Glimpses

Every now and then I get a glimpse of a happy friendship growing between Savannah and Virginia.  It makes me so happy when it happens...

Discussion

S: Mom, each day someone gets to be the flag helper.  He holds the flag up while everyone says stuff to it.

Me: Oh, you mean they say something like, "I pledge allegiance to the flag...(I said the whole thing)... indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

S: That's it, but there's no FUR in it.  There's NO FUR in it Mom!

Me: Yeah, well I didn't mean to say fur, I meant to say for.

All to ourselves

Yesterday we had the entire splash park to ourselves.  Okay, there was one other kid, but it was great on a hot afternoon.

Water makes even the hottest of days much better.

Self-Identity

Savannah has recently become acutely aware that her eyes are two different colors.  One green, and one mostly brown.  Here is her self-portrait from the first week of preschool:

Apparently there has been some discussion about it because even Lucy is acutely aware in her drawings.  See Savannah there in the middle?  What eyelashes!!!

Washington, DC Visit

Thanks to the Parkers for letting us descend on them for a quick weekend visit.  We had so much fun!!  It was Bennett's birthday, so we got to celebrate at the National Zoo.  We went for walks and enjoyed the pleasant September weather.  Savannah rode a big bike with training wheels for the first time.  I tried my hand at face painting.  And we enjoyed a beautiful park with ponds, gazebos, a tree house, and a lot of open space to run and play.  So fun to be with the cousins.

First Day

Ahh, the first day of school.  Such a great day!  Savannah was a little nervous but excited.  Virginia alternated squealing with enthusiasm to have all the toys to herself, and asking, "Where's Savannah?"  I was surprisingly melancholy about it.  I miss her but I am so happy for her to be in a happy, safe, and stimulating place.  Hooray, Savannah!!

Lemonade anyone?

Two weeks ago we checked out a Max and Ruby book from the library about a lemonade stand.  Ever since Savannah has been begging to have a lemonade stand.  It was never about the money, but about the lemonade, the umbrella, the sign, and the customers. 

 So, I did my best to fulfill the high expectations.  I just hoped that a few people would stop by.

Lucy was our first, and best customer.

 We didn't have to wait long at all for the customers to come.

"It's okay Mom, I'll give one to Birginia for free because she doesn't have any money."

 Our neighbors were so sweet.  Ironically, it was mostly men who stopped to buy, often the wife was in the front seat pushing them out.  They loved her, and they tipped her, which was good because I wasn't sure how counting out change would go.  

 It was a success, and she hurried right in to put money in her "Go Utes" account. (aka. college fund)

Today was the last day that our favorite public pool was open for the year.  I know what you are thinking.  Hmm, Texas, record heat, record drought, WHY?  I can't figure out WHY they close the pools in September when summer lasts another month.  It didn't stop us from having fun with our best buddies, one last time.

Our life in August

I seriously can't believe that it is September today!  Partially because it is still 105 degrees outside.  When will it end?!?
In August we:

Celebrated my birthday.

Trevor made me breakfast, ABC omelet, etc.  DELISH!

Then lunch with Dana and kids to celebrate.  

A LOT of creative indoor play because it has been SO hot outside.

 Some cooking with Dad (who is WAY more patient in the kitchen than I am.)

 Figured out how to use a tutu to transform into a bride. 

Cami sent the BEST EVER Go Utes banner for my birthday.  It has been flying all month.

Chef Trevor accidentally dropped a clove of garlic down inside the inner depths of the oven...and LEFT IT THERE.   I was baking blondies and after smelling sweet, then burning garlic as the oven preheated, I disassembled the whole bottom of the HOT oven and retrieved the NASTY burned clove.  Grrrr.

 Because of the heat, we have spent inordinate amounts of time on the lake, which is only half full now because of the drought.  We've even had to get more creative on the lake to keep the little ones interested and happy there.  :)

Suckers.  What a winner.

Somehow the sunset skiing never gets old.  Now that school has started, we have the place to ourselves again.  Want to join us, anyone?  Come for a visit!

One can only spend so much time with my friend Dana before she starts to rub off on you.  So, another indoor August project was turning an ugly clearance tank into a school skirt for Savannah.
