Steam Link

Steam Link

steamlink exiting instead of opening menu
I used AI to generate this bug report:

Summary
Opening the Steam menu overlay while in big picture mode causes Steam Link to disconnect with a fatal Wayland error. This began after updating Steam Link to version 1.0.16 today (May 23, 2026). It was working correctly on the previous version.

Steps to Reproduce

Launch Steam Link on Raspberry Pi and connect to host PC
Press B or Home on controller to open the Steam menu
Steam Link immediately disconnects

Expected Behavior
The Steam overlay menu opens without interrupting the stream.

Actual Behavior
Steam Link disconnects with the following errors in the log:

Video size: 342x1080, output size: 1920x1080
[destroyed object]: error 6: invalid buffer stride or height for plane 0
ERROR: Wayland display connection closed by server (fatal)

When the overlay menu opens, the capture size changes to 342x1080. The Pi's hardware decoder cannot handle this unusual resolution and crashes the Wayland display connection.

System Information

Raspberry Pi (client)
Device: Raspberry Pi 5
OS: Debian GNU/Linux 13 (Trixie)
Kernel: 6.18.29+rpt-rpi-2712
Desktop: labwc (Wayland)
Steam Link version: 1.0.16

Host PC

OS: Linux Mint 22.3 (Zena)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070
NVIDIA Driver: 580.159.03
Steam Client Build: 1779486452 (May 8, 2026)
Steam Branch: Stable

Additional Notes

The issue occurs with both hardware decoding enabled and disabled
The issue occurs with NVFBC capture enabled and disabled
The host PC has multiple monitors
This worked correctly on the previous version of Steam Link before today's update

1.0.16 is an ancient version of Steam Link, please update to a current one.

The beta build (1.3.29) actually has fixes for a crash like this.

EDIT: ...I forgot the package file for the Pi uses its own separate version scheme. Bah.

I'm not sure what we can do about this. This seems like a limitation of the Pi hardware decoder.

In the meantime you can disable HEVC in the streaming settings and it'll use a software decoder which should work properly.
This should be fixed in the latest OS updates.
