We had some friends over to build mock gingerbread houses out of rice crispy treats. After we made the rice crispy treats Devin made a pattern and cut everything out. The building was all going along wonderfully... until the roofs started to sink in. Now we know that a few hours cooling in the garage is not enough... Next time we'll make the rice crispies a couple days in advance so they have time to harden. They tasted great, but didn't hold up so well. It was still fun!

It's the Holiday Season (pt.3- Christmas)
Shopping for a Christmas Tree
The weekend after Thanksgiving, we went with the Tanner's to a tree farm, to cut and haul our own Christmas tree. We went for the experience and because we like to hang out with the Tanner's. It was a beautiful, sunny, cold day. With a little snow left over from the day before Thanksgiving's storm, it was a perfect day for getting a Christmas tree.| Not our dog. Lucky, a chihuahua puppy, is ours to puppysit sometimes. |
The kids all wanted to ride in the tree sled.
Lucky Devin got to pull them. The tree farm had lots of trees to pick from, but it was a set price for the tree, not by the size. I am more particular than I realized I must take after my dad, and we don't have lots of space in our living room for a bush tree, and the nice Fir's I like were $60/tree. So we enjoyed the experience of witnessing the Tanner's cut down their Christmas tree, and then we bought a cheap ($28) Costco tree to support the commercialization of the Christmas tree industry.
Sing "Oh, Christmas tree. Oh, Christmas tree. How lovely are thy branches. Oh, Christmas tree. Oh, Christmas tree. How lovely are thy branches. Not only in, hmm hmm hmm hmm. Ooo oo ooo oooh, hmm hmm hmm hmm. Oh, Christmas tree. Oh, Christmas tree. How lovely are thy branches!" Someday we will really learn the words to that song!
Here are the Tanner's with their tree!
Hauling it out...
The boys, Ethan and Bridger, wanted to try pulling it themselves.
And a fun lunch afterward.
Decorating our tree.
The kids did a wonderful job of decorating the bottom corner of our Christmas tree.| Tuckered out from all the excitement. |
| Cheesers! |
Finally decorated for Christmas!

Parenthood: Not For the Faint of Heart
"Did we do the right thing having kids?" We sometimes muse after an over eventful, and exhausting day. Large displays of displeasure erupting from our terrible children make us wish for a more peaceful atmosphere. It's a good thing they're cute, because sometimes that's all that saves them. Don't they know they should just be grateful? Don't they know that we don't owe them everything they want? Don't I remember these same speeches from when I was little... Yes, yes I do. I'm just on the other side of it now with different opinions.
From the moping, the whining, the tantrums... Screaming "I want it! I want it!..." or pouting "No! I Don't. Want. Anything!" I thought it was hard when they were babies, but that kind of crying I can handle. However, add lack of sleep from baby to big kid tantrums and I want to call it a day at 10AM! Sometimes I feel like I am living at my wits end, I've lost my sense of humor, and just as quick as a melting child, can my emotions flip, first angry and then feel like crying, when only moments ago I thought I was doing okay.
Is this my new normal? How long will the whining and the tantrums last?
I know it is a good thing Sawyer slept 10 hours last night, because I needed my energy today. I hope he keeps it up! I hope I can keep it up.
If you are thinking of having kids ... Don't do it! Okay, I take most of that back. Kids are great. They are really great at putting on display my faults and what I need to work most on. It's two fold... Since they have my genes, some of their bad traits they inherited, which I can claim that yes, they got that from me. And I find my faults come out of me when I don't handle situations properly. It's a learning experience. It's also why I don't spank, I know I'd regret it later.
They are great for keeping me humble and giving me a need for spiritual direction. Life goes along pretty well, but sometimes I really don't know the best way to handle my kids and I really do want to spank them and lock them in their rooms for the day. Instead I lock myself in my room and pray that the Lord will bless me to handle this. Pray for patience. Pray for wisdom in parenting skills.
Kids are great. They are full of love, and forgiveness; compassion and goodness. They make me think about who I want to be and they teach me what I need to be. And I thought I was supposed to be teaching them.
Maybe a bit too honest. Let me end by saying I love my kids. Thank goodness for after bedtime, when it is my time to regroup, rethink, breathe, and get ready to try again tomorrow.

Sweet Little Miss
Sweet
little Myra. She is mom's biggest challenge, every day. She is so darn cute,
and has a lot of spunk. But along with all that spunk is a determined,
opinionated, independent willed little girl. She knows exactly what she likes
and what she doesn't. And she has a knack for getting what she wants.
"I
can do it" is one of her most popular phrases. What it really means is if
you try to help me, I will just go back and do it myself, and if you don't let
me, I'll throw a screaming fit.
Once as
we were on a walk I helped to lift her baby doll stroller over the curb. As
doing anything for her that she thinks she can do herself is unacceptable, she
pushed her stroller all the way back around, and then did it again, herself.
Another
time I was in a hurry to get home and buckled her in her seat. Because I didn’t
let her do it herself she screamed all the way home! And continued for about 10
minutes after we got home. Sometimes I wish I could do a free trade-in.
But she
has many sweet moments too which allow her to keep her name “Sweet Myra”. She gives mom the cutest grins, and has the very best facial expressions. She
reads books and sings songs to Sawyer to keep him happy. When Devin is headed
out the door she runs after him “Dad! I need to give you a kiss and
a hug!"
She
plays really well on her own. Sometimes I’ll check to see what she’s up to and
find her in her room rocking her baby, singing songs, reading, or making up
stories.
Once
she tried to imitate the way mom feeds baby Sawyer, and tried nursing her baby
doll with her belly button. Her doll's name is also Sawyer. She has also
generously shared her two sucking fingers with Sawyer (the real
one).
She is a little singer.
At church she sings out loud and strong, so cute, but it makes such an
irreverent scene in Sacrament meeting. It is so hard not to burst out laughing,
and giggles ripple through the benches surrounding us. It was particularly
funny one Sunday, and we had a family of seven kids in front of us. During the
hymns, they all caught the giggles, and despite their parents warning looks and
pointed fingers none could stay very reverent (I don’t think the parents knew we were
the source).
Sometimes when I am
sitting with Sawyer she will carry her stool in, stand atop it, and tell me a
story or sing me a song. “Listen to me!” she will say. She’s a great song rite.
“Okay… What song?" I’ll give her a
topic and she will sing whatever comes to her mind about that. Then, clapping,
she applauds herself “Okay, good job!”
Other times she will come in and demand "Talk to me!"
She's always chatting (often to herself). If anyone is around she loves to get
a conversation going.
Before I had kids, I thought if I had a little girl I would do her
hair every day. Then I had a little Myra, and my reality is that she goes with
her hair uncombed much more often than my ideal. Thus the ragamuffin looking
little girl you see in the picture below.
| Compliments to Devin for packing paper Toga. |
She has definite opinions about her hair also. She hates getting
it done, but if it has to be she prefers a long ponytail in the back so she can swish it. Any other hairdo usually results
in tears, Myra sheds many as well.
One time she informed me “I have orange hair... You have brown hair. And
grandma has white hair!” (White must equal blonde because neither of her grandma’s are
white).
She loves everything girly and pretty. I often find my high heels
around the house after she's practiced walking in them. She loves lip gloss,
painting nails, and the color pink. I discovered
her once trying to paint her own finger nails. Under my supervision, she
finished and actually did really well. She is a perfectionist with her nails, she
dabbed the polish off before applying, and wiped it off her skin with a tissue. If I take her shopping with me she points out everything she
thinks is pretty.
One time when we were shopping she thought I should buy a hand
wash. I told her no, and she said "but mom, there is lots!" Apparently if the store has no shortage, then
we should definitely take some home!
She is specially tuned in to the sound of what she think might be a candy wrapper or snack bag! Anytime she here's something making a similar rustling sound she says, "Mom! What do you have?!... I want some!" She loves her treats and snacks.

She wants to be like mom (a scary notion). Her new thing is filling little bags or purses
full to the brim with her little things. Mom always takes a bag and so she
needs hers too. She is always prepared as she can't leave the house without a full purse. Sometimes it is so full she needs extra help
zipping it up.
She loves to go running with mom. If I go
during her awake hours, when I come back I’ll get her and she usually ends the
run with me. Her stamina is pretty impressive for a little girl. We just jog down the road and then return,
but she usually doesn’t want to go home. I love the way she used to run with her arms straight back
behind her.
Myra is thinning out and getting tall. She
is leaving her toddler years behind and truly becoming a little person. In some
ways she is getting easier as she can express herself better in words, but she
and I still have struggles.
Today she didn’t want to finish her lunch
and told me if I didn’t let her have a chocolate covered pretzel she wouldn’t
be my friend anymore. Good
thing I’m most interested in being her mom. Sometimes she gets really angry at me when I paint her nails
with bitter nail polish. After
having it on my toothbrush (another story, thanks Devin.) I can totally understand
because it tastes terrible! I
really don’t know how to break that habit, it is so ingrained. I think she somehow
was blessed with all mine and Devin’s stubborn genes. I’m constantly praying I
can learn the best parenting strategies for her.
It’s a good thing I love my little Myra so much.
And at the end of the day, she still wants to snuggle up on mom’s lap, and
wants mom to tuck her into bed. And then screams out for Dad when she wakes up at night. I'm grateful for the ray of sunshine she is in our family!

Pillsbury Dough Boy
He prefers women to men (but he loves his daddy). Strange men make him cry.
Loves the bathtub. When I start the water for his tub he gets the wiggles and tries to thrust himself into the water. Then he is so excited he kicks his feet and waves his arms and doesn't even care when he splashes himself in the face. The tub is his happy place.
He has started eating solids. I am determined to make him a good eater (since my other two are terrible), and it seems to be working so far. He gets three meals a day and he loves his cereal, pureed veggies, applesauce, bananas, and chicken. (And I have been able to add dairy back into my diet which has been a fabulous change! I'm still avoiding peanuts and cruciferous vegetables).
He loves to baby talk. It seems he gets especially conversational at church, so I rarely make it through a Relief Society class. Coos, grunts, and breathes loudly.
He has two bottom teeth. He is finally starting to grow some fuzz on his head! And his newest trick is that he is sitting up!
But the very best thing ever happened last night... He slept straight through the dim hours for an Olympic ten hour stretch! He has been waking up twice during the night for a really long time, but the night before last, he only woke up once. And last night he made me so happy! I still woke up in the middle of the night and got a drink, and Myra woke up three times, but Sawyer was awesome! Hooray for a good night's sleep! (And I hope many more of those to come).
Amy took this video of him giggling last time she visited.

It's the Holiday Season (pt.2- Thanksgiving)
Since moving out to Virginia we have always stayed in Virginia for Thanksgiving. We miss being a part of our family's gatherings back home, but we always have fun with the other "homeless" families from our ward. This year we hosted a big group of 21 eaters. Nicolina decorated our tables, and everyone contributed food to our feast. I cooked the turkey, and we had some delicious pies. The kids ran a muck together, Devin bought a new TV, and my second cousin Kimberly and her husband were able to join our crowd. I ate too much as I always do, and enjoyed having so many friends fill our home. The times when I really love our house the most are when it is full of friends and family. I love gathering together!
Mmmm...
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
