It’s Tober Time…..

We have had some action packed activities these last few weeks and I thought I would share.

Cub Scout Day Camp

Spring 2011 011

Jax is officially getting to be so BIG! Where has the time gone? I took this picture on his last day. He had a blast at day camp we heard all about it for days. Thanks to so many wonderful volunteers who helped make this a memorable event for my son.

DRYER MADNESS

Spring 2011 020

I am super impressed by John’s skills. I had an off and on working dryer for a week. Finally, the thing pooped out on me. John came home to my make-shift laundry line in the kitchen and quickly sprung into action. $20 later and a YouTube video and my dryer is working great. Thanks Babe!!

FATHERS AND SONS=

MOTHER AND

DAUGHTER TIME

Eyrlin is by far the most creative with ideas of things to do. She had a list. One included taking pictures of everything she did so she could show her brothers.

Spring 2011 051

“Brothers I will miss you so much!!”

Spring 2011 053

“But I am going to love doing what I want!!”

Spring 2011 027

First thing on the agenda, we made a casserole for someone else and sent it off. (NOT on her agenda, but we had a last minute add on)

Spring 2011 022

Second we did a puzzle together……

Spring 2011 029

And drank out of a fancy glass which we broke. No biggy!

Spring 2011 028

Third, Eyrlin ate one of dads ice creams and she was so excited. Oh, and it was BEFORE dinner, double exciting.

Spring 2011 033

To top off the ice cream she swallowed a worm!!

Spring 2011 040

Then we danced!!!

Spring 2011 045

Played guitar.

Spring 2011 050

Sang at the top of our lungs.

Spring 2011 054

Ordered a pizza.

Spring 2011 055

Watched a movie.

Spring 2011 058

And put together one of the brothers Lego sets.

After all that fun time we went to bed and Eyrlin slept with me, which was so exciting. When we woke in the morning it was video games till the brothers got home.

We loved the time we spent together. Canon was home, but he missed is afternoon nap so I could put him down early for a night with Eyrlin. Canon didn’t mind a bit!

Eyrlin and I had lots of long talks about being a mom. I am pretty proud of her and all that she wants to do when she is a mom. That girl always has a smile on her face and a HUGE hug everyday for us.

We had a great time and I can’t wait until next year.

***********************

As you can see we were busy! This week, I am catching up on all the laundry, finishing up some activities so Jax can earn his Wolf, and trying out a 550 piece puzzle with Eyrlin.

Totally LOVE my family!!!

Stayin’ Sane

Mother,

Thank you for the visit, I wish it were longer.

You probably were thinking, “Why has my daughter not written? Have I done something wrong?” Answer: YES!! You went back to Arizona without me…..Ok, forgiven, now I can move on and write.

Some might read the title and say, “I knew she was losing it.” Some might say, “What?!?! Kathy Tober, the shock!!” Others might just simply laugh and say, “That silly girl!”

I think I am on the verge of losing my sanity. BUT let me explain.

The definition first indicates that sanity means sound mind, hmmmm. Next it says, rationality and healthiness of the human mind. Now tell me, is it rational or healthy to go outside of the traditional breakfast of eggs and toast and eat cake with chocolate milk? Or is it rational of me to say to my child, leave your sister alone or I will let dad give you a swirly? Or how about, let’s buy a video game because I hear it comes with a free Lego set? Any of that sound rational?

I have been thinking a lot about the coming school year. Right now, the line up is Jax in 3rd, Rylon in 1st, Eyrlin in Kinder, and two babies roaming the house. Oh, did I mention I still homeschool, totally rational! I talked to my loving husband about the build up of stress coming on and he said lovingly, “Yay, let’s not have anymore kids.” Hmmm, not really gonna solve the stresses I have right now.

How do I maintain a sane life with so much responsibility? First, I think, how did mom do it all? Second, Why can I not be more like my mom? And third, why did my mom have to be so awesome with a million kids, it makes me look bad with my five?

I found this quote and fell in love with it.

Elder Neal A. Maxwell has said, “When in situations of stress we wonder if there is any more in us to give, we can be comforted to know that God, who knows our capacity perfectly, placed us here to succeed. No one was foreordained to fail or to be wicked. When we have been weighed and found wanting, let us remember that we were measured before and we were found equal to our tasks; and, therefore, let us continue, but with a more determined discipleship. When we feel overwhelmed, let us recall the assurance that God will not overprogram us; he will not press upon us more than we can bear (D&C 50:40)” (“Meeting the Challenges of Today,” in Devotional Speeches of the Year, Provo: Brigham Young University, 1978, page 156).

Don’t you love a good quote. I love that, John and I have always made decisions in our life with the Lord. He will not overprogram us. So sorry honey, but the no more kids bit hasn’t been taken to the Lord yet.

Then  I found this little gem.

“We can create unhealthy stress in our lives by knowingly or unintentionally striving for the wrong things. But striving for righteousness offers peace through Christ.”

Ahhh, I love that! Then my husband said to me, “Babe, it’s all about the good, better, best.” Loved that!

I see a lot of good things happening in my life. I definitely allow the stress of useless details enter in and over take my righteous goals. Example: Home school is a big part of our lives, something we feel extremely good about. When it comes to the amount of things to learn I have to remind myself, often, they don’t need to know everything right now. I have about  million great ideas in my head and can’t seem to weed out all the great ideas.

Also, for anyone who follows my facebook feeds, John recently told me to delete my facebook.

I was so upset.

Why was I upset?

Well truth be told, he saw in me a level of stress from reading and following all 450 friends and family that I did not see at all. At dinner (I know I am totally putting myself out there, but don’t judge), I would go down the list of recent happening of people past and present. John would look at me confused at my knowledge and then quickly he would say, “Don’t tell me this is all facebook.” Sometimes he would come home and I would be upset, “Some people should not post things on facebook. I mean do they not know how rude or insensitive they are towards others feelings.  Why would someone do that?” Or, “I worry about Bonnie (I don’t know a Bonnie) she is hanging out with the wrong friends, you should see the language they are using and how she responds to it, it’s so sad!” Then we go to bed, I would want to talk about ways I could help or do more or be more to someone. I am so glad John is so patient!

John has told me many times, “Your feelings are too tender to be emotionally involved with 450 peoples lives.” That’s when I get upset. “What do you mean my feelings are TOO tender??!?!! I don’t know what you are talking about!! I don’t have any tender feelings, I am tough as nails!! Wow, and I thought you knew me!” Well, it was something like that. He was right, after long thoughts with my tender feelings, he was right! Dang, I love him for that.

I went one week with no facebook….. Interesting. I was totally in control, we had real conversations about life, I made rational decisions. Kids ate regular breakfast meals, no one got a swirly, and I wasn’t randomly shouting out, “NO WAY! FREE $20 Legos when you buy a $50 Wii game.” I had a sound mind, a mind focused on my reality and our family life.

Confession is good people!!

Everyone has a stress and things that fuel it. I found my fueler, I don’t fully understand it or why it is that way for me, but it does give me reason to think about other things in my life that might add stress that aren’t even qualifiers for the “good, better, best” categories.

ALSO, don’t laugh, but I dance around the house again and John LOVES that!! That is a fun stress reliever, especially when I pretend I am the artist singing the songs.

I know others like reading to channel their stress, is that why you read all the time? Anyway, I believe we have to find it and make use of it. I also know that the Lord is a great guide in helping us identify and bring understanding to the things we need to be doing that are important.

Anyway, I believe I have a wise husband who helps me see things that maybe I can’t always clearly see and I am grateful for his openness and wisdom.

Elder Bednar said, “When words cannot provide the solace we need or express the joy we feel, when it is simply futile to attempt to explain that which is unexplainable, when logic and reason cannot yield adequate understanding about the injustices and inequities of life, when mortal experience and evaluation are insufficient to produce a desired outcome, and when it seems that perhaps we are so totally alone, truly we are blessed by the tender mercies of the Lord and made mighty even unto the power of deliverance (see 1 Ne. 1:20).”

As a busy mother of five beautiful children and wife to an amazing husband, the Lord’s tender mercies mean everything to me. I love Him, and am grateful for the out stretched hand He lends me, especially in these recent weeks.

So, mom, thank you for the recent talks about the stresses you’ve had as a young mom. I see I am not alone. My goal this week is to set a timer and only spend five minutes twice a week on facebook. I have been doing this and it really does seem to work well for me. I don’t get too sucked in that way. It’s enough to tell the people I love that I love them and I am thinking of them, righteous reasons, right? Not enough time to see any thing too negative that it sends me in a tizzy, or a worry wart, or a defensive friend or a mother of 100 more kids who need a good talking to. I am me again!! Ahhh, feels good.

Have a wonderful weekend. Send Jen my love!

I love you!!'

Kathy

P.S. Did you see the world is coming to an end tomorrow? Totally read it on facebook .Open-mouthed smile

Easter and Flu

Easters

We had a great Easters, thanks to Nacho Libre this is the new name of Easter around here. We usually do our Easter baskets (bowls) on Saturday, along with a hunt, and then Sunday we have a nice meal and talk about what Easter is really about.

EASTER BOWLS

Easter Hunt and Barf Days 010

All bowls come with a small $5-$10 gift. Jax and Rylon got kites, Eyrlin a little dress, Broden Bubbles, and Canon a much needed summer outfit. Oh, and John received “Where the Red Fern Grows”, an inside joke with my hubby, and I received socks.

HUNT/PLAYING AT THE PARK ALL MORNING

Broden Hunt

Broden loved the hunt!! He kept his eggs and played for days after with anyone who would hide them for him.

Eyrlin Hunt

Eyrlin was careful about counting her eggs, but when she was done she had 19 instead of 12. I said, “Oops Eyrlin, you got more then you were suppose to, that’s put some back.” Her response, “No I didn’t, I meant to get 20.”

Canon Hunt

Canon was confined to a stroller during the hunt (didn’t want him to get trampled), poor guy. After awhile, he explored the park and people. Canon is such a joy!

Rylon Kite Flying

Rylon brought his kite to the park and had a lot of fun. The wind was on his side and the kite flew quite well.

Jax Sharing Kite

Jax was a sport and shared his kite with everyone. There was a line at his kite position.

It was a nice Easters!!

BARFING

Let me tell you about the flu we have had, it was HORRIBLE!!! Sunday Canon spit up, he usually does from time to time. Monday morning I got hosed with barf and that is how my week of sickness began. Canon started throwing up on Monday and ended Saturday. Rylon started Wednesday and ended Friday. I started Thursday along with Broden and Eyrlin, I ended later that day and they are still slightly sick. I have never heard of such craziness before. It was a little sad to watch my little ones go day after day carrying around a bucket and begging to eat only to throw is up 5 minutes later.

Broden Barfing

This was comfortable to him because it was cold. It was so sad!

Eyrlin Barfing

Eyrlin was in her room most of the time. So sad!!

We missed our energetic kids and can’t wait till everyone is back to normal.

MISC.

John and Canon Phone

John and I have been guilty of playing a lot of phone games during this long road of barfing. Thanks to MILAS HOWE!! That’s right, I’m calling you out, we have been addicted to the Bubble Shooter game. Don’t play it, save yourselves!! Canon is now addicted to the Bubble Shooter game, it’s crazy.

John

I have to take a small moment and express much gratitude for this handsome guy here. John has been working like a mad man, late nights, long hours. During this week of barfing babies, I haven’t been able to cook, clean, laundry (because it’s always full of bedding, towels, etc.) or take a moment to listen to him, pamper him, answer his phone calls, or anything.

Saturday night, I selfishly hit the wall of exhaustion and John literally sent me to bed at 8pm. When I woke Sunday morning, he had been up with sick kids all night, cleaned house the night before, and started dinner for me before he left for a 6AM meeting, crockpot. It reminded me of what a great partnership I have with this man. I felt so guilty going to bed without getting my work done, but it was so nice to wake up to it being all done. I spent my Sunday snuggled on the couch with two sick kids, and was able to give them my full attention with no worries. It was relaxing and refreshing to be able to start my Sunday that way when I wasn’t expecting it.

John is one in a million, billion, trillion, infinity!!

Now I am back to the household duties, it gives me more motivation to make things perfect for his arrival after a long days work. Life is almost back to normal.

Trials

Dear Mother,

I am not sure which topic to chose this week as they all need my immediate attention.

This has been a topic of conversation among so many in recent months with the economy slowly dying away.

One night, I was laying in bed and couldn’t sleep, John was working. I grabbed my book off the night stand, read the chapter headings, and saw an interesting pattern of talks. The book is “To Draw Closer to God”, the chapters read in order 7 Trials of Faith, 8 Waiting on the Lord, and 9 Surrender to Christ. I wondered if there was a specific reason for listing those in that order and then I began to read.

The first thing I highlighted was , “Trials will continue to come.” The next thing I highlighted was, “The thing you need to understand is that the escape will almost never be out of the trial; it will usually be through it.”

I went on to the next chapter, Waiting on the Lord. Pres. Eyring shares this scripture in regards to waiting. Isaiah 40:31, “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings of eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

And the last chapter I read, Surrendering to Christ. “Make sure you don’t focus too much on yourself or your personal problems and struggles. Instead of thinking of yourself primarily as someone who is seeking purification, think of yourself as someone who is trying to find out who around you needs your help. Pray that way and then reach out. When you act under such inspiration, it will have a sanctifying effect on you. Now if you do these things something wonderful will happen. The Lord will try you, but if you’ll work a little bit and show him that you’re willing to try, he will bless you and give you more strength and understanding.”

Do you see how this all goes together? It all goes together in my brain, I just hope blog has it all outlined and right.

I have trials. I have some out there in front for all to watch and some are very personal and internal, no one sees them but me.

I am grateful to my Father in Heaven for my children who are an instant reminder that it isn’t all about me. Motherhood and being a wife is the greatest calling I have. What I learn from these moments in my life will be the greatest blessing to me.

The most recent trial I think we have been faced with as a family is a shift in job structure. This is never an easy transition I am sure. In the beginning, there was this panic and freak out, but we committed ourselves to a pattern of obedience as a safety net through the tough times we knew were ahead. It hasn’t been all roses but we knew we weren’t alone and that the Lord was always there listening, and inviting us to continue being obedient, and strengthening us along the way.

I have no doubt that my life has been extremely blessed over the last few years. I know that there has been numerous opportunities for us to serve. I know the Lord gave us gentle nudges to forget about ourselves and serve others around us. I also know we have been strengthened and humbled.

Mom, I know I personally gave you about 80% of the trials in your life. So yes, you’re welcome!

I know you have had your fair share of obstacles in life. I know the Lord has blessed you and dad tremendously through the obstacles. I know that my life has been blessed because of the faithfulness of my parents.

I stopped my goal portion, partially because I think I am learning so much more when I try not to stick to specific things but just when I spend the week thinking about what I wrote. Does that make sense?

Well, I am off to tend to sick kids! Love you mom! Thank you for your example!
