Steam Link/SteamVR freezes and stutters when looking down
I'm using a Quest 3 and no matter the game, when I look straight down, the stream will freeze or stutter heavily until I look back up. Any solutions?

FWIW, you'll usually find more help for the VR streaming in the SteamVR forums; the Steam Link forum usually deals with 2D streaming; it's just that the Steam Link (2D) app has the VRLink (3D streaming) app glued onto the side to make it so you only need to launch one thing to have either.

(This is not intuitive in terms of seeking support, no.)

But since I try to snag stuff from both places... here's a couple of questions.

  • First off, is the SteamVR side of things the default build or the beta build? (If it's the default, could you try with the beta?)
  • Is the host running Windows 10, Windows 11, some flavor of Linux?
  • When you say it happens regardless of game, do you have it happen when you're in the construct (e.g., the empty space with the mountains on the horizon)? Or is it ONLY when a game is active? (If you are running SteamVR Home, try temporarily disabling it to get into the construct instead when not in a game.)
  • And when you say the the stream freezes or stutters, does the HMD mirror window on the desktop show similar behavior, or is it still smooth? (If you don't have the mirror window enabled, right-click on the SteamVR window and enable it.)

Hi! Thanks for responding. I posted the same post in the SteamVR forums too. Wasn't too sure which one would be appropriate so I just did both. Anyway,

1. Default build

2. Windows 11

3. I can't say for certain but I believe both construct and Steam Home also froze.

4. When I replicated the issue in a couple different games, I took a quick glance at my monitor while It was happening and the desktop was completely smooth. Meanwhile, my headset was showing a frozen picture and black boxes.

THANKFULLY, It seemed to have somehow remedy itself? Sometimes it still stutters a tad when I look down but not as bad as it used to. I also noticed that freezing would only happen when I was in sitting position. If I stood up and looked down, it was fine. Sitting down and looking down at the same time seemed to make it freeze for some weird reason.

I'm happy it's (mostly) gone but I would've loved to hear why it was happening, since it was so specific that it only froze when I looked downward.

Anyway, if it starts happening again I'll definitely try out the beta and replicate it and maybe even get some footage of it too.

Thank you again!

If it does happen again, go to your Steam logs directory (probably C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\logs) and grab vrserver.txt, vrcompositor.txt, and driver_vrlink.txt and save them off; they may have useful information.
