This month has not been a good astronomy month.

Sunspots Observed

I have checked on the Internet a few times this month to see if there were any sunspots up there big enough for me to see but there haven't been whenever I checked. I don't have a sense of how active the sun was this month and I only got out to look at it once all month and wasn't able to find the spots I knew were there that day.

The one time I got out to see stars other than the Sun was an event that started before sunset and was logged as a daytime event although it was probably about half-and-half.

CommentsWe didn’t do as much intense lunar observing as we normally do but that was because the Moon set before it got dark and we had a lot of public interaction since we were set up before it got dark and people knew we were there. We did identify Mare Crisium, Langrenous, Petavius, Cleomedes and Endymion.
As it started to get darker the earthshine on the Moon looked nice.

CommentsI could not detect any phase in either of my binoculars but could see that part of the upper corner was missing when I observed it in Peter’s scope.

It was a lot farther from the Moon than I was looking for it.

There are spots up there. I know there are. I checked Spaceweather before coming out and they are showing three groups for today although I can see a place in the big image where I think there is one more. They are also saying that the sunspot number for yesterday was 61 which probably means five groups.

I checked Active Regions Explorer and they are showing six groups for today. One of them is only a pore.

None of these groups are large enough that I was really expecting to see them in my 7X binocular but gave it a try anyway.

The image is a lot more satisfying with the binocular mounted on the monopod. I think I will be able to pick out some of the moderat-sized groups when they come around. I was surprised at how far I had to extend the monopod to see up to 70° even when I was seated. To see at zenith it is going to take all but the last 6” of the 77” extension the monopod is capable of.
