right into the frantic mob of hot, sweaty fourth graders racing for Popsicle sticks. Don't tell him he's 2ft shorter than everyone else. He BOLTED. It was so cute. He ran so hard and he swung his little arms so hard. I was anticipating that when he got to the bend of the lap he was going to just keep running right out to the field, out the school gates and run as far away from me as he could, like he usually does when he picks up the notion to have a jog, and that I was going to have to chase after him with Jay in the Bjorn like some crazy, sweaty fat lady with a baby flopping around on her chest. But he took the turn with the other kids and kept right in line. It was funny to see all the kids tripping over him. I have to say, he was faster than about half the them out there. Run skinny boy run!

There he goes. The little half sized man in red shorts.

Coming in... Can you spot him? Look low.

Last leg and he was heading right into my open arms, but then runs past me

straight to my diet coke he had been eyeing all morning. A lap is a long way on little legs. I let him have it. He deserved it.

That would be my son pushing a girl out of his way. Or is she pushing him out of the way???

My 3 sons. Sweet and delicious.
Isn't it obvious I'm dieting?

Soccer season has started. Nothing says fall like sitting out in 100 degree heat at some semi- new school with no trees or shade, watching a soccer game. So fun. Here's few pictures from our last game.
This won't mean anything to anyone but for the record and for Gavin, because he likes to know this kind of stuff and it means something to him, when I look at these pictures it's like looking at Gavin's dad. They are clones. They way they stand, the little hands on the head thing, the way he crouches over. Even the way he points and yells at his teammates. When he does it. Communicate Gavin! (He's captain) Dad played college soccer and it's like watching a miniature version of that.  It just kind of blows my mind sometimes.

I'm so proud of Gavin. I know every parent loves to watch their child play and I'm no different. It's incredible to see how every season he matures and grows and develops in the game. He gets faster and stronger every year. His dad is the coach and I know he and everyone else is focused on Gavin's game, but I love to watch his face, as you can tell by most of my photos.  That's what I'm always looking at.

This got by.

That was a freaking AWESOME PK save! To the right and he guessed it. Tied game.  I get so nervous just at the set up of a PK. My stomach goes into knots for him. I can just feel his anxiety.  By the way he brushes his hands on the sides of his knees.
Misses the first. I don't know who is dying more. Me or him. Next one, he saves it!!  OH! My heart, be still my heart!! This picture looks a little anti-climatic, but I was trying to peek over the camera to see the kick for myself and still get a shot of it. It's not the best but you can see that he saved it. It was so exciting!
What a boy... My biglittle boy. Sniff..

Coming up are the photos of the  crazy fire we had in our hills on Monday. I'm waiting for David to get off his computer and using up all the....modem? so it doesn't take a year for me to upload my photos. Get off David!!

It's official.

Family and Friends on a Sunday afternoon. Must be a BABY BLESSING!!! A week ago. Yeah I know.
It was a double baby blessing. Cousins Micah and Jay. No changing names now.
I could have done a better job at getting a photo of everyone who came over but I was too busy eating the cupcakes. So at the last minute I was scrambling around trying to get a picture of everyone, which I didn't.  Here is us. Thanks for coming.

This is a typical afternoon for us. Whitley being shocking and Sheldon working on picking off his nickels. This kid is obsessed with those little things. He picks at them like scabs. When Christian takes of his own shirt Sheldon will go to work on his as well. I think they creep him out. He's mostly just baffled by mine. To be honest, so am I.

One of my favorite things in life is when Whitely will emerge from the play room in one of her "outfits". I always like to see what she comes up with. Today it was this....

Leave the nickels alone!

What the ****?! For real? Whitley we don't dance like that
But look at those legs! Thank you God for not giving her my scrawny little things.

That's more like it. I like this kind of modern/interpretive dance. Amoeba? Mime?

This is fine too.

Hands on nickels!! Can you see that he is trying to pick them off.

One of my favorite things to do, is just pick up and take off. For a little day trip adventure just because it sounds fun. That's what we did last Monday. Picked ourselves up off the couch and took off to Lake Arrowhead. Thanks Berretts for the idea and invite. I love Lake Gregory and Arrowhead. It's about an hour away and when you get there you feel like you have completely left the hot muggy, smoggy mess of the Inland Empire. It's so beautiful. I can't wait for next summer to do some more camping there. This was where we had the good camping experience. Not the barfy one.
Just a few photos of that gorgeous afternoon, with some even more gorgeous kids in tow. These pictures are so cute and I had to put them up.
How did we end up with so many blonde's??? Whitley doesn't like to look at these pictures because she wasn't there. She refuses to believe it happened because she wasn't part of it. I don't blame her. I do the same thing. She was at dad's house that afternoon. Sniff. We needed our little token brown bear to keep things real. We missed her. Missed Gavin too, but the best part is, this lake is just a jump and a skip away so we can go back when ever we feel like it. These pictures were too precious.

 No hands on nipples!

Kristin was the "fun mom" for the day. Rowing all the kids around.

My pregnant partner in crime. Another fun mom.

Boring modest mom. Too soon for the suit. Remember David's picture? Told you I learned my lesson.

Hand on nickel.

This is funny. That's me in the background. But I love that those two guys now have a special spot in my family album and blog. 'Sup.

The little Motley Crue.

Why can't we be friends, why can't we be friends???

Fun.

These are my kids and I'm proud of them!

Who are these children coming down.....
Coming down, like falling rain through darkened skies......

Did I get the words right? Anyway..
Who are these guys?!
