San Diego!

Two weeks ago we decided to take advantage of the time we have in California. We don't get out and do a lot together because of Dr. Mooy, but he had some time off this month so we headed out to San Diego. Graham is officially done with his first year of residency so we decided to celebrate! We stayed at a nice hotel, ate at the fanciest restaurants around. (this included a 5 course meal) Yeah we ate like kings. We spent one full day at the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park. There were so many beautiful things to see. We also spent a day at Torey Pines beach gathering ocean stones and walking in the waves.

By far the best thing about this trip was the baby giraffe at the zoo. She was just a week old and looked so mini and cute. Am I obsessed? A little. Apparently when mommy giraffes give birth the baby falls 6 feet to the ground, landing on their head and breaking the umbilical chord. Amazing. Oh yeah I got to pet a goat, I admit I was kind of terrified. Not only of the goats that apparently eat everything, but also because the chances of me getting urinated on at least doubled that day. We ended the trip in Irvine, eating at one of my favorite restaurants and going to see the movie Moonrise Kingdom. I adored every moment of the film. Yeah, this vacation was basically perfect.

Linguine love

It is official. We finally made homemade pasta. This has been a long time goal of Graham and I, especially after we received a pasta maker from Forrest and Shell a few years back. But in the closet it sat, lonely. Every once and a while I would take it out, dink around with it and imagine the possibilities. I figured that since I couldn't even figure out how to secure it to the counter, I probably shouldn't attempt making pasta. Ever.

Then one day out of the blue, Graham started making dough on the counter and pulled out the pasta maker. Don't worry I was there for moral support mostly. Graham let me turn the lever, it was fun. I was also in charge of hanging the pasta to dry. Yes, that is a hanger drying our pasta, we are classy like that. Can I tell you how satisfying this was, I mean to make our own pasta?? We made whole wheat pasta, well technically it was half wheat half white because if you make it 100% whole wheat you will have made cardboard in the shape of pasta. Anyways it was really fun and surprisingly easy! The end result was the best pasta I have ever had. ever. I had no idea what we have been missing out on. Now I am a firm believer that no one should ever have to buy pasta from the store. Go ahead, make your own. I promise you won't regret it.
