Tried opting in, wasn't letting me. It just restarts at the 1.1.56 level build.

confirmed. no download, just starts 1.1.56.

Mine starts 1.1.57, but can't switch back to public. I'm looking at it now, thanks!

Okay, I just uploaded build 1.1.57.137 and that seems to work well. I nuked ~/.local/share/SteamLink and started with a fresh install just to be sure. I don't recommend doing that unless you're fine with losing your pairings and settings though.
I still can't get it to work...

I just updated to the beta using the following in a terminal session:
STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME="${XDG_DATA_HOME:-$HOME/.local/share}"/SteamLink echo "file://$STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME" >"$STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME/update_url" echo "http://media.steampowered.com/steamlink/rpi/steamlink-rpi3-1.1.57.137.tar.gz" >"$STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME/public_build.txt"
and it let me switch back to the public build fine, but won't update to the beta using the button under support again. maybe 1.1.56 needs a minor tweak for it to function properly?

Possibly, although it was working fine for me with a fresh install (rm -rf ~/.local/share/SteamLink; steamlink)

I tried the
rm -rf ~/.local/share/SteamLink; steamlink
and after the reinstall of 1.1.56 it still did not go into the beta using the button under support ... so I searched for and removed everything steam* and valve* except the 1.0.7 installer package (which popped back up after the 1.0.8 was removed), rebooted the pi, reinstalled the steam link app and it still will not update to the beta using the support button.

oh ... I must also say, having a space between Valve and Corporation in some of the folder names messed with me a bit when 'rm - r' kept telling me no such directory existed when I was staring right at it, I finally figured out putting the directory path in quotes worked ... lol, still a linux noob.

Since I fully removed anything Valve and Steam from the pi and the problem persists after reboot/app reinstall, I think the 1.1.56 public build needs a tweak for it to work properly.

Hmm, what's the output of:
curl -s http://media.steampowered.com/steamlink/rpi/beta_build.txt

I get:
http://media.steampowered.com/steamlink/rpi/steamlink-rpi3-1.1.57.137.tar.gz

Also, I tried to send you e-mail, but it was rejected from the address associated with your Steam account. Can you let me know when it's updated?

Thanks!

I get the same thing with that command, but when I hit the button it drops to the desktop like it's going to start downloading, but just loads up 1.1.56 without downloading/installing the beta update. the only way it's loaded for me was with
STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME="${XDG_DATA_HOME:-$HOME/.local/share}"/SteamLink echo "file://$STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME" >"$STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME/update_url" echo "http://media.steampowered.com/steamlink/rpi/steamlink-rpi3-1.1.57.137.tar.gz" >"$STEAMLINK_DATA_HOME/public_build.txt"
and in the last line it had to be public_build.txt, beta_build.txt failed to download if that makes any difference.

Yes, beta_build.txt shouldn't fail to download. What error are you getting?

a pop-up box with "Couldn't download archive, aborting update." and an OK button.

It looks like the contents of your update override and the beta build are the same. Can you edit /usr/bin/steamlink and add more debugging information to find out what's happening here?

sure, what do I need to add to the file? nothing jumped out at me when I looked at it aside from there not being a beta build section in it.

file contents https://pastebin.com/azJnFqf6

Try adding set -x after the comments at the top of the file and post the output while opted into the beta.

I also noticed the "switch to beta" button does not change to a "switch to public" button and when I restart the steam link app it will automatically revert to the public build if it was on the beta build.

This means that the update branch file isn't getting updated properly. Is it read-only or something weird like that?

Also, do you have the XDG_CONFIG_HOME environment variable set?

total linux noob here ... I have no idea what that is, the Buster install is default, where do I check this and how should it be set?

Open a terminal window and type (no quotes) "printenv XDG_CONFIG_HOME" and see if you get an output. I didn't BTW.
.
Also, if you just type "printenv", it should list all of your environment variables.

I got "/home/pi/.config" which is a hidden folder with a lot of files in it, the Valve/Steamlink related file was not read only and had nothing about update_branch in it.

edit: now that 1.1.58 is out this is a moot point for now. guess we'll see if it persists with the next beta.

I think it will. I'll set XDG_CONFIG_HOME and see if I can reproduce it.

Yep, that was the trick. I'm working on it now. Thanks!
