Controller Mapping Issues on build 924
Hello! I have an Xbox One controller that will connect to my steam link, but doesn't map correctly. For some reason the middle buttons are mapped to the shoulder buttons, and other buttons just aren't recognized. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting multiple times, and even tried a factory reset of my system.

WIRELESS CONTROLLER FOR XBOX ONE Model 1708, if it matters. Controller was working fine before updating.

If you roll back to an older build (922 or earlier), does it still work?

It did prior to updating

Hm. Okay, two more questions:

1. Is this true in the controller test screen on the Link as well, or ONLY when streaming?
2. How is the controller connected to the Link? (Wireless adapter, Bluetooth, USB cable, tiny carrier pigeons, etc.)
Button mappings are broken in the controller test as well, and it is only able to pair through Bluetooth

use another controller or k/m to pair devices and remap the desired controller

Couldn't get this working after trying with the manual and automatic methods, not really sure why. Triple checked all the file path names, made sure it was a publicly available build, and tried every USB port on the link, no dice.

I don't have a 2nd controller and it would be cheaper for me to just buy a long HDMI at that point and circumvent using the steam link at all. Plus some of the buttons appear to not be recognized at all so I'm not sure this would work.
a usb keyboard or mouse is dirt cheap, or you can steal it from the host to pair and configure the controller on the link
Okay, I've gotten ahold of a model 1708 controller (and a model 1713 wireless adapter that was in the box with it), and tried it on a Steam Link running 924. And, unfortunately, it all seems to work for me?

Connecting via the model 1713 wireless adapter, I see it as "Xbox One S Controller" and the controls all are correct -- the select/start buttons show as select/start (rather than shoulders, as you're seeing), the triggers work correctly, etc.

Connecting via Bluetooth, I see it as "Xbox One S Controller" there as well, and the controls are still all correct -- select/start buttons act as select/start, the triggers work correctly, etc.

I'd recommend a factory restore to see if you had somehow accidentally remapped it, but you say you've already tried that.

It would help if you could get logfiles from the Steam Link, in particular the /mnt/scratch/log/S99steam file... but if manually rolling back isn't working for you, I imagine whatever's gone wrong is also going to prevent enabling ssh if you don't already have it on..

At the very least, the streaming_log.txt from the host machine might have something useful?

This seems to be where we have a difference, I no longer have the adapter for the controller and am using a different wireless adapter (I believe it is this model[www.ebay.com] but the text on the side is a bit hard for me to read). I can try to plug my steam link into the PC and see what log files there are, didn't even know you can do that honestly. I'll report back when I'm home and able to do so (if I'm able to do so), just wanted to give the initial reply

I may also see if I can try to find a different adapter to use, but this one worked for my PC last time I tested it so idk

Stuff

I went ahead and connected the ASUS wireless adapter to my PC again and tested the controller mapping in steam Big Picture mode, everything works fine and appears to be mapped correctly.

I also went ahead and grabbed a USB-3 to USB-3 cable and plugged the Steam Link into my PC to try and look at the log files like you mentioned, but my PC did not recognize the Steam Link at all (tried with the power cable plugged in and without it plugged in).

Not really sure what else I can try on my end, let me know if you know of anything. I'll see if I cant find another bluetooth wireless adapter to try in the meantime around the house somewhere.
Looks like it still is broken on beta Build 925 sadly

I did manage while scrounging to find a USB-A to USB-Micro cable though and when plugging the controller directly into the Steam Link, all of the button mappings work fine. Seems like the update just broke something between the controller and this model of wifi adapter, it looks like? And possibly others based on other threads.

(Know I said it can only pair through Bluetooth and that's because I thought I didn't have said cable ><)

I'll send you e-mail to continue troubleshooting.
