Request: 4k capabilities for RPi4
I had my Raspberry Pi 3B+ running at 1080p for some confort play in the coach running really well, but still having to go back to the PC for some 4k playing while also having a 4k setup in the living room. Never got too bothered by this limitation but now with new Raspberry Pi 4 that is up to 4k60p with H265 decode plus Gigabit Ethernet, I think is only natural to make this question/request. Probably some changes would be needed, but I think it would be great to have this available.

Many thanks in advance from many coach PC players!

The build does not support over 1080p. If it did, we could already do it on the Pi3 with 4k TV's. However we can't.

To other devices like phones it supports 4k, but not to the Pi itself.
Bumping

Happy to find this post as I was looking for the same. The Steam Link hardware works great for mouse/keyboard at 1080p 60fps but 4k would be even better with the Pi 4!
Agreed. I see this as my ultimate way to eliminate my HTPC and simplify my setup. Hopefully they can add it! :steamhappy:
I got Raspberry Pi 4 assuming it will have no issues with Steam Link in resolutions higher than 1080/60, as this is easily achievable on mobile.
How come 4k support hasn't been added yet? When can we expect it?
Because the Pi can't handle it
Streaming games on a Pi is like streaming video isnt it? Its a video signal transcoded and encoded in addition to syncing your inputs to the game?
So it should be possible for the Pi 4 to stream 4K games, as it was made to encode 4K material? And with the large amount of memory you can have on these..
Yeah i would love to have the option to go up to 1440p, i bought raspberry pi 4 specifically for this and now i see it's not supported :(
The HEVC Video (H265) option is unavailable on my pi 4 too.
Don't have 4k display but enabling HEVC in advanced settings worked for me with Pi4 with one exception - there was no mouse cursor. I could see desktop streamed just fine and when moving mouse I see mouseover effects on icons but don't see mouse cursor itself. switching back to H264 fixes the cursor. So it almost works, HEVC was shown in network stats overlay as being used.

Also the mouse cursor could be also driver bug on remote end so maybe it can work when streamed from different computer.

To fix the cursor issue with HEVC if you have an NVIDIA card, on the host PC go to steam settings -> remote play -> Advanced host options and tick use NVFBC. It fixed the issue for me
Wow, thank you but sadly it didn't help. Checked it and rebooted and no difference. This is Nvidia Tesla M60 (Azure cloud NV6 instance). Would the NVFBC be visible somewhere? The overlay streaming info says soemething like
Desktop DWM NV12 + NVENC HEVC and whn running steam or game changes into "Game polled d3d ..." or "Steam D3D10 NV12 ..." should I see NVFBC somewhere?

Mouse works in steam big picture mode (as it is software rendered?) but once it switches to hardware cursor when going to desktop or running e.g. Portal 2 it stops moving and stays in upper left column. So in fact it is not gone but just stays there and does not move. It even changes into diiferent shapes when e.g. blindly moving over web links in opened steam client window but stays in the corner, with H264 it works.

The mouse cursor was a bug in the client, and is fixed in the current beta build:

Thank you, tested beta and mouse with HEVC works now :-)
Great to hear that the HEVC/mouse issue is now fixed in the latest beta!

Is anyone with a Pi4 able to confirm that 4K / UHD output via HDMI 2.0 is now working? If yes, which Display Latency do you get with the Pi4 hardware in 4K @ 60 FPS? Are there any frame drops?

I'll let you know sometime on the 21st when the Pi 4 arrives.

I'm hearing some issues with hardware encoding but I have a 3900X, and in my testing on the Pi 3 B+, turning off hardware decoding and just throwing 8 threads at the problem significantly reduced latency.
