I CAN'T BE PREGNANT????
February 13, 2008 Bill & I traveled to California to make a 3:15pm Doctor's appointment with my Gyno-Oncologist Dr. Brown. We were there a day early to check to make sure I still had enough cervix to do a surgery, cervical cone biopsy, the following day 3/14. Everything was good, per Dr. Brown so we went out to dinner at the World Famous CRAB COOKER in Newport Beach and then decided to go back to the hotel to relax in the lobby with a couple glasses of wine and discuss our current-state-of-the-union. Basically we discussed the what-if's of having a little one of our own, if that was to be an option after all this cancer surgery. After a couple glasses of white zin' I was starting to act silly and ready for bed.
The next morning we made it to the Hoag Surgery Center in time for our pre-op prep before Dr. Brown came down to preform his 10am procedure. The nurses had me get my gown and booties on and told me to "pee" in the cup in the bathroom. After I was done getting ready there was a little bit of concern because I hadn't done my lab work prior to surgery, but since I was just here 6 weeks prior for my last cone biopsy they called up to Dr. Brown's office and I was cleared. So I jumped in bed, was covered in a warm blanket and then the world fell off of its axis......
As one of the nurses was preparing me for surgery the other nurse came to the side of the bed with this bewildered look. I was looking at her, she was looking at the other nurse and something in her hand........after what seemed to be like too long of an uncomfortable silence.......IT HIT ME..............I said "I CAN'T BE PREGNANT. I'VE NEVER BEEN PREGNANT. Seriously, I CAN'T BE PREGNANT!" The nurses just stared at the little stick with two dark red solid lines and then stared at me, as if I was supposed to do or say something.
They decided to take a second stick test with the remaining urine; that test rendered the same result....2 dark red solid lines. They now called back up to Dr. Brown's office to report that his 10am surgery was most likely going to be postponed since his patient WAS PREGNANT! I wasn't sure what to think at this point, excitement of course, but I still have cancerous cells in my cervix. How is that going to effect this potentially exciting news? As I started to cry, the nurses realized they should probably round up my unsuspecting husband who was waiting in the lobby. They rounded up Billy, the love of my life and best friend, to a small conference room. I was still in my gown so he was thinking we were just going into surgery soon, but I asked him to sit down. I informed him we couldn't do the surgery today.....I was pregnant. The news was received with complete joy and excitement from my wonderful husband of over 6 1/2 years. (What not everyone knew was we had decided 4/07 that we were ready to take the next journey in our marriage, but had been unsuccessful and the cervical cancer wasn't helping.)
Now, after talking over all of our options with Dr. Brown, and taking a blood test at the lab to confirm the same news, we have decided that we will put this baby in the hands of GOD. I have my first doctor appointment with a High Risk OB/GYN April 1st, which we are figuring will be at about 7 weeks. If GOD allows me to carry this baby to term I will have to have a C-Section at time of delivery to keep the baby from coming in contact with the cancerous cells that are still left in my cervix. After delivery then I have agreed that a moderate hysterectomy will be our best plan of attack against this stupid cancer....DEAL; small price to pay for Bill & I to have a baby!
Nonetheless, we are SOOOOOOOOOO excited. We spent 8 hours driving back from CA last night, after calling all of our close family and friends, talking about the kinds of parents WE wanted to be to OUR baby. Now all I can do is take my vitamins, eat right, stay healthy and pray we get over the initial hump of incubation. Keep you all posted.
