Steam Link

Steam Link

Why is the max resolution for video streaming still only 1344x1344 as we approach 2026?
Or 1536x1536 if you have modified steamvr.vrsettings
This is an extremely low resolution, utterly unsuitable for VR gaming.

agreed. I think they're worried about compatibility with handhelds like the Steam Deck.
They're able to achieve higher bitrate with the lower overall resolution.

it's just a shame, because on Linux SteamLink is IMO the best option over ALVR or WiVRn, but the encode res is still trash compared to what you can do with VirtualDesktop or even Meta's Link with a cable.

IMO they need to do the following:
allow ability under advanced tabs to--
select encoder (H264/HEVC/AV1)
adjust deeper specific encoder settings (ie encode foveation settings)
select bitrate
go with a cabled option that allows high bitrate, high encode res H264

I figured out that the video resolution should be the same as the rendering resolution, with 1344/1536 merely representing the size of the center area for foveated encoding. However, Steam Link's compression algorithm is extremely poor, resulting in very low quality.
