Misery loves company

So, lately I've been finding quite a bit of comfort in others' trials/failures/disappointments. Does that make me a horrible person?

Let me clarify. It's not that I get excited about other people's misfortune. Not at all. But I do find it reassuring to know that I'm not the only person to have doubts and trials and screw ups. I put on a pretty good show and try to hide my flaws - who doesn't? - but really, a lot of it is smoke and mirrors.

So how should I deal with my flaws and insecurities? Should I continue to hide them? Should I put them all out there and let others know how imperfect I am? I'm still trying to figure this one out...

Montreal and UNCW

Happy New Year, kids.

I've had a few people ask how the Montreal trip went, so I'll catch you all up. Unfortunately, I was horribly sick (the full-blown flu, head cold, and no voice the whole time) and primarily holed up in my hotel room. I did sneak out long enough to go to my interviews, meals, and receptions. It was great to network with new peeps and reunite with colleagues I've met at conferences past. A special shout-out goes to those who attended the Arizona reception; we had tons of fun and they even let me kick my heels off.

Luckily, I stumbled my way through the interviews in my Nyquil-daze well enough to secure some on-site interviews. I'm hoping this won't jinx me, but I'll definitely say that University of North Carolina Wilmington was my favorite school. The interview went well enough with Dr. Canel and Dr. Schell that I was invited to interview on campus last week. I knew from my research and my earlier interview that UNCW was a great university with the research/teaching load and MIS course offerings that I was looking for; my remaining questions dealt with Wilmington and the department faculty.

After visiting campus this week and meeting with the department faculty, the college dean, and some family members, I'm hoping they're as impressed with me as I was with all of them. They are genuine, kind and fun, and I would look forward to working and collaborating with them. I admire the direction the department is headed and was impressed with the care and effort the dean puts into making every department in the college of business succeed. The students are respectful and smart and have a real admiration for their professors. And even though it was rainy and cold throughout most of my visit, Wilmington is a charming town with a lot of character and wonderful people.

While none of them know of my blog and will likely never see this, I would like to thank the department for inviting me to campus and showing me such a good time - even through all the stress of interviewing. Even if they choose to offer the position to one of the other three candidates, I think I made some new friends and look forward to collaborating with them in the future. Honestly, though, I'm hoping to get the position and move there with Xavier. So all of you please cross fingers, say prayers, sacrifice goats, and do whatever it is that works for you. I should hear back from them by/on February 8, so I'll keep you all posted. (In the meantime, best of luck to them. They are interviewing 6 others - 3 for my position and 3 for another position in the department - in the next two weeks. Ouch.)

Happy New Year!

May your 2008 suck less than 2007 did.

Love,

X.
