Ode to Pinterest

Oh pinterest, I love you so. Not just so. So so so. So much. I hope you get what I’m trying to convey. That I want to have babies with it. Babies that come out knowing five hundred and ninety four ways to arrange the mantle for Halloween and a thousand good curry recipes. Plus they got a tip on how to make your dishwasher run better. Don’t get me started on all the sassy quotes.  I love you sassy, clever pinterest baby.

Here are my favorite pinterest finds today. Share a link if you got one better.

Healthy cookie dough dip? Dip that really uses chickpeas but tricks people into thinking they need fat pants to go on? This girl is a genius. GENIUS.

This makes me think I can comb my hair. Just to fill you in, I can’t. I’m going to try anyway and I’m full of pretty hair hope.

Jared won’t let me put my decorations up without him. I feel this rule only includes pre existing décor. Anything I make in the next couple days is not subject to the “Jared wants Mel to lose precious days of Halloween Happiness” rule. Ha. Shoulda thought it through buddy.

Do you think if I do this today and tomorrow I’ll be bikini ready on Friday? Cause I kind of need to be. I forgot and ate a dozen cookies. A few times. Pray for me.

Never too early to get thinking about some fun homemade gifts for Christmas. Turn those thoughts to action people. Seriously, if I don’t start now, we’ll be reliving the year Jared bought a magazine at the gas station and tried to fake Martha Stewart’s signature on the front. Merry Christmas.

Got anything good for me?

Yesterday I saw a baby. Being born.

That's right. And I took pictures of it too. My sister in law had her perfect little boy in the four o'clock hour of yesterday morning. It was a long night but I'm so lucky they included me. Naturally, I have lots to say on the subject. Just as naturally, I haven't written it yet. Just in case you were wondering, I am not going to give you a rundown of her labor. Not my story to share.

Here is a picture of beautiful little Desi. One I don't think my sister in law will mind me putting up.

Are you in love?

Three things you shouldn't do this fall.

Fall is officially here. Whoot. This is a bigger relief to me than you because your husband hasn't been knocking your autumn decor for the last 22 days.

"Not fall Mel. Nice try Mel. Your pumpkins can suck it Mel." All right, maybe his mouth didn't say that last one, but if you saw his eyes...

Anyway, we've all been inundated with everyone's odes to this fabulous season since September rolled around.

We've heard about how they can't wait to swallow whole pumpkins with spice sticks shoved in them. We get that they want to watch every single football game, even if it means losing their job, losing their spouse, losing their grasp of reality. We know they want to frolic in golden fall rays while wearing Frye boots and twirling in traditional autumn fairy fashion.

Me too.

But this is my list of do nots. Believe me, I have your safety in mind.

Number one. Don't jump in the leaves. I know it's tempting. There you are walking through the park or your yard and you see it, a giant pile of glistening fall gold. Let me tell you what it really is. A nest of terrorists. I mean spiders. A nest of disgusting eight legged insects just waiting for some fall sap to jump into their trap so they can crawl up into your hair and lay little fall babies. Yuck. Pass.

Number two- Pumpkin Spice Frappucino. If you're going to get one, you're probably going to get a grande. And if you're human, you're probably going to to get whipped cream. This means you're going to get 69 grams of sugar. Don't do it. It's all about moderation people. Do you want a stupid drink that will fill you up for three hours until you need your next fix? Wouldn't you rather buy one of those giant Halloween bags of mixed candy and snack on mini snickers and musketeers all day long? If your answer is “No, give me the drink” you suck. I don't share straws but I will totally steal some of your individually wrapped candy. Think of me.

Number three- Don't put a scarecrow in your yard. Those things freak me out. Can't we just live without them?

Ok, go forth and ignore me fall lovers. Enjoy it. Enjoy your weekend. Enjoy your fatty drinks and freaky decorations. Enjoy your bug infested heads. But don't say I didn't warn you.

Age. We got it down over here.

I do not remember being one. You can argue that it's good thing. Memories of pooping in public and giant humans talking in high pitched voices while breaking into my personal space...shudder. Plus the meals were nothing to write home about. There are only so many angles you can take on Annie's mac and cheese + veggies. Then again, I rocked some outfits that could rival the best fashion bloggers. I busted out my chambray shirt back then. With jellies. And I had original rayban knockoffs. Fly.

But I'm on the even better end of one this time around. It is so much fun to watch. The best yet. Maybe the best ever. I have a lot to go through before I can make that bold statement.

Now that I think about it, I'm also at one of my favorite ages. I guess that makes this life a lot of fun for me right now.

What has been your favorite age so far? For yourself, I mean.

I, Me, Mel crafted.

You're probably like, "Woman, you have blog, you have a kid, you seem to be God fearing. Duh. Of course you did. Isn't that what you people do?"

This people don't. I have serious attention issues when it comes to crafting. Just to put this into perspective, I was so proud I half completed a little painting I displayed it in my kitchen for three years. One, two, three years of pride over something I only spent an hour on tops that still had unfilled pencil tracings on it. It was a record.  Currently two thirds of my dining room chairs are recovered. It's been that way since Easter. My basement stairs have had painters tape on them for a year and half. Not painted. Not happening.

So when I saw this tutorial, I told myself I would do it. All the way baby. (Don't stress, not trying to bring back bad 80's slang. That was me talking to my child. I know he reads this.)

Phin ended up with glue in his hair, I sprayed myself in the face with orange paint, and Jared is all sorts of bummed over the book I chose.

Please Jared. Like you ever planned on reading about the Cartesian Revolution. Or maybe you did. In which case, my bad.

But really, my good.

Plus I made my favorite chowder today. And cleaned, so bam. Just as domestic as you think I should be.

Six months vs. 18 months. Phin edition.

6 months- I wait with bated breath to hear my child call me Mama.
18 months- I wait with bated breath to see if I’m successfully able to sneak through a whole pee sesh without him banging on the door screaming MAMA!

6- Read to a baby who’s more interested in chewing pages. Book = my choice.
18- Read to a baby who’s singular goal is making sure I never, ever, EVER forget a single word in the fireman book. I’ll probably be muttering it on my death bed when I’m all incoherent and crap.

6- I write every little milestone down in the baby book.
18- I find the baby book in the toilet. Awesome.

6 – I can’t wait to see him roll over, crawl, pull himself up.
18- I finally get why people use those leash things.

6-If all else fails, give babe boob.
18-If all else fails, put babe on kitchen counter. What’s up with that?

6-Older cousins own you kid. Don’t even think about playing with something for more than five seconds.
18- You sit on older cousins. You remind them you have tall parents. They don’t.

6- You eat every new little fruit or veggie we puree for you. We applaud ourselves for raising a kid who eats healthy.
18- Sweet potatoes with Nutella? We do what it takes. Annie’s Mac & Cheese and Rocky All Natural Chicken Tenders are my best friend. Sometimes you’re on a total hunger strike. Just don’t chain yourself to a tree kid.

6- I’m sure that my baby is the most beautiful/cute/perfect human that has every graced the planet with his presence.
18- No change here people. No change at all.

Eighteen and I’m even more in love. Believe it.

Today's post is brought to you by Mel's neurotic tendencies

(If this is your print, tell me! I saved it and can't find the original source.)

The internal dialogue in my head is going at all times. Is that normal? Even as I'm typing this I can hear myself reading along, like my own little movie narrative. In fact, I'm always surprised when I hear myself on a recording because my head voice sounds so much better. Like a cross between Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston. All American head voice.

When I'm alone at night, my personal dialogue is completely taken over by my Dateline/48 Hours broadcaster voice. I'm always convinced that I'm in some sort of imminent danger and nights alone that danger is a break in turned murder. As I'm wandering around after Phin goes down, everything I do is part of the show.

Example: I'm doing dishes. Brain wanders. Cut to detective being interviewed. In my head.

“When we initially entered the house, there really wasn't anything striking. It was neat, dishes done. A little cluttered, but nothing you wouldn't expect from a house with a child and two full time working parents.”

Because if I'm going to imagine a detective, he's going to let me off the hook for a messy house.

Or yesterday it was,
“Upon entering the residence we were unable to move due to a large amount of cardboard boxes.”

Cut to host voice while showing picture of boxes from police file.

“Melanie's husband ran a business from his home. When he left town with orders half filled in the living room, he never imagined the role those boxes would play.”

Don't ask me what role they played. I didn't get far enough to work it out. I was distracted by the new Will Arnett show. Sorry to leave you suspended.

Actually impending doom is often the subject of a Mel daydream/day terror. Yeah, I'm switching it to day dream because that sound considerably less crazy. While I was still pumping in a closet at work I would try to imagine what I would do if a crazy student came into the lobby, shooting the place up. I worked out a whole plan on how to warn the rest of the building. And how humble I'd be when they interviewed me. So classy of me.

I'm incredibly lucky because despite this being just the tip of iceberg when it comes to the weirdness of Mel, Jared totally digs me. Actually, more because of it. Phew. Cause we would be sca-rewed if a little crazy freaked him out.

My internal self is totally telling me to hit the sack. I've been up twenty hours and am 50% convinced this post is going to make zero sense when I re read it in 6 hours. My bad. Happy Friday Eve!

Name your vice

What, corn syrup and red lake 40 not your thing? It's been a long week.

Fess up, what's your go to guilty pleasure?

The problems with today

It’s true, negative posts can be such a downer. But like I always say, a good friend will come to the hospital after your skateboarding accident, throw back the hospital curtain and go into hysterics before even saying hello. Then tell you that you look like Quasimodo. Just so you, I was the hunchback.

Today-

-I woke up remembering how Tom Brady and the Patriots ruined my chances of winning my fantasy football matchup. By ONE POINT! Don’t judge.

-My babe was so clingy, I couldn’t pee without holding him. Then he decided to seal the deal by letting his intestines explode. Yes.

-My hair decided to channel Edward Scissor Hands. That’s not the way I envisioned getting close to Johnny Depp.

-In keeping with the I’m feeling super hot theme, it’s one of those days that have people guessing, “Is she?” She isn’t. Tumor people. Tumor.

-My living room looks like this. Baby paradise. Mama nightmare.

-Jared didn’t leave me a single enchilada for lunch. Whaaaa…??? I thought he loved me. I thought we a had history. The kind where he was aware with my deep obsession with food. He should send me one of those cookie bouquets to make up for it.

I am stoked Whole Foods showed up on Living Social. And the weather is taking a nose dive, which is A OK with this senorita. So look, I can be positive.

Balloooooooooooooon.

I like to hoard things. Not TLC quality crap like used paper plates and old doll heads, more like sick days at work. Pre Phin I had a million days off saved up. If I could've swam in them a la Scrooge McDuck, I so would have. Thing is, post Phin is a new world. A world where I use them faster than I earn them. No more giant silo of vacation days to swan dive into. Now I'm like the dude shaking a nickle in one of those giant margarita glasses from a casino. Complete with inexplicable stain on shirt.

This is my way of saying that I've been saving up my "I don't have anything to say so I'm just going to post pictures" days for a couple weeks now. So that's all I got. Balloon Races.

It's Friday so I'm talking about cartwheels.

Friday! Friday! Friday!

My first job was working in a Target like store. I used to get stuck in the electronics department on week nights and no one ever, EVER, came in. So I would do work appropriate things to entertain myself, like practice my awesome gymnastic skills down the aisles. Don’t judge, I won awards at that place. Legit ones. Best customer service and Limbo Queen. This info is going somewhere, I swear.

There was a smokin college boy that worked the security cameras at the aforementioned store. The place was full of high school girls just waiting to pounce on him. Humans, I was team captain of the “I want to make out with J” squad. So I asked him out and turns out guy had been crushin on me since he saw me turn cartwheels next to fancy DVD players. 12 years ago people. Netflix was not really a thing yet. So we totally fell in lust for a month or so until he made out with another chick and I ditched him at a show to go hang out with another, even hotter dude.

What I’m getting at is Friday makes me want to do cartwheels down the hall. Sure, there isn’t any hot security guards checking me out and I might take out a vice provost because I’m just not as coordinated as I used to be, but it’s Friday. The high a sprinkled donut used to give me isn’t working anymore. Now it has to be three donuts. I need to add in some cardio. Tell me I’m not alone. Even if you have to lie.

Enjoy your football this weekend, if you're into that sort of thing. Maybe do it Phin style with chili all over your face.
Happy Friday!

I let my husband on here. Is that against the rules?

Hi all. Today, a special treat. A blog all about how awesome I am. Really, I'm tired, so I asked Jared to write a marriage advice post for my blog. What I got was a document titled Mel Rocks. Shucks, I'll take it. Clearly he wrote it before I unleashed my demonic "HOW COULD YOU EAT MY YOGURT AND MY QUESADILLA?!! HOWWW???" voice. Cause that didn't go over well. So here, an in love Lesco.

Jared here. Here's my best "off the top of my head" list of things I learned over the last eight years with Mel.

The thing about Mel is she is always right...at least 90% of the time.  When we were first married, I had a decent sense of confidence.  My memory was an ally.  I did, however, have a sense that Alzheimer's or some other dimentia was creeping up on me.  Travel a bit down the road that is our marriage and you find me up against the ropes like Rocky Balboa fighting that Russian guy. (Mel here- Did you think my guy could write a post without a Rocky or Godfather reference? Not I.)  Every time I tried to rely on my memory to back up what I was saying she would laugh off my silly argument and remind me how it really happened and then go on to thoroughly explain what I had actually said, what we were both wearing, the date and time, and what we ate for dinner that night.  It was like being Rocky without the last minute come back AND looking over to the big Russian Guy's corner and seeing both the gnarled little coach and Adrianne rooting against me!  These days I actually use her strange ability as a kind of carnival attraction...'Hey Mel, when did so and so move in?'  'Oh, it was a Monday and the temperature was around 91 degrees.  She had on that ridiculous green shirt with the turkey and a beer can. Yup, definitely the 12th of March.' (Me again. Don't worry, I would never let anyone get away with wearing a turkey bird shirt. I'd do you a solid and lend you a top. One that didn't mix foul and alcohol.)    Capitulating to such a vast ocean of random detailed information has actually reduced the number of fights we have.

Mel blogged about this next one once.  We were dating about two months when she was asked to go to Napa where her sister was living.  She didn't want to go alone, so I offered to tag along.  I wondered how awkward it was going to be, not knowing each other very well, we might have a lot of uneasy silence.  After three straight hours of blabbering about who knows what I noticed that we were at our destination.  It has been that way every single day since then....we never, I mean NEVER, get tired or bored of each other.  Some couples have money, some have foreign adventures and some have perfect teeth,  but we've got a permanent desire to be around each other. (Wait, what are you saying about my teeth Lesco?)

Even if I find out that Mel is actually a leader of a sleeping local terror cell just waiting for the right moment to strike, she does like to get up every once in a while around 5 am and go to 'the gym', I'd still have to say thank you for the little Phinny Phin.  I have done monumentally difficult things in my life. Far and away, Phin is the hardest.  The absolute sleep deprivation for 15 month; I can't do it again.  But that little Phin - I just cannot imagine a sweeter joy than that little man, my little buddy.  Thanks for making him Mel! (Welcome. I do what I can.)

And that reminds me of a fourth thing that I have learned over the last eight years.  We were living in our little duplex, still getting used to each other.  One day I was looking for something in Merlin, our bureau designed and made by Mel's great grandfather Merlin, and I noticed a bunch of crunched up papers in the back upper corner.  'How odd!  What could they be?' I innocently wondered...."Well, oh my!" This was said in my sarcastically calm voice. It happened to be about two month's worth of bills that have yet to be paid (Ya'all should know this one offends me. Still not sure how that happened with these stupid things but I was the bill payer in our family. I worked for a bank people. Sheesh.) For quite some time I was secretly worried that all things in our financial realm would be a struggle between me trying to organize and pay them and her blissfully ignoring her hands while they did a little dirty work in the dark crevices of Merlin.  Although my fears were allayed early on, it was not until I saw Mel keep her full time job, drive two hours each day for day care, keep the house in a livable condition and love our little Phin all while DEALING WITH HIS DEMONIC SLEEP SCHEDULE (did you notice the eponymous name of this blog!!!???) that I realized just how strong, determined and capable Mel is.  For reference, let me give you an average Phin night,  around 1 year.

7:30 - Dinner. He's very picky, but most kids probably are.
8:00 - Bath time. Generally he likes it but some months were pure screaming.
8:30 - Bed time. Just hope he falls asleep while rocking him in your arms or it is half an hour of screaming before he falls asleep.
10:30 - Wakes up the first time.
11:30 - Finally goes back down after whatever sleep inducing cure de jour we concoct.
1:00 - Second time up, he is never happy at night so it is always screaming when he is awake.
2:30 - Hurry back to bed after getting him down for the last time. We know that he is not staying asleep for very long and this is our last chance to get any rest.
3:30 - Wakes up screaming and is ready for the day. No getting this demon back to sleep.

Yup, that makes her a saint!  But here is the real kicker, we had two official babysitters in the first 12 months that totalled maybe three hours.  Just kidding.  While that's true, the real kicker is that I was out of town for 8 day stretches every two weeks!  So add to that schedule that she leaves the house at 6 am, at work at 7, rush to vovo's by 4:30pm and home at 6.  This is where she gets her little break, see, because from 6 to 7:30 all she has to do is clean the house, get dinner ready, play with Phin, because she has not seen the little monster all day, and rest up for the coming nights epic sleep battle.  (I can't stop butting in. I have to tell you all we have seen the error of our ways and have amazing family that has watched Phin so much the last six months that it has totally made up for any lack of babysitting we took advantage of his first year. Thanks fam!)

I WILL SWEAR ON MY LIVING MOTHER THAT MEL HAS AVERAGED FOUR HOURS OF SLEEP FOR TWO YEARS!  This is not four hours in a row either.  If she can handle that kind of crap, I have got the most amazing woman out there!!!  Thanks Mel Man.  I love you for your sacrifices.

Love is mutual Lesco. Thanks for taking the reigns on the blog for a day! Now you all know we both have no idea how you're supposed to use commas. Happy Friday Eve all.

We ate French food but not like French people

We are not fancy restaurant people. We are most definitely good food people, but we'll take it anyway it's served. Lesco busted out the fancy restaurant card for the anniversary. I'm positive it was for two reasons.

Number one, he said he never want to to drive by this place again and hear me say, “I really want to eat there someday.” Giant sigh. Wistful look to the west because that's the direction you turn when you're in dire need of some good , dramatic natural light for your face.

Number two, I think he felt a wee bit guilty. He shouldn't have. For some reason we both became overwhelmed with the idea of another thing to have to get all creative for.

“Oh look honey, you decorated the entire house in strung up pictures of our marriage. Look at all the twinkly lights! Listen to the soundtrack of our marriage you made. Is that an exact replica of our wedding cake??” Dudes, I got as far as buying the string and some gold spray paint to make things shiny.

Instead we kind of pinky swore we would not do anything for each other. Then I broke the rules and was a tiny bit sad when he didn't even have a card. Damn those female genetics of mine that laugh in the face of the mighty pinky and it's higher law.

He made reservations and babysitting arrangements with my awesome sister in law. So awesome that she actually asked if she could babysit for us. Multiple times. You should know that a baby is due to fall out of her any time now. Maybe as I'm typing this. I did make her dance to Ice Ice Baby the other day. According to youtube videos, that's pretty much a guaranteed labor inducer.

I learned quite a bit about the French.

They are all about washing silverware. They must get the high I get when I bust out of can of rainbow chip. Every ten minutes they were bringing over a tray with fresh silverware. We live in a desert people!

French people are slow eaters. I think they were forcing us to have conversation by making us wait 35 minutes between courses. I tried to tell them that we've been married 8 years and all we really wanted was to get in and out of that restaurant so we can come back to our house, put something away and stare at it for ten minutes while it stays in it's place. Like magic. Magic that used to happen all the time before a monster moved in. Les sigh.

French people like their wine. Menu, one page. Wine list, seven pages. I've seen long wine lists before, just not ones that rivaled the unabridged version of Les Miserables in girth.

The French keep things delish. Oh my frick, I might pass out just remembering the way that brioche melted in my mouth. And after my lips regained movement from the temporary shock the glorious onion soup put them in, they belted out the French anthem in praise. Totally involuntary and a little conspicuous in such a quiet restaurant. We'll go back for more soup and chocolate mousse.

Eight years ago

Eight years ago, we made out in front of a bunch of people. Under a tree.

Here's the tree.

Here's the making out.

Here we are feeling all smug about it.

And we'd do it again. But probably with a better photographer.

An extraordinary life

Do you have a favorite place you've ever lived? I do. I instantly become nostalgic every time I think about it. It was the very first place Jared and I lived after we were married.

Leading up to the wedding we became increasingly frantic about finding the perfect home to rent. We are total house whores and had spent many evenings driving around our favorite neighborhoods, day dreaming about raising a family in a giant old house with fireplaces and mature trees. And secret passages to spy on people. Duh.

We toured some real winners. There was the shack next to a frat house. The place with a washer in the front yard. My personal favorite was walking into the bathroom of an apartment we were both totally feeling and finding a guy sitting on the toilet. Pooping. It was awkward and pretty much ruined it for us.

The apartment I was currently living in was out due to the naked guy beneath me who thought getting drunk and yelling at me up the vent was the best way to pass time on a week night. Who am I kidding, dude loved it on the weekends too.

I couldn't move in with Jared. Sharing a bathroom with six dudes and the soap scum they so meticulously cultivated over the last year kind of made me throw up. It still does. We lucked out though.

We almost didn't see the for rent sign. It was half stuck in a bush. We weren't even sure it was supposed to be there, but it was love at first sight. I can't even say that about when I met Jared. First sight of Jared I thought, “Hmm, red hair.” First sight of house I thought, “I could have babies there!”

It was the perfect. A little white brick house with a red shingle roof. It had corner windows. It looked old! The street was tree lined. This was back before either of us had cell phones so we rushed back to my apartment to call the number on the sign. We left a message and we waited, tortured by the thought of someone else living in our house. I think we drove by it ten times before we heard from anyone.

Then Art called with a tiny, crackly voice. We didn't know it at the time, but he was just out of the hospital. Jared spoke to him.

“Are you married? I don't rent to couples that aren't married.”
“We're actually getting married next month. We're looking for our first place.”
“Well I can't rent it to you if you aren't married.”
“But we're getting married...in a month.”
“Sorry, if you're not married, I don't want to rent it to you.”
“We're not even planning on moving in until after the wedding.”
“But you're not married?”
“No, not until next month.”
“I'm sorry, I don't rent it to non married couples. They aren't stable.”
“But we're getting...We are married! We just got married.”
“You are married?”
“Yeah, we are. Married.”
“Great, do you want to see the place?”
“We'll take it! Yes we do, but we'll take it!”

Swear. That's exactly how it happened and the first time we met out future landlord, Art.

We were cautious at first. He told us there would be no lease, just month to month. That way if he found out we were crazy bikers he could kick us out. He was joking, kind of.

Art lived in the house next door with his little wife Ola. It took us about ten seconds to fall in love. Art and Ola met while working at the high class joint The Riverside after World War II when Reno was still a kickin town.

He told us about her hair salon where she styled the likes of everyone from Eleanor Roosevelt to Marilyn Monroe. He told us about how Cary Grant would ride his Cadillac up and down the street annoying the hell out of Renoites. Apparently people couldn't stand him. I knew it.

He shared stories about flying over The Hump during World War II. About the narcotics that were given to them after the war. About the rehab he and all his fellow vets had to go to. About how horrible it was and how nobody wanted to talk about it.

He told us about growing up back east and running through a shoe factory. We heard about sneaking on the train to Boston where prostitutes would yell prices out of open windows on the street. We heard about when he lost his mother.

These stories, his life, were impressive enough, but it was the way he treated us that made us fall for Art. I tell Jared all the time that I love Art. I can't help myself.

He never minded when our rent was a few days late. When we left the water in the front yard on all night long, he paid for it and just asked that we didn't do it again. Every month we found thirty dollars in the mailbox with the receipt for our rent. At first he told us it was for mowing the lawn. Then winter came and the money didn't stop. It never stopped. Sometimes it was a little more and sometimes a little less. We told him it wasn't necessary. We loved doing yard work and he already charged rent far below the city average. The little bit helped so much the years we were both working part time and I was still in school.

He wasn't just kind to us. He would hire people down on their luck to do little chores. He let a man sleep in his detached garage for a whole winter. We discovered that one in the middle of the night. Jared stepped on the poor guy. He loved his daughter, Marie, and in return she loved him.

Our dining rooms each had giant corner windows that faced each other. It was comforting on the many nights Jared was out of town to sit down at my table and wave at Art over the little ivy covered fence. How a man in his nineties who could barley walk could make me feel safe defies logic. It did though.

I knew it would happen. He's been in and out of hospitals and rehab facilities since we met eight years ago. Art passed away. It's a different kind of mourning when the person who leaves has lived such a full life. He was nearly a hundred. Ola has been gone for many years now. He has been a prisoner of his failing body for so long. Still, I'm heartbroken for Marie. I'm mad at myself for not visiting more when the house we purchased exactly four years after we moved in was just down the street. I will miss him but I know I'll see him again someday. In the mean time, I'll try to channel a little Art. Be kind to strangers. Give more than you take. And don't rent to crazy bikers.

A new low at work

Was there a guy in your high school that all the girls swooned over? Yeah, ours too. You can call me a total liar, but the guy featured in today's entry was never my type. I always went for the brooding, pierced guys that were too old to go to prom with me. Ohhhh, dangerous. "I love your five lip rings, want my number?" Yeah, try making out with that.

Dude was cute, but had too much sun and not enough body art for me.

Fast forward ten years. You should know it was downright painful for me to write that. Fast forward one whole decade.

It's lunch. I'm home. My laptop is open. This is the part where I see one of my friends from facebook is now following me on Pinterest, so I check out her boards. There he is, high school dude. My new follower is also following him. So I click on the guy and "Whoa, look at those sleek map pillows. Those would be awesome in Phin's room. Crap. Did I just click follow?"

Unfollow, unfollow! Do they automatically send an email? Will that have my name? Why didn't I take Jared's last name? Maybe dude won't remember who I am and think I'm just some random Pinterest human.

Then I took a breath. Sure no one likes to be caught internet stalking. It's like pooping right? We all do it but prefer no one catch us. I console myself with the fact that I haven't seen the guy in at least 5+ years and it will probably be another five until I run into him. Hopefully by then we'll both be fat and won't recognize each other.

Fast forward thirty minutes. Did that give you whiplash?

Half and hour later and I'm at my desk when I see a guy walk into the office across the hall. Not just a guy, it's the guy. I swear the universe thinks it's pretty freaking hilarious. Except, I'm not 100% convinced it's him. So I consult my co-worker. Lucky for us the office across the hall has plenty of windows to stare right through.

"R, I swear I was talking about that dude with my husband half an hour ago and I haven't seen him in at least five years." Talking about sounds so much better than stalking.
"Really?"
"I think.. I don't know. Let me pull him up on facebook. Do you think this is the same guy?" We look at the screen. We look at the guy. We look at the screen.

"I don't know, that guy on facebook looks like he's wearing makeup.." He does. Maybe it was an art thing.

At this point I'm eighty percent convinced it's the guy. I go to fill my water bottle so I can do a walk by and get a closer look. He's facing the wrong way. But I do see enough to notice he's rocking longer bangs than mine. Interesting.

We wait it out. He's turning towards the door, sure looks like him. He comes through. He smiles. He waves.

Ding! Ding! Ding! R give me a look. I give a half wave and do faux chit chat with a co worker to make it look like we weren't staring at him for the last eight minutes and comparing him to a bad facebook pic.

You should know a little bit about our office. We have two doors near my desk. One goes down the stairs, the other into a little lobby with the elevator.

He goes down the stairs.

"David you should totally have a double-decker cake.....R, did you see the wave?! It's him. I knew it! Knew it! Did you see his hair?!" I also said some other things. Things I'm too embarrassed to admit. Know it's humiliating.

And here's where R points to the lobby of the elevator and mouths, "He's still here!" What able bodied 28 your old guy doesn't take the stairs?

I did what any logical person would do. I collapsed under my desk. Laughing and crying and I'm not going to admit it out loud but maybe peeing a little bit. I'm just glad I didn't say what I almost said cause it could have been even worse. It would have been Meet the Fockers kind of cringe bad.

I don't know why it was so funny. Maybe I'm still a little sick. Maybe I'm just punch drunk and it's Friday afternoon. Either way, my boss didn't even blink an eye while I laid under my desk crying. Perhaps that's an indication of exactly what kind of employee I am. Maybe that's what should embarrass me...

Happy three day weekend all!

Oh and just for reference, here's the celeb I was drooling over in 2001. You?

One year ago.

My baby is a monster. Don't be all like, "Duh Mel, don't think I can read the title of this blog? Think I'm here just to look at all your blurry pictures?" One, you're not? Two, I'm talking size.

I rocked his sweet little baby body to sleep tonight and it hit me, "Dude, you're big." When did that happen? I'm pretty sure it was while my sleep deprived body drooled on itself while reading books about firetrucks and scooping dog food out of a little mouth.

Dang.

I can't handle this. Today he's stealing chicken fingers off my plate, tomorrow my car? Soooo not ready for eight.

Check it. Phinny one year ago.

Ahhhhh. He was such a cute little five month old. Probably the cutest ever. EVER.

Now he's way to cool for his car seat and can intentionally glare at the camera. Ha child. I still control your meals and the cleanliness of your derriere. Don't mess.
