Baxter Christmas's

Thats me!

Matthew and the "troll tree"

My parents may say that we didn't have much growing up, but us kids never felt it.
When we lived in Norwalk (just outside of LA), we had a little house with a big picture window that my mom would paint on birthdays and Christmas. I thought my mom was the best, and the most talented artist, and who doesn't love Snoopy and the little Woodstocks on their house?
Because my mom is so laid back, one year we noticed that in place of the angel or star, there was a Troll doll (remember when those were so popular? man, we were dumb!) And so, she just let us keep it there. We ALL remember the Troll doll tree, good times.
As a mom, it's only NOW that I realize all the hard work that mom's put in to make the holiday special. From the shopping, cleaning and cooking, its no small feat to create Christmas. But my mom did it all, and I am so thankful.
I also remember that my mom forgot to take our chocolate candy filled stockings down before starting a fire the fireplace...quite the chocolatey mess!
I also remember my mom and dad riding scooters Christmas morning, and playing with Skeletors castle and a Barbie RV...

My dad always waited until Christmas Eve to shop for my mom, and I thought I was the center of the universe to have him all to myself for one night. Because, in a litle girls eyes, her dad is the MOST important man to ever live, and I even remember thinking then as a little girl....

"my dad really must love my mom". That is just about the best gift he could ever give me.

So, thanks mom and dad for making Christmas special for all of us crazy kids!

A life well lived....

These are me and my cousins at Christmas...

This is my dad and my Grandma

This is my grandma warning Shayne to be good to me on my wedding day

My grandma, Veronica Baxter, passed away this morning after being sick for a long time. She was a good grandma when we were young. On tuesdays, us cousins would ride the bus to her house (btw, my cousins lived next door to me, and both grandmas lived in the same town..lucky!) and have cooking class. We made cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, and tarts. Going over to her house meant jumping on her mini trampoline, swimming in a vinyl pool in the back, and looking at all of her books and memorabilia of the English Royal Family. Oh how I loved Princess Diana! We all stayed the night the day of Princess Diana and Prince Charles wedding, all snuggled up in sleeping bags on her living room floor.

She called me "Kellie-wellie", and shared with us how she grew up in Sheffield, England. She came to England as a war bride to my grandpa, who was military police during WW2. The ultimate love story, to leave her family and friends for a new country, join the church, and to raise a family, what courage!

Michelle's Rice Pudding

I have tried 3 times with no success at making rice pudding in my new digital pressure cooker. Everyone swares it can be done on the internet, which makes the failure even worse!
Anyways, my experience with THIS recipe is that is turns out awesome every time. It is a great dessert to use those food storage staples, powdered milk, and rice.

Michelle Burton's Rice Pudding

3/4 c uncooked rice
2 c milk (divided)
1/3 c sugar
1/4 t salt
1 beaten egg
1 T butter
1/2 t vanilla
Bring 1 1/2 c water to a boil, and add rice and cook 20 min (reduce heat and cover). Combine 2 c. cooked rice, 1 1/2 c milk, sugar and salt in a new pan. Cook 15-20 min or until thick. Stir in remaining milk and beaten egg. Cook 2 min on med. Remove, and stir in butter and vanilla.

A Twinkle in my eye

I absolutely love the Christmas season! It just makes me so happy, and I also feel my heart swell with gratitude just a little more. There are a few things that put a twinkle in my eye this time of year...
1. Homemade English Tofee- my toffee recipe comes from my mom's great aunt, Violet, and it was secret for many years. We love it so, and think its the best. But I have broken the rule and

given out the recipe, so unless you don't make a million dollars selling it, I will gladly give it to you.

2. Trees on cars-I love the sight of Christmas trees being brough home from the lot tied to the tops of cars and vans...so very Norman Rockwell

3. Feliz Navidad-the song Feliz Navidad. When I hear that song, I can't help but laugh, and then sing it loudly. In our car the other day, we sang it creatively with our own hoots, and hollars, and a little scatting even.

4. Christmas lights-I really am a Clark Griswold at heart, and given the time and money, I would have every inch of my house covered in lights. I have heard some people say that house lights are obnoxious, and I disagree! Coming home at night as a kid to see YOUR house aglow, made my heart go pitter-pat, and I know my kids love it too!

5. Christmas themed baggies and cups-I know this is silly, but when I am in Target ane see the snowflake baggies, or snowmen on Solo plastic cups, I just love it! I just must buy them, because a peanut butter sandwich in a Christmas baggie is just the best!

Do fruit roll ups count as fruit?

Arizona has this healthy eating campaign, that included commercials. One just drives me nuts. The mom in the ad say that
"Anytime I leave the house, I always pack fruits and veggies. Always".
Are you for real lady? ALWAYS???
Because, for all of my planning, there have been times I have literally tossed back dinner rolls that I grabbed off the counter to the kids in the backseat.
I have even been known to toss a cheeseburger.
And, if I were completely honest, true veggies make it to my table at most 2 times a week, excluding potatoe dishes.
Heck, I haven't eaten a banana in years, cuz thats just gross....
And, clearly, she doesnt know, the unspoken rule of parenting....
dont' use terms like always or never...
It will come back to bite you in the butt, I can guarantee that.

The Elephant in the Room...pun intended

I picked up Shayne's Mens Health magazine and there was an article named "Why I Hate Fat People". I was intrigued, and so I read on.
In the article, it talked about fat(and please don't nag at me to not use that word) people are a social class that are discriminated against.
It also said that fat people hate fat people. Hmmm. I think that may be right.
I am not writing this blog post for everyone to say, "oh, you're not fat", or looking for any reassurance. And its not a pity party.
It's me, writing as someone who defines herself by her weight.
When I think of a describing word of myself, I think of "fat". If all the girls who HAD to shop at Lane Bryant were reallly honest with you, most of them would say the same thing. After all, they are in a "big girls" shop. NO ONE shops at Lane Bryant for fun.
When you are overweight, you do literally feel like the elephant in the room. You feel like you should wear a shirt that says "Yes, I know I am overweight". Because, if you admit it first, then no one can hurt you, you have already put it out there.
When you are oveweight, shopping isn't fun. Sure, I love jewelry and shoes...yeah, cuz theres no size issue there. Mall's arent fun...at all. Why would I want to go to the mall, where only 5% of the clothing in the entire space would fit me.
There are many phases and stages of how big girls think of themselves.
-the "who cares if I'm fat, I am really happy" stage. I drift in and out of this stage. Is it healthy? Aren't we supposed to teach our daughters to love themselves? I struggle with this, because we need to be healthy, emotionally and physically.
- the "if I lose weight, then my life will be perfect" stage. My husband will love me, my house will be cleaner, etc. Real denial there. But, its WAY easier to blame your life's problems on chunky thighs, and a big middle than explore the real problem.
-and then theres just plain denial, or just outright defeat. You really, really think that your clothes are shrinking, that a person like you could never succeed and conquer this demon.
So, why am I writing this? Because all of us know people who are overweight. All of us have thought "why don't they do something about it?", or "why don't they just exercise/or stop eating junk?". I am not asking for the world to accept obsesity, no way. But all of us have sisters, friends, moms or co-workers who live in a world where they literally feel like....
the elephant in the room.

Fall Ball 2010

Jordan is playing fall baseball right now. And anyone who knows me, knows that the schedule is pretty demanding. Baseball in general is just that way, but so is football, volleyball......
We are just about wrapping up the season, and so I took a couple pictures of Jordan this last game.
I can't believe how beautiful and strong my boy is. When I look out at him when he is on the pitchers mound, at third, or even in center field, I can't believe how brave he is, so confident.
We are so blessed to have three healthy and capeable kids. His coaches have told me what a great kid he is...respectful, helpful, and dependable.
Yeah, he's a pretty great kid.

How do your mom and dad roll?

This is a picture of my mom and dad in their Halloween outfits for the church Halloween party. It is easily one of my favorite pictures ever. One, because they look hilarious, and two, because it reminds me how lucky I was to have parents with a sense of humor! Many people in the ward didnt know who they were, and were probably a little scared.

Where does one come upon such articles of clothing may you ask? Well, when you live next door to a real life biker, who happens to be your uncle, thats how.

Living next door to Uncle Bob was unique. He scared the heck out of me with his lbig beard, and piercing blue eyes. And when one of us got hurt, he would yell out "quit your crying!"

On the other hand, he once picked my cousin Trina and I up on his Harley, Strawberry Shortcake lunchboxes and all.
And he was our go-to guy for banana seated bike repair.

I also learned much about life from his garage. Grease and metal shavings everywhere. And the art on the walls, well, I certainly hoped that I grew up to have boobies like those girls, but with much less hair...

Deciding to be happy...

I realize that I have a home, good health and great kids. But the reality of life is hard to miss...like, wham! right in the face sometimes.
My house is a wreck most days since I have been in school. You know that feeling where you are so overwhelmed that you dont know where to begin? I am ohsofamiliar with that right now.
What I am worried about...
-we are sooooo upside down in our house. I dont mean to say that its a contest, but I am pretty sure we beat anyone else out in Del Lago for biggest financial mistake and there is nothing we can do when we owe soooo much more than the stupid house is worth.
-my parents, and brothers are dealing with severe lack of employment opportunities. Because we are close, I worry about this daily as some have lost homes, and my heart really hurts beause of this. How in the world can we help them, when we worry about our future?
-I worry about the cost of my education, whether its worth it in the run.

I am hesitant to write how I feel sometimes, beause I dont want to hurt my family.
I know that it would make my parents sad if they knew how upset I am, but I can't hide it either. When I think of all the challenges my family is facing, I am a kid again, and I am helpless.
The Health Challenge I signed up for turned out to be a "gain weight" challenge that I won, yay me!
This is not to say that I do not experience happiness on a daily basis.
Exercising makes me happy. Freshly bathed children do, too. My personal prayers remind me I am not alone. Sleeping with Shayne next to me is a blessing.
So, if I seem distant lately, or just plain out of it, I am just in a funk. I realize now that it will pass, and that I just have to decide to be happy.

Hello, Newman....

Newman. On Seinfeld, he was Jerry Seinfeld's annoying nemesis.
I used to have a nemesis. Used to.
This person just didn't seem to like me (what????), and so I decided that I wasn't going to like her. I know, real mature.
And it drove me crazy that this person didn't seem to like me. PEOPLE LIKING ME IS, LIKE, MY THING! or so I thought.
Every time I saw my nemesis, it bugged me.
Here is the funny thing. She and I are quite similar. We like the same things, same people, and struggle with some of the same struggles. woooooo-ooooo, oh yeah, there's irony there.
I just decided I didn't WANT to have a Newman anymore. It made me feel bad when I saw her ( and we have overlapping circles of friends, so that was fairly often), and I really do know she's a good person, we just may never be best buds.

So here's the lesson...
-we don't all have to be best buds
-we DO need to cut each other some slack, sometimes being friendly is just too much that day
-we may need to make a decision to LET IT GO...fake it til you make it
-don't take everything so personal...the world doesn't revolve around you Kellie!

Kellie Farrell-Christian and Mormon, sorry if thats offensive to some

OKAY.....
In my social work/group work class, we are a melting pot of sorts. Some with tattoos, some that smoke, some married, some Christian, and some not.
I am totally cool with that. Not cool with having to walk through the smokers outside, but generally, I like everyone and like my class.
There is one lady in particular who said has been vocal about her belief in Christ, how her faith is important to her, etc. I thought in the beginning that maybe she was laying it on a bit thick, but I also secretly admired her for being so brazen about professing her belief. Other than that, a couple people have said that they have taught catechism(sp?), went to church, and defined themselves as "child of God" when asked the question "who are you?"
Certainly not talking in tongues, singing praises and shouting Hallelujah.
Theres a reason why I told you that, hang in there....
One day, we played a game where you had to write down a "would you rather" question for someone else to pick. Like would you rather eat a booger, or sing in public...you get the picture. When I drew a paper, my script was "I would rather not hear Christians prattle on about their beliefs in class". Huh. I guess this person thought they would rather ruin the game in order to get their point across, cowardly on a unsigned paper, but nonetheless.
I knew who wrote this. He is someone who has talked about their past addiction, and I very quickly got the vibe that he had a chip on his shoulder.
Well, today, he took it upon himself to declare to the class during his personal review that he was sick of the ego-christ attitude in class, and didn't want to hear about christian faith, etc, etc.
He went on very loudly, for a couple minutes.
Have you ever had that heartburn, heart racing, flop sweat, mind racing feeling when someone was saying something that bothered you? Yeah, that was me.
So, at the very end of class, my professor asked if anyone else had anything to add. "Yes", I heard myself say.
I turned to Michael. I told him that the tattoos he wears are a symbol of what he believes. Christians are a people that beleive that their very fiber is their faith in Jesus Christ. We don't necessarily have a marking indicating that, and so it sometimes comes out in conversation.
I told him that I was sorry that he made a CHOICE to be offended by Christian beliefs. I make a choice to NOT be offended that I have to LOOK at those tattoos, walk through choking smoke, or listen to rehab stories. I am actually inspired weekly by his and others courage to oversome the suffocating grasp of addiction. The thing is, I have not heard Michael say one thing he BELIVED in, only what he didn't want to HEAR from others.
There are many in this world whose MOTIVE is to squash others BELIEFS, instead of asserting ones of their own.
I don't care if you worship the sun, Buddha, Allah, or Mary...to be honest, I like hearing what makes you YOU.
I was shaking, SHAKING. He actually was responding VERY loudly, I guess he thinks that the louder he talks, the more compelling his arguement.
After class, several people came up to me and thanked me for saying what I said.
I realize that religion doesn't have a place in certain places, including school. I realize that I also will not be able to help others in the field of social work, and may need to refer them to somene else because of what I believe.
But, NO ONE can tell me how to define myself, or talk. Jesus Christ is the example for how I think, speak, and act. The very makeup of my physical body. I will never act in HIS name to be hurtful, or argue belief systems. I will not engage in bible bashing. But, I will NOT censor myself to appease one who is being hateful.
Satan wants so very much for the disciples of Christ to keep their mouths shut.
No, I will not.

The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose
I will not, I cannot, desert to his foes;
That soul, through all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no never, I'll never, no never,
I'll never, no never, no never forsake!

Cupcake dreams...

I am a food blog junkie. I am also a lover of certain food shows, my faves are -

Diners, Drive In's and Dives

The Great Food Truck Race

Barefoot Contessa

I told Shayne that I wish I could have a food truck that serves sweets. Kelliekakes.

I want to wear cute, colorful aprons and drive around town selling my sweet treats.

What would I sell? I have given that thought....on the menu....

grasshopper brownies

big, fat, frosted sugar cookies

rice pudding

chocolate chip cookies

and of course, cupcakes! my favorite is a devil's cream with buttercream frosting

(hmmm, a chocolate theme, perhaps?)

But don't rule out fancy, schmancy flavors, a blue cheese cupcake? hmmmmm.....

Baking makes me feel so good. When I have the time, it is a destressor for sure. Not much time for that lately, but someday, I know that the time will be there.

So, in the meantime, I will just daydream, watch my shows and read my fave blogs, and plan my food truck dessert menu in my mind.

Once Upon a Time...

Don't you sometimes look around and say, "how did I get here?"
I wonder who's great idea was it for me to go back to school. Oh yeah, mine. But it was something I would talk about that would happen in the future. And now, my number is up.
I was at Anna M's house this week, and she was showing me these awesome curtains that she had made. I told her I was jealous, that is no understatement. And I am not insinuating that Anna isn't a busy lady, she very much is! But, somehow, curtains just aren't happening for me lately.
Neither is painting walls, making cards, scrapbooking, photography, yard work, exercise, shopping for fun, sewing, plucking my eyebrows, mopping floors, exfoliating, trying new recipes, and much, much more.
The honest truth is that if Shayne said he felt like we needed to have one or two more kids, I would be ALL OVER THAT. I feel like I have had to leave a piece of me behind as I accept the reality of no more babies, kindergartners, or just adding more Farrell's in general.
But, like I have said before, the no's have it.
I am also becoming aware that I am getting older with each birthday. Weird, beause 34 seemed so far away when I was a mommy to two at the age of 23.
I am trying hard to not wish my life away, a day or a week at a time. Because this phase most of us are all in, the working hard, planning, raising kids, saving money, fulfilling callings, is really tough! I will sware to anyone that the years of two toddlers was way EASIER than weeks with school, church and 7 sports games/practices all in seven days.

Maybe our memory will erase all the stress, and we will look back and say
"Once upon a time..." with no regrets.
Here's hoping that happens.

Fears

So, today in my social work/group work class, we had an icebreaker activity that was "what is your deepest fear?"
Well, I will freely admit that I fear people not liking me and letting others down. This has actually been a rough month in that family members have experienced heartache that I dearly, dearly wish I could fix. Deepest fear realized.
Others in the group shared their fears, and my heart was touched. Now, you must realize that a good number of the group members have addictive histories.
One person revealed that he was worried that his fiance, who he loves and adores, will leave him and realize what a loser he is.
Another said that she has a deep fear that someone will break into her house and kill her. I actually have that fear also.
The one that struck me the most was this...he said that he was afraid of going to hell.
Now, from what I know of this person, he has made some bad choices. But, none so bad that he would go to hell....I know that, but he doesnt.
Imagine having the real belief that you are such a bad person that you are doomed to hell. I really wanted to go up to him, hug him, and bear my testimony that the Atonement makes it possible to make up for our bad choices. That Heavenly Father loves us so much that He provided the way, a Savior who suffered his sins already, and like the picture, waits for him to unlock the door.
This class experience has opened my eyes and heart. I am learning to judge less. Listen more. And look at others for the amazing strides that they are making to a new life!

Because we all could use a good laugh...

What the what?
I found this picture at my mom's house, and seriously, I laughed out loud.
I am certain that this is 1994ish, and I probably thought that I was too cute as I was heading out to a dance or on a date.
I have joked that I love big hair, and that my style is "jersey-lite"...um, yeah.
What can I say, I likes to "jack it up".

Unfair Comparisons

The other day I was at a friends house for an Activity Day Girl activity. Another mom and I were chatting, and she commented on how clean the house was compared to hers.
I reminded her that we all put our best foot forward, and thats one reason maybe the house looked so great.
And then we discussed our dirty kitchen floors, and how we would be so embarassed if someone came over right then.
Why do we compare our WORST to everyone else's BEST? Its the day you are in yoga pants that you spot your friend at the grocery all glammed up that you beat yourself up. She wears yoga pants too, just not on THAT particular day.
It's easier said than done, but let's cut ourselves a break!

Eleven

Kennedy is eleven as of today. Shs is the last of the friends to turn eleven, and that makes her officially a tween I guess. Kennedy is sweet, and very funny. She writes essays that amaze me because they are so funny and well written. She helps around the house without being asked to because she really, truly, likes to be nice.
Here are a few of my favorites of my Kennedy Ann.

Max and Ruby

Every morning Drew and I watch Max and Ruby while he waits for his ride to school.
For the record, I really don't like this show and I will tell you why.
Ruby is the older sister, and Max is her turd brother.
For example, every show is Ruby telling Max what NOT to do...
And Max NEVER listens.
And also, why is Ruby ALWAYS in charge, she's like 10 judging by her bunny outfits.
Where is Ruby's mom...watching Oprah or is she on Facebook?
I understand your frustration, Ruby. Except, in my episode, I put tabasco in his Hawaiin punch.

A watched pot never boils....but it sure is getting hotter!

I love that saying "a watched pot never boils". And that is so true for trying to lose this darn weight! Certainly I didn't become overweight overnight, and so losing it will also be the same.
I have a bad habit of weighing myself twice daily..mainly so I can beat myself up, or justify a splurge. Funny, I weighed myself all the way to 100lbs overweight!

So, Andrea W made me promise that I wouldn't weigh myself until the end of the health challenge she and I are doing. Well, that was just asking too much, so I struck a deal to only do it weekly.
So, I have no clue if I am making progress this week, but I need to have faith in the process. I really AM eating fruit (thats amazing), and drinking the dreaded water (and am even getting used to it) And not to mention the challenge to read my scriptures daily. I am super excited to finally read my Book of Mormon in one big chunk, and will make it almost all the way through!

And truly, I am so thankful for the bikers on Spanish trail, and all of my athletic friends! What a wonderful influence and inspiration in my life, and I am CERTAIN that is one of the reasons I needed to move here!

Are you there Oprah? It's me, Kellie

I am not a huge Oprah fan to be sure. Frankly, I think the show's main goal is to have guests who serve to elevate "The Oprah" and her idea's (ideals?).
We are talking about the woman who coined the term "va-jay-jay", and had a show where
Dr. Oz told us that our poopies should be 'C' shaped.
What?
However, she had the author of "Women, Food and God" on, and she DID say something that was worth considering.
She said we will never acheive our goals by beating ourselves up.
Or something like that, you get the gist.
Hmmm, you mean using the word gravy-ish to describe my thighs isn't productive?
She also said that we think that shaming ourself is how we evoke change, and thats wrong.
From the world's worst self-depreciating joker, I do think she's onto something.
So, okay Oprah, I had a "lightbulb moment" and now I can be my "authentic self"...kind of.

And here's a link to the funniest moments on Oprah, women going bonkers over ipods and crap.
Oprah's Favorite Things
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/11/20/oprahs-favorite-things-th_n_73588.html
Seriously, these women are out of control, and some of them are having a religious experience over free stuff.

You can't make this stuff up

So this morning, I asked Drew to the table several times so I could get him breakfast.
Finally, I notice he was sitting at the table. As I was pouring the milk and cereal he says...
"how long does it take to make breakfast anyway?"
what?
Hecklers at the breakfast table.
No respect, no respect.

Flartskies, Diamonds and Tears: Life on a Treadmill

I am trying to make good on the goal I set about going to the gym once the kids started school.
Three times this week, pretty good so far.
I start out on the eliptical, then make myself run a mile on the treadmill.

Diamonds-My friend, Laura, pointed out that when I exercise, I am usually wearing diamond earrings and necklace. I guess I never thought about it, but, from the girl who would describe her hair as 'jersey-lite', its that only appropriate.
Flartskies- Everyone flarts. I am sorry. Even pretty, teeny weeny cute girls let one rip every so often. And exercise makes your body all warm and loose. I think I flarted once (I was listening to my Ipod, and therefore, if I can't hear it, it didn't happen) because the lady behind me laughed. Woopsie!
Tears-I have gotten choked up listening to songs while exercising. For example, my favorite song of all time is 'Small Wonders' by Rob Thomas

Let it go, let it roll right off your shoulder
Don?t you know the hardest part is over?
Let it in, let your clarity define you
In the end we will only just remember how it feels
Our lives are made in these small hours
These little wonders, these twists and turns of fate
Time falls away but these small hours
These small hours still remain

So, I am listening to this, pre-pre menstral, last kid off to first grade...choked up.
ALthough, I was sweating pretty fierce, so I don't think anyone noticed.

Time on the treadmill or eliptical gives you time to think, plan, dream, worry, remember.
I think: man I love Sara Bareilles, my underwear is all crazy, did I just flart?, I hope I lose weight today, gotta plan music time, oh crap, whats for dinner....

In the end, I am glad that phase of my life affords me the flexibility to go workout. I totally remember the days of pushing a double stroller in Kentucky heat, picking up toys every 5 feet.
So, here's to diamonds, tears, and a few flartskies too!

"Thank you for being a friend....

...travel down the road and back again, your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant....''

(doesn't everyone know the words to that song, or was I the only 11 year old watching a show about sassy seniors and their busy lives...)

I was a pretty cool adolescent.

My family has joined the YMCA here in Tucson. Shayne needs the laps for swimming, and I really need to exercise indoors. I come home with massive, pounding headaches and bad heat rashes from the summer heat, so I needed an indoor alternative.

I decided to attend the water aerobics class. When I showed up, I am pretty sure that I would have been the only one with my original hips and teeth, so I opted out.

Then, Andrea W. decided she would come along and try a "Total Body" class with me. After 15 minutes, and rolling our heads for a minimun of 6 times, stifling a laugh for me, became too much. After all, we had kids in the day care, and need to burn like 10, 000 calories in the hour that we had.

I told Andrea that she could be Blanche and I would be Dorothy. I have always felt like the Dorothy...not the biggest looker, but with a healthy sense of humor.

But then again, Sophia was my favorite.

Blanche: Dorothy, what do you think I oughta do with my bed?

Dorothy: Put it in the Smithsonian, Blanche. Its got more miles on it than the Spirit of St. Louis!

"and if you threw a party, invited everyone you knew, you would see the biggest gift would from me, and the card attached would say, thank you for being a friend...."

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, guess I'll eat some worms...

Because, some days arent unicorns and butterflies, and that's OKAY!
This was the theme song of my last week. Pity party much? A full grown grumpy mama, thats what we had on our hands. Actually, it was really a two day grump-fest, but for the sake of telling a story, I will go with the whole week thing.
LOSING-I hate to admit it, but I hate LOSING(is that terrible?)! When we play volleyball on Wednesdays, it stinks to be on the other end of several ladies atomic serves(which I admire). When the score reaches 0 to 10, I am not really having a ton of fun...I'm just sayin'.
POUNDAGE-I must have heard somewhere that theres an eating contest, because I have packed on a solid 10lbs. I have earned it too. I have had a love affair with Cheetos that can't be explained...and the orange fingers to prove it.
SCHOOL- I realized that I read the discussion rubric wrong, because I got some F's last week. Not cool, so many tears and a good headache were had. Spoke with professor, now I know what he expects.
SLEEP- Or, lack of it. When Shayne is gone, you can expect that I am still awake around 2am. My anxiety has gotten worse over the years, and I don't know what to do about it.
FRIENDS- I need to accept whatever particular friends can give to the friendship, and not worry about the rest. Live in the moment. Its hard, even at 34 years old, not to get hurt feelings or feel forgotten. This goes back to my gripe about not having sisters, and thats not fair, and at the end of the day, I am still NOT the sister, just the friend, sniff, sniff...
Speaking of sniff, sniff....ALLERGIES...enough said.
So, as you can see, I am a big baby. There are just those days when ONE thing goes wrong, that you are crying to husband, who, by the way, doesn't know what to do with his hysterical wife. "I'm fat, stupid, so and so doesn't care about me, tired". Us girls like to lump in all of our woes into one cry.
I'm better this week. I cleaned the garage, we made a run to the city dump (things like that make me so happy!) ,Shayne isn't traveling, my grades have improved, moving forward, bring on the unicorns...

Look at me...I'm a grownup!

Don't you sometimes wonder how you got to the age you're at? I am pretty sure that I was in my friend Michelle's room, listening to MCHammer just yesterday (and considering if I could get away with the Debbie Gibson hat look)
Now, I am a mom, paying taxes and planning for retirement. In all the thirteen years of marriage, we have ALWAYS had TWO car payments. Pretty dumb. Today I just paid off my FIRST CAR EVER...WOOHOO!!! The truck is finally paid off, and the van will be at the end of this year. Major milestones in the Kellie financial planning world.
I used to really be into new cars, and that has changed. My van is well broken in (stains on the ceiling and paint peeling) but that is so okay with me. I would love a new suburban, but I just don't want to pay a $600 car payment now, gulp. Not fun being car-poor.
So, the plan is to drive it till it dies. As long as I have air conditioning, and a radio that works, I'm good. Don't mind that petrified chicken nugget under the seat...its paid for!

The End...

..of kindergarten, 5th grade, 6th grade, baseball, volleyball...whew! Spring has been a MAJOR challenge with my schooling, and the kids activities. I handled this stress with much whining....and eating (bleh!) Baseball is a total commitment, with some weeks having 4-5 baseball practices/games in the evening. Not too easy when Shayne was gone to schlep the other two and be out until 10. At any rate, Jordan makes me proud because he is a respectful, supportive and positive player.

Kennedy finished 5th grade in Mrs Ambrose's class. What can I say about Kennedy? She makes her bed everyday without being asked (huh?), loves to accessorize, and is mastering the art of texting. She is funny, helpful, and takes school and volleyball seriously. Shayne and I look at each other and wonder how we got so lucky sometimes.

And then there's Drew. My little Drew-bearski-boo. I am conflicted about the end of kindergarten. The schedule stinks, because as soon as you get into town, you have to rush home to meet the bus. But, getting that little boy off the bus is the best part of the day! His little face is like sunshine to me, and I will miss our lunches out and the quiet time we have together before the kids get home.

The kids are already enjoying the treats of summer such as swimming, day camps, and popsicles. I am in summer school, and am just counting down the weeks (sociology and macroeconomics...boring!) until the semester is done.

*BTW... the ShayneDiet does work if you stick with it. I lasted a whole 4 days, lost 5 pounds and have probably gained then back. Oh well, life goes on.

W.W.S.E.

W.W.S.E. stands for What Would Shayne Eat. Yeah, SHayne, my husband that is a living, breathing Biggest Loser right in the bed next to me.
Its funny to me that I am so amazed at a program(Biggest Loser) when I am married to a success story. But, its one of those things, that because I love Shayne, and I see him everyday, that I didn't get what happenening right before my eyes.
Shayne eats clean. Like REALLY clean. So, I am trying really hard (like, kicking and screaming really) to eat like him.
SHayne doesn't eat-
pasta
white rice
lettuce
beans
regular bread
and all the rest of the stuff that is obviously bad.
He loves Subway, Flat Out wraps, Orowheat Sandwich THins, and for fun, he slices tomatoes or cucumbers....woo-hoo!
What does that leave me? PROTEIN! Oh, happy day, how many ways can you cook chicken and prepare egg beaters. I'll let you know.
I've shared my weight with Shayne, its a little embarassing, but seriously, who am I kidding (he's seen me wrestle into a girdle on sunday, the mystery is gone).
There really isn't any magic pill is there. More calories out than in, blah, blah, blah.
I've made some goals, fingers crossed.
Just need to find my "WWSE" lanyard...

oh no you didn't!

I got this in the mail a couple weeks and had to post it. Seriously, nails filed down to look like what...talons? And the funny thing is, theres roses painted on there. Oh, that makes it feminine and classy. Just the right accessory to your favorite Ann Taylor outfit.

Imagine me leading the sweet, little primary kids in "Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam" with my claws of death...

Monday resolutions...and other randomness

THis weekend I was able to go to the Mesa temple for a special family sealing. It was so wonderful, and I count myself lucky to have been there. I had never been inside the Mesa temple before. The walls are grey marble, and I kept thinking that I wanted to press my face against the wall to feel the coolness (I am a weirdo, I know)
Also, Shayne went shopping for a wetsuit. The experience of me, and one other person fitting my husband into a wetsuit is a memory that keeps me laughing. Poor Shayne, he was sweating so badly, his socks were soaked through!
Oh, to the resolutions part. I am going to try really hard to eat fruit every day and journal my food. Thats it. Wish me luck...

Oh dear, this post could get me in trouble...

What happened in the last 20 years, that has turned formerly simple things to GIANT, OVERPLANNED, OVERDONE, MANDITORY extravaganzas?
For one thing, I am the room mom for two of my kids classes. One was voluntary, the other was guilt motivated. I DO appreciate my teachers, I TELL them so. I help in class where I can....and I think that teacher appreciation week is a nice idea. Cards from kids...good. The class gift...once upon a time, you could do this if you WANTED to. Now, its forced on the room moms to beg and plead with the other parents to contribute to a class gift.
Now, this week includes 4 planned lunches (one of which I have to plan), flower day, bead day, organizing a basket to auction off, organizing people to man a tatoo/cotton candy booth....

The same goes for church. Every activity has morphed formerly simple get togethers into major events. Girls camp is just one of the many examples of activities gone huge.
Now, its turned into a Super Bowl of planning, stress, crafts, tshirts, themes, stress, matching doo-dads, and more stress.
I feel so much for the leaders who have to plan these events, all the while, maintaing their own family and sanity! "Bye family, see you around August...."

Who's to blame? Certainly, none of us woke up one morning wondering how we could make our lives more complicated and draining. It happened when NO ONE was looking.
I blame us women. Yup, we are overachievers. And the internet. Blame it on global warming, or blame it on the commercials where people dance around with Swiffer products.
I LIKE doing nice things. I LIKE being helpful. I APPRECIATE the work and effort that goes into things like fundraising, school, church, etc.
Helping can make me feel JOYFUL. But, I just wonder sometimes if the original intent is lost on all the hoopla...

Babies

Many of our friends have had babies lately. For some reason, I thought these friends were done having kids (they never told me that, I just decided that). I have to say, this has thrown me off a little. I was done, and therefore, everyone else who is friends with me should also be done. (READ: I am the center of the universe...in my mind)
I loved my babies...a LOT. I mean loved ON THEM. I never wear lipstick when I have babies, because I want to kiss 'em all day long, and I did. I chewed on their little chubby baby thighs and arms, blew zzrbrts (thats a raspberry to the rest of you) on their bellies, and talked baby talk to them all day long.It bothers me that I never get to have that again. Sure, I am an aunt and someday a grandma, but I can never have that same relationship again. Besides, thats weird to be kissin' on someone elses baby like that.
This morning at volleyball, I got to hold Rachel B.'s little baby boy this morning. Heavenly. He has the cutest little hamster eyes, chubby cheeks, and he smelled like my favorite thing in the world, LAUNDRY!
If it is possible to be a baby huffer, I am guilty as charged.
You can't turn someone's 'no' into a 'yes' and so we are done, especially when it comes to deciding on having a nother child. I know that it is all the stress of school and life, that I am thinking I want to go back in time, when my babies were little, their messes were pretty contained, and I sang "I am a Child of God" while rocking a sleepy baby.

His Perfect Love

And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
I say unto you, that likewise a joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
Luke 15 6-7
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend an Alchoholics Anonomous meeting for a school assignment. Very humbling. I sat and listened as people told their stories, experiences and struggles. These people had not made good choices, by their own admission. Lost homes, families, jobs and health. But, I felt that they had a true desire to support one another. That they would be there to help one another. Even though they had failed dozens and dozens of times, they would always welcome each other back. There were where they were supposed to be last night. One day at a time was the theme.
And it made me think of our Savior, Jesus Christ. After all we have done, he still has faith in us that we can make things right. Even after we have made the same mistake over and over..., our family and friends might not even believe in us, He still does. Because He loves us with a perfect love that we could never be worthy of, but can fully enjoy if we let him in.

Yumminess

I made brownies for a friends birthday. Well, if I was totally honest, I made them for her, and for me too. I love these brownies. They are a little bit of work in that you are making TWO frostings, but ohmygosh they are so yum-O.

Grasshopper Brownies

3 cups sugar
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa
1 ½ cups melted butter
6 eggs
2 ¼ cup flour
2 teaspoons vanilla
¾ teaspoons salt

Mint Frosting
1 pound powdered sugar
½ teaspoon peppermint oil
Green food coloring
½ cup butter, softened
2 tablespoons light karo syrup
1 teaspoons vanilla
Dash salt

Chocolate Frosting
1 pound powdered sugar
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon vanilla
7 tablespoons butter, softened 1/3 cup boiling water

Combine all brownie ingredients in bosch with cookie paddles. Mix only until creamy (be careful not to over mix). Prepare a large cookie sheet with parchment liner ( I just grease my pan) . Pour in mixture. Bake 350º for 22-25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely. Frostings: Combine and mix thoroughly the ingredients for each frosting (may need to add extra liquid for creamier texture). Frost brownies first with mint frosting. Put into refrigerator for 10 minutes. Frost with chocolate frosting. Cut into squares and enjoy!

Never say never...

Once upon a time (when I was a very young and delusional young mother) there were several things I said I would NEVER (or always) do.
-my kids would NEVER wear liscenced superhero or character T-shirts
-my kids wouldn't go a day without brushing their teeth
-my daughter should always have her hair "just so". matching bow included.
-my kids would NEVER behave like little turds in front of my friends
-I would never become one of those "bedraggled looking" moms I saw with 3 or 4 kids hanging off of them, the horror!
-I would faithfully wash my sheets EVERY week, ha!

Funny how time changes, or, wears you down. Humbles you. Wakes you up to reality a bit. Makes you less judgy of the mom who's kids nails CLEARLY need to be clipped. Who's kid looks like there's syrup in his/her hair...jelly? hair gel?

I swore that by this point in our marriage, my house would look like a Pottery Barn catalog. Guess what? Kids dont give a flying fig about their bathroom having a 'nantucket' feel. Surfing penguins....cool mom! And when their little faces shine when they don that Captain America t-shirt, you get over that illusion you had of your boys ONLY wearing polos and seersucker shorts.
If this works for you, and your kids, super! I just found that I was driving myself nuts over this stuff.

So what? WHo cares? Ask yourself...am I a good friend? do my kids know I love them? do I have fun and laugh at life, and myself?

Note to self...get over it, and NEVER say NEVER!

A week in my kitchen...

This is the second week that these kids have been on break, and man can they eat! I feel like I do the dishes, and wipe down the counters all day long! And, unfortunately for me, my kids think that they live at Chili's because they are "tired" of eating ham and turkey sandwiches..Are you kidding me? I lived on peanute butter and jelly, and Hawaiian Punch almost every day of my young life, and LIKED IT~!

I made a salad that I had at Heidi V's house, and it is so wonderful!!!! My kids ate seconds and we all fought over thirds. It is a spinach and pasta salad, and here is the link...
http://sisterscafe.blogspot.com/2008/04/spinach-pasta-salad-with-toasted.html
You have to make it with Heidi's balsamic dressing, it is great...
1 c oil (I use 1/2 c, and add 1/4 c water to make it lighter)
1/4 c balsamic vinegar
2 T chopped onion (she uses dried)
1 t salt
1 t sugar
1 t ground mustard
1 t dry basil
1/2 t oregano
1/4 t pepper
2 cloves garlic (use fresh, its so worth it)

I don't post recipes unless I can completely vouch that they are 1. really yummy 2. easy

I also made turkey meatballs this week. I have to say, that we really don't eat pasta here much, so when I make meatballs, I pour speghetti sauce on them and we eat them on broccoli. (And then we pig out on things like crackers and tortilla chips, we arent perfect!) It is because us Farrell's could eat our WEIGHT in pasta, and that aint' good friends.
Here is my tried-and-true turkey meatball recipe...
1 1/4 lb turkey BREAST (like Jennie-O, it comes in the package in that amount)
1 egg ( I used egg beaters)
1 c bread crumbs
1 T worcestershire sauce ( harder to say~)
1 onion, chopped pretty small
I used my pampered chef cookie dough ball scoop, and put them on a greased sheet, 350 for 20 min.
Here is also a little tip...buy yourself a box of latex gloves because for things like shaping a meatloaf, or mixing meatballs, its easier to use your hands and without gloves that is way gross.
Also good for chopping jalapeno's. Yup, I am the dummy that has wiped her eye after choppin' chili's.

Tonight I am making ham and cheese stromboli, which is so stinking great!
I buy the frozen bread loaves, and defrost 2
Make them into a giant 12x24ish rectangle
Brush 1 beaten egg all over
Top with lunch meat ham, and a minumin of 2 c swiss cheese, a little garlic or onion powder
Roll up like a cinnamon roll, pinch the sides, put on a cookie sheet (it won't fit on unlesss you curve it) and bake like 40 min at 375.
You kids will love you for it!

And thats it, next week back to last minute Subway dinner runs, and eggs for dinner...

I am a lucky girl!

This has been a rough week. It's been super busy with all the mom stuff...house, kids, sports, church, yada, yada.... The low was that I misread a deadline and threw away an 'A' grade. I vented about it on Facebook, and got lots of nice comments and support. (See, FB can be a good thing!)

This leads me to why I am posting....my good friend and 'running sensei', Mindy P., arrived at my door this afternoon with flowers and candy, ROLLO! Beautiful daffodils and tulips, the kids helped to pick them out, she said. All because I had had a hard week.

I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy! Although I missed out on getting a sister, I am so extremely blessed that Heavenly Father sent me friends who are there to lift me up, teach me, make me laugh, and seek to make my life better.

Mindy, you are a blessing to me, and anyone who knows you. Thanks!

...and she's back!

Yay, the aforementioned meds kicked in, woo-hoo! Ended up being a wonderful day, and here's why...
-I slept in. Like until 9am this morning. Well, actually I just refused to get out of bed. Yeah, I heard screaming outside my door, I just ignored it. I have been getting like NO SLEEP this whole week, and so I made up for it.
-I made cards this afternoon. Scrapbooking and crafting in general just make me feel good. I love carefully creating cards and get the warm fuzzies when i get to send them off..., love in an envelope!
-I MADE myself go run the Del Lago loop. Not super far (maybe 3.2miles?), and for not running as much as I would like to, did pretty good.
-Nice hot bath. Kellie's recipe for fantastic bath experience=Diet Dr Pepper, 2 cookies, new Creating Keepsakes mag for reading, the phone....blissful
-And, I just ordered a wrap dress in True Navy from Lands End. Fingers crossed it fits. I truly believe in the power of a wrap dress, feminine, comfy, classic, ....life changing! j/k
So there you have it...sleep+create+run+bath+shopping=happy Kellie

Defeated

Has it been enough time since my last whiney blog post to post a whiney blog post???
Aren't there days where you just feel defeated? That is totally where I am right now. Every day I make goals, and by the end of the day, I am just glad to have survived!
There were years where I painted, sewed and crafted pretty regularly. And that was when my babies were little. I currently have two bolts of fabric slated to become curtains....someday. But its one of those things, the walls need to be painted first, and before that, the plaster needs to be fixed, and by the way, the grout in the kitchen floor looks horrendous....hope I still like the fabric in 10 or so years.
And then there is the backyard. I worked my hiney off ripping trees and bushes out. Felt like a mighty, mighty warrior. Okay, now what? I need to haul off tons of rocks, to regrade the ground, dig trenches for sprinklers, put in extra valves....maybe when Shayne is retired.
The kids need to be fed everyday, the nerve! What's that, AND you want clean clothes???And, I have learned the hard way that I must do homework every day to hopefully get 'B's in my classes. Its the little league, volunteering at school, driving "into town". library runs, that keep us all pretty dang busy.
I have these weeks where I just feel beat down, and then, next week I could be super-obnoxiously positive about life. Now, where's my Ritalin, mommy needs her uppers...

Loyal

The other day, as I was reading on of my favorite food blogs, and she posted about "the best caramel popcorn". Well now, I'm thinking I already OWN the best caramel popcorn recipe, so I will just show HER and test it out (like, seriously, how would she even know). Two hours later, and many batches of cruddy popcorn later, I realize that my recipe, for me, is the best, and I just wasted my time. Caramel popcorn recipe, can you ever forgive me????
There are things like recipes and products, that for me, when I find the right one, I am just not interested in trying out anything else. Yummiest banana bread, check. Best english toffee, check. Wheat bread, check. I can not tell you how many dinner roll recipes I have tried, and I always come back to the same conclusion, MY ROLLS ARE THE BEST!!!(to me, anyways)
I am loyal to products too. Even if it is a great coupon or offer, I will generally pass it up, because I like what I like. Here are some examples...
Sour Cream-Daisy Brand sour cream is the best, hands down. Sorry Shamrock cows.
Taco sauce-(I realize that is a random product, but I use it a lot)-has to be La Victoria(must be the sugar in it like I like)
speaking of sugar...Spaghetti Sauce-Prego
Ranch dressing-here's where I am a snob, homemade is the only way to go
Hairspray-you all know I love BIG hair(closer to heaven, ya'll!)-I have tested MANY aerosol hairsprays out, take it from me-Aussie Instant Freeze, cement hard
Mascara-Maybelline Great Lash, good ole' pink and green
Soap-gotta be Dove bar soap, bring's out Shayne's sensitive side
Detergent-Gain ( I am a borderline laundry huffer, and its the soap that brings me the most "joy")
Tampons-hey, they are a part of life-Kotex, cuz' my momma said so
Perfume-its been my signature for years now, Ralph Lauren Romance
tennis shoes-Asics all the way, official shoe of plus size women everywhere, just kidding
Toothpaste-plain ole Crest PASTE, no whitening, gel, and sprinkles don't belong in toothpaste!

I also do not like going to ANY OTHER Fry's, Target or Costco than MY REGULAR LOCATIONS!!! I just can't enjoy it because I don't know where anything is. I will drive past a Fry's just to go to mine....

And to be honest, I really don't like trying out new resterants(how do you spell that???) I would rather Shayne try them out, and report back to me, and then I will decide.

So, what things are you loyal to?

Jordan turns 12!

He is so handsome!

Jordan was the cutest, sweetest toddler in the world!

I know I shouldn't take a picture of him praying, but I couldn't help it!

My sweet boy is turning 12!!!! I truly can't believe it, that means I am getting older too, ugh. From the beginning, he was the best baby. He was also such a good toddler, he wasn't the toy grabber or biter, althought he did cut a hole in the side of our couch and shoved toys inside.
Jordan-speak:
He said that the grass was too "knife-y" to lay on
He said that ice cream was "lick-ety"
When Kennedy got shots, and I had him in the room (he was 2 1/2) he cried "my baby!"
When Kennedy broke a glass ornament, he ran up to me and said "baby broke the dingbell!"
As Shayne was eating a brownie (he was 3), he asked "is that poop?"
Jordan was a sunbeam and needed to say the opening prayer in sharing time. So he walked to the front, and got down on his knees to pray.

I got this email last month from his teacher...

Hi,
Thank you both for having an awesome son. He is respectful,
hardworking, and always willing to help.

Keep it up Jordan.
Thanks so much,
Fred Nelson

I am very proud of him. He is kind and helpful, and loves to help me when I babysit baby's for friends. He is funny, and I love that he is at the age now where we can joke around, and I can embarass him a little.

Happy Birthday Jordan! You are a true blessing!

Renaissance (Not)Fair

Lately, I have heard advertisements for the Renaissance Fair up in Phoenix. We, however, will NOT be going to this festival of weirdo's...let me tell you why.
We took the kids back when Jordan was 3 and Kennedy was 1, to the Phoenix Renaissance Fair. It had been years since I had been, seemed like a great idea.
Well, spring in Arizona can be freezing, or it can be freakin hot. It was hot that year. It is not a great thing to see people eating on giant turkey legs in the hot sun. Not to mention, the beer is flowing, so insert mildly buzzed to flat out drunk people. Oh yeah, and Kennedy puked on me so imagine me covered in that for the rest of the afternoon.
I don't get why people love the faire soooo much! Its like they live for it. No where else is wearing a flower wreath on your head okay, so no, I don't want to buy a $20 flower wreath. I DONT believe in mystical faires, or jesters. I don't want to buy $300 swords or medieval fighting garb. WHat do people do with this crap?
And no, using "thee" and "thy" doen't do it for me. I am not fair, nor a maiden. (but maybe sometimes a wench :)
And then theres the cleveage, EVERYWHERE!! Not okay anywhere else, but at the fair, bring 'em on out, its for the sake of authenticity!
These are the same people that live in cyber-worlds and love Doom, and Dungeons and Dragons.
Am I right or wrong?

A day in the week..

One might think that sitting in the La-Z-Boy and doing homework would be SWEET(yes, we truly have a la-z-boy, I gave up the Pottery Barn dream years ago), but its not! My special little spot in the house has turned into my 9 to 5, and I am desperately fighting weight gain through Ritz cracker and string cheese consumption ( you know how that works, overeating the 'healthy' snacks mindlessly).

I am trying really hard to re-evaluate what is acceptable, since school really needs to be a priority. Its hard to walk through a messy room to go read (a lot of reading, man!) or do homeowork. I am combating total disaster though Costco surface wipes, keeping the laundry fairy up to date, and at least keeping the kitchen 'decent'.
Decent has got to be good enough, right now.

The van needs some attention, its the go-to spot for scriptures and church stuff. (but how can you have meaningful scripture study if they are in the car, huh, huh???) Drew commented that it smelled like burp the other day, awesome!

I can say that it has helped that the kids are helping a little more, and are a dream when it comes to school...although, their homework definitely adds to my afternoon workload. It doesn't help that they don't believe me when I give them answers...

My visiting teacher and friend, Gina H, made our family dinner, just to help out. That is an awesome gift to any busy mom, and the best kind of Valentine, so we shall have yummy enchiladas tonight. Charity is truly a blessing.

I am still making excersice a priority, whether its riding my bike for 45 min or even just a 25 min run, if thats all the time I have, its gotta be good enough. Andrea W treated me to a couple excercise videos at her house, so hard! But good to have a friend huffing and puffing with me.

I changed Shayne's desktop picture to this....

Subtle, I know.

Kellie-defined

The other day, I was watching a show on TV that follows an overweight family as they work on getting healthier. The show is called One Big Happy Family, and it is funny, and thought provoking. The 16 year old daughter said this "I have perfected the big girl, being anything other than that is scary".
Whoa. Did she read my mind? I have perfected my "big girl" every since I was 12ish.
-When I was young and a size 7, and my buddies and even my mom was a size 3-5, I felt huge.
-When you are the base as a cheerleader, it puts you in the "not as good as" category.
-As a big girl, you always are cracking jokes, because you need to make fun of yourself, before someone else gets to it.
-When you are big, you assume a lesser role by not being the threatening, cute friend.
-I was yelled at in the parking lot at Fry's once by a car of teenage boys, "Fat @*$%$#@", and at first I was mad, and then embarassed.
I realize that I am the one who has defined myself this way, I am sure that we all do this to ourselves. I'm not throwing myself a pity party, but the comment the girl made is a common "big girl" thought. I know that success will come when I can stop being afraid of being something a little different. I know that I need to change how I define "me".

Marinated Italian Potatoes

This is yet another go-to Farrell recipe...cheap and easy (who you callin' cheap and easy?) and way yummy. And most things you probably already have in your kitchen, can I get a woo-woot?
Marinated Italian Potatoes
5 lb golden potatoes(the ones with the thinner skin, what are those called?)
1/2c fresh parsley
1/2c green onion, sliced
3 cloves garlic
1 t salt
1/2 t dry mustard
1 t sugar
1 T worcestire sauce
1 c oil (olive if you are feeling fancy, vegetable works for us regular gals)
1/2 c vinegar (I like cider, but any ole' vinegar works)
Scrub, quarter and boil potatoes until tender, but don't overcook. Whirl the dressing ingredients MINUS the chopped parsley and green onion. Put the warm, drained taters in a large bowl, cover with dressing and top with green lovliness. Leave on the counter, and when you come into the kitchen, give it a stir. You can taste it now and again, and then wonder how come half is gone when dinner comes around... Tastes great at room temp, after it has sit for a couple hours...

This is a Paula Deen original, and my kids love it, great for picnics, okay....just make 'em already!

Drew!

I think that Heavenly Father thought he had let us off to easy with Jordan and Kennedy, and so he sent Drew! He is such a little stink sometimes, and still, my little baby!

Today, we were watching a commercial, and there was a dwarf, or, little person. (I have been told that 'dwarf' is not socially acceptable) Anywayyysss... Drew likes this particular commerical because...

Drew-"I like the dorks in the commercial"

me-"the what?"

Drew-(now unsure)-"the dorkins? the dorphins?"
