I couple of weeks ago I met Peter and he gave me a copy of the Observer's Handbook for 2015. As soon as I got it home I checked the pages for eclipses and occultations. There is a grazing occultation of 58 Leonis, ZC1599, on 10Oct2015 that looked from the tiny map provided like it might be a local graze.

I have done some research on it and verified that is indeed a local graze. The graze centerline will pass close by the Metro North train stations at Glenwood and Mamaroneck, Westchester County, NY.

Checking the limp profile I found that the best place to observe from would be at -1.5km from the centerline.

And this is what I should see, yellow being visible and black hidden, blue the star is visible before and after the graze. The time scale is in seconds.

I checked the Metro North train schedule and there would be one train returning from Glenwood after the graze is over so that location would be usable.

I checked where I would have to be in that area to be -1.5km from the graze centerline and determined that it would be half way between the Glenwood and Greystone Metro North stations, about 0.75mi from each.

Then I started researching where the star and Moon would be at that time. All the reference material says the graze will occurr at 10Jan2015 0405 UT which translates to 10Jan2015 00005 EST. When I plug that into my planetarium software the Moon is nowhere near 58 Leonis. By playing with the date and time I found that the graze will happen here around 9Jan2015 2240 EST.

The planetarium says the Moon will only be 17°: above the eastern horizon at the time the graze starts which didn't sound too bad until I realized that I would likely be looking into a mountain.

I was thinking I would be looking across the Hudson river but then figured the rising Moon would be in the east. Since I would be near sea level and rivers cut down through the surrounding terrain so there is likely to be higher ground to the east of me and there are indeed some tall mountains along the river like at Stomr King and Breakneck Ridge. So I went to Google Street View to get an idea of what the area looks like and it is not promising.

So I checked out Mamaroneck. Things look a lot more promising there.

And by walking about 0.75mi SE of the train station the sky is even more open. So it looks like I will be going to Mamaroneck…if the weather cooperates.

I was reading the BBC news tonight and the mentioned that it is the 46th anniversary of the release of 2001: A Space Odyssey so I had to dig it out and watch it yet again. It is one of a handful of movies that I return to time and again.

While watching the opening of the space scenes I saw the picture of Haywood's space capsule in transit from the orbiting transit point to the Moon and thought that moon looks close to the current state of the Moon today, not that I have seen the Moon today or any time in the recent past.

So after the movie was over, which was a long 2 1/4 hours but worth it if for the music alone, I dug out my Observers Handbook and did verify the similarity so fired up Stelarium to grab a quick image.

Continuity leaves something to be desired here. When Hayward approaches the transfer station on his urgent fact-finding mission to the Moon the Moon is just approaching full so for it to be just past First Quarter when he leaves the transfer station he must have stayed there at least 20 days.

I also found it interesting that there was an intermission in the middle of the Jupiter mission.

Blogger is behaving strangely. I tried to add streaming images from ISS to the footer and it has deleted all of my sidebar and footer content. But when I preview my page template all of that content appears. When I delete the new content sometimes the old template material is displayed but mostly it is not.

During working hours the stream shows activities going on within ISS and has ISS to cround communications voiceover. During sleeping hours the video alternately shows earth for 45 minutes and darkness, with maybe some lightning flashes or city lights, for 45 minutes.

It is interesting to see solar eclipses happening every 90 minutes as ISS goes into Earth's penumbra and then quickly into its umbra and then reverses the process 45 minutes later.

I am watching the coverage of the Rosetta mission this morning. It puts me very much in mind of the experience of the first manned Moon landing.

The team in the European Space Operations Centre seems much smaller than the NASA teams at the Kennedy or Houston space centers. And their coverage of the event doesn't seem to have as much scripted hyperbole kissing up to a congress.

0400 — We just got confirmation that the Philae lander has separated from Rosetta and is being pulled toward 67P's surface by its gravity, a trip that should take seven hours. There was a problem with the pressurized gas that was supposed to drive the screws in the lander's feet that were to anchor Philae to the surface so now it is all up to the harpoon in its belly that will fire as soon as it makes contact with the surface. Hopefully it will be enough to hold the lander on the surface.

0424 — Early this evening the ESOC had been a big room of empty chairs. About an hour before Philae release it looked like they were doing a shift change and the room filled with both shirts and suits. Now that they have received confirmation of release the ESOC is a ghost town.

0515 — Someone brought in what looked like a stuffed M&M-like alien and had him sitting on top of one of the low, mostly empty, bookcases where he would occasionally appear on screen. Some Scrooge suit just went into the ESOC and picked it up and took it to the back of the room and hid it behind a monitor then left. Bring back the alien.

0937 — The neatness Gestapo are at it again. First the garbage cans had to be moved out of camera sight. And now all the food and other personal items that were on top of the bookcases has had to be moved into the dark recesses of the middle shelf where they are less visible. I wonder what they had to say about the lead scientist who has been appearing in interviews in shorts and a Hawaiian-type shirt covered with scantily clad women and who is himself covered from wrists to elbows and ankles to knees with solid tattoos.

The alien reappeared for the landing but about two hours later someone marched in and took him completely out of the room.

This has been an audacious mission. It launched in 2004 and the satellite slept for 2 ½ years while it received 10 gravity assists to boost its orbit to reach 67P.

It woke up in November and nothing was really known about the shape, makeup or gravity of the comet. All that information was gained while on orbit flying around an object that was changing the orbit of the satellite as it flew around. And now they have successfully landed a lander on the comet and are doing science there.

Today is the second attempt at launching the Orbital Cygnus satellite to resupply ISS, Org-3. Today's launch is set to occur at 1822, just 25 minutes after sunset.

There is a very bright Iridium flare to occur in Cygnus two minutes after launch. Orb-3 should not be visible here until 150-180 seconds after launch so I should be able to observe both events, weather permitting. The current forecast is for 31% cloud cover at 1800.

I browsed the observing locations Orbital has posted and they are MD/VA centric. They do have a graphic for Bergen Co, NJ

and the Google Earth KML file has locations for the Brooklyn Bridge and Battery Park.

They don't give any indication of why there are three second stage burn trajectories in the last graphic.

I haven't been able to figure out how to make Earth show me the trajectory from my observing location but based on the Brooklyn Bridge and Battery graphics it looks like I will be safe in assuming it will break the horizon over Staten Island around that end of the Verrizano Narrows Bridge and probably become visible somewhere over the bridge.

I am just back from Pier 13. I didn't look up when I left the house but when I got downtown say that there was a deck of stratus clouds. I saw a brief flare from the Iridium satellite--not anywhere near as long as a mag -7.9 to -8.4 flare should have been. There was a guy there hoping to see the Orb-3 launch as well. He was watching it on his phone and confirmed liftoff while I was looking at the Iridium then I heard "Ho, F__k" and knew immediately what had happened. When I looked at his phone the screen was filled with a huge orange and black fireball. I thought I heard the announcer say as he was reading off the liftoff statistics that the engines were operating at 180% of capacity which seems to greatly anything an engine would be designed to endure. I am wondering how much the insurance payout will be on it and who makes it. There is the obvious loss of the rocket and satellite, the loss of the payload and the damage to the launch facility. And when can the ISS expect to see another US supply mission (I think a Progress mission launched today or will launch tomorrow from Russia).

Watching the replay of the launch footage on CNN I hear that the power was announced as 108% just before the rocket appeared to catch fire at the bottom and exploded before falling back to the launch pad and the solid rocket of Stage 2 also exploding.

I stopped off ar Pier 13 tonight on my way to NYC Resistor for Laser Night with the intent of "filming" the launch of Orbital's Cyugnus Orb-3 resupply mission to ISS.  I arrived around 1830 for an 1845 launch and set up on the SE corner of the upper deck of the pier.  It was dark enough that the rocket should have been visible but nothing had appeared by 1900 so I gave up and headed over to Brooklyn.  On arriving at Resistor I checked and found that the launch had been scrubbed due to a boat in the downrange safety area.  The next launch attempt will be tomorrow at 1822 when the sky will be much lighter and there are supposed to be more clouds in my local sky.

I found that my camera kept going out of focus while it was recording video.  I suspect that it is trying to spot meter which is how it is set up for still photography.  Since there is nothing in the sky wherever my focus point was last set it repeatedly searches for something there and can't decide what to do when it can't find anything to focus on.  8 need to research resetting the metering mode to matrix or evaluative or whatever we call that use everything mode today.

There was an ISS pass that would have been nice to have seen it it had crossed or even been near the Org-3 trajectory but it was too far to the west and I missed it altogether.

I did catch an Iridium flare up in Cepheus before the time of the launch.

Tonight was an Astronomy Night at Intrepid. It wasn't supposed to have been great weather--cold, windy, and cloudy--but turned out to be not too bad.

After a lot of rain on Wednesday and some on Thursday the morning broke cloudy but by 1000 I was seeing some patches of blue sky to the west. It equivocated during the day and was looking pretty cloudy around 1600 but it was mild and not windy. By event time the sky was mostly clear, the temperature mild, and the wind calm. There was enough light cloud in the area that seeing wasn't that great and some bright stars low on the horizon disappeared.

There were at least ten telescopes and a pair of binoculars there tonight and the crowd was sparse when spread across all of them. I don't think my line was ever more than two deep.

I started off the evening looking for satellites. There was supposed to have been an Irridium flare just before an ISS pass but that didn't occur. There were discrepancies among the data three of us had on the ISS pass. Johnathan's computer was showing it in progress four minutes before it actually started. John't data showed it starting farther north and passing overhead. My data showed it starting farther south and only achieving a maximum altitude of 77°. The pass began roughly where I predicted and did pass nearly overhead as John had predicted.

I had wanted to do some binocular astronomy but wasn't finding much once I got the binocular mounted on the tripod. I think I got the Andromeda Galaxy in the FoV hand held but it has been so long since I have used the binocular on the tripod that I wasn't able to recover the galaxy. Likewise the Coathanger. Aside from translating from one location to another, the Coathanger was so high up that I couldn't get my head under the eyepieces.

I started the night on the Engagement Ring which I found to be a very good target for public observing since the North Star doesn't move and you don;t have to be reacquiring the star unless the tripod gets kicked. I never saw more than two stars in the ring but other younger eyes reported up to four. People enjoyed the story and knowing something about asterisms and how they relate to constellations.

Toward the end of the night I switched over to Alberio, which many people had trouble seeing and particularly the faint blue component. I attribute this to poor seeing.

They have a new exhibit in the Space Shuttle pavilion on the Hubble repair missions. They gave all of the astronomers passes to see it for free so since the crowd was light and I have never seen the Shuttle since it was hoisted onto Intrepid and enclosed in its building I availed myself of the opportunity. I set my tripod legs through the fence around the planes on the flight deck so that it would not get knocked over while unattended and aimed it at Polaris since it would not move out of the FoV while I was gone. The Hubble exhibit was nicely assembled but not a lot of stuff. It is all done in what looks like structural aluminum components and has a very clean, modern look. But other than about a dozen pieces of machinery that were designed to facilitate the repairs it was all text and a few big pictures. What was most impressive was Endeavour. When you come out of the tunnel entrance into the pavilion you are under the Shuttle and looking up you can't even tell what part of it you are under. It turns out it is the back end where the cover is over the motors. I have seen the shuttle as it has flown past Manhattan on launch, in transport on the barge going up the Hudson River, and at close range when it was hoisted from the barge onto Intrepid, but being under it it was at once larger and smaller than I anticipated. Not that modern airports all have jetways we don't have an opportunity to walk on the tarmac and look up at the plane we are going to fly in to appreciate its size. We may see part of it through windows in the departure lounge, it it has them, but mostly we walk from the gate through a small tube into a little bit larger tube and have no concept of how large that tube really is.

Standing under the belly of the Shuttle with it stretching out in all directions it appears huge. Standing at the back end looking into the landing gear well you can see heat shield tiles edge on and they appear to be 9"-12" thick. Then you think that this was used to construct piece by piece, the International Space Station which is the size of a football field
and you realize just how small it is.
