Preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse

Right now we're prepping to provide energy for the home should trouble arise. Here is what I am setting up:

First let me say I'm not an electrician but do have some basic knowledge so if you copy what I've done and catch your house on fire I'm not responsible and sorry I'm not a fireman either.

First I got a 3500 watt gas generator off of Ebay awhile back and stocked up with about 70 gallons of gas to run it. I don't want to wait in line at the gas station for $12/ gal gas.



Next, I got electrical box to switch my 6 most necessary 120v home circuits to the generator properly, quickly and safely. I chose the outlets in the kitchen, kitchen lights, refrigerator, deep freeze, family room and master bath lighting, washing machine etc.



I set up the new generator and tested it. I ran a 10 ga. 4 wire 30 amp cord from it (in my back yard) into my breaker panel in the garage. Now, I have all my most needed functions of the house covered with probably enough gas to last 2 weeks if we aren't wasteful and don't fire up the 42 inch plasma TV's. Generator $300, Electrical Switcher Panel $209, cord $75 all from Ebay.



Next I wanted to add some versatility. I picked up a $150 Chinese 12vdc-120vac inverter from Harbor freight. It is rated at 2000 watts continuous and 4000 watts intermittent. I set it up so I could run it into my transfer switch instead of the generator.

I plugged it into the house and hooked it up to my truck battery. It works perfectly as well.

I now can run my critical house functions from the grid, off of a gas generator, or off a car battery in the case of an emergency.



We're plumb out of cash right now but in the coming months I plan to buy some deep cycle batteries and some solar panels to keep them charged. At that point I will be able to run about 1/3 of my home off the sun all the time and save some $ too.

You never know

Today we are all very sick. Every single one of us, I think the only fighting I have come across was about who was sicker. This is about just a moment in time but one of those moments that make me think I might be doing better as a mother than I thought I was. I choose a theme every once in a while and write scriptures or quotes and the tape them on the wall across from the toilet in my bathroom. I forget they are there unless I'm in there or someone has to use my bathroom and mentions them. The kids have all had to use my bathroom but it never occurred to me they were reading them but Liesel came up and said "you know mom I really like the paper that says 'for all flesh is in many hands, be still and know that I am God'". I was flabbergasted. Not only does she read them but she is memorizing them! Then from a pile of blankets on the couch a voice pipes up with "it's not many hands, it's my hands. ...for all flesh is in my hands, be still and know that I am God." Again a moment of silence. Not just one kid but both kids have memorized these scriptures while sitting there. We have never talked about it, it was never brought up, they don't even know why I put them there but they read them, understood them and memorized them. What powerful spirits the Lord is sending.
